UK based wagering operator he worked for was Blue Square who under performed and was sold for a fraction of what it was once worth. Purchased by Betfair to acquire the customer data-base. Interesting to see Blue Square teamed up with the same outfit as the NZ TAB, Open Bet. In 2012 all the benefits of the renewed partnership advised to the media and 1 year later done and dusted. 2012 - Blue Square agree OpenBet deal Operators Blue Square Bet have extended their relationship with OpenBet by signing up to the supplier’s Online Product Roadmap. The online betting firm have signed a multi-year contract with the sportsbook and gaming software providers, continuing a partnership that dates back to 1999 when Blue Square were OpenBet’s first ever customers. The Online Product Roadmap brings together various products and is designed to allow Blue Square Bet to keep improving their overall online sportsbook performance (where have we heard that line before), as well as increasing scalability across a number of channels. The roadmap will also deliver improved liability management, enhanced bet placement and more sophisticated promotions. OpenBet chief executive officer David Loveday said: “We have had a very long and close relationship with Blue Square Bet that has seen both companies grow to become established brands in the gaming sector.” By signing up to our Online Product Roadmap, we look forward to continuing to provide the platform for their continued success and many more years working together.” Mark Jones, managing director of Rank Interactive, owners of Blue Square Bet, added: “Over the years we have built a relationship with OpenBet that is based on trust and delivery. “The dynamic of the relationship has meant that Blue Square Bet has been able to compete with the rest of the industry, sound in the knowledge that the platform on which we are built provides us with the best opportunity.” April 2013 Punters placing bets on Blue Square could be approaching the final whistle after a decision by Rank to sell or shut down the online sports bookmaker. Partly as a result of an imminent new tax on offshore online bets, Ian Burke, Rank’s chief executive, announced yesterday that the future of the loss-making Blue Square was under review. The leisure company wants to concentrate on its Grosvenor Casinos and Mecca Bingo businesses and on online games such as poker. Rank bought Blue Square in 2003 for £65 million from Icap, the City brokerage, although it is now thought to be worth a fraction of that. It has 120,000 customers but has floundered amid tough competition in digital sports betting from rivals such as William Hill, Paddy

  6. Interesting to see 102 acceptances at Riccarton this weekend. Compared with 121 acceptances at Timaru last weekend, plus a few eliminated horses. And yet Timaru isn't considered necessary going forward. You really do wonder what it is that some people don't understand. I just struggle to see how those 121 from last weekend will be better off with the $15m white elephant.

  7. Try this one Pam. https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=822699 Otherwise just google RSN John Wheeler. He only briefly referred to how badly run NZ Racing has been since 2003 early on, the rest of it is talking about the horses he has had. All very interesting though. It is good that he comes out and says what many people think, but sadly I think many of the older trainers have probably given up the fight regarding NZ Racing. It is the up and comers who need to show some interest or else the industry will disappear before they know it. It's incredible to imagine that an industry with so much history, and so many people intimately involved in it, can be taken over and destroyed by people with vested interests, no history in the industry and no financial investment, who can just walk away when they destroy everything. I imagine them walking away thinking "Oh well, that didn't work, but fuck, how stupid and gullible are those people to let us do all that, they really don't deserve to survive anyhow."

  8. The big studs continue to talk up the success of their weanling sale but the numbers tell an "interesting" story. Take Bruce Negus for example, the biggest buyer on the day. His purchases at Karaka were : Lot 1 What The Hill – On the Mantelpiece Filly $3,000 (service fee $7000) Lot 22 Downbytheseaside – So Many Words Colt $4000 (service fee $6000) Lot 29 Majestic Son – Susan Colt $9000 (service fee $5000) Lot 43 Sweet Lou – Yasmine Bromac Filly $4000 (service fee $7500) Lot 47 Sweet Lou – Arden’s Pearl Filly $4000 (service fee $7500) Lot 73 A Rocknroll Dance – Chevelle Star Colt $2000 (service fee $5000) Lot 75 Ultimate Machete – Cracka Dawn Colt $3000 (service fee $3000) Lot 95 Downbytheseaside – G B Blaze Colt $4000 (service fee $6000) Lot 101 What The Hill – KC Spur Filly $4000 (service fee $7000) Lot 129 Sweet Lou – Nicky’s Power Filly $3000 (service fee $7500) Total paid: $40,000 Service Fees: $61,500 For the average breeder to have brought these yearlings to market would cost a very conservative $100,000, yet the big studs were prepared to dump these yearlings on the market for $40,000, thereby undercutting their own clients (and devaluing their clients remaining stock). Who experienced success here? Certainly not the average breeder!

wow what a crock if any track needs a squawking budgerigar to make a race interesting it's in strife i guess you havent bothered to listen to his call of the last, it's typical of his listen to me look at me attention seeking drivel IMVHO the sold out crowd and level of interest the carnival draws indicates it's anything but a horrible spectacle.

  12. I'll catch up on Day One of Chester in time but some are getting excited about the Cheshire Oaks winner - well, maybe. Friday is the final day of the meeting and with the ground deteriorating to Good to Soft, Soft in places after showers , the 3650m Chester Cup (basically three times round the track) is going to be a test but in terms of quality, the Group 2 Huxley us the feature for the older horses over 2050m. Just five go to post and favourite is SANGARIUS, a horse of talent, no question, but he's coming back from a five month layoff and a second wind op. He won the Hampton Court at Ascot in 2019 and while no match for LORD NORTH in the Brigadier Gerard last year, he returned to beat BANGKOK in a listed at Lingfield just before Christmas. BANGKOK re-opposes but the main threat looks to be ARMORY who was last seen chasing home SIR DRAGONET in the Cox Plate. Before that, he was an unconsidered 66/1 shot when running a fine third to MAGICAL in the Irish Champion when he finished a place in front of the Arc winner SOTTSASS so on this you'd have to take him to win this.

  13. The issue isn't the big studs but lack of owners. As stated above it is simply supply and demand. I say thank goodness for the big studs because without them imagine how few horses would be bred. There are multiple reasons why people are choosing not to participate in harness racing, not the least being the high levels of debt many households have due to the high cost of housing and student loans.

  14. The studs were the majority offerers. They are all professional organisations. Do you really think they would sell at a loss? The stud fees you mention are "retail"

There are strict rules in play in the rules of harness racing for the benefit of the participants. Whip rules have been adjusted and penalties given when breached as a 'improvement' to horse welfare debateably , just like at the thoroughbreds. Blair Orange did time recently for the sake of a few beers? stewards were on to it ok? and McGrath (8 years) Alford and M Kerr , sure to be known to many, as they have been caught and penalised for illegal activities. So the No Action does NOT seem correct. Probably the Racing and greyhound codes in more disarray than the great lot of Harness people in NZ .

You are right, they are galloping tracks. Were else in the world do harness race professionally on grass tracks? We are living in the Dark Ages!!

  17. Good luck to Bruce Negus .obviously a great investment getting 10 nice looking weanlings (in the main well bred) for the cost of 1 or 2 yearlings. He could recoup the cost of all at yearling sales by selling a few and then has 7 or 8 free potential race horses. Auctions are simply supply and demand and a great opportunity for a bargain. however agree that studs selling less than stud fees is not a good look and can only make many breeders think why should they bother.

  18. Out of touch really. The only thing worse than people wanting to comment on Harness Racing is nobody interested enough to say anything.

  19. You have to wonder whose idea this is . Obviously got board approval if its going out for feedback. Another example of how incompetent HRNZ really is.

  20. I imagine it would be pretty hard to circumvent the various freedom of speech laws in NZ. "Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, including the right to seek, receive, and impart information and opinions of any kind in any form". And with the Racing Industry's record of poor management and ignoring the rights and interests of stakeholders, someone would be able to argue a pretty strong case for speaking out before a court. They would only have to point to the case of the ATC to show what can happen without any scrutiny of incompetent management.

The $5 raffle ticket entry means it is truly open to all getting a chance of a slot, not just the elite like the everest or magic millions to a certain extent, also they know the sales of tickets have put them in front before the race is run,a win/win situation.open to all country horses, open to all punters, but you have to be open to the idea......

NZ has never copied a single successful idea from anywhere else; none that I can recall anyhow. All we take from Aussie is their unwanted administrators who can't get a job anywhere else.
