There are some 'shorties' this year for sure . Amazing Dream, Akuta, Bettor Twist, 5 wisemen, Krug all racking up very impressive records. very hard to beat any of them. Perhaps the Trotting jewels 2 and 4 year olds events could go to the very impressive last start winners Mystic Max and Muscle Mountain ? . Kango should lead the last race so Bad to the Bone without cover maybe? a huge task but by far the race full of the most chances. Copy That will need an exceptional drive from that barrier too, over the short distance. best of luck to all invested in the great days racing.2 points -

Hardly- Just look at the results since HC took over, superb UDR and stakes won looks impressive. I'm gonna speculate here but id say that post Jewels Mark and Nat will not be seen for quite some time on the track. Holiday time .2 points -
Very interesting piece about UK prize money compared to other racing jurisdictions: https://www.racingpost.com/news/insight/prize-money-how-do-other-nations-fund-such-bigger-pots-than-britain/491643 It's worth some discussion I think and perhaps where NZ compares to other countries. This is the graphic that tells the story:1 point

Draws affects many hotpots in the Jewels

Think Ashburton should hold " the lost jewels" (2020) sometime late Nov / early December. Either half the usual prize-money or a little under that. It would be for those horses that missed those (2020) jewels .1 point -

I would say HC is paying the bills if that's a clue. After Jewels i suspect the HC team will either go out for a spell or be sent to Ozzie carnivals so no real need for local stable driver but Cox /Thornley would be ok as they have been endorsed by previous trainers. Just my thoughts.1 point -

Thanks.....pretty much sums up what the 'experts' said on Boxseat last night ,along with those who set the TAB markets. Hard to disagree , but at least one 'hottie' will surely strike bad luck while I've seen the odd young trotter be put off by the big occasion and excitement. At the last Cambridge event I remember over half the field broke in one trotting event while at Addington 2 yrs ago there were a couple of false start shambles and several breakers though the very wet day probably contributed as well.1 point -
Tilsit was only just nosed out in final stride at Longchamp on Sunday , closely related to Kingman . Not a day goes by in UK and Ire without a Juddmonte bred stallion getting a win somewhere . They were all over the show the other day from 3 mile hurdles to 5 furlong sprints . That exciting chaser of Skeltons Allmankind goes back to the family mentioned above by John Clydesdale , goes back to Bahamian .1 point

James Dellahook was probably the cornerstone of the Prince's success. He really knew his stuff and the foundation mares he bought keep cropping up. Incidentally, the problem with Dalakhani was that is progeny had very patchy breathing ability. Made many a vet a happy person1 point

Yes, as @Tauhei Nottshas observed, the Oaks and Derby are at hand and they dominate the racing week up here. The two day Derby Meeting (sponsored by Cazoo, not Kazoo) begins on Friday and the ground currently is Good, Good to Firm in places. As you might expect at this time of year, a few warm sunny days have dried the ground considerably after the deluges of early and mid May. I'm a bit of a heretic and I actually prefer the Friday card with the Oaks and the Coronation Cup to the Derby card which isn't that much apart from the big race. All three races are over the classic and unique 2400m. 11 have been entered for the Coronation Cup for which AL AASY is 8/11 favourite after his saunter at Newbury the other day. That was Group 3 and this is Group 1 and while he's rated 119 he has to prove it at the highest level and 8/11 is more a reflection of potential than actual performance. Incredibly, LOVE is 10/3 - last year she won the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks and might have won the Arc as well - we'll never know. She was the top 3-y-o middle distance horse, we know she goes well fresh, we know she loves the track and yet she's 10/3 and an unproven Group 3 winner is 8/11. The risk is I don't know if this is where Aidan O'Brien will want to start her but the drying ground is a help. Second favourite is JAPAN who beat TRUESHAN at Chester over 2600m. He's mixed it with some very good horses in his career and while he won the Grand Prix de Paris as a 3-y-o, he's just come up short against the likes of GHAIYYATH, WALDGEIST, ENABLE and ADDEYBB (arguably that's no disgrace). PYLEDRIVER. BROOME and MOGUL are all solid Group 2 performers and while MOGUL won the 2020 Grand Prix de Paris, they've all got it to prove at the highest level. The fascinating runner is IN SWOOP who was of course second to MOGUL in the aforementioned Grand Prix de Paris but improved further to chase home SOTTSASS in the Arc. He was just beaten by SUBLIMIS on seasonal debut but won the Hedouville well enough last time. I'm looking forward to seeing him on some decent ground. As always, this is a quality race and I'll consider it further later in the week. The Oaks has 15 entries. Favourite is 1000 Guineas fourth SANTA BARBARA but I'm not convinced she has the temperament for Epsom. She shifted left under pressure at Newmarket and doing that at Epsom won't end well. I'm more interested in her stable companion SNOWFALL who was a convincing winner of the Musidora - the extra 400m will be ideal and she'll go close. TEONA was well held in third and I can't see that form being reversed. DUBAI FOUNTAIN beat ZEYEEDAH in the Cheshire Oaks but a lot of people fancy the second to reverse the places. Perhaps but I'd be surprised if either were good enough. It's often said the best trial for the Derby is the 2000 Guineas so you'd have to say the best trial for the Oaks would be the 1000 Guineas. I've backed 1000 Guineas runner up SAFFRON BEACH at 12s which looks a screaming each way price. She was finishing well and while on breeding the 2400m might be an issue her style of racing suggests she'll be strong at the end of this race. The others are for the most part reasonable Listed class fillies but should have no chance at this level. It looks like a large field for the Derby on Saturday - close to the maximum 20 runners. BOLSHOI BALLET remains 13/8 favourite and I'll talk more about the race tomorrow when the 5-day entries come through.1 point

Are you still contributing to this thread Heninz? Genuine question--What is Ardern doing trying to hongi with Morrison? Surely a blatant example of racial/cultural appropriation as neither of them identify as Maori. No outrage from the Left/Dark side. Similarly no outrage about white fullas and chicks participating in that out-dated war dance.1 point

Racism?

Heninz, you have chosen to bring this topic onto this forum for god only knows what reason, so here is one man's opinion with a couple of ideas for you to consider. Firstly, if you are taking offense at overhearing a private conversation between two people you don't even know, who just happen to disagree with your political or philosophical views, that is entirely your problem not theirs. Secondly Whanau Ora seems to be an idea/policy being pushed/supported by the current government which is seen by many as favouring one sector of society over others, so you are going to get some push back from many typical kiwis, as it is a change from the status quo that not all favour. You have no divine right to being deemed to own the correct opinion on all matters. It doesn't matter how many people in your orbit may have been "disgusted" (your words), those guys still have a right to hold a private conversation and frankly I find your view and reaction arrogant, and wonder why you have signed to this forum to bring up this crap. This is not racing related in any way. Just saying - (sorry Leigh).1 point
