Sheesh, Pole. Let me guess, you are one of the folk who wants more 'colour' on TV broadcasts of Racing - more human interest stories etc. Caroline's post was delightful.

No surprises.weather is quite bad here. Had my table booked with friends all ready to go. Love the figure 8 steeplechase, horses changing legs in the approach just a bit more tactical in the running than other chases imo.

  4. So the hill is going, and I know it's progress, but I don't have to be happy about it. Why doesn't the club give the hill one last hurrah and program a summer (depends when they start demolishing I guess) flat race two times over the hill - 4500m, flag start, highweight. I reckon it'd be a great spectacle - and yes, the field would be full of slugs and jumpers, but it'd be a great betting race!

  5. My goodness! that is severe and not sure how that will help anything . How are they supposed to improve without any experience?. Won't get any better just sitting on the sidelines. The young drivers need as many drives as possible , as each race they get just adds to improvement. Jim O'Sullivan's young son Sean, in Victoria , drove an incompetent race early in year when he first gained licence, so the stewards instead of banning/suspending him, sentenced him to 10 official trials , that he had to check off before resuming race driving. So there was no defined time limit on that. Not only did he gain race-track experience from this (even though not a tote race intensity, BUT Every bit helps) people at the trials gave him drives to help tick it off , so was meeting trainers and getting new horses to trial, and some invaluable experience. Then came back to raceday driving and drove his first winner recently ! excellent. Now that was a much better 'punishment ' for youngsters !!.. stewards were honest with the poor race drive initially , so banned from races, but sent him round more (at trials ) to improve.

  7. Champion trainer Laurie Laxon pictured in Singapore In 2008 Photo: Bruno Cannatelli Hall of Fame trainer Laurie Laxon passes away NZ Racing Desk 16 July 2021 Hall of Fame trainer Laurie Laxon, whose list of achievements included a Melbourne Cup victory and multiple Singapore training premierships, has passed away. Laxon had lived in retirement in the Coromandel seaside town of Whitianga since returning from Singapore in 2017, the year after his induction to the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. He had ruled supreme in Singapore training ranks after relocating there in 1999, claiming nine premierships and becoming the first to win 100 races in a season, and the first (and still only) trainer to reach 1,000 wins at Kranji on the way to a full tally in excess of 1,250. Laxon was born into racing as a member of a family involved since New Zealand’s earliest European settlement years. Growing up north of Hamilton, as a teenager he became an amateur rider and in his final raceday ride he won the Duke of Gloucester Cup. After completing a carpentry apprenticeship, he was drawn fully into racing when he established a stable near Ngaruawahia. From there he first made his mark with the 1974 Great Northern Hurdle winner Cobland, who he owned with his late wife Jenny, before establishing his credentials as the trainer of major flat performers. A big part of that early success was the association Laxon built with the brothers Philip and Peter Vela, leading to their joint maiden Group One success with the Sir Tristram filly Noble Heights in the 1981 New Zealand 1000 Guineas. Sir Tristram was also the source of the Laxon-trained, Vela-owned and bred Romanee Conti, winner of the 1993 Hong Kong International Cup, and dam of Ethereal, who was trained by Laxon’s second wife Sheila to win the 2001 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Sir Tristram also sired the Vela-owned and bred Riverina Charm, a four-time Group One winner on either side of the Tasman under Laxon’s training, while for owner-breeder Fred Bodle Laxon prepared the giant Sir Tristram mare Empire Rose to win the 1988 Melbourne Cup. “Laurie was an outstanding trainer and horseman who was particularly skilled with fillies and mares,” commented his close friend and near neighbour, New Zealand Bloodstock Chairman Joe Walls. “His astute horsemanship was noted by a number of successful breeders, most notably Peter and Philip Vela, and they had some great times together. “When Laurie went to Singapore he remained staunchly loyal to the New Zealand-bred and much of his success there was down to the horses he sourced from New Zealand,” added Walls, who confirmed that Laxon, who recently turned 75, passed away in his sleep overnight. Another to pay tribute to Laxon was highly respected former trainer Bruce Marsh, who developed a close friendship as a fellow Kiwi expat in Singapore. “Laurie was the instigator of me going up to Singapore,” said Marsh, who is now retired in Cambridge. “He was an immense help to every New Zealand and Australian expat who went up there – myself, Mark Walker, Cliffy Brown, Michael Freedman, all of us. “He went out of his way to show us the ins and outs, and he was always there if you needed any help. “Obviously Laurie was a top-notch trainer, he will always be remembered for his huge success back home, in Australia and up in Singapore.” As a New Zealand licence holder for close to 50 years Laxon also played a significant role through his involvement with the NZ Trainers’ Association, serving as National President prior to heading to Singapore. “A larger-than-life character Laurie made his mark on the racing industry as recognised by his admission into the Racing Hall of Fame,” NZTR CEO Bernard Saundry said. “NZTR’s Board and management acknowledge his immense contribution to the industry over the years and extend our thoughts to his family, as we mark the passing of a New Zealand racing legend.” Laxon is survived by his sons Craig, Roger and John, and daughter Lucy.

  11. A little history on the Laxon family settlers to New Zealand in the 1800's I understand that Laxon Terrace , Newmarket/ Remuera was named after the Laxon family. Laurie will be greatly missed for all his chats and knowledge on Racing. To the younger generation who are new to Racing, please stop and listen to what older folk have to say and share, their stories are important part of our Heritage. Laurie always made me feel welcome when I first started attending the races a number of years ago. Thanks for the memories. To his children, there's many more stories about your family tucked in this archive W.E & K Laxon were very involved in the Auckland & Waikato region, including Otahuhu and Mr Ferguson's Paddock at Whatawhata - does anyone know where this paddock is? It would be good if Racing got it's act together and established a plan and promoted visiting some of these older courses as part of a Tourist Trail - there must be remnants of our wider Horse Racing Heritage on some of these properties. 12. Laurie Laxon Not only was Laurie a great trainer, here, Aussie and Singapore he was also a great bloke. I first met Laurie when he trained Noble Heights to win the 1000 Guineas and I have often thought of the chat we had and the advice he gave me. To his family, our sincere condolences, racing has lost one of its most respected and greatest characters a real achiever who never overlooked any one

    Ellerslie Sale Plans

Interesting readers comments, very relevant about the License to Occupy for Retirement Village concept. Who stands to gain from that scam? Auckland is already overflowing with Retirement Villages that are unoccupied or have weather tightness issues as it is, those we know refuse to ever move into one of them and would far rather be carried out from their own home. Or is this to replace the sinking Retirement Village across Ladies Mile down in the gully where it should never have been built? The whole property market has changed from a decent sized property to crap. Who wants to see a complex of Tower Blocks up on our beloved Hill? Love the comment about Kenny Browne and his Ghost, may he come back to haunt those behind this short-sighted Quick Fix. Learn to live within a Budget those running the show or naf off. As an aside, Mitchelson, Hill and others, who must be turning in their graves at the thought of such desecration, ensured under the Domains Act 1800's future generations would have green open spaces for Recreation, go read it those involved and learn your History. Wake up folks, it's all very well for developers to say we need housing but the reality is, they also cost the Horse Racing industry a fortune when they demolished the old stands and built new ones, there's always a Consequence. What would Trevor McKee, Norm Holland and others think of this? RIVEERED - out of position at the start despite the efforts of driver O Thornley. A warning was placed on the barrier record of the gelding. Shifted inwards near the 900 metres making contact with the legs of AMERICAN OUTLAW which broke checking trailing runners. Junior driver O Thornley (assisted by J Cox) admitted driving carelessly in this incident and after viewing the films and hearing submissions on penalty the Adjudicative Committee suspended her licence from the conclusion of racing tonight up to and including 15 September 2021 (2 months). They certainly didn't miss her.2 months even though she pleaded guilty.

Could be an ok substance - you just can't give them on race day. No good speculating till all the facts are known.

I find it curious that you would expect them to be transferred to a South Island venue. 1 There was no South Island horse in either the Wellington Hurdles nor the Wellington Steeplechase. 2 The added cost to owners etc of transporting them South 3 The races need to be run asap as not to disrupt the racing programme of the horses. 4. The next South Island meeting is listed for Oamaru Sunday 25 July where don't have jumps racing. and the next SI meeting being 7 August the first day of the Grand National meeting. 5 By going to Hastings on Thursday this allows the races to be run asap and on a track most have jumped at previously. The transfer to Hastings on Thursday is a no brainer.

  24. Nine go in Sunday's Papin over 1200m at Chantilly where the ground is Soft. ATOMIC FORCE returns to the site of his Bois victory when he beat BLACK LIVES MATTER five lengths. Kevin Ryan trains this one and he has publicly complained about British prize money and supported French races - the Papin first prize is a respectable £66,000. HELLOMYDARLIN represents the successful freshman trainer George Boughey. However, her form doesn't look up to this - second in a small race last time. TIPPERARY SUNSET was with John Quinn in the north and won a couple of races but he's another whose owners have decided to look for better pots in France so he's now with Pascal Bary. The races he won in the UK were nothing special and he'll have to improve. The filly DIABLOTINE may be the most interesting of the locals - she's won her two provincial races by wide margins and was impressive last time at Vichy. At The Curragh, eight go in the Group 2 Minstrel for which ORDER OF AUSTRALIA looks a value 9/4 and favourite. Eight also in the Kilboy Estate over 1800m. A more interesting race - favourite and rightly so is CREATE BELIEF who created such a strong impression when winning the Sandringham at Ascot. If she can build on that, Group 2 will be well within her compass but the ground is a lot quicker. The British raider is ANGEL POWER and she improved last season ending up winning a Group 3 at Newmarket and following up in a Group 2 in Italy. She's been off nearly nine months but this is a logical first step for her 4-y-o campaign and this isn't the strongest Group 2 ever. I've often talked about following Group 1 form in lower level Group races and INSINUENDO brings a fourth in the Group 1 Pretty Polly to the table. That was her seasonal debut so she could come on a little from that - it was a decent effort on quick ground and I take her to prevail. I don't think I've mentioned the sad news reported during the Newmarket July meeting of the serious injury sustained by Gold Cup winner SUBJECTIVIST following his Ascot heroics. He has filling in one of his legs and it's quite possible we won't see him on a racecourse again - he's certainly out for the season and that has thrown the staying division back into the air. STRADIVARIUS, a well held fourth in the Gold Cup, has been installed as 13/8 favourite for the Goodwood Cup on July 27th. Before that, LOVE is currently 9/4 favourite for the King George at Ascot next Saturday with ADAYAR at 7/2, MISHRIFF and PYLEDRIVER at 8s and HURRICANE LANE at 10s with LONE EAGLE and SNOWFALL.

Hardly severe considering how many drives she gets or would get after that performance. Mind you I also feel that Ben Hopes was just as much at fault - either control the horse or give it it's head before it chokes down.

Harsh is right, there are 40 senior drivers who have driven more horses this season than Olivia has driven in her career I wonder if they would be treated the same also i think the leader should have said the front is not there.
