    Verry Elleegant

From Chris Waller Racing Facebook page: "Verry Flash was born at Grangewilliam Stud in 2014, bred by Don Goodwin and Christina Guy in New Zealand. He was a flashy looking fellow and when naming him, Don and Christina thought they would add an extra R in Verry, for something different. The following year, his dam Opulance had a filly. They decided to go with the theme of Verry however it wasn’t until Don and Christina were at their cousins holiday home taking a break, when Christina was gazing out the window and noticed their car had Elegance written across the side of it. Their granddaughter is named Ellee and after playing around this a few words, they came up with the name Verry Elleegant. So along with the Verry theme, you could say she was named after the Goodwin’s Granddaughter, and also their very nice car."

The below extract is from the NZTROF Bulletin September 2020. Two of us went to Te Akau farm and interviewed David Ellis. NM Mike asked David which was the best horse they had trained. After a long silence, David replied. “That is a very hard question, Avantage is right up there. She has Group wins in both Australia and New Zealand, Group One wins at 1200m, 1400m, 1600m and 2000m and a race record there as well. She won her first start in October as a 2YO, won the Karaka 2YO Million, was Champion 2YO of her year, and hasn’t stopped winning since.” David explained that Avantage was only beaten once as a 2YO – when she drew the outside gate in the Group 1 Sistema Stakes. However, she resumed her winning streak and went on to win the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce. “To win the Telegraph and the Bonecrusher in the same campaign is hard to achieve, but she did it in style in the 2019/2020 season. It is pretty difficult to purchase horses that can achieve these results and I have got a big thrill out of seeing just how well Jamie Richards has trained this mare.”

You're all going to climb into me for the following observations but I don't see it clearly. I'd have loved to own this mare but feet on the ground, I find it difficult to value her in the top top bracket. Her pedigree is so so, she's not big and her form is also so so when you compare her to what there is on the World markets. Franked New Zealand racing form is abysmal. Here in NZ Avantage won 9 group ones. Couldn't win one in Aussie. Got rolled by Melody Belle when they met (and Melody Belle made her look ordinary) where Melody Belle (looking like a champion in NZ) also struggled in Aussie. Go back and look at the horses that both of them beat when winning their group ones and ask yourself the question...would the horses they beat have won a group one in Aussie? Then when Avantage ran into a better one in the form of Te Akau Shark, he thrashed her in the Lion Brown at Te Rapa. So we have finally come to this place which is horrible...namely that a bloke like me can't value her correctly on her group one form. What a disaster. So that you can understand what I am talking about I'm going to give you all a basic comparison. And remember I'm talking broodmare potential although this animal was also a Aussie racehorse chance. This one had been on my radar for a while. Winner on the all weather and turf. Improving all the time. Should be racing in Australia and would make an excellent 4 yo. Great pedigree. Latest start on following link https://www.racingtv.com/racecards/kempton-park/350063-unibet-casino-deposit-10-get-40-bonus-handicap-5?non-runner_display=false The two year old, Discoveries, won the Moyglare last week. So here's the point, by Camelot Derby winner) out of a Danehill Dancer mare out of a Rahy mare, whose dam is a half sister to three group one winners on the World stage, with one of them being freak in Alpha Centauri. Just so happens that Miesque appears twice in this pedigree and Camelot's 9th dam is none other than Kincsem, a mare that was never beaten in 59 races all over Europe So on hand one is currently at $1.6m, so it may get to $2.2, versus around $300k for Countessa. Which one would you prefer to breed from?

An absolutely outstanding mare with a great pedigree, her half sister (Asathought) is one of the most promising up and comers in SI We had the privilege of running 2nd to Avantage three times, she was very well placed throughout her career I’d be quite keen to give the connections a service to SENSEI and go halves in the resulting foal!!!!!!

  5. Well spotted Cubes.....no doubt excitement increasing around Canterbury with Cup week approaching. Hopefully us 'outsiders' will be let in ! Yes , though breeding numbers on decline there still appears to be too many horses ,especially slow horses, for the amount of betting our team of 5 million generates. The wellbred horses and horses with above average ability are still much sought after by overseas buyers but the average 'run of the mill horse' who will win between 0 and 3 races keeps the trainers , agisters, breakers, blacksmiths ,vets and feed merchants in a job but the sustainabilty of the industry in NZ is solely reliant on the resilient owners such as yourself with a few spare dollars to burn. Up north its $2k a month for board and lodgings in a paddock and a little TLC ,$3.5k / month if they racing ,plus transport /vets etc. And then the majority of horses are battling to find a suitable race for a $12 k stake to race in....$6 k to winner less deductions ! Resilient owners......supreme optimists indeed ! As for the betting....hard to bet on many of the winless slugs going around with tiny NZ pools where one can often bet into the much bigger Aussie pools with horses and jockeys you know ! But hang in there ! These trials will be more important than raceday for many........many of the winners will be getting their passports ready for stamping and others will be getting ready for Cup week , avoiding the crippling NZ handicapping system ! Much to look out for......on the videos !

The auction will be interesting. Currently at $1.5million. Comparing how she goes on Gavelhouse with how Melody Belle went at a big traditional auction. Both great race mares being sold in the same year. I am a little surprised the Gavelhouse auction time is relatively short ..finishes on Wed 22nd. Anyway, good luck to all the bidders.

    Ribchester

Ran again at Haydock last Sunday in a 1400m nursery. Again, not the most fortunate of runs - got behind having been bumped at the start but ran on very well for third. Really looks like a 1600m horse at the moment. The best progeny of Ribchester up here is FLAMING RIB (by Suddenly ex Acclamation). He won a 1000m nursery at the big York August meeting for a rating of 101 but no entries currently. GISBURN hasn't run since the Coventry. Ribchester sits eighth in the freshman sires list in Britain and Ireland currently. http://www.stallionguide.com/leading-sires/ One to watch might be the filly BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE (Lovely Surprise ex Shamardal). She won on debut over 1400m at Epsom and was backed into favourite. She's in at Wolverhampton Monday evening (UK) over 1650m.

  11. The Mill Reef at Newbury saw WINGS OF WAR put up a battling performance to run down HIERARCHY in the final 150m. I got my money back when GIS A SUB was withdrawn having got agitated in the stalls but I'm not sure his antics did GUBBASS and one or two others any favours. The winner had been slightly disappointing when beaten in the Sirenia but this was a much improved effort and while he'll do well to emulate trainer Clive Cox's last Mill Reef winner, HARRY ANGEL, he's got obvious potential as a sprinter for next season. HIERARCHY is all speed and he and the winner reproduced their Sirenia form almost to the ounce. DHABAB, on the other hand, looked all at sea over the shorter trip and also looks like a horse whose back end hasn't caught up with his front end physically. He's the one I think from this race who could be a decent 3-y-o over a mile. A great night for Charlie Appleby in North America - YIBIR won the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park and WALTON STREET slammed DESERT ENCOUNTER in the Canadian International.

  12. A quiet Saturday which we'll come back to you in the next contribution. Looking ahead and next weekend, Newmarket stages its three day Cambridgeshire meeting - the ground is currently Good to Firm and there's no appreciable rain forecast. This meeting often sees the appearance of some of the higher quality juveniles especially those with more staying pedigrees who have taken longer to come to hand. Each day there are fascinating maiden races - the opening race of the meeting is a 1600m maiden for the juvenile colts and geldings. Godolphin have a number entered including newcomers AL HASSABI (Dubawi) and SYMBOL OF LIGHT (Shamardal). The quality moves up a notch on Friday with two Group 2 races. 16 have been entered in the Rockfel for the juvenile fillies over 1400m. Sweet Solera winner MAJESTIC GLORY (Frankel out of a Dansili mare) is early favourite but my eye is drawn to SENSE OF DUTY (Showcasing - Margaret's Mission ex Shamardal) who hacked up in a maiden last time and could be ready for the step up to Group company. The unbeaten filly JUMBLY (Gleneagles - Thistle Bird ex Selkirk) won well at Kempton and could be anything while JUNCTURE (Dark Angel - Occurrence ex Frankel) was runner up in the Silver Flash at Leopardstown and that looks solid form with AGARTHA going close in the Moyglare. 11 have been entered in the Group 2 Joel over 1600m. It all went wrong for BENBATL at Goodwood but he won this convincingly last year. Godolphin look to have a stranglehold as they've entered MASTER OF THE SEAS who hasn't been seen since finishing runner up in the 2000 Guineas. He's obviously the class act if he turns up but REAL WORLD is also a key contender having moved through handicaps, Listed and a Group 3 last time. Saturday has the two feature Group 1 races for the juveniles - the Cheveley Park and the Middle Park. Both are over 1200m but with the coming of the Commonwealth Cup, these races are as much of significance for the sprinters as for the classic milers. The unbeaten Irish filly SACRED BRIDGE is narrowly favoured in the ante post exchanges over the closely matched Lowther winner and runner up ZAIN CLAUDETTE and SANDRINE. Morny winner PERFECT POWER is 2/1 favourite for the Middle Park (24 entries). ARMOR is second best in despite his narrow defeat in the Flying Childers and the Irish have a strong entry headed by DR ZEMPF. I'll cover these more as the week progresses.
