Baz (NZ) and 9 others reacted to High Sparrow for a topic
Jockeys take their lives in their hands every day they go to work and I am always saddened if any of them get injured and there have a been a good many seriously so or worse over the years. That goes for track riders and stablehands too - anyone who works with horses is always in danger. The "grandstand jockeys" always talk through their pockets, people who've probably never ridden a horse at speed in their lives and have no appreciation of what it's like to be taking your chances with split second decisions that could have tragic consequences for you or someone else in a race. These are the people that would complain about a meeting being called off because there was a fall in the first race and the stewards had deemed the track too dangerous to continue. They don't think about the riders' safety. Michael has had his fair share of challenges over the years both on and off the track but he's a top rider at his best and I hope he makes a full recovery.10 points -

Oh dear a poster who cannot accept that on Premier nights some stables are just outstanding. They set them up to win for their high paying owners with a "the best will win" scenario. Well done Mr Cullen 5 wins 6 placings4 points

Sad news this morning here in Cambridge, former Racing Scribe Alf Kneebone passed away peacefully overnight, aged 98. An absolute gentleman, he was heavily involved back in the day, when we actually had racing scribes, not uncommon to have 10 or 12 up in the designated Press Box, and the papers were full of Racing Information, form, trackwork and a breakdown of the field His legacy continues with Son Bernard doing the trackwork here at Cambridge and Tony is heavily involved in the Victorian scene. RIP Alf.2 points -
Terrible news about Michael Walker. Sustained a broken leg in a race fall on Thursday night. Very lucky it’s not worse by the sound of it. I wish him well and a speedy recovery.2 points

What did I say .. we now know a co-owner of the meth related dog is on the RIU board. Absolutely incredible, considering he knows the history of the kennel. And MARK my words he is not the only one by a long chalk.1 point

Using a very imaginative definition of abuse are you referring to my suggestion that having stablemates in races is an advantage? Didn't you think the way the winner and Franco Mac exchanged the lead without any resistance only something stablemates would do? Just an opinion, not abuse - no swear words or calling anybody an idiot Nobody should have to put up with that (deserves in your opinion!) from keyboard warriors who would not have the guts to talk like that to your face1 point -

I used to transcribe the trackwork from Alf when he rang it through to us at the Friday Flash back in the day (Tuesday and Thursday trackwork) and as you say Chris, a great scribe who knew his oats from his chaff and was an absolute gentleman. That's a great photo from the Ellerslie press room and I have good memories of rubbing shoulders with several of those guys when they came south occasionally, usually at cup time. RIP Alfie. You were one of nature's gentleman. My deepest sympathies to his family.1 point -

They earn their money the jockeys , best wishes to Michael, always seems to give his rides every chance IMHO. One those jockeys I am always pleased to see get a win even if he has nosed out one of my bets .1 point

Heard Lance O'sullivan during week really promoting his apprentice Yuto Kumagai as one to watch out for. One ride yesterday and one win. Sure there is going to be more especially in winter with 4 kg allowance. Another one been backing with good results is Smiling Joe Kamaruddin, rides alot for Jamie Richards. See he's here in Taranaki today and riding a few for the locals. Hope I haven't put a curse on them.1 point

Its sad that its come to this for you and many other harness enthusiasts. What bothers me more and I'm sure I'm not alone is that many condone such actions. the old saying " its only a rort if your not involved" seems to pervade the industry despite the recent apprehensions. Long deterrent sentences seem to be the only way to enhance the integrity and credibility of the game if it is to survive let alone thrive IMHO1 point

No! That is not correct. Counties has a large land holding in excess to their needs. They pay extensive rates to just grow grass on this. The most saleable is the area adjacent to Manakau Rd next to the bulk retail centre that was formerly the Wrightson block owned by CRC. and sold for about 12m. Operating costs of CRC are swallowing the 12m. The now saleable site is said to be worth 12m but in my view would be best developed and held by the club to be formed The really redundant piece again in my view is the "Island Block " a triangular section of land with the long side adjacent to Buckland Rd the other two sides to the Triangle are the entrances to the racecourse. Go to maps and Buckland Rd and expand and you will be able to see. Down on the flat near Buckland would be a great place for large stabling. There would need to be a crossing over the course proper or a tunnel under (box culverts) It is clear that CRC could have gone it alone and developed their assets but they have lacked the expertise and the will to do so. But that has become redundant now as what is good for Racing overides parochialism. I am an honarary member to CRC and also run a property and investment company. I was not taking shots at the naysayers but really if you dont know the issues then the discussion is not advanced1 point

The Hill gone forever.
Insider reacted to John Clydesdale for a topic
Tasman, haven’t been involved with Avondale for a few years now, just a member. So no bias at all, a previous Board at Ellerslie sold a lease on some land, not wanted by them, but negating a lease that the Thoroughbred Breeders Head office had on those same grounds. Under the watch of CEO Chris Weaver, forcing NZTBA to sell a building that had been build with the hard work and good support of breeders, for next to nothing. However, that long lease arrangement generated a significant sum, pre paid, to the ARC (of which I was a member at the time) to allow ARC to invest in various areas and provide a significant reserve sum. A good move for the club balance sheet, somewhat disingenuous of the CEO at the time about the TBA Lease, but they have reserves worthy of an educational course to John Allen of RIB fame. Same CEO wanted to sell the hill for commercial purposes, but the pushback was too strong. There is no need to sell the hill, as the reserves are good and the interest return would be extremely poor, so why do it. I struggle to think that they would consider such a move at this time, but then, they are not perhaps as smart as previous boards. I am not longer a member at Auckland Racing Club, only Avondale and the VRC, who do know what they are doing and have done so for a very long time. Cheers John1 point -
Review into greyhound racing
mightymike reacted to Tauhei Notts for a topic
I saw a lovely video of a race at Gawler. One dog was put over the fence, then he cut the corner and ran around the inside of the track and beat everything else. Of course he was not the declared winner, as he had cut the corner by so much, but that dog so loved racing that he would do anything to join the others. They love racing.1 point -

I do hope those responsible or involved in this review are made to read the article by Jim Edwards on this very issue to provide some balance to the activists whose sole purpose in life seems to be to stop greyhound racing. The greyhounds, btw, would tell you, if they could, that they love racing. No whips, no jockey, no driver. Just competitive animals bred to race and enjoying it.1 point -
