    Thanks Swynford

Its always nice to have a follow up acknowledgement on a breeding effort. I've got the full in turf fires tummy as I like to follow a nice colt up with another. She has a pins filly yearling and pins colt weanling. I'd be interested in what you think of the nearco build up from her and pins ( check out  the 2 White hind feet on  nogara, turf fire, don Carlo, and also both pins...loving it)

to to me Don Carlo is a stronger version of turf fire in type, with all the same colouring.

I remind you that you had a hand in that mating post our chat at equidays.

    Cheers

    chris.

  2. http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/racing/72212927/ashburton-club-spat-turns-nasty-as-trainers-face-eviction

intersting to see that the ashburton racing club are evicting a local trainer while imploding at the committee level at the same time.

irrespective of the issues (on both sides) it does seem to be a real shame that the club are internally and externally turning on their own. Never a great look and not good for either party.

Why dont they just meet, exchange a willingness to talk, and sort it out.

  3. I think a service fee of upto $30k can be easily justified, given the success his progeny is enjoying.

With Street Cry now gone, Per Incanto is proving to be a real successor.

They should be more selective on the quality of the book of mares, rather than taking a first come first served approach IMO.

Must be a very exciting position to be in.

Dream on. $30k is not justifiable in today's climate. And I like the horse, and have bred a nice colt. In time yes, and if he stacks up in Australia - then more.
  4. Three stakes winners now, two in the last two days, Accipter on Friday won a listed race over 1000m and Toocoolforschool last night won a group two race by seven lengths over 1200m.

His only progeny that started in NZ was a close second at only start.

Great start and well priced, next season may be a little higher given his results so far, leads the first season sires list in the UK by prize money and a closing second for number of winners.

Percentage of winners to runners is also one of the best if not the best.

Send your mares to him then before the big price rise. Actually I doubt that mark and the team would move his fee much given their 'policy' to not hike up fees quickly.

  5. And yet more impressive wins today

I note the breeding of yesterday's two feature races....one is out of an exceed and excell (champion) mare and the other from a volksraad (champion) mare, and bother horses look like they have thrown to the type of their dame sires to my eye,

HOWEVER.... Good on the sire, as he's obviously allowing genetics / performance to 'out'.... He's growing on me. Too impress I'd like to see a modest pedigree horse come good. IMHO

  6. Got a couple of questions for Berri, Classic One, and Dopy

If we shouldn't breed from horses that don't perform, and are at the bottom of the heap on the race track or "didn't get the magic gene " how come mares like Tiona, My Trica,(unraced ) and Benediction have become some of the most outstanding producing mares in New Zealand, Add to that list also Eight Carat who was a world class producer. Would you have culled these mares ?.

Or does these genetic theories only apply to the male of the species. ?

So my answer is that racetrack performance may not come through for many reasons be it injury temperament, man made behaviour, lacks of funds,

I'm not sure eight carat raced? But genetics can still be good.

Many good breeders use mares that are unraced. Lessor performed stallions have a harder road.

  7. Have to agree with Berri and Forrest.

While nicks and crosses have a factor, race ability has to be one also and Just Kidding is at the bottom of the heap.

The cost to train the resulting foal will be the same no matter who the sire is.

I suggest going up to the $5,000 to $8,000 service fee range or trying to get a foal share.

And if the reply is the $5k to $8k service fee is too expensive then having a horse in training is going to be far too expensive.

Limoux actually has a great pedigree. When giving advice then knowing a bit more about the stallion is very important.

Either the stallion got the right genetics passed on in the genetic lottery or he didn't. There is no point trying to breed to lines in horses if they didn't inherit the bits your after. Ask Mendel. Or in other words swynford just because the names are there doesn't mean their influence made it through as it's all about probability of genetic inheritance. I think from memory Mendel implied mating 4 times is required to see your required trait once (statistically). Others may correct me.

  8. My maiden mare had a good sized per Incanto colt first up. One factor that will help his prodgeny is the great temperament they all have. Now We have all heard stud masters talk about good temperaments but they are outstanding to handle, and I've had a few on the farm now. ( I have no interest in the horse or any to sell)
