  3. As one of the staff members I find your comment completely distasteful and uninformed. None of us do drugs and I don't think anyone snuck into a stable to have a bit of meth in the middle of the night. It's much more likely that someone who works at Awapuni has been urinating in stables and contamination has come that way. Or sneaking off to stables to have a pipe during work. All track riders and stable staff should be tested randomly all over NZ. But, as we all know the industry doesn't have the resources or money to do this and neither do the trainers. Sad really because this is going to keep occuring and disgracing good people and their staff who work hard everyday and to the best of their knowledge present their horses drug free. Furthermore, many tracks in NZ do not have enough tie up stall to accommodate all the runners, therefore there is no option other than a stable (which are generally dirty, dusty and delapidated) to put your horse. I worked in Melbourne for a decade and random drug testing was conducted at track work regularly. As were pre race bloods and urine.on raceway for horses. There were enough tie ups at every course and security present. Without implementing some of these practices other hard working trainers and staff are going to be dragged over the coals. It's bloody hard doing this job but to be labeled that we are on drugs is just a kick in the guts. Unfortunately you won't be the only one making these assumptions, and when we attend the races we will all have the cloud of doubt and suspicion over our heads. Nothing quiet like being a suspected Meth head I agree with you on drug testing and not enough tie ups. However I struggle to believe that 2 boxes were urinated in by the same person who was smoking p on course.... There is a toilet block very close by these boxes even it was a staff member who had been sneaking off for a wee... I dont what the answer is and not blaming Allan's staff either so sorry didnt mean to offend you cant allan just say he put the horses out in the paddock with some cattle the night before the race? that defense works for some!

  10. With the proposal of the new Auckland Turf Club merger... could a National Racing Museum be on the cards again at Ellerslie? In 2006 The NZ Herald reported that a new $5 million museum to house the collection was to be established. It has taken 166 years to honour the thoroughbred in New Zealand, but we are almost there. Wendy Pye, chairman of the New Zealand Champions Racing Museum Charitable Trust, this week unveiled the design of the proposed museum, to be built at Ellerslie. The first thoroughbred landed in New Zealand in 1840 and the history of the industry that now adds about $1 billion to the gross national product each year will be highlighted in the museum, which is due to open in 2008. Funding of about $400,000 has already been received. Another $4 million is being sought to complete the project. Construction is expected to start Project support has been provided by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Association. A detailed model places the building within its setting, to the right of the main racecourse entrance, overlooking the Lawn Gardens and facing the Ellerslie Convention Centre. "The trust's vision for the museum is about celebrating the extraordinary history of thoroughbred racing in New Zealand," Mrs Pye said. "A national racing museum will allow us to share treasures and stories that will otherwise be lost or forgotten. "We also aim to use that rich heritage to create a world-class interactive experience for local and international visitors, a centre for equine research and education, and a welcoming gateway for participation in every part of the thoroughbred industry." Mrs Pye said the design of the museum exterior included elements of traditional stables but the interior would be that of a modern, interactive museum. The main exhibition area on the ground floor would include many elements of the racecourse experience. First floor displays would include a virtual race ride on an electronic horse, an equine science display, racing colours design and a permanent home for the recently established New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame. Also included in the complex would be a cafe, research area and a movie and lecture theatre. New Zealand's climate and environment proved to be perfect for breeding horses, with studs such as Trelawney and Cambridge adding to a national roll of honour that includes 41 Melbourne Cups. Kiwi-bred champions Carbine and Phar Lap established a tradition of international excellence maintained into the modern era by the likes of Bonecrusher, Horlicks, Octagonal, Might And Power, Sunline and Starcraft. Harness racing in New Zealand has a world class museum at Auckland's Alexandra Park. - NZPA In November 2010 the following blog post appeared on Genealogy New Zealand. Lyn, who is the author, had noted that the entire collection of the National Racing Museum was in storage. Being such a big part of life in New Zealand you might think that the racing industry would have its own museum. It did have one at the Ellerslie Race Course up until 2003. It was run by enthusiastic volunteers with no real training and it became a central repository for regalia and records. But sadly, the building it occupied was condemned and the contents were stored in a very bad manner. This was soon rectified by a well-known business woman who moved the contents into a warehouse and a container. Concerned she had contacted the Head of New Zealand Racing Simon Cooper who was in charge of the collection noting: To cut a long story short; the NZ Thoroughbred Racing Board of whom Simon Cooper is currently head of, has the ownership of the treasure but doesn't seem to be doing anything with it. The Auckland Racing Club it still looking after part of the contents but again, doesn't seem very enthusiastic about it. HUNTING FOR THE HEAD OF THE GREAT CHAMPION CARBINE RELICS OF CARBINE FAMOUS RACEHORSE'S HEAD GIFT TO AUCKLAND MUSEUM The memory of Carbine, the famous racehorse who was bred at Sylvia Park and who died in England in 1914, will appropriately be kept green in Auckland by two interesting momentoes. Some time ago, Carbine's owner, the Duke of Portland, forwarded the skin as a gift to the Auckland Racing Club. The Committee of the club in view of the great interest attaching to Carbine and his great feats in the racing world, decided that such proportion of gift as was suitable for public exhibition should be presented to the Auckland Museum. The skin was to be found unsuitable for a full mounting in the ordinary manner, and it was decided to present the head and neck portion to the Museum. This has been successfully mounted by Mr Griffin, the taxidermist at the Museum. The interesting relic will be placed on a suitable shield, and will shortly be on exhibition in the Museum. An inscribed silver plate, containing a record of Carbine's Pedigree performances and total winnings, will be attached. The remainder of the skin will be converted by the club into a chair cover. Carbine's skeleton was presented by the Duke of Portland to the Melbourne Museum, where it has been set up. For years, the mounted head of Carbine resided in the Auckland War Memorial Museum keeping company with Rajah the Elephant. His impressive extended pedigree hung on the wall along side, with his tail mounted with silver beside the head. Sometime in the 1990's, the Auckland Museum loaned Carbine to the National Racing Museum, then based at Ellerslie Racecourse, as part of the collection of New Zealand's racing heritage. In 2003 the building in which the collection was housed was demolished, and the museum was left with no home.

  13. Lets face it... the all weather Synthetic track at Cambridge is no Strathayr turf surface that the proposed Auckland Turf Club is going to implement. As I've stated before nothing less than a premier Strathayr turf racetrack is required for Premier racing in NZ ! The Cambridge installed all weather track will have it's purpose for trainer's preparing there better horses for spring campaigns and slower horses in winter that would otherwise be in a paddock. Remember this is nothing more than a midweek class racetrack for Maidens, Rating 65's & 74's at best... that fit's a purpose in the small scheme of things. This will do little to attract punters or increase much needed turnover NZ Racing needs! We need more Premier Strathayr turf racetracks installed south of the Bombay's in horse populated areas if we want premier racing, with high class thoroughbreds and increased turnover from punters! However after watching the inaugural running of the first meeting on Wednesday I was buoyed by the fact it played well for all runners with little evidence of the boring leader's bias these all weather tracks generally produce. There is hope for punter's confidence if this trend can continue after the honeymoon period! Congratulations to Cambridge JC for all the hard work that resulted in a successful first days racing on the new racetrack. Positivity and team work particularly at Club level is always needed to help move NZ Racing forward into the future because in recent years its lacked strong leadership at any higher level.

  14. Did I read this correctly that they aren't even testing the concentration so they cant tell if some one did actually give a horse or dog p intentially or just some staff member or contaminated box and the sensitive test picked it up? I don't believe anyone would give a horse/dog p its not going to make it run faster its not a performance enhancer. So a lot of innocent trainers are getting tarred with being a cheat when it really is something they no control over

  17. I hope they are also investigating the betting activity around the 2 horses. Surely if this was intentionally done by an outsider taking advantage of no security that would be the motive, placing a bet on a "sure thing". They wouldn't care if the horse tested positive later since the bet would have already paid out. A possibility to rule in or out?

  27. Thanks pogo.....another aussie expert on NZ racing is much appreciated.....I mean you have been to NZ twice , so you well qualified. The polytrack is one of the main training tracks at the huge Caulfield and Randwick training centres. The main use of these in NZ is intended to be for training purposes...over 1000 horses are based in Cambridge....over 400 worked on the track yesterday morning prior to race day. 170 horses raced in trials on the track the day prior. NZ trainers who regularly 'perform ' in Aussie....eg Baker ,Pike,Richards ,Marsh,James support the track and will continue to excel there...bit like our cricketers who now have a decent surface to prepare on !! These top horseman along with Aussies top jockey JM fully endorse it . In addition to assist the prep of horses it will be used a few times...... I think 5 x planned days this year to take the pressure off other tracks in times of a bog or bad weather. Not only to keep betting ticking over but to return $ to industry participants like workers ,jockeys and owners ! Mid -week winter Industry days actually don't attract much betting so down side there very low . But keep an eye on NZ racing scene......things must get a bit boring in Aussie ...plus a few negaholics here looking for some misery company

  31. Exactly. Good horses traditionally get turned out to avoid breaking them on heavy 10s, and start getting brought back in about July. Only trouble is then half of them couldn't get a good enough surface to gallop on often enough in their prep to even make it to their target races, eg Spring Carnival in Oz. This opens up the options for prep and conditioning considerably amongst other benefits. It won't magically solve all the problems but it's a great start. Well done to CJC for a successful first race day.

  32. Mark Fraser-Campin deserves a massive pat on the back. Has gone into the CEO position at the Cambridge Jockey Club with passion, vision, and forward thinking What he has achieved shouldnt be under rated. A place on the NZTR board for Mark would only be of benefit to the industry. He has skin in the game and knows how the game works. As i say you cant teach or buy passion and Mark has plenty of it. Sure it won't solve all problems but a track like this keeps horses in work who would normally be going for a spell and also creates another grade so to speak. There will be horses who excel on this track that aren't much chop on the turf so it gives trainers, owners and horses more options. Hats off to the industry for doing something new. You dont go forward by standing still. And the bitching about it being funded government money is a joke. Have a look and see what other things are government funded. This is at least funding an industry that employs thousands and stops us pumping more than another 3.3 billion into the benefit. Only need to look at Australia to see what a successful racing industry can return for a government. We are a hard working bunch of tax paying battlers who deserve a bit of government assistance. The next challenge is bringing the younger generation into the sport as workers or fans. Negative talk isnt going to help with that so lets keep it to a minimum. over and out

  33. nothing wrong with betting on a heavy 10 but be patient and wait and see what transpires we have the benefit of years of experiencing these joke tracks and races , predominantly in bleak wet victoria where they exist to ensure some turnover rather than none . the fact imported stayers clean up in oz has absolutely nothing to do with synthetic tracks, get serious, are you suggesting they grow a leg by running on these sufraces

Wasted talent to be out, like many he's had/s his share of load to deal with, it's a hard life they live & kudos to him for getting through as much as he has, no easy task & males just aren't good at acknowledging & worse at accepting genuine support. No need to kick those when they down, should be offering a helping hand at the very least, it's all in the delivery of whether it's accepted. Wish Jason all the best whatever his & his family's future holds. I do find it a "privacy" issue that their home address was made public. Unacceptable IMHO regardless of current or not

It is not surprising they are showing up as 3 + yr olds. The family developed so well by the Dennis family were not, in general, winners as two year olds. They took a bit of time and were better at 1400-2200m. Hopefully those owners with patience are rewarded.

  44. Good acquisition, just great to see one of the big studs has made a big move. Was beginning to worry the Kiwi studs were holding the powder dry, especially when Henry Plumptre was quoted as saying Cambridge had pulled out of the bidding on Russian Camelot because they were still concerned about broodmare returns in NZ. Feels like we just have too much pessimism in our market. Plumptre said that in the same breath as announcing Almanzor's and Hello Youmzain's books were booked full early! (Head scratch) The Aussie sales were through the roof and we should be capitalising too. Not sure of Cambridge's insurance position but I would've thought after they haemorrhaged three stallions the same month at Christmas 2019 that we'd see the Sistema lunchbox money kick in and have the three replaced straight away. For one of the biggest studs in the country to only carry three stallions is a flawed strategy to me. They are aiming for big elite stallions, when once upon a time Sir Patrick bought a stallion of little race record, sight unseen, that his agent described as "He's weak, he's got bent hocks, and on the walk from behind one hock rolls out badly. He is a most unattractive horse and, in my opinion, not the horse for you." Sir Tristram started a dynasty, no reason why Cambridge oughtn't play a numbers game and get up to six to eight stallions to try to deliver another. They of all studs have a fair share of hits and misses over the years. For a hit Zabeel there was a miss Centro, for a Cape Cross a Lucky Unicorn, for a Keeper a Viking Ruler. Beautiful bloodlines on those misses, you just have to have stallion volumes to guarantee yourself a hit. C'mon Henry not too late to dust off the cobwebs on the wallet.
