Oh Dear- M Anderson
JJ Flash and 3 others reacted to We're Doomed for a topic
Sadly, a lot of these younger trainers have probably been brought up on stories of shady deeds throughout the ages in harness racing, and figure they are just carrying on the way things have always been. They are probably just too thick to realise times have changed and you can't get away with tricks that might have worked 20 or 40 years ago.4 points -

I'm pleased to see someone mention what a great race the big jump was.3 points -
I have a mare in foal to Ribchester and was told I was mad for the reason that Aussie basically shunned him and the Iffraaj factor (being unfashionable etc) Obviously a lot has changed in regards to the Wootton Bassett sale and the popularity of his son Almanzours first yearling crop at the sale's. Let's hope the whispers Berri has heard come to fruition3 points

He should be banned for life. Disgusting and cruel. No regard for the horses welfare. He is scum.3 points

I think we might have to look at this stallion through different lenses. He's by Iffraaj and that is something that many have discounted but you can't anymore. His son Wootten Bassett is smoking hot as a sire, sold to Coolmore for 60m, and a stallion is producing sprinters and champion middle distance horses. Wootten Bassett himself was unbeaten at 2. Iffraaj, second up, ran 2nd in the Gimcrack at York. This is stallion shaping race...a 2 yo race in June over 1200 on a big galloping track. It used to be the defining race for how versatile a race horse was. The likes of Petingo, Mill Reef, Royal Applause, Rock of Gibraltar, Showcasing, and more recently champion sprinter Blue Point have all won this race. So a glimpse of things to come, when Richester ran second, was followed up by a smashing win in the Mill Reef (Gp2) and his very next start. Set aside for the winter, 2nd up as a three year old, he ran 3rd in the 2000 Guineas, then won the Jersey (a slick 1400m Gp3 at Ascot) and 2 starts later beat Vadamos in the Jacques d' Marois (Gp1) over 1600m. Third in that race was Ervedya, one of the seriously smart 3yo fillies who won the French 1000 Guineas, the Coronation in the UK and the Moulin...serious stuff. For Ribchester to have gone on to win the Lockhinge, the Queen Anne and the Moulin is cracking form. Reports back to me are brewing a profile of something really good is about to happen. One of his daughters has already won her first start. Others in the wings are talked about with some enthusiasm. As I said, might be time to change the lenses2 points

Weanling sale - Success or Disaster?
Stables and one other reacted to Flawed Genius for a topic
The big studs continue to talk up the success of their weanling sale but the numbers tell an "interesting" story. Take Bruce Negus for example, the biggest buyer on the day. His purchases at Karaka were : Lot 1 What The Hill – On the Mantelpiece Filly $3,000 (service fee $7000) Lot 22 Downbytheseaside – So Many Words Colt $4000 (service fee $6000) Lot 29 Majestic Son – Susan Colt $9000 (service fee $5000) Lot 43 Sweet Lou – Yasmine Bromac Filly $4000 (service fee $7500) Lot 47 Sweet Lou – Arden’s Pearl Filly $4000 (service fee $7500) Lot 73 A Rocknroll Dance – Chevelle Star Colt $2000 (service fee $5000) Lot 75 Ultimate Machete – Cracka Dawn Colt $3000 (service fee $3000) Lot 95 Downbytheseaside – G B Blaze Colt $4000 (service fee $6000) Lot 101 What The Hill – KC Spur Filly $4000 (service fee $7000) Lot 129 Sweet Lou – Nicky’s Power Filly $3000 (service fee $7500) Total paid: $40,000 Service Fees: $61,500 For the average breeder to have brought these yearlings to market would cost a very conservative $100,000, yet the big studs were prepared to dump these yearlings on the market for $40,000, thereby undercutting their own clients (and devaluing their clients remaining stock). Who experienced success here? Certainly not the average breeder!2 points -

What the F--K. Obviously if you come from north of the Waimakaria River and I refer to those on the HRNZ Board, trainer, driver, and all those involved within the industry you are exempt. Even if you are convicted and do not comply you still get away. Anderson should now be made an example of and a ten year banning would not go astray. He is nothing but trash and scum.2 points

One of these days I'll get round to Chester but the action comes up quick at this time of year and the final decs are through for Saturday. Seven meetings in the UK but quantity well ahead of quality if truth be told. Ascot's card isn't that strong so it's off to Lingfield for their biggest turf flat day of the year. The ground is Good ahead of a card that features Derby and Oaks Trials as well as a Group 3. For those who don't know, Lingfield has some resemblances to Epsom inasmuch as there is a significant run downhill before a left-hand turn into the straight which isn't far removed from Tattenham Corner. The Lingfield straight is much less complicated than Epsom with nomadverse camber or similar and the climb in the early part of the 2350m is nothing like that at Epsom. The race has had spells of popularity and some very good winners but went through a dip in the 2000s and 2010s until ANTHONY VAN DYCK won in 2019. Last year, ENGLISH KING was an impressive winner and went to Epsom as favourite but was disappointing. The huge news today was the withdrawal of HIGH DEFINITION - he's in both the Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday and the Dante at York next week. That leaves seven runners and it doesn't look a strong renewal. Aidan O'Brien runs KYPRIOS and CARLISLE BAY (the latter ridden by Frankie Dettori who abandons his beloved Ascot which is, I think, noteworthy). Both wear first time cheekpieces - KYPRIOS won a small race at Cork last month and I prefer CARLISLE BAY who was third in a Group 3 at Leopardstown last autumn. Favourite is ADAYAR who went into a lot of notebooks when chasing home ALENQUER at Sandown a fortnight ago. ETONIAN was a disappointing last when burdened with my cash and I just think we'll get a much better run from the latter on Saturday. I quite like SCOPE after his second at Newmarket but the trip is a real concern. Nine go in the Oaks Trial and again another weak offering with most of the field in the 80s and just TECHNIQUE and LOVING DREAM in the 90s. Both chased home promising types on their seasonal debuts - TECHNIQUE was a fine second to WIRKO at Epsom but I think LOVING DREAM's Wetherby second to NOON STAR might be the better form. The Chartwell is the Group 3 over 1400m for the fillies. Eight go to post and we have the rarity of a German raider in AXANA who won a Listed at Hoppegarten last time. It's an early opportunity for the 3-y-o to go up against the older fillies and mares and the classic generation is represented by ISABELLA GILES who was sixth to ALCOHOL FREE in the Fred Darling. The winner didn't get home over the 1600m at Newmarket last weekend but this is an easy 1400m and I fancy ISABELLA GILES for all she was a 5lb penalty for her win in the Group 2 Rockfel last autumn. BOUNCE THE BLUES and DOUBLE OR BUBBLE also have claims.1 point

Yes, PLEASANT MAN may not be the best in the yard - the maiden he won on debut at Haydock was probably not the best either. He's the dam's second foal - the first has run 14 times in Japan without troubling the judge. Staying up until 2.30am to watch a steeplechase at Kelso - we've all done it. Seriously, I'm delighted a little bit of UK racing gets shown in NZ. We are having earlier starts - 1pm at some meetings so that would be midnight with you. LAKE TAKAPUNA has been around a while - he was once trained by the great Dermot Weld. He's a full to a horse called DROP THE ANCHOR who was seventh in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and might make a nice chaser next season.1 point

Yes ; stud fees advertised is retail. That money is generally split between the actual stallion owner and the stud standing the stallion. The agrement woukd be something around 50/50 . It is why there was only 7 actual vendors for the whole sale. NZB would rather the smaller breeders to sell on Gavelhouse. You can get up to 20% discount in retail for multiple mares or early bird payment. The studs get close to 50% Art Major 14k Your mare, $11,200 + GST, add vet, working fee and grazing. You need approx 15k to make money. Their mare, an undisclosed fee to stallion owner ( could be as low as $3500 ; 2005/6 $6,600 ) + average of fixed costs and operating costs .1 point

Try this one Pam. https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=822699 Otherwise just google RSN John Wheeler. He only briefly referred to how badly run NZ Racing has been since 2003 early on, the rest of it is talking about the horses he has had. All very interesting though. It is good that he comes out and says what many people think, but sadly I think many of the older trainers have probably given up the fight regarding NZ Racing. It is the up and comers who need to show some interest or else the industry will disappear before they know it. It's incredible to imagine that an industry with so much history, and so many people intimately involved in it, can be taken over and destroyed by people with vested interests, no history in the industry and no financial investment, who can just walk away when they destroy everything. I imagine them walking away thinking "Oh well, that didn't work, but fuck, how stupid and gullible are those people to let us do all that, they really don't deserve to survive anyhow."1 point -
Very true 100 1 ! Day of reckoning has to come and that will occur when China lowers the boom on all the indebted dependant nations who have relied for years on cheap shit from China. No solace in Bitcoin however--just another Ponzi scheme. I'm about as optimistic for the World economy as I am for me making a profit from my NZ horse racing folly.1 point

The thing is, when a controlling body, be that a government or in this case HRNZ, are faced with dissent within the ranks they have two ways of dealing with it ... Fix the issues that the ranks are concerning about, or Quell the ranks HRNZ obviously realise that they have neither the desire nor the ability to fix the issues, so they've decided to go with Option #2! You only have to look to Russia to see how Putin is currently dealing with his critics to see this "business model" in practice!1 point -
