    Trainer/Jockey gone

I will always remember Arralucca. ....circa 1965 At Ellerslie one day when I was a schoolboy my mate and I spotted a guy throwing away a big wad of tickets in the back parade ring. Curious we walked over and checked it out. They were double tickets , I think in those days they had 3 on a raceday this was the early one. He'd had a good go at tearing through them but due to the number most were ok. The concession doubles were a really new thing and these were winning concession tickets so we sheepishly went to the old tote windows and stood tall...... each one was worth about $15 which was big stuff in those days. We had a very good day at the races , went into town and bought a brand new pair of 10 x 50's each , shouted our parents to Tony's for dinner and went snapper fishing ( Blue Boats ) on the Waitemata for the next few August holidays. In those days snapper fishing was drppping a hand line with four hooks over the side of the boat and pulling four big snapper up untill you 1/2 filled a coal sack NOT a silly sugar bag either.

    Jumping season

Evening 50 Win no 1 I'll try and answer what I can based on figures retained from last season Number of Jumpers in NZ? Last season we had 121 individual horse start in Hurdle races 72 horses which started in a Chase and 39 which start in both Hurdle and chase races; this equates to 154 Individual horse who raced in a jumps race last season How many intending to qualify this season? How long is a piece of string; sorry no data available yet but we have trials / PTP schedule for Waverley Cambridge and Rotorua. There is also Jumping days plan in Matamata so hopefully some new horse will emerge along these pathways but of course we now have the broader open so some may head to Australia for the upcoming Carnival's What grade are our Jumpers Based on last years stats: 121 Hurdlers 78 @ the end of the season were maidens 25 had won 1 race 7 had won 2 races and 11 3+ races 72 Chasers 38 @ the end of the season were maidens 18 had won 1 race 7 had won 2 races and 9 3+ races (NB; This includes the 39 Dual jumpers) Hope that answers your questions Regards Paul

  3. if El Nino or is it La Ninadoesn't peter out soon, its going to be a bog this Saturday and possibly even Slipper Day I've never seen rain like it and Zelda Kratchanova who in her youth was a tea lady at the Bureau of Meteorology reckons she's getting 10 inches a week where she lives. look for a fit Melbourne horse coming to Sydney unless in the likely event it dries out. Eeeeeeeeton !!

    I don't get it

That would have to be the understatement of the year. As Shane said, The Chosen One had to be the weight certainty of the year. Most of the races that have been changed to SW&P have ended up downgraded anyhow so it hasn't achieved anything. And all those handicaps that used to attract big fields and big betting are now getting much smaller fields with one or two stand out favs and much smaller betting. Not sure if I have mentioned it before, but the industry is being very poorly run at all levels.

  5. You are late to the party Berri. This is exactly what a lot of people have been going on about. The pattern committee noted that a lot of our higher rated horses were not going in the handicaps as felt they were getting too much weight (we do not have enough high enough rated horses). So the handicaps were being won and placed by lower rated horses. So the group 1s like the Auckland Cup, the Railway etc were getting warnings. The pattern committee wanted to protect the status of these races for breeders and nz racing industry. So to get the better horses (higher rated horses) in these races they were converted to SW&P (set weights and penalties). In SW&P basically all horses start on 55kg and you get kg for every blacktype race won in last year. Hence why we had the debacle in the Thorndon Mile of The Choosen One rated 107 receiving weight (carried 55kg) from Mali Storm rated 90 (carried 57kg). Its a mess now, progessive horses have no handicaps worth going in. So off to Australia.

  8. and Charlie you missed my one of my favourites - big old Finton, a son of Ruddington. I remember one morning riding him and leading 1 each side to the track from the Pekerau stables and as we passed the Park Lodge motel on the main road their telephone bell on the outside of the motel rang, extremely loud, and Finton jumped 10 feet sideways, right in to the middle of the road. Thank goodness nothing was coming although I think I may have slightly shit my pants!!!!

I'm wondering will our Government apply the same sanctions they put on Russia to China when it bombs Taiwan?

  10. This is not from me , im just passing it along. Not sure if anyone has already shared this....bit it came from another group.... Passed on to share... I have been seriously contemplating about posting this or not because there is already more than enough diversity between kiwis right now than ever before but stuff it!! Please note this is not a post on views or beliefs or a place to debate your views, this is just genuinely what I heard with my own ears and found it rather concerning. Earlier this week I was in wellington for work purposes, whilst I was there on Monday well over 100 police checked into the hotel I was staying at ( Allgood I was there for my job they were there for there's play on) Later that evening I was in the bar/restaurant for dinner and so was a few groups of officers and this is where I over heard a group of 6 police talking, laughing and carrying on about how the government had given them the permission to use full force on the protestors and how they had they had planted (infiltrators) violent undercover protestors and given them ammunition to cause trouble to allow the police with reason to use any force needed, joking about how they hoped not to get hit with their own bricks and how they couldn't wait to let loose with pepper spray..... Then as I'm standing at the bar getting my last drink before bed one officer who seemed a little intoxicated came to the bar, thinking I must of been one of them considering 99% of the hotel guests were police from all over he asked me "was I excited to be here an cause some mayhem" at quick thinking and not wanting to engage in conversation or lie to the guy I replied "I'm just here to find Clark Gayford mate" His reponse amazed me, "you won't find him here mate, he's up on his drug charges up north why do you think we have to wait until Wednesday to go in, it's all about distraction mate, I'm just looking forward to my bonus once we clear this scum out" Make of this what you will, it is word for word what i said and heard. Regardless of my views or yours on the protest itself the force then used on Wednesday against New Zealanders Young and old was totally disgusting considering it was all pre meditated and planned by our police and government regardless of how peaceful anyone was that day or who they were or why they were there. Again this isn't about any views or what I or you support this is genuinely something I found rather disturbing and goes to show how much our mainstream media and our government are twisting words and lying to us as well as covering things up on the daily, not to mention the PMs partner up on drug charges ??? Ps: Of course I reached out to people and media on this (surprise surprise they didn't want to know)

A $500000 race take the top two out and what a pathetic field. What a waste of funds just like the million dollar derby.Halve the stake and boost the lower end racing after all anything any good in NZ comes to Aust anyway.I have a horse having its first start in a $50000 maiden today.

Back in the 70s The Telegraph was run on the first day of the Cup Meeting, as was the Cup. In 1970 Il Tempo won the Wellington Cup with a brilliant performance coming from last 3 furlongs out to be in front just inside the furlong and winning with ease. Then Grizzly won The Telegraph later in the day, The George Tattersalls was run on the last day of the meeting and in 1970 it was won by Honey Belle.

  16. Best bet $$$$ are the incremental amount entrants earned from their best bets. For example in my case, my selections in the two best bet races earned $247. My score for those two races was doubled to $494. Therefore the incremental best bet $$$ were $247.

  20. Tardini winner of the Avondale Cup another that comes to mind but the horse that created much laughter around my kitchen table was JUROBI. Many a dispute was had regarding the trainers ability and that of the man who purchased it. All in good fun and washed down with a cup of tea and a generous supply of bakery food from TAs best.

  21. Crusty, Really really sad to hear about the passing of Des Riordan today. As a youngster he was my hero alongside his foreman,(and Dad) Mike Claydon Like you said Crusty , Mateland, Mannix , Heflu, Grizzly Arralucca, Set, Ocean Monarch , Bonnybard, Le Fripon the half brother to Le Filou, Gaydrill, Wattle and how about Grasshopper, Des's last winner as a trainer, D A Peake , from a mile last at Te Rapa, gets up down the outside fence when Te Rapa used to be a bog . And all the advice he had for his great mate Jim Mouat who trained Danzapride. Mind you I had a heap of advice over the years as well and yes Des , it worked !! Noel ( Il Tempo), Johnny(JP) Sailing Home and Summer Regent who won a Cox Plate and then there was Des, Rider of Baby Dakar and Keith and trackwork rider of MAINBRACE .. Des trained Grizzly to win the George Adams Tattersalls(Now the Thorndon Mile) on the 1st day and then Grizzly and brother Noel come out and win the Telegraph on the last day ! Absolute Legend and an absolute gentleman, looked after everybody he could in Te Awamutu and the Waikato in everybody;'s later years RIP Des

  25. Had a bet on Pin Up in the last at Turffontein last Saturday night and checked the results on Sunday morning. The horse had won and divvies for the race were all declared in results. When I checked my resulted bets there was no divvy payout just a refund of my initial bet. ?????? Went back and checked the results again and they had been changed to Race Abandoned.?????? Checked websites for the TAB's in South Africa and Australia and they showed that in fact the race had indeed been run and won by Pin Up. There were the divvys , margins, time etc. What the heck is going on with our NZ TAB ???? Incidentally, my win bet in Race 7 at Turffontein which ran 2nd was resulted and correctly showed as no payout with the loss of my investment. Begs the question though, if my bet in Race 7 had been successful would the NZ TAB have declared that race as abandoned as well ?????? Any ideas????
