Addington Raceway Wrap up from last week  26/2/24, with reference to Heisenberg winning Race 6 at Addington 22/2/24
" After making his usual customary quick beginning the Robert & Jenna Dunn trained 8yo secured the trail behind The Falcon, dashing past him at the 200m before withstanding the late challenge from Got You Covered. The latter had settled three back on the rails before taking good ground off the winner late, whilst The Falcon's effort was full of merit as he had copped his fair share of mid race pressure"
I would have called it sustained early pressure from the start which spread the field out over more than 20 lengths, the commentator noted a Very Fast Lead Time of 1.14.2, this "pressure" was the result of one of the 3 Diamond Racing Stables horses in the 9 horse field challenging for the lead, it was Dashing Major, driven by John Dunn that applied this pressure.
Dashing Major was of course the horse that decided by himself, to move out into traffic rather than take the passing lane, thereby letting his stablemate go through to win the Marlborough Cup, this time Major thought it was a bad idea to challenge for the lead, but the use of the whip got him onboard with the plan.
Major was right and John was wrong, they both ended up 10.8 Lengths from the winner in last place.
So what did the Racing questionable Integrity Board do?
The Stipes Report said that Dashing Major  " weakened round the final bend and locked wheels with Get Up n Dance "  there was no mention of the driving tactics employed by John Dunn, or a Vet check requested for Major, although it was of course obvious why he had weakened.
It was a clear case of driving in a manner capable of diminishing the chances of his horse, and coincidently helping his stables runner who was trailing The Falcon.
At Wyndham, graduation driver Ricky Gutsell was suspended for 7 days for diminishing the chances of his horse, he has had 29 race drives.
John Dunn has had 12309 drives, he should be suspended for a year, with a 10% uptick for driving to help stable runner!
Of course when your daddy's a Board member and the horse's trainer, the R?B are not going to ask the question's let alone put a charge before the Adjudication committee.

This is so pathetic on the judiciary you really cant comprehend why a charge was even laid.       At worst, Luk should have been called aside and spoken to.     Whether a group or just an ordinary race doesn't really come into it, in my opinion.

The last column is a Universal Driver/Trainer Rating system Liz . It gives an indication of how many places the trainer gets from his/her starters number.
It works out fairly only if the Trainer or driver has a certain amount of starters....It is quite a good guide actually (for trainers with lots of runners).
Telfer and Dunn are both 2 of the leading stables and get good results as they try and keep up with Allstars. ( and their millionaire owners)
They often race in both Islands and get fairly similar results. $500 a week per horse is quite demanding , so lots of syndicates I guess?
Dunn's are doing well with trotters though ( like the Greg , Nina and Ben Hope camp) training on the beach at Woodend.
Barry Purdon doing well in the North now as has the Multi Millionaire ENTAIN CEO Queenslander Dean Shannon buying any amount of horses at the yearling sales to put with Barry and Scott Phelan . They won the NZ Derby in December with MERLIN beating the champion MarkPurdon .
The Standardbreds ALL have a Birthday January 1st now which is great and pulls them into line with Australia . An excellent Welcome Move . All the feature Age Group races can run in late Spring / early summer now towards the end of the year which is Truly Amazing and a great Step Forward.

It is useful PS, but I guess it would also be interesting to know, from each yearling sale, the average purchase cost entering the stable, and the amount that get sacked before qualifying / racing.
The Purdons (both Barry & Mark) don't so often have horses doing the grass circuits trying to get that 'photo on the wall'.
At the end of the day though, if the major weighting was abour ROI, rather than the joy of racing, not many would do it.
So better off to run with the heart and a bit of gut instinct and enjoy the ride.

    Hi Spike,
With a big team, more often than not, that sort of stat always suffers.
Having said that, obviously the Telfer Team are doing very well.
Is the first column the number of starters year to date, the second winners, the third wins and the forth place-getters?
What does the last column represent, as it's certainly not the winning strike rate?
In actual fact I can't work out what it actually represent.
Finally, are these figures from this season and if so when did the season start, now that the Harness horses have a new birth date?
P.S. I wish that with the wave of a wand I could have a new birth date.
    Liz

Luk Chin what a win. Legend. It was great to see him win a big race like this again, but the stipes soured the win.
Yes, it is wrong to charge Dr Luk Chin for this. The horse was seven or eight lengths clear turning in. WTF Stipes, what were you thinking? This looks like you are picking on a small guy. Joke.

Agreed but the cost is the atmosphere of being at the races - firstly marking the scratchings in your book - writing in the drivers for the next race (god only knows who is driving what in the next races until we are told) - cues to get a bet on - the thrill of running to the back of the tote - worrying about if you have time to collect, study the form and cue to place a bet for the next race. Meal to be fitted in whenever you could. Busy but enjoyable times.

fixed odds better for you.... 3.80 last night.then 3.60 today.after my "small" investment dropped to 3.30 . but pleased you ignoring me . My only 4 races mentioned ooga's 1st today, the unlucky 4th  first day ,3rd in top company invercargill(where suggested should place but could even win...) and last to first at Addington. so you obviously should never do what i do as you know more than me. I have won and placed in many super stable comps and jewels comps as well as little ones on here.I have given many prizes away including yellow jewels driving jackets to kids carts (taranaki)etc  Havingbeen a punter for the last 60 years (yes picked Cardigan Bay to win Ak cup 1963 and was hooked for life) can never be 100 % right but when I see quality individuals like to praise them and build them up. You appear quick to knock any initiative and require a guaranteed return  .lol.... you seem to know  all about gallops/dogs as well as trots... and be in different parts of the country often  eg. wanganui new straight dog track  last week now Nelson today .. Doesn't ring true !

I was concerned when last year the Telfer Telfer Cullen combo was scratched from the trainers premiership. It didn't affect me personally but felt it was very unfair to those who had backed the trio.
I recall saying something on here re what would happen if  Dunn/Dunn  split up or died so decided to ask the TAB as follows -

"Last year in this option there was an option on Telfer, Telfer and Cullen, however Cullen left the partnership and therefore all bets were deemed as losers.
This year the main 2 contenders are - Telfer/Telfer - and Dunn/Dunn - if either partnership split or if one of the partners happened to die will the bet on that particular partnership be a loser? I can't find the answers to these question in the rules"   To there credit it was answered within 2 hours with the following reply -   "Thanks for your email.

This is the sort of thing that will need to be sorted at the time if this happens

If one decided to leave and not train on their own accord then yes the bets would stand, where it gets tricky is obviously if a partnership breaks up and they both just train under their own name."   I don't know who answered it and as it was answered at 7.59 pm it may not have been someone in the know to which I have replied -    "So basically there are no specific rules in place to cover this and we should bet blindly and hope neither scenario occurs. I sincerely hope that this is not the case"   Whether or not it will be replied to - who knows   I know Mick Guerin commented on Box Seat last year about how unfair it was to backers of Telfer/Telfer/Cullen when they lost their money when Cullen left   With all the mickey mouse changes re Allstar training partnerships who would know when they could change again   SOME CONCRETE RULES PLEASE TAB - no-one likes betting blind - we could bet on the dogs for that hehe
