Economics lesson 101 for those that can't see the big picture problem with these stud sponsored weanling sales. The horse breeding business is really no different to any other business - you have wholesalers (studs), retailers (breeders) and customers (buyers). When the wholesalers (studs) start undercutting the retailers (breeders), the customers (buyers) are naturally going to buy directly from the wholesaler (at the weanling sales). This will result in many retailers (breeders) going out of business because their customers (buyers) can now buy their product in bulk directly from the wholesaler (at the weanling sales) at a much reduced price due to the wholesalers (studs) much lower costs (stud fees).

Maybe ......but it is puzzling how an alleged offence can be committed on a Tuesday , then in the papers the very next day. Gathering facts ,statements etc would normally take a little time with reports etc to go to various folk to decide on action. Seems like the 'bloodhound' has direct line to the Press !

Having bred many horses over years the profit potential is simply being eroded by acceptance of $4000 to $6000 sales of quality weanlings by the studs that try to have it both ways .they want payment plus add ons for breeding a foal then accept lower prices for selling their own progeny from their own mares.It is good for those that want to race horses (very tempting)but expect even lower mares bred this season .. by private breeders.

Pick 2 horses in each of the nominated races below. 1st – 5 points 2nd – 3 points 3rd – 1 point Strike the Quinella – total of 16 points. Scratchings go onto the TAB tote favourite, and if you already have the favourite then you get the next shortest price runner.(if 2 horses have the same tote price, you will get the highest listed horse in the race). Prizes will be $1,000 in total. The winner of this week will get $100 . Prizes for the overall winner of the 2 week comp will be: 1st - $600 2nd - $200 3rd - $100 All bets to be taken as a single W/P bet on one horse on the tote and 50% of any winnings to go towards future competition prizes. Looking back on the first day of the Chester May meeting with overnight and morning rain turning the ground Good to Soft, Soft in places. John Gosden thought the ground "tacky" and Aidan O'Brien withdrew a couple of his runners from the Vase. The Oaks Trial saw DUBAI FOUNTAIN score a narrow win over the arguably unlucky ZEYAADAH who had to sit and suffer as the winner got first run in the straight. I thought DUBAI FOUNTAIN was a steal at 7/4 based on his fourth in the Fillies Mile last autumn when she was just a neck behind MOTHER EARTH who won the 1000 Guineas. Group 1 form in Listed company - that's a clue in itself. I did think the second shaped with a lot of promise and the two could both be above average fillies. The colts trial saw the favourite WIRKO well beaten off in fourth behind YOUTH SPIRIT who had shown plenty of soft ground form as a juvenile. The second, SANDHURST, the remaining Ballydoyle runner, ran on well and he's the one I would take with Epsom in mind. On Sunday, three Group 3 races in Ireland at Leopardstown where the ground remains on the fast side though rain is forecast tomorrow. The Derby Trial sees Ballysax winner BOLSHOI BALLET take on the useful MAC SWINEY, who won the Vertem Futurity at Doncaster. The former has race fitness, course form and is proven on the ground so is understandably 5/4 favourite. The 1000 Guineas Trial looks wide open - SENSE OF LIGHT and JOAN OF ARC were third and sixth in a 1400m Group 3 last month. I'm more interested in the maiden winner ACANELLA and especially in the Dermot Weld trained SHANDRA who won on debut last summer at The Curragh over 1400m and could be anything (as they say). I do think on her breeding she's going to be a middle distance type and this could be sharp enough on debut. ACE AUSSIE chased home POETIC FLARE in the 2000 Guineas Trial last month and with the latter going on to win at Newmarket it's no surprise ACE AUSSIE is 7/4 favourite to win the Amethyst over 1600m. Joseph O'Brien runs RAISE YOU and NUMERIAN and the former looks the obvious challenger to the 3-y-o.

Absolute disaster, only the big studs can sale cheap. Because it doesn’t cost them anything for service fees..

To John and others who maybe resent the 'big studs'. If breeding horses to make money is so easy we would all be doing it........if its easy for the 'big studs' then lets join a co-op and get big. I very much doubt the 'big studs' make easy or excess profits . Seems to me their overheads would be huge........they seem to employ many staff , have big properties and the Stallions or semen don't come cheap. i have seen 'big studs' looking quite pale and unwell at sales time ! One exception would be the owner of Bettor's Delight who is a once in lifetime horse.....a Champion sire.....rated possibly as the best Stallion of any code/animal in the world. Good luck to that Stud ,but their next 10 or more could be average or duds. I note too that the 'big studs' sponsor many of the races and are giving back to the Sport continuously.......they are not just passing through and I cant see why we should resent them. Like any business they need cash flow so I see the hocking off of weanlings at unreserved prices as a way of giving cash flow to their business plus they save the holding costs of housing,vetting and feeding them for another year ...as well as the preparation costs. Hobby breeders should be that....a hobby.....if doing it for business or money making ,expect the competition from the 'big studs'. Yes ,Ive tried a little breeding.....co-bred several winners on the track [ galloping] , made zero from racing them and taken a bath from selling them....not even got the Stud fee back at Sale !

Would John Allan and/or Dean McKenzie have known of the open bet connection during negotiations with that party.

I see one of his better runners has gone to oz,looking to next winter be interesting to see what effect the new track at Riccarton will have if any on the likes of trainers like Tyler's3 less days at washdyke,only time will tell.

Perhaps a slightly lesser class of horse down there though it's all relative, but just goes to show it's not what you do, it's the way that you do it.

A suspect of killing the 7 year old girl above was shot multiple times by police in Chicago as he tried to carjack a car after crashing another car. His condition has not been disclosed. Not a bad result.
