Agree Aaron. Real pity that our new CEO of NZTR has announced that he is going to lead the selling of assets and closure of tracks. The strength of racing over the ditch is built on every tin pot town across the country having their own racecourse and their big day in the sun, something that is gradually disappearing on our side of the ditch. Closure of tracks in not the big issue over there, on the contrary, country racing is being encouraged. Pity our leaders can't see this.

An awesome crowd turned up for the Woodville-Pahiatua races yesterday(Post Covid lets get out again crowd) , Great to see the carpark was full (Video attached) , Some reasonably good times were run 1.09s for 1200m 1.23 for 1400m 1.35 for a couple of the 1600m races on a good 3 track that seem to give everybody a chance . Seemed to be lots of young children running around everywhere having a good time , that was great to see Was 1 slight issue about midway through programme as the beer supply started to run low, but a couple committee cars down to local bottle stores replenished supplies. I congratulate all of the Woodville Racing club committee(all unpaid volunteers) for the enormous amount work they did leading up to the raceday and a fantastic effort on the day , I spoke to several of the committee later in the day that said they were that busy they didn't have time during the day to even see A race , That's what I call commitment to the industry. Next Raceday "MOTHERS DAY" Sunday 8th May , the club has a huge day planned for the public starting with a CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST (Bring Mum Along) Following that the FIELDING JOCKEY CLUB will be running their meeting here at Woodville in early june 20220418_135246.mp4

Unfortunately it has been forgotten in this country that horses are an animal and are part of the rural make up of things and it is rural people that fall in love with the horse by attending there local home town races. No one falls in love with racing by watching it on a TV screen and i'm afraid the more tracks you take away from people the less people will follow. It would be an interesting survey of those people in places like Blenheim, Gisbourne ect that have had there tracks closed in recent years how many have made the effort to go to any race meetings since. I know myself from a town that the track closed to race about 35 years ago how few people follow racing from my age(40) and younger.

yes another great day at Woodville hundreds of new faces I'd never seen before.....assume the Dannevirke Pahiatua and Woodville communities were out in force Marty and Di Catering Ltd flat out all day feeding everyone........(everybody knows Marty has the best sausages in the CD, anywhere actually )....they roped in all their whanau to help and did an excellent job, under a bit of pressure too the Head Honcho of Parking does an amazing job slotting all the cars in........well done LJ

Champion ‘chaser Zed Em has been officially retired after taking his first race fall at Pakenham on Monday. Trainer Patrick Payne confirmed the news on Tuesday via an Instagram post: ‘’Jumped like an angel until his only mistake. We admire his bravery, determination and durability. Thanks for the ride. You will have a good home and happy retirement.’’ Zed Em was to be lining up for his fifth consecutive Grand Annual Steeplechase at Warrnambool in two weeks, but it was decided that no chances were to be taken with the 11-year-old after a rare mistake at the second last fence in the Spencer Steeplechase on Monday. Zed Em was taken to the Werribee Veterinary hospital after the fall to have any injuries assessed and although he came through the potentially disastrous fall, it was decided that, after more than seven years of racing, his time had come. The Kiwi galloper, who was trained in New Zealand by Kevin Myers in between his trips to Australia, won the Grand Annual in 2019 and has been placed at his other three attempts. He also won three Von Doussa Steeplechases (2017, 2018 and 2019) and was a two-time winner of the Great Eastern Steeplechase (2018, 2019) at Oakbank. The track was outstanding, firm yep but the sole of grass and evenness was brilliant. You mention young children running around and having a good time, it was one thing I noticed and put a smile on my face, just don't seem to see that anymore at race meetings. Long may country racing continue to keep that next generation interested in the game.

This is where NZ racing has gone wrong. The clubs should be much more assertive and instead of begging to be allowed to race, they should be telling NZTR when they want to race and setting up the fixture list in conjunction with the owners, trainers and jockeys (I just love the word "hoop", ridiculous) and holding NZTR by the gonads and telling them this is when racing is going to happen. The two could easily work out a programme of races and fixtures which would work in terms of betting. It's time the Clubs realised they have the power, they own the product and should be negotiating a media rights deal with TAB not allowing NZTR to walk over them.

Why can't we get a good government? Where are the good people making good policies for the benefit of New Zealanders? Why can't we somehow get good policies in front of people who can make change? We really should be creating a virtual government that ensures people's voices are heard. .

Yes , your boys SCA and SC are on the 'outside' for the second time running. Much trickier over this shorter distance than the Grins RACE as well. Your mate Morrie Mac had a win on SelfAssured in Feb , but seems commited to the 'Hot' one drawn the Pole. Surely Marks brother-in -law, champion driver AGH will get the plum drive ? Tony catch-drove Krug once or twice as well last season, and won the GN Derby with it, so seems a great driver to have available. Knows every inch of the 'Park' too.

Correct leggy, Race 12 was abandoned long before the quaddie started; all bets on squaddie were refunded (this was announced many times on the tv)

Ultimately we r all doomed as We're doomed says, but nothing like a few wins and good racing along the way to enjoy before the doomed end arrives lol. Some folk really enjoyed THE RACE , even though some say there's a lot of Penny counting and what-not going on. Doubt anyone would buy a slot if they couldn't afford it , and like everyone involved in a sport , they're paying for the entertainment as much as anything. Can't all buy the 'winning' slot so is fun having a go though. Hope a Copy of the ALL star mile (that is run in Victoria gallops) is done next as that gathered a lot of public interest throughout Australia and NZ.. People can vote for horses on the website to get in the race , and lucky ones are drawn for each runner in the final field and could win a large prize for their support. Another wonderful idea IMO.

Funny you say that , until friday I wasn't up with all the concept, you may have read me old mate JJ flash slagging me off over a couple of post elsewhere regarding what turned out to be a sponsor, senz, have to say at the time I knew nothing about any of the concept, none of us know everything, flash dont even know how to spell know, so I'm just putting the record straight, hope he reads this and steps back and have a good look at himself, the world dont revolve around horse racing, I dont even think there was any mention on any main stream media, I could be wrong, seemed some thought it was a major event, maybe they thought the Russians would cease hostilities to watch it or listen to the race, maybe not, One conclusion I have met that if I was advertiser on senz, I'd be seeking a drop in advert charges, if they have 75 grand to buy a raffle ticket then surely they can give the bill payer a better deal, unfortunately though it seems that most of their adverts are advertising their own shows, I still stand by my word that their racing coverage is crap but as opposed to nothing I spose anything is better. Just a word on the week ahead up here - Friday sees a decent card at Sandown with the first British Group 2 of the season - the Mile. 9 have been entered but the clear favourite and clear top rated is the filly ALCOHOL FREE who last year won the Coronation at Royal Ascot and the Sussex at Goodwood. She was third in the Falmouth over the straight 1600m on the July Course and patently didn't stay the 2000m in the Juddmonte. She started her 3-y-o campaign winning the Fred Darling before running a close fifth in the 1000 Guineas. The evidence is a round 1600m suits better than a straight track and for all she has won big races on slow turf, she can go on better ground and looks well in front of these if turning up on song. Two supporting Group 3 events - the Gordon Richards is for the older horses over 2000m. MOSTAHDAF has to carry a 3 lb penalty for a Group 3 win at Newmarket last autumn but he improved rapidly through the late summer and autumn and has every chance against AL AASY who, although better rated, probably wants further and the likes of JUAN ELCANO. Last year's Classic Trial proved one of the most informative races of the season for the 3-y-o. ALENQUER beat the Godolphin pair of YIBIR and ADAYAR and it's fair to say all three went on to bigger and better things. Whether there's anything of that quality in this year's renewal is debatable - Godolphin have the favourite again in GOLDSPUR who won over 2000m as a juvenile and was third in the Criterium de Saint Cloud. Both CASH and the Aidan O'Brien trained RIVER THAMES won their sole juvenile races and could be anything. The focus switches back to the jumps for the final time this campaign on Saturday as Sandown stages the Jumps Finale meeting. The final Grade 1 is the Celebration over 3200m. Nine have been entered including Tingle Creek winner GREANETEEN and NUBE MEGRA, who was well behind in the Tingle Creek but for whom quick ground is a real plus.

Hello Tas You are correct. I'm not a huge follower these days, but my formative years in Racing were spent at the trots and I saw all of the greats during the late 70s and through the 80s. Even attended about four interdominions. I have found the Race interesting, largely because some people have suggested what a great idea it is and we should have more of them. I have never set out to convince people what a bad idea it was. Some people loved it so it did create some interest at a time when harness racing in the north is struggling. I do struggle with the concept myself as it relies on the generosity of ten benefactors who are happy to lose most of their money. It is based on the Everest, but that race is quite different in many respects. There is competition for places in the Everest, with ballots on the day, and even now commentators are discussing likely contenders for next year every time a decent sprint race is run in NSW. The Everest enhances the interest in numerous lead up races. Unfortunately in NZ we don't seem to have the depth to create competition for places and there aren't lead up races that benefit from the lure of the Race. Also most of the slots in the Everest are held by major trainers, owners or breeeders. My calculations weren't intended to convince people of my opinion. They were merely to show some people how it works based on the information I have seen. A lot of people don't understand the concept. I hope people don't mind me sharing a few thoughts occasionally. After all, one of the most prolific posters on here often tells us he never bets. At least I am a punter and my outsiders view of harness racing might be of interest occasionally. Harness racing does tend to be a closed shop at times so a bit of perspective does no harm.

WD....for someone who repeatedly tells us he's not a big follower of Trots you sure have taken a huge interest in the RACE and gone out of your way to convince us what a bad idea it was ! And you provide all sorts of $$$ calculations to convince us of your opinion ,and send us all on the road to doom and gloom.

I think I should clarify something for you Legend. You are suggesting the first three home all made money for their connections and the slotholders, and perhaps the fouth stake should be boosted so they break even as well. That isn't correct. Only the winner showed a profit for both the horse's connections and the slotholder. This is something I wrote elsewhere. No one has suggested it is incorrect. Do let me know if I have got anything wrong. The winner got $340,000, after deductions for trainer and driver. So roughly $170,000 each for the slot holder and connections, assuming it was a 50/50 split, although since it was the hot fav if I was the connections I would probably have asked for a 70/30 split. But assuming it was 50/50 the slot holder made a $95,000 profit for their investment. About a 120% return on their investment, so good work if you can get it. After deductions the second placegetter ended up with $106,250; $53,125 each for slot holder and connections. Slotholder only lost $21,875. Better luck next year. Third placegetter $36,125 for each of slotholder and connections. So slot holder lost $38,875. And so it goes as we go down to the also rans where the slot holders lost about $50,000 each. In what way does this make any sort of business sense for the slot holders? Only one of the 10 of them had any chance of showing a profit, and if this year's winning slot holder doesn't have a horse run in the first two for either of the next two years they will end up losing money overall. It was also interesting that the All Stars didn't purchase a slot. You would have thought they had every chance of winning the race and ending up with all the winning stake. Perhaps they thought it was a bad business proposition. For the connections of the winner and placegetters it was basically the same as racing in a $300,000 race. As I say, I'm not a big trotting follower these days, and I wouldn't have known the race even existed if I hadn't looked on here, and I may be missing something totally, but I just don't get the business sense in all this. Why would 10 groups of people invest in a something that they were 90% guaranteed to lose money.

Jokes aside...I hope young Savish Khetoo is O.K and recovers quickly from his injuries. Never like to see any accidents happen on course. Bad luck for the Riverton RC this Easter also.

My old boss used to always say when they are talking about you they are worried about you...its when they stop talking about you that you should be worried...John it was a great idea to run the comp and many thanks for it...everyone loved it...And as always thanks for all you do here...dont let small minded pettiness spoil it. From what I remember Pete and his sidekick Alan (Hesi),left here to set up shop with Doug but they could not get on with him so they picked up their bat and ball and set up their own place with a few members from here there as well...yes it seems maybe they are the difficult ones to get along with??. Lets just focus on what we can control John and not worry about anything other than that. You run great comps here and I guess it gets under their skin unfortunately.

Has anyone noticed the critical shortage of horses in the North , plus the severe lack of depth in good quality horses across all of NZ. I support this move to try and stem the bleeding and improve the health of Industry. The RACE has created a lot of talk and interest , IMO attracting the Aussie based horses has been pivotal in this and crucial to the future. Opening the window of the RACE , Taylor Mile , Messenger and Auckland Cup into the April/May timeslot a very good move IMO. The Aussie/NZ clashes should create a lot of interest , now and into the future. Remember the Derby and Oaks recently ,6 horse fields , good quality which I doubt the 4 yr olds could have mustered . A very positive change , the ATC now needs to promote it . Great that the admin folk are helping provide horses racing in NZ...we grizzle if admin folk lack skin in the game. Why cant our fearless leaders do something different like this ..it looked a big success just looking at it...but hey when these races are all being so well received in Oz with the various ones they have maybe we might get one organised in about 10 years...if we still have racing then.
