  1. Got home and been thru the scoring.. John's scoring is totally 100% correct and CONFIRMED. Been perusing the scores and some fantastic results but by far and away the best performer of the day was John (Say No More) in the way he stepped in and did an amazing job in trying circumstances. With all the Scratchings, then late Scratching and people trying to sub in Scratchings with others that were also Scratched, people not picking enough BB's and some being greedy picking 3, people missing picks etc but he got them all sorted and still came in with a 100% correct outcome.... I can categorically say that with what happened yesterday I would have had several muck-ups... but not John. The next best performer of the day was Team Gunsynd... I scored the best total I have in the comp and Team Gunsynd had their best round of the comp .I think that's a hint that I need to go away again next weekend....I just need to find a scorer.!! For John I want to give you $100 to spend next week on any bet type you want. Thanks again John. Ponderosa (Paul)

  3. Yes very sad. My first visit to Trentham was St Leger day many years ago; also had the Chalmers stakes, Benny something won it I think. And I think The Twinkle beat Mun Lee in the big mile. Even today, Labour weekend, used to be a big meeting. It has certainly fallen from grace in every respect, and the place looks a dump.

    NZTR Directions Paper

There is a lot of reference to clubs as they hold the power in Members Council and thence NZTR. The so called sector groups. Owners Trainers and Jockeys are in a minority position. So the pressure comes from the wrong directions - to the detriment of racing.. Re the synthetic, an associate has been requesting the wagering figures of Cambridge . There has been no disclosure. They've clammed up Re the venue plan, there is a glaring hole top of S.i. - Blenheim!!!!. Re the whole report its OK, but LESS IS MORE., too much dribble in it.

  6. That may be true. Though, I would much prefer to bet into a multi-million dollar pool (HK), than a $3-5K pool (OZ/NZ racing) here in the US. However, my initial post was not directed towards the punter, though, in the end, they benefit as well.. My post was addressing Aaron's concern about driviing up turnover to increase purses. Simple formula really. Highter turnover = Higher purses = greater ownership involvement/sustainablility = more horses bred/bought/sold = more horses running in races = equals better betting opportunities for the punter.; and repeat. It really is a no lose situation.

    Cox Plate Field….

Berri ,you seem quite negative about NZ racing ....yet again .....but looking at the Australian racing yesterday I didn't feel so bad about it...far from it ! Our horsemen/women seemed to do OK ...that is our jockeys and trainers while the horses were there abouts . You will know the numbers ,but in most areas ...population ,economy , betting ,horse numbers etc I think Aussie [ and UK ] at least 5 to 10 times bigger than NZ. So I was intrigued to see the amazing Cox Plate race with its massive stake only had 8 starters....EIGHT....4 of them had NZ beside their name, one ran a close 3rd and the other two IMO were unsuited by rain and distance. Two of the starters were having their first start in Aussie and the winner a lightly raced UK horse. In the other big race of day ,a Kiwi was warm favourite and had no favours ,ran 4th ,while the race was a NZ bred by Sacred Falls ! Then earlier I note a recent NZ export by Super Easy picked up a sprint race etc etc. i thought NZ breds had quite a good day ....you describe our horses as NOT good or poorly bred. As for your suggestion that NZ needs to invest in the top mares and top stallions I cant see where the money comes from for this ? What Kiwis could buy these...to race for NZ stakes ? Our stakes rely on NZ punters.......you also want bigger tracks built that can cater for 24 horse field !...to increase betting profits ....yeah right ! Do punters want 24 x horse fields and will the owners of these super expensive horses want to be racing 23 others ? I just cant follow your vision at times !

  8. Yesterdays Cox Plate was at least a validation of the points ratings, callsign mav performed as well as expected according to the ratings, and other horses and races can be assessed against his mark, and those ratings tell the story whether good or bad.If a race has regular low rating fields it will/ should be downgraded unfortunately.Money does not make a horse run faster but it might keep a few more callsigns racing here and contain the gradual decline.

  9. I question the validity of group races in our country. The Thompson Handicap is, at best, a listed event, not Group 3. Wellington's Wakefield Challenge Stakes might possibly, at a stretch, be Group 3, but is certainly not of Group 2 standard. The year by year deterioration in the standard of racing at Trentham has been sad. This from a person who as a 14 year old lad joined the throng to see Stipulate run second to Great Sensation.

  11. The co-mingling of international pools. Imagine if the Chinese were able to bet into NZ tote pools. Would result in record turnover. I'm sure the technology exist, just not the will to work out the appropriate interational agreements. In the US, I am able to bet into the HK pools. Makes for some excellent betting opportunities. And then, there are those like me that would love the opportunity to bet into the NZ pools, but cannot. Our wagers here on NZ and OZ racing go into a central hub (I believe located at Woodbine racecourse in Toronto, but I could be wrong). In any event, the paultry amount to handle does not make it worthwhile to have a bet. Co-mingling worldwide pools is the way to go.

    Cox Plate Field….

STATE OF REST returned 13/2 over here after ZAAKI was scratched and I had a fiver each way at 10s last evening. That'll pay for a nice Sunday lunch for Mrs Stodge tomorrow !! STATE OF REST was rated 115 after the Saratoga Derby win and this would put him to say 120 over here. I think we can discount the line through KHARTOUM as that was a first outing of the season and STATE OF REST clearly needed the run. He's come to the Cox Plate on only his third run of the 2020 campaign - unlike ADELAIDE in 2014 who had also won in America but then ran third in the Niel at Longchamp. There's not many common points of reference - STATE OF REST beat SECRET PROTECTOR four lengths at Saratoga and that horse is rated only 106 in the UK so perhaps STATE OF REST only had to run to 115 to win this. He gave the second 16 lbs or 7 kg which was no mean feat. I gather the MacKinnon is next on the list for the winner - MAGIC WAND won it in 2019 also rated 115 up here having run fourth to LYS GRACIEUX in the Cox Plate. Final thought - MISHRIFF tried to win the Champion Stakes worth £715,000 having won the Juddmonte at York. He's a well-travelled horse - they could have brought him to Australia - he'd have dotted up in the Cox Plate and trousered £1.7 million for his owners. To be fair, important though the Cox Plate is, the Saudi Cup comes in at £7.3 million so you can understand why connections want to forget the Breeders Cup and head there again.

    Isn't it about time

We stopped the repeated process of renaming horses with names that were those of group winners of not that long ago. Melody Belle by Taipan, trained by Ray Verner was seriously good. Then there was Melody Belle by Commands. Today I notice that the favourite of the 2000 Gns is Noverre. Noverre only just died, was a very good race horse and a half brother to Arazi. Why do we do this/ I don't get the logic

    Cox Plate Field….

Just the one European representative in this year's renewal. STATE OF REST is a lightly raced 3-y-o trained by Joseph O'Brien who knows how to win the big Australian prizes. He was a decent juvenile last year running third to CHINDIT in the Champagne at Doncaster before getting bogged down in the Doncaster mud in the Vertem Futurity. After a long lay off he returned with a third in a Listed at The Curragh - the second that today, KHARTOUM, trained by Joseph's father Aidan, was eleven lengths behind CREATIVE FORCE in the Jersey and nine lengths behind BAAEED at Goodwood. Now, I suppose you could say what chance would BAAEED have if he were in the Cox Plate field? If you think STATE OF REST is about 10 lengths inferior to BAAEED that probably explains his 110 rating. Last time, he went to America and won the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby over 1950m. He had the once-time Derby favourite BOLSHOI BALLET in fourth and a fair Godolphin type in SECRET PROTECTOR in fifth and on that you could see why his rating is up to 115. 115 isn't a bad mark - solid Group 2 performer over here - so that's the barometer to set the standards of Australian and UK racing. I think he's a solid each way bet at 10s and I'd like to think he won't do too badly. ZAAKI would be long odds on if it hadn't been for his defeat in the Might and Power last time but my eye is drawn to ANAMOE - geography means he gets 16 lbs from STATE OF REST which looks a bit off to me. The question I have is why he is 3/1 while CAPTIVANT is 14s - was there that much between them in the Caulfield Guineas and over an extra 400m is it not possible CAPTIVANT could be superior?

  21. I knew Arthur quite well and had a number of conversations with him about imported mares. As with everything you're only as good as your weakest link. He was trying to buy quite well related mares from the US for buttons. The result was that the mares he was buying were pedigrees without performance nor conformation. Two missing links. US form is very different. If you go to the early 1990's NZ studs had a love affair with American stallions. They came here in their droves....Crested Wave, Racing is Fun, Spectacular Love, Pompeii Court, Mi Preferido, Indian Ore and Defensive Play are a few that drip off my tongue. Patrick even got in the action by buying a half to Ferdinand, Castel Cheline through Moroney and me .Our argument was that if you go after American blood, make sure its the best of the best and drug free.

  22. I only know what I see on the telly of Japan…..but they always seem to be fast run staying races, and often on very hard ground, and consequently the horses have fluent actions because that’s the type of horse suited to those races Stayers with good actions are a dream come true for Australian racing……..because that’s where they’re weak over there

But Stu Laing was the brains as agent behind the Lance O'Sullivan success. Not neccessarily picking winners on tv but e pert in reading form or horse ability that would suit the LAO style.
