I say bring back Andre. After all the business is more about was it was when he was originally there. In fact Andre could teach them a thing or two on how to run a successful TAB/Trackside on a shoestring.

  3. Former top trainer and NZ Hall of Famer Jim Gibbs was back in winners circle today at his his current passion Harness Racing. He won the 4yr old Group 1 Jewels event with South Coast Arden which he co-owns. 60 years ago Jim won the McGregor Grant Steeples at Ellerslie 3 x times as a jumps jockey. A life with horses and still going strong. The McGregor Grant Steeples will be run tomorrow for possibly the last time at Ellerslie.

    Jacinda Ardern

This Government promised to be open and transparent, but it is an artfully-crafted mirage. By Andrea Vance From the moment she took office in 2017, Jacinda Ardern promised her government would be the most open and transparent New Zealand has seen. In her first formal speech to Parliament she pledged: “This government will foster a more open and democratic society. It will strengthen transparency around official information.” Since then the numbers of faceless communications specialists have skyrocketed. The Government’s iron grip on the control of information has tightened. And it is now harder than ever to get information. This year, I have made more complaints to the Ombudsman than in any previous year. So far, every one has been upheld. In my 20-year plus time as a journalist, this Government is one of the most thin-skinned and secretive I have experienced. Many of my colleagues say the same. Even squeezing basic facts out of an agency is a frustrating, torturous and often futile exercise. Take the last week. Two senior Stuff journalists attempted to interview Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta, at a time when the China-Australia-New-Zealand relationship is under intense international scrutiny. It didn’t happen. Not because of any geo-political sensitivities. Nor something as trivial as a diary clash. The paranoid and hyper-sensitive minister objected to taking questions from two journalists at once. In the same week, Mahuta released detailed reports on the country’s creaking drinking, waste and stormwater infrastructure. They paint a dire picture and the issue needs urgent public debate. Yet Mahuta refused to answer detailed questions about proposed changes. She opted to give just one interview – cherry-picking a reporter from TVNZ. A coup for the statebroadcaster, but a serious blow to accountability. I fought my own battle. In early February I requested information about Le Lapérouse, a cruise ship refused entry to New Zealand. I wanted to understand more about a decision which cost the country millions of dollars, particularly as the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) had previously refused to answer my questions. Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi opted instead to call a short-notice press conference – to which I was deliberately not invited. They didn’t like the questions, and wanted to get ahead of Stuff’s story, to shape the narrative. This cynical and obstructive behaviour was made all the worse because Faafoi himself is a former journalist. My OIA request – which by law should be answered within 20 working days – was delayed, and eventually took five times that length. The Ombudsman agreed the hold-up was unacceptable, and I got an apology. It made no difference – MBIE still delivered the information on Wednesday, the date it had originally chosen. I understand why they were obstructive. Hundreds of pages of emails reveal muddled, confused and dogmatic officials under pressure to justify a controversial decision. But much of the crucial information still appears to be redacted. It’s now very difficult for journalists to get to the heart and the truth of a story. We are up against an army of well-paid spin doctors. Since the current Government took office, the number of communications specialists have ballooned. Each minister has at least two press secretaries. (Ardern has four). In the year Labour took office, the Ministry for the Environment had 10 PR staff. They now have 18. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade more than doubled their staff – up to 25. MBIE blew out from 48 staff to 64. None of those five dozen specialists could give me those figures for many weeks – and again I was forced to ask the Ombudsman to intervene. The super ministry – and its colleagues uptown at the Health Ministry – are notorious for stymieing even the simplest requests. Health’s information gatekeepers are so allergic to journalists they refuse to take phone calls, responding only (and sporadically) to emails. But it is the New Zealand Transport Agency that take the cake: employing a staggering 72 staff to keep its message, if not its road-building, on track – up from 26 over five years. At every level, the Government manipulates the flow of information. It has not delivered on promises to fix the broken, and politically influenced OIA system. It also keeps journalists distracted and over-burdened with a rolling maul of press conferences and announcements, which are often meaningless or repetitive and prevent sustained or detailed questioning. In this age of live-streaming and blogging, organisations often feel obliged to cover every stage-managed utterance for fear of missing out. And the prime minister’s office makes sure their audience is captured, starting the week and cementing the agenda with a conference call with political editors. Perhaps the trials and tribulations of the nation’s journalists do not concern you. Why should you care? Because the public’s impression of this government is the very opposite. They see a prime minister that has captivated the world with her ‘authentic’ communication style, intimate social media postings, daily Covid briefings and proactive releases of Cabinet papers. It is an artfully-crafted mirage, because the reality is very different. This is a Government that is only generous with the information that it chooses to share.

Exactly. I watch less NZ racing now that they have no before or after race interviews, it’s taken the human element out of it and the product they are putting out is very dull.

Blair Drove Krug a treat. How it didn't win was a mystery. still It was a great front running drive by Ben Butcher . Natalie made up for the Amazing Dream miss with a couple of Jewel's wins later in day ok. South Coast Arden made a real mess of them. 10/10 point drive Nat. Mark Purdon 2, John Dunn 2, Tony Herlihy 2 wins as well , so all the big guns bringing their A game. Was great racing and congrats to all the winners.

    At last

It looks the Aussie media have had enough. Last 3 times the Vic Health guys were announcing new restrictions, all about the NEW Indian (with a touch of Nepal) virus and how rapidly it spread and how DEADLY this strain was, they were just got absolutely GRILLED by two or three journos, who asked all the right questions, Like how fast and how deadly was it. The stunned look on the last 2 Health officials was funny az Also on the sky news oz, they had a lady on (name coming), who delivered the perfect action to last years bullshite. And also one of their (Sky oz) young frontmen, continually opens with the statement, "Is it not time to accept the virus is here and move on ? "

  9. He is not even the best older horse here. There are half a dozen better than him. The Walner's are starting to run at the qualifiers. 4 of them won today at Meadowlands. They are all machines. Walner was a champion who was getting ready for the Hambletonian. He had already trotter 1.50.1 on his ear. He had a minor suspensory problem so they retired him. They sold at the yearling sales last year for huge prices. One of them trotted his last quarter in 27 flat the first ever run. We know what a great sire Muscle Hill is but the word is these are better with a flawless gait. Amour Angus revolutionized the breed over here with her sons Conway Hall, Angus Hall and Andover Hall and all 3 of them have left multiple sons who are great sires. You have Majestic Son down there but up here you have The Conway Hall line which is his son Windsong's Legacy who won the triple crown and died in his paddock of a ruptured aorta but not before he left Chapter Seven who left dozens of champions including Walner. Linda Toscano trained Chapter Seven who won over 2 million and said that Walner was much faster and bigger than his dad. Shit, I wish I had the money as they are trotting machines. Anyway, Andover Hall, Conway Hall and Angus Hall along with Andover Hall's sons Donato Hanover and Swan for All are leaving many top females and many of the big winners are out of Andover Hall or Donato Hanover mares If you art a breeder, you cannot go wrong if you have mares by Andover Hall and that line. So go out and buy what you can and breed them and keep the fillies as they are golden

  10. $10k races are for maidens/non-winners. Overall there are 98 jumps races planned over 31 meetings.Ellerslie holds four of those meetings. There are 10 meetings considered Premier where the main steeples and hurdlers race for min $50 k. Ellerslie holds 3 of those meetings including the Great Northern meeting in Sept where the two big races are $125k each . Two steeples races per day means 8 races go over the hill all year. Today the weather is like the current Aussie cricket team....and their rugby teams etc etc......BLEAK. Constant drizzle will mean track very heavy and folk attending will be less than the staff there. So jumps lovers need to BET heavily on Jumps races to sustain them and the few trainers and riders who prepare the horses ! A lot of us love the the jumps ,but few go to watch and fewer bet on them. But only bet money you can afford to lose so bet with your shoelaces not your shoes

  14. The first day of the Derby Festival at Epsom took place on an overcast and wet afternoon at Epsom. A forecast 1-2 mm of rain ended up at 11mm of rain and while the Clerk of the Course, Andrew Cooper, held the ground at Good, Good to Firm in places before racing, it was obvious after the first the rain had got in and the going was changed to Good to Soft. It’s not of course the first time it’s rained on Oaks Day – it seems to with monotonous regularity. The Coronation Cup over 2400m is in effect the Derby/Oaks for the older horses – it’s a key part of the middle-distance pattern and is the only part for the older horses (like the Lockinge for the milers) as the next stage is the King George at Ascot leading on to the Arc. With ALPINISTA a late scratching, six went to post and the favourite was the easy Newbury winner AL AASY, but he placed a strong Ballydoyle challenge from the brothers JAPAN and MOGUL. In the end, they all had to give best to PYLEDRIVER who basically out-battled AL AASY in the final 350m. The winner had won the King Edward VII and the Dante last season, but it had all gone wrong in the Derby when he had got badly hampered at the top of the hill. PYLEDRIVER is trained by William Muir and was ridden by Martin Dwyer, Muir’s son-in-law and they aren’t, I suspect they would both admit, in the Premier league any more but this was a wonderful win for the “smaller” stable and for Dwyer, he joins that select club of jockeys who have won the Derby, Oaks and Coronation Cup though SIR PERCY was in 2006 and CASUAL LOOK in 2003. He’s in the Hardwicke at Ascot but connections may feel they should have a tilt at the King George. AL AASY didn’t travel into the race as well as at Newbury but that was probably a weak Group 3, and his limitations were exposed for all he ran a perfectly good race in defeat. I think he’s a “bridle” horse and I thought PYLEDRIVER did him for heart in the final 300m. JAPAN was beaten a further seven lengths in third while MOGUL clearly hated the ground and trailed home a long last. Just to remind you all, this is what I said about the Oaks last week: 14 stand in the Oaks -the only scratching was NOON STAR. I fancy SNOWFALL and I'm on SAFFRON BEACH each way at 12s. With the softening ground, the runners in the following handicap headed for the stands side and in the pre-race betting for the Oaks, SANTA BARBARA was weak while support came for the Cheshire Oaks first and second, DUBAI FOUNTAIN and ZEYEEDAH. As for SNOWFALL, I thought she'd relish the ground and backed her at 6s in the morning. The story of the race (and I’d really recommend you watch the link below if you can’t find it elsewhere) is MYSTERY ANGEL set the running, but Frankie Dettori always looked happy on SNOWFALL and cruised up to lead 450m out and from there the race was over. SNOWFALL came home an incredible 16 lengths clear – the time was very slow – 2:42.67 – reflecting the ground was probably genuinely soft. It was of course visually hugely impressive but I’m slightly cautious. The pacemaker MYSTERY ANGEL finished second and it may just be the winner was flattered by being the only proven stayer in a field of fillies, many of whom didn’t get home and others hated the ground. It seems Aidan O’Brien is thinking of the Irish Oaks rather than the King George and the route to the Arc via the Yorkshire Oaks has been well travelled by some very good fillies of late. SNOWFALL had been impressive in the Musidora at York and let’s not forget she is bred in the purple – by Deep Impact out of Best in the World (her first foal). Best in the World is a full to FOUND and oddly enough the third in this year’s Oaks, DIVINELY so the niece beat home the aunt (so to speak). We all know how good FOUND turned out so SNOWFALL could be a real champion. As for the others, MYSTERY ANGEL ran a huge race for exciting new trainer George Boughey and DIVINELY ran a decent race in third. SAVE A FOREST was the best of the Varian trio in fourth and she didn’t have the best of runs – I hope they bring her out in the Ribblesdale – while SANTA BARBARA finished fifth. She was held up out the back to get the trip by Ryan Moore but whether it was the trip or the ground she never got anywhere near the winner. I had a little hope for SAFFRON BEACH on the home turn but in truth she didn’t see out the 2400m. Frankie Dettori said after the race he thought they had gone hard early – I’m not sure – the sectionals showed, as often happens at Epsom, they went hard up the hill and then steadied at the top of the hill and down into Tattenham Corner. I made money on the race thanks to Frankie and SNOWFALL but I'm to be convinced we've seen a champion. Excellent article Andrea Vance, thanks @rdytdy We would like all journalists to ask Miss Ardwen & Director General of Health, Ashley Bloomfield why they knowingly & intentionally mislead the people of New Zealand with telling us all in March 2020, that it was only going to be a 2 week lockdown for a "virus" that started in China. Why the lies when it's been clear all along what the motive is, that of Bill Gates 10 yr vaccine program. Lie, after lie after all is all this current government & it's political advisors have spun.

    Let Battle Commence

A bit of gray day Lloyd but rain was quite brief at Jewels and not much of a hindrance ! Bookies probably happy overall , but no winners outside first 4 x favourites and 2 of first 4 favs finished in top3 in 8 races. For the smaller guy ,there were some nice divvies overall....2nd favs paid well and exotic divies were quite tasty. An excellent days racing IMO. They did ask where you were at one stage and many folk were running around looking for you....your usual seat/table was sold for good money for sit down table service dining !

A Sea the Stars gelding , his form stacking up pretty well . Appleby has a couple of lightly raced 3 year old geldings who look very handy, the other won on debut last week at Yarmouth .
