  1. Kingsbeer, one of our regular contestants, has very generously donated $300 to sponsor a one-day "LONGSHOT" comp. An entry thread will go up this evening but here is how it will work. The objective is to pick longshots, ie. horses paying $10 or more to Win (based on closing NZ TAB tote price). You have to pick 12 horses across 5 specified meetings (per entry thread). Provided the horse is paying $10 or more when the Win tote closes, you will have $10 each way on the horse. If the horse closes paying less than $10 on the Win tote then your selection will be invalid - you will earn nothing. We know that the tote Win prices can shorten from when you make your selections so you need to aim for longshots who are unlikely to shorten to under $10. A simple example to illustrate this. My selection closes paying $10.50 for the Win and $3.30 for the Place and runs second - I collect $33 from the $10 place bet. However if the horse runs second but closes paying $9.70 for the Win and $3.30 for the Place, I will collect nothing because the Win dividend was less than $10. The place dividend has no bearing in whether the bet stands or not, but it can form part of the collect if the Win price meets the $10 threshold. You can make your selections in any of the races across the 5 meetings. No limit on number of selections at a particular meeting, but you can only pick one horse per race. Scratchings - if any of your selections are scratched you can replace them right up to the posting deadline (start time of the first race on the day). If you don't replace them that is your loss - your selection is invalid and you lose that opportunity for a collect. Late scratchings and abandoned races are just bad luck - too tricky for the scorers to be picking up replacements on the fly after the posting deadline. The winner will be the person with the highest total collect across their 12 picks. The prizes will be: $200 for the winner $70 for the runner-up $30 for the 3rd place finisher In the event of ties the prize money will be split using normal dead-heat splits, eg. two way tie for 1st each will receive $135. Usual story with prizes - they will take the form of a single bet (win and/or place) with any collect split 50% to the entrant and 50% recycled to future comps. Thanks Kingsbeer - much appreciated!

These personal attacks on Pip Morris are in poor taste. I think she does a good job as a presenter. She is knowledgeable and well informed.

Scooby....I agree with Palliser and had the same reaction. You might remember the wrath I copped when I called out an appalling piece of commentary on Trackside. Wasn't that long ago. I also approached Trackside. I gave them an outline which had been provided to me by a BBC correspondent which outlined the simple protocols that presenters need to incorporate to do the job properly...you know....lesson 101 stuff. I followed up to understand what happened to the suggestions because I received no response....nehts, nada, nothing....typical TAB type behaviour. Our industry presentation is so mediocre it's embarrassing. That we have to point out that Trackside is a front shop window to our industry and that the quality of our industry is reflected through the presenters, is wrong. We need people who can speak with knowledge, correct grammar (a horse doesn't "go good" it "goes well"), and pleasant diction. That unfortunately is not happening at the most basic level. I'm with Palliser on this one

Are you joking, I have awhile ago, they just said thank you. Oh well let's just be happy with mediocrity and maybe that is why the industry is stuffed and our Australian counterparts leave us in the dust. I shouldn't need to reach out, they should be identifying things that need improvement and train their staff.

  5. He ran second in the first elimination of the Hambo and won with one of only 2 fillies entered in it in Jiggy Jog. Here below is the video, watch the finish as she finishes like a Ferrari from just in behind. The favorite and other filly in the race is Joviality who is the only millionaire and who also has beaten the boys at will. In fact, she now has a record of 19 starts 15 wins 2 seconds and a third for $1,279,898 Dexter would be nuts to choose the colt over here IMO. I will post the 1st elim below the second one here. Rebuff actually may well be the favorite, this colt is a machine and has not lost since last year Below is Dexter interview after his win in the second heat

Im with Berri on this. Who doesn't criticise a player in sport watching them? If you put yourself in the professional arena you get criticism. Its part of the game. It wasn't personal it was an observation that could make her better. Its the usual Kiwi thing. Its ok unless its someone we know/or like then its an issue.

This is the commentary link to Bruce's race call on The Ryder Stakes R 6 at Te Rapa 30.07.22. Watch and note how Bruce identifies McNab on Pacific Dragon as being in front at the home turn. Sophmaze looms, and looks the danger. Bruce got it right.. Thanks Bruce . Rev

  14. The trials scheduled for Otaki on Tuesday 9 August have been cancelled due to the extremely wet weather and wet tracks in the central region over the past weeks. NZTR and RACE are looking at the possibility of scheduling a set of trials on the synthetic track at Awapuni on Thursday 18 August. This will be confirmed or otherwise next week.

Pip Morris does ok with her presenting, but needs Trackside to give her some grammar training, and also training regarding around pronunciation. Today at the dogs which is her strong point she pronounced Cousteau as Cost - de - o .. and Adobe as A-dub-e .. just a wee bit embarrassing, it happens regularly and she's not the only one. I would have thought presenters performance is scrutinized just like any employee ?

I don't think we disagree on the importance of correct grammar and diction. But even though some of the phrases used on air may not be grammatically correct, you have to take into account commonly used industry terms, phrases and slang. A horse that "goes good" is a commonly used phrase and, while we don't deny that the grammar there is incorrect, people still utilise the phrase. Using phrases like this can make a presenter seem more personable and relatable. Might I add, Pip's best, value and multi all won on Monday. I don't mind a couple of "mispronounced words" for some decent racing knowledge. .

Look it doesnt matter if the person is a fill in. Trackside would have a suite of speakers. and a responsibility that they all could impart information clearly.. Its the only job FFS. Sick of hearing guys that rabbit on and both sexes that sound ill educated. You would swear some had just fallen out of a pub.

Pressed the wrong emoji as a response in your post I'm afraid. It should have been a serious frown....Grammar and diction is not about an opinion....it's a well established base of language data that should be taught/ was taught for millennia. It is the foundation of an entire language base that is universally acceptable enough to endure formal examination that makes up part of a universally acceptable school curriculum. It starts with spelling and finishes with grammar. Any presenter should have an understanding of this.....enough said because if you don't understand this then it tells me a lot about those who object to this position.

They are about as personal as you can get, and if you don't realise that, that's not you, not on everybody else. Who are you to decide what is professional, and what is not? It's all only personal opinion, is it not?

Does it really matter how a public figure is informed that all is not well? Shouldn't it be up to her bosses to provide the correction to enable improvement? The whole concept of this site (Race Cafe) was to have a voice. That is why I originally gave Dave and Ange some of my hard earnt near the beginning of this Race Cafe journey. My motivation was that we all needed a voice as we were all being ignored by the bureaucracy. That still happens and the rheems of correspondence that I have is a testament to bureaucrats not listening to their customers. Why is it that such criticism exists? Do they still read this forum or has this forum degenerated into a site that doesn't matter or rate? We, the contributors hope they still read the content on this site, as apart from some entertainment, we would like our voices heard. I suffered the wrath of everyone on here when I had my last blast on this matter. I turned PC and apologised even though I thought the content was direct and justified. Guess what...it's happened again!!

Berri, it could be argued (successfully in court I imagine) that our "front shop window" is actually better than what's actually out back in the shop itself, and the "front shop window" could be accused of false advertising if they did an even better job, as what they're selling is really "$2 shop" rubbish most days. And that's on days the meetings actually get off the ground!!!

  40. Everyone accepts jumping is finished in the SI. Just seems really strange to be persevering with the Nationals. Seems to run totally against everything else NZTR does. Marlborough got closed down because they didn't have any local horses, despite the fact they managed to fill all their fields. And yet Riccarton continues to run races with high stakes that rely totally on imported horses.
