  1. Kingsbeer, one of our regular contestants, has very generously donated $300 to sponsor a one-day "LONGSHOT" comp. An entry thread will go up this evening but here is how it will work. The objective is to pick longshots, ie. horses paying $10 or more to Win (based on closing NZ TAB tote price). You have to pick 12 horses across 5 specified meetings (per entry thread). Provided the horse is paying $10 or more when the Win tote closes, you will have $10 each way on the horse. If the horse closes paying less than $10 on the Win tote then your selection will be invalid - you will earn nothing. We know that the tote Win prices can shorten from when you make your selections so you need to aim for longshots who are unlikely to shorten to under $10. A simple example to illustrate this. My selection closes paying $10.50 for the Win and $3.30 for the Place and runs second - I collect $33 from the $10 place bet. However if the horse runs second but closes paying $9.70 for the Win and $3.30 for the Place, I will collect nothing because the Win dividend was less than $10. The place dividend has no bearing in whether the bet stands or not, but it can form part of the collect if the Win price meets the $10 threshold. You can make your selections in any of the races across the 5 meetings. No limit on number of selections at a particular meeting, but you can only pick one horse per race. Scratchings - if any of your selections are scratched you can replace them right up to the posting deadline (start time of the first race on the day). If you don't replace them that is your loss - your selection is invalid and you lose that opportunity for a collect. Late scratchings and abandoned races are just bad luck - too tricky for the scorers to be picking up replacements on the fly after the posting deadline. The winner will be the person with the highest total collect across their 12 picks. The prizes will be: $200 for the winner $70 for the runner-up $30 for the 3rd place finisher In the event of ties the prize money will be split using normal dead-heat splits, eg. two way tie for 1st each will receive $135. Usual story with prizes - they will take the form of a single bet (win and/or place) with any collect split 50% to the entrant and 50% recycled to future comps. Thanks Kingsbeer - much appreciated!

    Michael walker

This is from Aussie racing website Racing.com, Doctors are planning to reduce the level of Michaell Walkers sedation. Doctors will slowly look to bring Michael Walker out of sedation as the Group 1 hoop continues to make positive progress after a fall on Monday. Walker was riding in a jump out at Pakenham on Monday morning when the horse he was riding collapsed. The 38-year-old was treated by paramedics before being transported to the Alfred Hospital by helicopter. Walker was placed in an induced coma, suffering serious head trauma following the fall. Initial scans on Monday afternoon cleared walker of any internal injuries or spinal damage. However he remained sedated given the seriousness of his concussion. VJA boss Matt Hyland told Racing.com doctors were aiming to slowly take Walker out of sedation on Wednesday. "He remains in ICU and is still under sedation. The docs are going to look to reduce the sedation through the night and into this morning," Hyland said. "They will gradually bring him round. He's had a fairly heavy concussion, so the fact they are doing that (bringing him out of sedation) is obviously fairly positive. "They will monitor as they progress with him."

Walked in there this Morning, three people in the entire place, the Male Operator loses the plot over me not wearing a 'mask' even though the other two were wearing masks banned by many Countries( the Blue ones ) and he the even more useless homemade type ...nek minute hes outside sucking on a fag while people remained inside waiting to be served , trying to back up his argument suggesting ive been watching far to much You Tube .You can walk into any cafe or restaurant full of people unmasked ( normal) yet you cant place a bet at youre friendly ( not) local TAB . Lets Stop this Farce once and for all, if you feel safer wearing a mask by all means thats your perogative, but to force that upon healthy non smoking patrons is ridiculous

  6. Yes, he has been, Further news on injured NZ jockey Taiki Yanagida from his manager with him at hospital: Taiki remains in induced coma but also has serious back injuries and is being moved from Waikato to Middlemore Hospital (Auckland). NZTR are also paying for Taiki's parents to fly from Japan to NZ to be with him. They are hopefully arriving in Auckland, on Friday.

  7. A Terrific Competition is anticipated for this Saturday's new Contest . Great idea. Thanks KINGSBEER. Thanks SaynoMore who has Two comps to score this weekend. My computer has spilled out an Erratic Factor for the early contenders. ( ER ). 1 being Low reliability ....... 10 Highly reliable and informed ) It will be a competition that will really suit the likes of : Paul ( Ponderosa ), the Long Shot Champion in similar post Viet Nam war competitions. I usually take quinellas with his selections. ( ER 9 ) Insider with her ambiguous name has top credentials for those over $22.00 divies. ( ER 4 ) High Sparrow and Cabbage Great record in every RCafe competition. Likely favourites for top Three. ( ER 7 ) Zims Led by Lyn, and every entry with ZIM in the title is like having a Turn Me Loose 2 year old in your stable. WFA ability. ( ER 9.2 ) Gubellini a Breeding buff: He's my "go to guy " when my memories of race days from the past, get a bit blurred. May have horses racing on Saturday, so very interested in his selections. Deserves a competition win at this level. ER 10.00 Cubes and High Sparrow. Both have the ability to win this Saturday's comp. with a $44/1 selection. Not to be under estimated. Bad rating . ( ER 2.3) Tauhei Notts. Waikato Bean counter with poor attendance in these Saturday competitions. Knowledge and wisdom . Reported to have backed backed Simon De Montfort in 1987 Wellington Cup. (ER.. nil ) Pound 4Pound Has other missions in mind. How ever his ego could randomly select a horse from Royal Randwick in R 8 " Hard Empire or R10 Ruperstar. ( ER 3.193 ) Floyd Pink Statistically the top four favourite to win or place top 4. Well bred and analyses form. Will be picking off shore, for sure. ( ER 9.9 ) Warren : Never, ever discount . Ever. Reliable. Heavy track selections only query in NZ...probably goes off shore. ? ( ER 9.22 ) Right first Time : Often is right. Most selections are 3/1 or worse, so no form this competition format > ( ER 4.91 ) I Will post new form Dates for Saturday's LONG JOHN LONG SHOT Competition when I see the full field.

  8. See the How It Will Work thread for more details. Very simply you need to pick 12 "longshots" (paying $10 or more to Win on the tote). You can pick horses in any 12 races of your choice at the five meetings listed below. Limit of one pick per race, ie. you need to pick in 12 different races. Posting deadline is 11.16am - please note early start. No entries will be accepted after the posting deadline - plenty of time between now and then M2 Ruakaka M6 Riccarton M11 Randwick M12 Flemington M14 Doomben Posting format - having encouraged you to post horse names for the LGL comp, I would now really like you to post the horse saddlecloth number, not the name for this comp. Would also be very helpful if you could post in meeting order and then race order. For example a very helpful entry post would look like this (illustrative only): M2 Race 1: #7 M2 Race 7: #6 M2 Race 8: #2 M2 Race 9: #4 M6 Race 3: #5 M6 Race 9: #1 M11 Race 1: #8 M11 Race 4: #7 M14 Race 6: #8 M14 Race 7: #15 M14 Race 8: #12 M14 Race 9: #17 If for some reason you choose to post horse number and horse name and they don't correspond, I will use the horse number posted. Remember up to you to replace scratchings prior to the posting deadline - no default subs. Thanks again Kingsbeer - great format and very generous prizes!

I read where Vin Scully, the most gifted story teller and master of the graceful phrase, one of America's best sports writers, has died. It is a pity that the son of Sportswriter, that bears his name did not rise to such heights. But it was a clever name to give a son of Sportswriter.

    NZ Cup Week Pow Wow?

Gee thanks for that Pure, I have always known the work behind the scenes it takes to put the finished polished top racers out there in front of us the fans/viewin public in general, from the muckin out of stalls and up; it aint a walk in the park for trainers and I've only mentioned a few in my post earlier, cos those were the ones quickly to mind, but there are so many chances to be able to put Harness upfront and personal that those at the big table don't seem to wanna take, and aint it all about the Competition at the end of the day? you know havin a horse you reckon can beat that Kiwi Champ or that Ozzie Champ (ex Kwibred LOL) The Race to me was a great start point to build on, but geez we gotta give our races rich in history some bloody respect dammmn....yeh I know what yuh mean about the FFA, the guns from THE CUP usually do battle again in that, that was the tradition; an AllStars Mile whoar Mark & Co be spoilt for choice Cheers Iraklis

    NZ Cup Week Pow Wow?

The real fans will still get behind it, yes, but when you watch that 1983 final, or even the heats (and while 1983 wasn't the last great year, it is certainly the year that lives in my memory more than any other), there's just nothing there currently to really capture the public imagination at all. Or even interest them casually for that matter. You cannot market an outdoor long-drop in The Tron as an upmarket villa in Remmers, no matter how much you dress it up.

This is the WRONG direction an extra 20 or 50K won't matter to the top end stakes...unless its hundreds of thousands the best will go for the BIG money in OZ...grass roots is where it is needed to keep the battlers involved or soon there will be very few left.It won't be long before the Guineas are up north and hard to see a Grand National in CHCH next year...JMO.

  30. They have punters who love to gamble and a State government who provide millions to the sport. Also, they have Peter V'landys at the helm. I see overnight the State govt has pulled the pin on promised funding to upgrade NRL infrastructure in Sydney due to budget constraints as a result of all the recent flooding etc. V'Landy's response was either give us what you promised or we will take events to Queensland and nobody doubts if he was serious

Think Idolmite could be right. The last 2 Interdoms have been devoid of any great memory. The last one was won by a 'Claimer' horse 'Boncel Benjamin' at Menangle. No Doubt KING OF SWING is a superstar but failed to take the glory in that one at his home track Menangle.. The only pretty much TOP horse was Ultimate Sniper at Auckland in the previous Interdominion. The Aussies were a '2nd Tier' bunch. and failed miserably. Don't think Ultimate Sniper ever raced again after that Grand Final. MACH SHARD was 2nd Best 2019 so that speaks for itself on the quality, as Idolmite is suggesting. Hasn't set the world on fire. Where's your next LAZARUS or SMOLDA ? (maybe Akuta can get to that Interdom Level ?) Mark knows best how to do it anyway .......

I don't think we disagree on the importance of correct grammar and diction. But even though some of the phrases used on air may not be grammatically correct, you have to take into account commonly used industry terms, phrases and slang. A horse that "goes good" is a commonly used phrase and, while we don't deny that the grammar there is incorrect, people still utilise the phrase. Using phrases like this can make a presenter seem more personable and relatable. Might I add, Pip's best, value and multi all won on Monday. I don't mind a couple of "mispronounced words" for some decent racing knowledge. .

Pressed the wrong emoji as a response in your post I'm afraid. It should have been a serious frown....Grammar and diction is not about an opinion....it's a well established base of language data that should be taught/ was taught for millennia. It is the foundation of an entire language base that is universally acceptable enough to endure formal examination that makes up part of a universally acceptable school curriculum. It starts with spelling and finishes with grammar. Any presenter should have an understanding of this.....enough said because if you don't understand this then it tells me a lot about those who object to this position.

Im with Berri on this. Who doesn't criticise a player in sport watching them? If you put yourself in the professional arena you get criticism. Its part of the game. It wasn't personal it was an observation that could make her better. Its the usual Kiwi thing. Its ok unless its someone we know/or like then its an issue.

  41. I am concerned about the funds our TAB pays to sporting bodies. I looked through the April - June 2022 figures for Points Bet Holdings, a listed Australian company. Their Canadian subsidiary held sports bets totalling CAD16,000,000. Their net win on that turnover was CAD200,000. Yes, that's right. 1.25% of turnover. Sports betting is nowadays hugely competitive and various sporting outfits will be looking for a big payout on all the huge betting turnover they generate. But that betting has a minuscule profit. In sports betting turnover is an irrelevant figure. Nett margin is a much more important figure, and really, the only figure that matters.
