What is it with some owners , are they just straight out greedy bastards , CW has won them millions on this horse over the last couple of seasons , now one ride that "They" think is average and they want sack him , Christ he ran second , I don't believe he would have gone any better ridden closer as he would have had to do a bit of work to be closer to the eventual winner and IMO he wouldn't have beaten her on the day , she was super . Just like everything else in this world people want it all , be grateful for what you have got you miserable gits and stop being bad losers .14 points

With the imminent demise of Newshub, there is going to be up to 200 very talented people with "media skills" come on the market, between now and June. Entain/TAB, NZTR and the Harness people should be putting the feelers out now, for anyone who might have an interest in our Industry. My guess is that many of them would have an immense amount to offer, if you simply took a line through what Guy Hevelt brought to the Karaka Sales/Karaka race-night presentation. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have Samantha Hayes fronting Trackside. Don't laugh, maybe not Sam, but there are surely dozens of quality people waiting in the wings with nowhere to go. Liz14 points

Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes
Pak Star and 10 others reacted to chiknsmack for a topic
Fast forward a few months: The September and October Racedays, incorporating the G1 Hawkes Bay Challenge Stakes, G1 Horlicks Plate, and G1 Ormond Memorial, will now be held by Auckland Thoroughbred Racing at Ellerslie, and not at Hastings. After an inspection of the Hastings track last Friday it was evident that the current issues with the Hastings track will not be remedied in time to hold this important raceday. No, we haven't inspected the Ellerslie track. We're sure it's fine. And then: The November Racedays, incorporating the G1 NZ 1000 and 2000 Guineas, will now be held by Auckland Thoroughbred Racing at Ellerslie, and not at Riccarton. After an inspection of the Riccarton track last Friday via Google Maps it was evident that we'd rather run all G1 races at Ellerslie. We haven't had a chance to test the Ellerslie track since remedial work after last month's abandonments, but we will run the G1s as the first races on their respective days so that the meeting won't be abandoned before they've been run.11 points -

I have to wade into this discussion, but NOT from a betting perspective. Barriers definitely make a difference from the horse's point of view. Some horses dislike being in tight quarters, and for them, an inside draw is a disadvantage. Others can't manage to sit wide and do extra work, so outside draws don't suit at all. Just depends.9 points -

Two points: 1] When Scooby said: Great planning before a Group 1 2400m race...they really don't have a clue, I don't think that he was having a go at you. 2] Did you accidentally type your last sentence the wrong way around? In other words with the Caps lock on, because you started the sentence with a small i? Or maybe you have caught it from Pogo. n0?8 points

No pressure PS. They're a tough bunch team Horlicks. Phil and Aaron near the top of individual aggregates and both Rev and Gubellini very race hardened. Question is, will Rough Habit's relatively low aggregate come back to bite them in the final wash-up? Good aggregate worth half a point in a tie situation. Good luck mate, it's going to be a fun day. I'll be trying to post Live points table updates after each race to add to the drama7 points -

Interestingly enough, in the days when I used to follow racing much more closely than I do these days, some of the worst jockeys were in the NI, often in the CD. I never really used to have any Southern jockeys on my "wouldn't touch with a barge pole" list. And the problem in the SI is not the jockeys as much as the shocking programming. That is why form can be inconsistent. And form is equally inconsistent in the CD where a horse can fail in an $18,500 race at New Plymouth and then come out and win a $40,000 at Trentham. And vice versa. That would seldom happen in Australia. Half the horses in any given race in the South aren't racing over the distance they would prefer or in their preferred class or after an ideal gap, but they have to take any opportunities available to them. If they wait for the perfect race coming up next week they have every chance of being balloted out. I feel quite sad when I see a typical $18,500 low key race in the south with 12 starters and six of the jockeys are from the NI, often the very top jockeys like Kennedy and Doyle. How on earth are southern jockeys to gain experience and skills if they can't even get a ride at a low key meeting? Some of them have to drive 6 hours to get two rides. It must be a pretty dispiriting occupation. And when they ride at certain tracks with about six people in attendance and no atmosphere they must wonder why they bother.7 points -
without a shadow of a doubt barriers are one of THE most important factors in assessing potential outcomes, every race is different so looking at whether inside or outside barriers throw up more or less winners is totally irrelevant. they make a HUGE difference to the potential outcome of races.7 points

To be honest putting up a list of the positions he has held doesn't equate with meaning he was successful in those roles . Someone could list the positions that John Allen has held in his career , but it means nothing . Listing people's CV's just proves that the Lazy Susan of executive rolls is too bloody easy to jump off and on , and NZ clearly has a limited pool of capable people to choose from . It's just a bunch of suits playing musical chairs .7 points

“Even so, racing somehow needs to get back to having free-to-air TV coverage which is stuck on Sky out of sight of many. Getting publicity for racing these days is a tough gig with mainstream media virtually ignoring it and the only recourse for punters is to go online.” Well said. Drove to the Ipswich races yesterday listening to Radio TAB- didn’t that bring back some memories of the times in NZ when you could do that.7 points

Nah you would be asking for trouble these people are indoctrinated with treaty mania , NOT AS BAD as TV1 but still likely to bring turn off habits with them , that's one of the main reasons many don't watch the news today and advertising revenue has plummeted for both of them, same reason . TV1 get away with it because they are publicly funded , the racing industry might suffer the same remote control fate as TV3 if they were to employ some of these people .7 points -

1. Either pick two horses in each race - you will have $10 each way on both and a $2 quinella; or if you'd prefer to pick just one horse in any (or all of the races) you can do that and you will have $20 each way on that one runner, but you will forego the quinella. 2. You will have two best bet races where your bet is doubled. They can be any two of the 12 races listed below. Posting deadline this week is 2.00pm This weeks 12 races are as follows: 1. Auckland Cup result
Baz (NZ) and 5 others reacted to Alf Riston for a topic
Sadly, despite the presentation team throwing in all sorts of superlatives on how sensational the racing was, for mine it was not much more than 'another day at the races'. The crowd looked sparse against oversized, dated infrastructure (the temporary stand at the Parade ring did look bright and shiny but held no more than a handful of people in the shots I saw). The prestige & charm of NZ's premier staying event and the Carnival itself have long since slipped away, contributable in my opinion to the shift from it's traditional Christmas timing and poor stakemoney on offer. Our premier staying events now resemble not much more than glorified highweights. Starters in the Cup yesterday had an average of 28 starts for $11,000 per trip to the races and I doubt we saw any future Melbourne Cup contestants in the mix. We now have Entain and a brand new 'state of the art' track, but it's clear that it's going to take time and a lot of extraordinary effort to make the Auckland Cup a great day out , instead of just another race viewed from the couch.6 points -

Trentham track update
Hi Ho Silver and 5 others reacted to nomates for a topic
What I don't get , aside from the track issues , is why are they running a meeting the week before a major G1 race meeting . This has become the norm with NZTR , run a ho hum meeting the week before a major race is to be run on the same track . Surely common sense dictates that you run your best races on the best surface , so run the other day after the main meeting . Now the outcome is the best horses are running in the best races on a substandard surface , it would be a different story if our tracks were absolute top surfaces but as we know and the thread is discussing they simply aren't . Time that more thought was put into our dates , at present it amateurish and lazy , just keep doing what we always have . I have said this many times , our whole calendar needs an overhauling .6 points -

Well a good horse has four good legs, but as Mr McGinty proved against Marscay he's pretty competitive even with only three good legs. NoMates might be that one bad McGinty leg right now, but bad legs can be repaired. Meanwhile, the other three legs are all in the top quarter of the field. You on the other hand have too many rough habits to turn it around in two weeks. I think you might need to be broken in again5 points
