    NZTR Consultation Paper

I saw this paper before going away. My hackles rose. Why don't TR sort there own house out. Leave the poor licence holders alone. They are under enough poverty stress as is it is without having more costs imposed. There is a bloated RIU, already to take the overview of operations. This thing reeks of empire building, an endeavour to create a bureaucracy that isn't needed and a millstone around the neck of Racing. It mirrors our socialist Government whose fiddling just imposes costs and increasing poverty. Who is the "David Parker" in NZTR that wants to have stupid ways to make us poorer. Fire the idiot!

  4. Not having seen the document, I can’t comment on its contents. However, would it not be in the best interests of NZTR to ask the Owners, via some very basic research platforms available, “what they would like to see improved within the industry”. They, the owners, fund the breaking and training aspects of the horse. NZTR are woeful on so many fronts that they should look at themselves before consulting the wider industry about other aspects that require addressing. An independent audit of NZTR would have to be interesting reading for all participants in the industry. Cheers John

    So I missed out...

Hang on a minute...you're not seeing the balanced view point. In terms of Bermadez, you needed to run in the country and perform well enough to get to that race which of course was held in the city. When you've got a nice horse like Bermadez, and you've had heaps of baby issues (cracked scapula at three, pulled muscle at 4) you have to nurse them along so that they can tell you when they're ready. So this R80 race is worth the value of the Auckland Cup. Due to the structure of the championship, the press that it got, the support that it had from all those trying their hand at winning this R80 race, the betting was 4.67 times the betting of the Auckland Cup. We don't have enough good horses to race against each other so we have to embrace some novel ideas. What say we put together a R80 race with some qualifying races in Australia (definitely with conditions), where the aussie horses were funded to race (travel allowance) in the final in NZ. What would happen? That's the sort of thinking that you need to have a go. I'm not saying it will 100% work, just that we need to become creative because at the moment we're dead. Why might you think that?....I live in NZ and I've just sent another very nice horse to Aussieland to race....go figure....one less

    LAVER YOU BEAUTY

Well seen Mr Janitor. Your boy Laver winning very well again today , a Group race in Southland .3 wins and a close 2nd past 4 starts now over past month. going like a train. If they have that 'Race' at Cambridge worth 900k he has to be a great chance?. He raced there in the Jewels during Winter and closed in late on South Coast Arden in 1.52 (SCA went on to win the NZ FFA group 1 in November) so over the 2200m , Laver could well be getting past South Coast Arden this time round?. Hope he gets a 'Slot'. big chance.

  8. What would this achieve ? Historically clubs don't work together in NZ , volunteers stretched enough looking after own club ,though Race , Southern racing and other regions combined administration in recent times and some 'community' clubs run by someone from another community ! Maiden races tend to attract lowest betting .......owners of these slugs tend to hang on to them for a while as they invested heavily in them and they not attractive to sell. If the idea is to attract more betting ,a spike would be easier to achieve over a Carnival eg Cup week or Melbourne Cup day when the population hyped into getting involved. This why NZTR give generous monetary support to the 5 or 6 days big NZ days of racing. Easier to make the big days bigger than get blood out of stone eg recently Reefton got 23% increase on last year ,this probably less than 1% of Melbourne Cup day ! Retaining talent and improving our horse quality is a big challenge as the rich Australian and Hong Kong owners need ,and will pay well for , our best stock. Simply NZ's racing biggest problem is being so close to Australia and their money and Industry which is ably supported by their Governments to be the best .

    Tauherinikau Page 1

Nostalgia. I first visited Tauherenikau in spring 1973. I saw a horse by Indian Order win, in a spectacular manner. Nothing really though, as Indian Order appeared in Timeform with a rating of 53 and was described as a poor handicapper that stays 13 furlongs. He had been imported by Cliff Parton. Two years later that horse, Fury's Order, won a Cox Plate.

    LAVER YOU BEAUTY

Yes, he is going well. He is a show in any company but I think the conditions of the Slot race will mean he will draw wide and that makes it hard. He can run a place again and he won't be paying $19 this time! Unfortunately, he has been too short to back lately. I would have like to see Gerard have Copy That on in the NZCup with Laver but he wasn't fit enough in November. He is a horse that needs three or four hard runs to sharpen him up and he didn't have that fitness at Cup time. He's a late developing horse so I think there is still improvement to come...

  11. The Meydan Carnival kicks off this Friday - it's a long journey to Dubai World Cup night on March 26th. For the first time, the Carnival meetings will be on Friday for the most part - they've previously been on a Thursday but perhaps given the importance of Fridays in the Islamic calendar, the authorities think they'll get more coming on from Friday prayers to the races. The opening card features two Group 2 races - the first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge is run over 1600m on the Dirt. SECRET AMBITION was a 6-length winner of the Godolphin Mile on World Cup night having been well held in the Group 1 third and final round of this challenge by SALUTE THE SOLDIER. The latter finished fifth with HYPOTHETICAL fourth in the World Cup itself which was decent but I just think back at this trip SECRET AMBITION looks the one. The Cape Verdi is for the fillies and mares over 1600m on the grass. SOFT WHISPER is clear top rated having won the UAE 1000 Guineas in a canter last year but she was well held by the colts in both the Saudi and UAE Derbies and while she won a Listed at Newmarket in the autumn, she was found out at Group 3 level. She's one of three for Godolphin and Frankie Dettori rides for Saeed Bin Suroor but Charlie Appelby has two strong contenders and William Buick rides WEDDING DANCE who was behind SOFT WHISPER at Newmarket but did it well on the Tapeta at Wolverhampton in a lesser race and over just 1400m. It's an open and slightly weak race for the grade - a tentative selection is the French galloper PEVENSEY BAY who ran well at Deauville last time in Listed company.

    So I missed out...

Haha...well done with Bermudez , Vic racing obviously saw it better for 8 Country tracks to run heats for the final .....than let battling country trainers race for big money !They should change their advertising as clearly it states ,,,the race is for country trainers licensed in Victoria without a metropolitan base nationwide. Of course NZ has 2 x Dunstan Feeds finals [ 1600m and 2200 ] on NY day which has heats for R74 and below worth $100k.....which money wise / affordability is similar to the one you won.Dunstans give a bit of sponsorship ,or at least some bags of feed while nominated horses pay an entry fee and a second payment and an acceptance fee which I quickly calculated to be about $40 k which makes it basically a sweepstake race. NZ owners are a gullible resilient lot.....they not in it for the money. But it's not genius if you have a nice horse to send it to Aussie , its bloody obvious ! But when all the nice horses are sold or go off shore to race , don't you think it unfair that you or anyone should then cry on here that NZ Group 1's lack both quality and depth. Of course they do..... so whose fault is it ? Blame laid fair and square at the feet of NZTR Admin and maybe the TAB. They get their money to implement new exciting races from the betting public who prefer to bet on the nice NZ horses taken to Australia or just Australian racing fullstop. Spoken to at least 10 folk this week ,regular punters/ ex-attendees on course and without exception they said they love Aussie racing and love watching it on TV...the courses ,the great jockeys the overall excellence of the racing and horses. I asked...but is it better than the NZ diet of maidens and one win races from Kumara [mainly $12k stakes] and Marton last Saurday ? .....haha. But who can blame them..so 10 folk at the beach is not a good sample ,more like mother-in-law research so consider the FACTS. NZ punters .......remember many Kiwis dont use the NZTAB cos bigger Aussie outfits can offer more .......NZ punters bet more on the NZ TAB on Aussie races than NZ races. And more than 85% of races on TAB come from overseas. NZ tries to copy overseas initiatives....we have Country cups....worth about $30 k ,some higher eg Taupo $65 k after club boost. It's all relative .It's all NZ can afford ! Read the Messara report again ...currently not one track considered a good surface and most facilities below an acceptable standard !

  13. I'm sure Berri will know, heh, but the original Steeplechases were 'races between Steeples', i.e. between two different churches. Presumably you could use any route you liked to attempt that feat! (I was impressed at the variety of different fences on that French course, though..._ And, Shad, I remain incredulous that Bono 'still hasn't found what he's looking for.' Any decent hardware store would stock bloody big mirrors that would enable him to fill that bill...

  15. Oi, you lot, no dissing George. Way way back in the day when Auckland had a decent Christmas/New Year racing programme - four days at Ellerslie and two nights at Alexandra Park - I fronted to AP before the first race there and had an 'interest' bet on the last of the day's races down at (I think) Rotorua. That race was telecast on course at AP... Except that, dunno why, there was no audio link. George just happened to be in 'our' stand on the AP course and - with nothing much to aid him other than a cursory look at the form guide - gave a near perfect commentary to an enthralled audience. PS Happy New Year to all...

  16. Harry has already reported this but very sad news out of Ireland late this afternoon with Aidan O'Brien confirming the death of Oaks winner SNOWFALL. https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/record-breaking-oaks-heroine-snowfall-suffers-fatal-injury-says-aidan-obrien/531490 Apparently she suffered a serious pelvic injury - initially the prognosis was good but her condition deteriorated so much in the past couple of days euthanasia was the only option. It's a huge breeding loss as she was a daughter of Deep Impact and arguably his most successful daughter outside the Far East (SAXON WARRIOR his most successful son). She won the English Oaks by an incredible 16 lengths and followed up in the Irish and Yorkshire Oaks putting her right in the frame for the Arc before she was beaten in the Vermeille by TEONA. From there, she still ran in the European championship race and finished sixth, beaten less than five lengths and barely a length behind the Derby and King George winner ADAYAR. Her career ended with a third in the Champions Day Fillies & Mares and the plan was for her to go to ST MARK'S BASILICA in the spring. Just as a reminder of how good she was, the 2021 English Oaks:

  17. Hi Cooper, I will correct you ! This quite obvious comparison has arisen in past couple of years....and I think you started the thread last year as well ,you old stirrer you.......it wasn't an issue the previous few years as the unique Kumara day suffered some terrible setbacks thru heavy rain and the local pigs digging up the track in parts ,which not only stopped a day proceding but was a concern throughout another. Plus a bad fall in a race saw a race abandoned and a jockey in hospital. I wondered how the lad fared ?The day wasnt held 2017 ,18 & 20. You are incorrect stating Kumara was to be closed. The 2018 Messara which was around the time of the above setbacks said that the other existing West Coast courses should race at Kumara.....I'd think ,good luck with that as a regular stalwart ranter on here called Reefton always gives the impression that the Coast clubs don't 'care much 'for each other. He pushes his Reefton day , and unsure if he even attends Kumara ,but pushes his chest out after Kumara because the day is such a huge success......nothing in NZ matches it....the crowd comes from all over ...between 6 and 9,000 people. And betting numbers are pretty good....on course bets would be hardly matched in NZ...only on big feature days and maybe the Wairarapa day on Jan 2. The West Coast has prime dates over early New Year and Kumara gets the Saturday when betting highest as well....its results for a small country track are exceptional.....overall twice offcourse what Greymouth and Reefton do ,and 3 x times oncourse of those two. Kurow the week prior considered big....Kumara doubles it on-course and + 50% off. So the comparison with a 'low key 'Ellerslie meet ,which I think Avondale once held , is somewhat pointless.....but effective for scoring points ! Ellerslie had a miserable crowd , as it does a few times a year ! That meeting would be much better at Thames[closed] or maybe Tauranga [ cricket] ...as the Northern area has about 70% of NZ's horses it justifies the meetings ! The poor old South Island has 25% of NZ's betting so gets less meetings ....about 25 %. Overall Ellerslie still averages more total betting per day than the Kumara day , as do the other NZ main tracks which hold the Group 1 days.....but no one can match Kumara's day in the sun ! Not even Kumara itself ,which puts the Messara suggestion in doubt.Kumara tried to replicate it in past with 2 x days and when forced to hold the day at Greymouth in 2020 the day nothing like the real thing ! It's unique...if this is your joke have a good laugh ! NZTR support the day ....not with extra stakes but in extra services ,such as bussing tote staff ,plus accomm from CHch to Nelson/Kumara/Nelson. .Maybe thats the TAB but ,NZTR push the day on social media/website ,there are trainers prizes for the Coast circuit and the Kumara facilities have had nice grants from the Redevelopment fund ...$50k for track etc Of course Kumara have had to spend between $100 - $300k on doing up track. Dunno why Ellerslie raced Sunday ,but that obviously helped Kumara and Marton. So its no joke...if you want a giggle , google the Relicensing application for Booze put in by the club.....the Authority said who ever presented it didnt have a clue ,and it described people spewing etc etc.It noted the club needs to get to grips with alcohol ! Funny how when Ellerslie , Riccarton , Trentham have their big day many say its the young folk just going for the piss up , the food ,the music and the Fashion parades BUT when Kumara does it it's the greatest thing since sliced bread ! I also note the guy who is referred to in past as the clubs head stipe [RIU] is the Club manager .Liked the day so much ,he stayed !

    No Forbury Replacement

Right handed - more money to be won that way in the north Pukekohe direction varies too - with 2 tracks plus a jog track no worry here. It all up to the trainer.

  19. Let's not forget a small crowd at Ellerslie would make Kumara look packed. Ellerslie is a huge complex, with multiple outdoor and indoor areas. Kumara? Not so much. Put it in perspective. Us Aucklanders also have a lot more things to do up here.
    1 point
  20. Correct......I did the trifecta.....no one in town , then beach which had fewer than usual.....to Ellerslie ,where very warm and the hundreds there all inside as stated , then a Movie @ 5.15 .........bets on Nelson trots checked /watched later in warm evening ! Us Dorklanders can't win......the rest of country ,after laughing at us under house arrest keeping the lid on the Virus for them , most recently pleading at us to travel and spend our $$$$$'s on their so called tourist attractions which we been visiting since we were foetuses ! And many of us have...I knew dozens of folk who ventured south to the West Coat circuit ,Central Otago circuit or just relaxed in Tasman area /Heaphy track etc. Now we get 'laughed' at again for not attending......giving 6 hours to .....a low key "industry type " day in searing heat at Ellerslie , soon after 2 x Group days racing over Xmas/New Year and a prelude to the must-attend Karaka night meeting ! There were some very pleased attendees at Ellerslie....owners / trainers winning nice stakes , jockeys booking rides for Karaka night and horses qualifying for big races around corner. 8 races, $370k stakes paid ......club contributed /boosted stakes etc. No doubt the naysayers will leap in with Industry subsidising stakes ,blah ,blah, blah.......but a lot of hopeful/positive people in industry still ,making the most of what's currently available. This Virus has been tough but surely not as damaging to one's health as constant negativity and the debilitating green -eyed monster of envy..truly a deadly sin. Kumara puts on a great day , in context ,but the Annual comparison of Reefton, Waikouaiti etc with Ellerslie ......NZ's only 'International' racecourse really is laughable.

  21. thanks @Barry Lichter@We're Doomed@Navitas We see the wider family name Rosenberg is tied in with Gleneagles Securities in NSW. Is Justin Rosenberg the son of Lance Rosenberg who was involved in controversial property deals around 10 or so years ago in Australia? @Memphis2@Peter Jenkinsand those in Aussie do you know or have you heard about these people? We see Gallen were also tied up in controversy also in Australia in the last year - if you look them up on Google there's a huge trial of dishonesty and failed ventures. Maybe it's time these matters were reported to the appropriate authorities bc of the ongoing destruction they are doing to our Reserves and Green fields we should be ensuring are protected in Perpetuity as was wisely undertaken for our betterment under Racecourse Reserves Acts in the 1800's. Is it also true the Maruo Barsi is a former lawyer? We see he has a background in various projects in other areas of Racing. Did he have any involvement with the USA deal ? May we assume he and others know they have legal obligations as Board Members and can be held to account. Is the Mark Sumich the same one who got into hot water for bowling Workers Cottages in Remuera Road and operated an unlawful carpark?

  22. This should be a lesson to all clubs that decide they would like to become property developers because it seems like an easy way to make money. If they can't run their core business properly it is surely stretching it to think they can successfully run a totally new venture.

not good enough....CEO of NZTR... I just hope that the next CEO is as forward thinking and courageous as we need, this being demonstrated in Aussie. Two new races added to the Magic Millions program....The Debut for horses that have never raced over 900m worth $500,000 and a horse worth $1,000,000 for horses raced in a syndicate with more than 20 owners. I just hope like hell that the new CEO of NZTR has the kahoonas to invent things like this to get the interest flowing...
