    Michael Walker

Terrible news about Michael Walker. Sustained a broken leg in a race fall on Thursday night. Very lucky it’s not worse by the sound of it. I wish him well and a speedy recovery.

  2. Oh dear a poster who cannot accept that on Premier nights some stables are just outstanding. They set them up to win for their high paying owners with a "the best will win" scenario. Well done Mr Cullen 5 wins 6 placings

  7. Its sad that its come to this for you and many other harness enthusiasts. What bothers me more and I'm sure I'm not alone is that many condone such actions. the old saying " its only a rort if your not involved" seems to pervade the industry despite the recent apprehensions. Long deterrent sentences seem to be the only way to enhance the integrity and credibility of the game if it is to survive let alone thrive IMHO

  10. is this the first time Natalie has driven a non Cullen horse.AND against one of his. I wonder why ? (am aware the A team own South Coast Arden since 2018)but had considered her a stable driver... for Hayden Cullen.. Of course she as a non trainer can drive whatever she wants but thought Chase Auckland was logical for the best driver in NZ (IMHO)

    Promising Jockeys

Heard Lance O'sullivan during week really promoting his apprentice Yuto Kumagai as one to watch out for. One ride yesterday and one win. Sure there is going to be more especially in winter with 4 kg allowance. Another one been backing with good results is Smiling Joe Kamaruddin, rides alot for Jamie Richards. See he's here in Taranaki today and riding a few for the locals. Hope I haven't put a curse on them.

    Michael Walker

Surgeons have had to cut open the leg of jockey Michael Walker to relieve pressure following a nasty fall at Pakenham on Thursday night. Speaking to Racing.com from his bed at Dandenong Hospital on Friday morning, Walker explained that his leg, which he broke in the fall, remains open in two places and will be closed with further surgery on Sunday. "They've had to cut open my leg from the knee down on both sides as there was so much pressure," Walker said. "They had to do it because if not there was a possibility the nerves in my leg could die, and then the leg could die and then who knows what happens, they may have had to amputate. "I'm booked in to have surgery on Sunday and the leg will remain open until then." A shattered Walker said he was also informed on Friday morning that he has torn his ACL in his knee, an injury that can keep footballers on the sidelines for up to 12 months. "I can't believe it, it was one of the most harmless falls I've ever been involved in and could be the worst," Walker said. "I knew straight away I was in trouble because the pain in my leg was excruciating. I knew it was broken straight away and the pressure build up was a bit scary. "The break is one thing, I've dealt with broken bones before, but I'm shattered about the ACL. "I gave permission for the doctors to explore if I had any more issues in my leg and then they found the issue with the ACL. "I've got more tests and scans to come because I'm in a fair bit of pain, I've got an MRI on my neck and shoulders, I think it should be okay, they don't think it is anything serious outside of the leg at this point." The fall occurred in the final race at Pakenham on Thursday night, with Walker crashing to the track approaching the home bend. He said he can recall the incident and remembers shifting to avoid a horse who was tiring through the field. "I could see the horse coming back quickly and I tried to pop off to avoid it but I had Ben Allen to my outside and he had a rider tight to his outside, there wasn't a lot of room and I was half a length in behind and then there was slight movement and I came down," he said. Stewards took initial evidence from Allen (Heljami), Daniel Stackhouse (Divine Rule) and Teo Nugent (Classy Pins) at Pakenham on Thursday night but have adjourned their inquiry to a later date so they can allow time before speaking to Walker.

  21. Final declarations are through for Sunday's Guineas meeting at Longchamp. 12 go in the Poulains which looks, if anything, a stronger race than the English equivalent at Newmarket. The winner of that race, POETIC FLARE, faces last autumn's Dewhurst winner, ST MARK'S BASILICA, who was taken out of the Newmarket race with the ground on the quick side. In Paris, there's been plenty of rain and the ground is Good to Soft. I fancy the latter to have the edge - the Ballydoyle horses are starting to come into a bit of form. Of the others, the Fontainebleau winner POLICY OF TRUTH, the second, SEALAWAY, the third SUMMITER and the fourth and fifth, EASTER, and the favourite, PARCHEMIN, all take their chance. They finished in a heap that day and I've little clue which of them will come out on top but they only bring Group 3 form to a Group 1 race. MEHMENTO chased home CHINDIT in the Greenham and for all the latter did little for the form in the 2000 Guineas, MEHMENTO put up a decent effort and might be able to use front running tactics to advantage 14 stand in the Pouliches - again the Newmarket victor, this time MOTHER EARTH, comes on to Paris. She did it well enough and her main threat looks to be the Penelope winner PHILOMENE but that race is more a Diane trial and the step back in trip might not be ideal. SWEET LADY was a close fourth in a bunch finish to the Grotte having thrashed TIGER TANAKA in a Listed at the end of March. British challenger LULLABY MOON looks to have a bit to find and I'm more interested in the Irish raider MISS AMULET who brings solid Group1 form to the table. She was runner up in the Cheveley Park and third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. I think she barely gets 1600m but the flat Longchamp track and the style of French racing might give her a chance. It's a big ask first time out and MOTHER EARTH looks the one providing her Newmarket exertions haven't left a mark.

They lose their race licenses, identity etc but as nerula has said save millions in operational costs? BTW I'm all for a Strath track , we should have had one before the AWT imho

  41. Cheer up there...it will all work out ! The detailed ground work is done but as stated above ,still needs Club members approval ! Why are you concerned / Whats your angle ? The annual reports show the current positions of the clubs. Stakes paid are available on NZTR website for every race. No racing club survives on Racing alone....in recent years the ARC have needed their Events centre and Return on Investment Fund to break even /show a trading profit ! Have a play with their numbers.... Play with a nest egg of $200 mill invested.....and $250 mil................plenty of examples around Allow for cost of Strathayr track ! I think it very exciting.....I just hope the hot chips stay @ $5 !

  44. No! That is not correct. Counties has a large land holding in excess to their needs. They pay extensive rates to just grow grass on this. The most saleable is the area adjacent to Manakau Rd next to the bulk retail centre that was formerly the Wrightson block owned by CRC. and sold for about 12m. Operating costs of CRC are swallowing the 12m. The now saleable site is said to be worth 12m but in my view would be best developed and held by the club to be formed The really redundant piece again in my view is the "Island Block " a triangular section of land with the long side adjacent to Buckland Rd the other two sides to the Triangle are the entrances to the racecourse. Go to maps and Buckland Rd and expand and you will be able to see. Down on the flat near Buckland would be a great place for large stabling. There would need to be a crossing over the course proper or a tunnel under (box culverts) It is clear that CRC could have gone it alone and developed their assets but they have lacked the expertise and the will to do so. But that has become redundant now as what is good for Racing overides parochialism. I am an honarary member to CRC and also run a property and investment company. I was not taking shots at the naysayers but really if you dont know the issues then the discussion is not advanced

  46. Why $100,000 stakes? Spending the money like the Labour/Green government before even earning it ! EASY EASY SOFTLY SOFTLY Auckland Turf Club! How about just doubling stakes for the first few years. i.e $20,000 Maidens scaled upwards on Rating bands from there is a fine starting point. We've been racing for shit stakes i.e.$10,000 maidens for years so doubling this would be a massive help to stimulate racing ... rather than blowing the lot in 5 years with over inflated stakes. 100% increase in stakes over a longer period than a 1000% increase over a short term is a safer savvy economic plan.
