  1. Good to see Chris' accomplishments are recognised via a nomination for Canterbury's Outstanding Sportsman of the Year. He is up against Codie Taylor and Paul Coll. We will find out on Friday night. Tough competition, but fingers crossed.

  3. It was always a case of him leaving to pursue his own career outside of current set up. Blair and Greg Payne did the same in recent times. Will no doubt get more drives from Dunn stable and slowly build up numbers. Good luck to him

  4. I dont think the odds are relevant at all in this case ,I think the real sticking point is from the moment the bet was placed what was the response from the bookies and what was the timeline? ,how long until the final whistle on the final game?,how many minutes( we get 60 seconds) until they cancelled the bet?,was the punter offered a cash out option? A line needs to be drawn for the benefit of all. This stinks to high heaven

    McNab Day

What a day at Hastings with 4 different McNab riders riding a winner wonder if Skelton brothers ever had 4 in a day individually.

  7. So how good was that Zaaki performance? I’ll let the respected form analysts speak for what Zaaki did and accept the Might And Power like comparisons to underline it. Daniel O’Sullivan’s respected numbers put Zaaki’s effort into elite company alongside the best of Winx, Hartnell in a Turnbull Stakes and the often-forgotten Francis Of Assisi in its 10 length win of the 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington while he has also rated above the last two Cox Plate winning performances of Sir Dragonet and Ly’s Gracieux. The time, too, was impressive. With an eased-down Zaaki stopping the clock at 2.01.06 for1 1/4 miles, the fastest time since the race was first run over this trip in 2012, and just a whisker away from the course record of 2.00.96, which he no doubt would have claimed had he been ridden out to the line.

  8. Rubbish! Its an acknowledgement of the poor owner who pays $500 float fees once twice or a more a month, $200 to the farrier etc etc etc. But you'd have that poor owner fork out another $200 for the ride you couldn't even give them that and I'm guessing in your world everyone should be paying for noms and acceptances as well just to put the show on. The fact is you refuse to acknowledge the real issue in NZracing which is prizemoney levels all together, whether you add in your $200 starters fee to the top 5 in prizemoney or if the winner alone was racing for the entire $10k the prizemoney levels are still far from adequate but you choose to focus on a measly amount of prizemoney being paid to participants instead. I notice at Caulfield this Saturday they pay down to 10th are you telling me they have got that wrong and it should be all propping up the top 5? No you won't because their prizemoney levels are more than adequate thats why you wouldn't question that. The function of the starters payment is indeed a very good thing, perhaps the distribution and the process around it needs to be looked at (especially on feature days) .

  9. As much as I admire Allstars and their horses I have felt that Tim seemed to get shafted time and time again. He was getting the 3rd favoured drive in most races and as soon as these horses showed potential he lost the drive, e.g. Have Faith in Me - Won at least two of the biggest 3yr old races but when he went to Aussie he loses the drive, Ultimate Machete huge 3rd in Jewels when 3rd choice of drives in the race - never to get the drive again, Better Twist regular driver winning big races and then suddenly Nat takes over Yes it is their choice but loyalty doesn't seem to count for much

  10. Not really 'Shafted' as such. He did just drive AKUTA to a $200,000 feature race win 2 weeks ago. I'm sure he's very happy with the drives he gets. When you have Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen , 2 of the best trainers/ drivers the planet has ever seen , available. 'everyone' else is THIRD STRING for drives. Fabulous for the stable junior Olivia to get a First string the other night, while Nat at Addington. 'Amazing Dream' a dream drive for the young lass in Auckland Blair Orange patiently drove the THIRD STRING quite often , and came up with the most massive reward . which was The NZ CUP 2019 with Cruz Bromac. Not a bad third string at all. Doubt if Blair considered himself shafted either. Blair and Tim honoured to be driving such fantastic horses.

  11. Back to last weekend and a chance to catch up on the main UK and Irish races. At Haydock, the ground was Heavy for the two Group 2 sprint races, the Sandy Lane for the 3-y-o, a trial for the Commonwealth Cup and the Temple for the older horses, a trial for the King's Stand. As it's unlikely Ascot will be run on ground as deep as it was at Haydock, it may be these races won't have the significance they have enjoyed in previous years. The Sandy lane looked wide open and with 33/1 shot ROHAAN prevailing, you'd be forgive for thinking the sprinting 3-y-o aren't much. I did think both the second, DRAGON SYMBOL and the third, UMM KULTHUN, ran well and both will, I suspect, fetch up to Berkshire for what is always an interesting race. The 1000m Temple saw a gutsy front running performance from LIBERTY BEACH who has solid form on slow ground including third places in both the Kin's Stand and the Abbaye. If it comes up Soft at Ascot she has serious claims. The main focus of the weekend was on The Curragh in Ireland where the Saturday card had to survive a morning inspection and the ground was Soft to Heavy. The 2000 Guineas looked a wide open race and pitched the English 2000 Guineas winner and Poulains sixth POETIC FLARE against Newmarket third LUCKY VEGA and also-rans WEMBLEY and VAN GOGH as well as Craven runner up LA BARROSSA and last year's Vertem Futurity winner MAC SWINEY. It looked like it was going to be a war of attrition race on the ground and so it proved MAC SWINEY made almost all and he had a tremendous battle with his stable companion and fellow home bred POETIC FLARE in the final 350m just holding on by a diminishing short head. VAN GOGH was third but beaten three and a half lengths with LUCKY VEGA fourth. WEMBLEY was a huge flop coming home last - I could forgive him Newmarket on account of the ground but he should have gone better on this surface. LA BAROSSA was sixth and after his fine second in the Craven, you can perhaps put the ground up as an excuse but I'll be looking for something much better on decent ground next time. LUCKY VEGA would, I thought, struggle with the trip on this ground and he got well back but then ran on very well in the final 300m to finish fourth. Given where others were running, he might ot have been on the best part of the track through halfway but you couldn't argue he didn't see out the 1600m. I backed VAN GOGH each way at 10s and he went off 9/2. He travelled into the race well but got outpaced by the front two in the final 300m but still put in a solid effort on the ground and I can't argue he made me a nice profit on the bet. POETIC FLARE was running his third classic in four weeks and he comes out with one win, one close second and a sixth. Jim Bolger said he didn't have a race in Paris and came back heavier than when he left. Whether he'll again cross swords with Poulains winner ST MARK'S BASILICA in the St James's Palace is impossible to know but he'll be a big fancy if he turns up at Ascot and has clear claims to being the top 3-y-o colt miler at this time. MAC SWINEY had shown plenty of stamina as a juvenile winning the Vertem at Doncaster but he'd been a shade disappointing behind BOLSHOI BALLET on his 3-y-o debut. This was a strong performance and he now goes to Epsom as a 5/1 third favourite but you'd be wary of drying ground as all his form is on slow turf. In any case, it's a hard ask to see him reversing places with BOLSHOI BALLET after the latter's impressive performance last time. The supporting Group 2 Greenlands over 1200m went to 14/1 shot GUSTAVUS WESTON while the Lanwades went to EPONA PLAYS who won well with favourite CHAMPERS ELYSSES disappointing into fourth. I wonder if the winner will run in a place like the Windsor Castle at Ascot. On to Sunday and further rain turned the ground Heavy. Two Group 1 races, the first being the Tattersalls Gold Cup over 2000m. Three dominated the finish with the others well beaten off. BROOME was at the sharp end throughout but never looked wholly at ease and was run down close home by HELVIC DREAM for trainer Noel Meade. This was their fourth meeting this season and from a 15-length advantage to BROOME first time, the gap has closed each time with HELVIC DREAM within a length last time in the Mooresbridge. TRUE SELF was a close third beaten barely a length and I wonder if this dual Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner may be facing another antipodean campaign later in the year. As said, the front three were well clear of the remainder - CAYENNE PEPPER weakened dramatically in the final furlong for fourth while SERPENTINE beat only TIGER MOTH, the latter reported to have gurgled in the final 200m and was almost pulled up by the line. The 1000 Guineas was going to be every bit as much a war as the colts' classic. Those close to the pace and having had a run were at a clear advantage and JOAN OF ARC looked to have seen off NO SPEAK ALEXANDER before being cut down in the last stride by stable companion EMPRESS JOSEPHINE who was herself having her fifth run of the season. The winner was 14s having come into the race off a rating of just 101 so you're not seeing a quality classic here by any stretch. PRETTY GORGEOUS travelled well to 300m out but this wasn't a day to be coming in anything less than match fit. With a 125/1 shot in fourth and the first five split by a length and a half, I'm far from convinced. 12. My take on it is that the status quo is wrong ,just because it is common practice doesnt make it right. My earlier post compared stock market futures( gambling in a " live event") and the protected status for bookmakers being allowed to cancel a contract when they lose AFTER THE EVENT,call a spade a shovel and stop defending these crooks just because they all do it.

  13. There's plenty more that result in a clear ,accurate , interesting call of the races from Aaron White. Paints the picture of the race very well IMO. The city of Sails........starter Frank Phelan [ no need to ask who the starter is , unlike in South !] The Chief ,the wizard , the magic man, jimmy Stormont. Up on the nickel , this class of pony ,in the box seat ! In the jewels jacket ,in the breckon jacket , . The lead up time ,the son of American Ideal , waiting on the HR FIsken passing lane. Takes up the leeway ,tracks up the favourite , . Goes up in the air , Deep on the passing lane , getting to the outside ,charging late , given full bore . The lead up time , the back strait quarter. Names the sponsors , humanises the drivers /trainers and raises his voice at right time ,highlights when leader getting an easy lead time etc. Field sizes often less than 10 so has the time to say all these things .....funny how the 'all dressed up and nowhere to go' irritates some but there are horses under lock and key , either 3 back or 4 back on fence in almost every race so the listener left in no doubt where their horse is !!!! Does an EXCELLENT job IMO !

  15. I see what your getting at Breeder , I kind of thought lower than higher as not a stellar pedigree ,and champion race mares produce a share of duds . I was well off with 800k though . I suppose it's only a few years and we wil get idea how well spent 2. 6 mil was . Good on the owners .

    Yeh boy!!!

Yeah - well sort of. Does gallops as well - don't know if he still on the payroll or just paid for articles published. Herald have very few permanent staff these days and I suppose they don't need any since it is no longer a NEWSpaper but rather a GOSSIPPAPER with a few pages of news No proof reading any more!
