    Prize money annoucement

Agreed WD and also the $500k handout from NZTR to the Karaka Millions needs to cease. This scheme is run by a private company headed by one of NZ's richest. He fully deserves to be in The Racing Hall Of Fame as he has heavily supported NZ Racing and done well out it. However, as a private enterprise scheme it should stand on its own feet and not be propped up to the tune of $500k when the industry is struggling.

  2. You will note Tas, that I am not one of those who is always advocating for the nice to have things, and massive stakes increases. I seem to be one of the few who looks at turnover figures (or tries to) and thinks how the hell can we even afford what we already have? I do though think the industry is poorly run and our resources aren't used in the most efficient fashion. I also think some people have done really well out of the current situation. There are horses getting group1 placings in $200,000 races who would never be competitive in Group 1s in Aussie, or even in $200,000 races; and this gets proven over and over again when they do try their luck in Aussie. I am also surprised that the number of group races haven't been reduced as the total number of races being run keeps plummeting. Bizarrely, as the quality of NZ Racing keeps declining the number of group races keeps increasing, certainly as a % of total races. 21 group 2s in 2014/15 and 27 in 2020/21. 39 group 3s in 14/15 and 43 in 20/21. Reducing that number would be a realistic way to save a few dollars.

  6. Interesting horse , Gosden then he moved to France .Rated 100 in UK on back of that good July Stakes run . Half brother 103 , middle to upper tier sprint handicapper now , ran the other day called Lahore . First race at Ripon last night Frankel got another winner as broodmare sire , 3 out of 6 to run have won , and only one hasn't placed and that one only had 1 run. Those six had about 10 runs in total only so strike rate looks good . Destinado iam watching in sales this week.

  7. If I had the money I would look at a Frankel colt in the Tattersalls July sale this week. Seventh Kingdom. Buy it and send it to Chris Waller (or one of the other Kiwi trainers in Aussie) and hopefully they could teach him to start a lot better, for a start. Good pedigree and good potential as long as are not selling because they think he needs gelding. Oh well dreams are free !!

    Forbury Finale

Just saw this - a very gpod idea Familiar voices will ring out for the last time on Thursday night. Recent regular caller Justin Evans has stepped aside to allow a line-up of former Forbury Park commentators to say goodbye to the track. Jason Teaz, Kevin Payne and Craig Rail will grace the commentator’s box. The TAB is also testing technology to enable Tom Wood to be able to commentate a race from Hong Kong.

  9. So succinct which is why NZ racing is so dysfunctional. Everybody wants to have things done their way which is obviously an impossible situation. I made a post earlier about the need for collaboration with NZTAB for the betterment of all codes and stakeholders. Its unlikely to happen but it should be the number 1 priority as the current system has resulted in poor outcomes. eg Insolvency

  10. Yes, $30m provided by Shane, but the other $15m+ by the clubs. I'm still struggling with how Riccarton can be described as being in the Provinces. With such a valuable asset it would be sad if winter stakes drop. Unfortunately NZTR haven't been very clear about what that part of their announcement means.

  11. Looking down the week, Friday's card at Newmarket features the Group 1 Falmouth for the fillies and mares over 1600m. 17 have been entered with ten 3-y-o taking on seven older fillies and mares. The Group 1 form of the Coronation at Ascot gets an airing with winner ALCOHOL FREE, second SKY LANTERN and third (and of course 1000 Guineas winner) MOTHER EARTH all in the mix. ALCOHOL FREE is 3/1 favourite having splashed through the wet Ascot turf so strongly - the ground at Newmarket remains Good to Firm but rain is forecast. The 3-y-o looks to be dominant with the best of the older fillies the Duke of Cambridge runner up LADY BOWTHORPE. The supporting Group 2 is the Duchess of Cambridge for the juvenile fillies over 1200m. This time it's the Albany form which gets a run-out with winner SANDRINE favoured over HELLO YOU and third placed OSCULA. That was on heavy ground so with very different conditions we could get a very different result. Saturday is a busy day up here with big cards at Ascot, Chester, York and of course Newmarket where the Group 1 feature, the July Cup, over 1200m, has drawn and entry of 23. Favourite is King's Stand winner OXTED but there's plenty of quality in opposition. Finally, Sunday's feature at Deauville is the Jean Prat over 1400m - note the change in distance which has been in place since 2019. Every time I say there's no Group 1 for the older horses apart from the Foret, just remind me there's the Jean Prat for the 3-y-o.

  12. As has already been said, a tremendous weekend for Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore after what was, by some measures, a disappointing Royal Ascot. Saturday then at Sandown and the first big factor was the lack of overnight rain but the jockeys were still of the view the course was on the slow side and they came middle to stands side which is the preferred slow/wet ground route on the slopes. I thought Tom Marquand was caught between a rock and a hard place on ADDEYBB - go too quick and set it up for the proven 2400m horse MISHRIFF, go too slow and set it up for the proven speed horse in ST MARK'S BASILICA. David Egan went with ADDEYBB to keep him honest but the pace was pedestrian and in the end that worked well for Ryan Moore who got a superb tow into the race off the home turn. MISHRIFF looked to be travelling the rest 400m down but emptied tamely I thought allowing ADDEYBB to rally for second but neither had any answers to ST MARK'S BASILICA who had been strongly backed through the morning from 7/4 to a shade of odds on and cleared away to win comfortably by three and a half lengths. This was an excellent performance by the 3-y-o, for all he was getting 10 lbs from the older horses. He's now won the Dewhurst (as a juvenile), the Poulains, the Jockey Club and the Eclipse so you could argue he's the best 3-y-o out there. I suspect fans of POETIC FLARE may disagree and we may yet get a huge opportunity for a vicarious comparison IF the older PALACE PIER does battle with POETIC FLARE at Goodwood and then steps up to 2000m to take on ST MARK'S BASILICA at either York or Leopardstown. I'd love ST MARK'S BASILICA to have a tilt at the Cox Plate but suspect that won't happen. The problem is, he was found out on Good ground as a juvenile and I just wonder how keen "the lads" will be to run him on anything quick - that means a race like the Champion Stakes in the autumn might be on the agenda. ADDEYBB did little wrong in defeat and time may tell he faced an impossible task giving 10 lbs to ST MARK'S BASILICA. He rallied well and if the ground is slow enough he will be in all the top autumn races. MISHRIFF disappointed me a notch - perhaps the long lay off didn't help but he was well held in the final 200m. He might improve for some quicker ground and the 2400m option is there. Both the second and third might turn up in the King George at the end of the month but that will surely depend on the ground. Up at Haydock, the ground turned Soft after heavy morning rain and that helped ALPINISTA who did it nicely in the Lancashire Oaks suggesting, perhsps, the winner excepted, the Oaks form may not amount to too much. The 3-y-o outsider LADY HAYES was second but she's only rated 95. On to yesterday and a top card at Saint-Cloud where the ground was Soft for the Grand Prix over 2380m. BROOME made every yard for a Group 1 double for Aidan O'Brien. To be fair, I thought Colin Keane was gifted an easy on the front end but that can happen in France where they tend to go slow and then quicken late. BROOME had enough to hold them in the sprint and the fact they ran the best time of the card by some way tells me this was a strong performance. EBAIYRA kept on well for second without yet convincing me she's worth more than a place in the Arc field. It didn't happen for IN SWOOP on whom I thought Peslier never looked comfortable and the favourite finished fourth, just behind GOLD SHIP. BROOME has had a busy season and paid a huge compliment to both the Hardwicke winner, WONDERFUL TONIGHT, who is clearly a class act and HELVIC DREAM, the Tattersalls Gold Cup winner who might yet take on ST MARK'S BASILICA at York.

  13. How do you suggest funding the doubling of stakes? We aren't given access to turnover figures anymore, but at a guess I would suggest on course turnovers are probably 25% of what they were 35 years ago, and off course turnover is probably about 35% of what it was 35 years ago. Add to that, there are no significant sponsors anymore. At the same time the costs of running the industry have escalated massively. Racing used to be run by racing people who had a passion for the industry, these days it is bogged down by overpaid cast-offs from other industries and other countries who are only here for their inflated salaries.

  14. Again , it's not about you , it's not about me , trust me when I tell you I've had the shit ripped out of me in rough jobs , for many many years since I was 15 . Face to face mates having a laugh, some blokes nasty, some funny , this is not that , it's National TV . I love having the shit ripped out of me , I love giving it by the barrel load as it helps when under stressful situations , but you have to cater for the audience, we can all say I don't mind this and that but trackside has many varied viewers and racing has an image it needs to protect . Precious, love it . Cheers .

  15. Step in the right direction but minimum stakes need to be even higher. Why can't the new stakes be introduced on August 1 rather than August 22?

  19. On to Saturday and just four stand in the Eclipse over 2000m at Sandown. The ground has improved to Good to Soft, Good in places on the round course and I just wonder if it's going to be slow enough for ADDEYBB and ST MARK'S BASILICA. MISHRIFF is, as we know, a class act and you'd fancy him to beat these on anywhere near decent ground. EL DRAMA won the Dee at Chester and is no mug but he's rated 109 and he's up against three rated in the 120s. Nine go in the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks at Haydock where the ground is Good. The 4-y-o ALPINISTA is clear on ratings and 7/4 looks decent value. MYSTERY ANGEL gets the 12 lbs weight for age and has chased home SNOWFALL the last twice. Normally, the Oaks runner up would have a big chance in this race but the crushing superiority of SNOWFALL at Epsom - she won by 16 lengths - leaves a few question. Is SNOWFALL that good or did she beat trees? Ten have been declared for the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud on Sunday - the ground in Paris is Heavy. IN SWOOP and EBAIYRA look the best of the locals - Aidan O'Brien has declared BROOME, SERPENTINE and JAPAN but I suspect they won't all run and the final forfeit is tomorrow lunchtime (local).
