    Elephant in the room!!

I can’t be the only person thinking enough is enough. I am sick of this industry thinking that cheating is ok. Time after time we have heard of trainers being warned, and the ones that are caught, a weak slap on the wrist. From milking shaking, blue magic, Operation Inca and what ever they are using now. When does it get to a point were some serious decisions are made, I have contacted Gary Woodham, Mike Gober, the Racing minister and animal welfare and nobody seems to care about what is going on. Personally I hate cheats, they are no better than thieves and rapists, and in no industry should it be allowed. Surely I can’t be the only one concerned that if nothing is done, there won’t be a industry for the future. Australia seem to have a zero tolerance for this, when are we going to grow a backbone and do the same. I would love some feedback on this?

    1963 NZ Cup.

I was there that day and watched the race from the inside of the track and liked Smokeaway which was paying 3pound odd for a place. Once the fire got going it became the omen bet and came down to 1pound 10 shillings for a place and ran third. A collect but not what I was expecting.

Just wondering, with the huge growth in trotting numbers of late, why are 2yo pacers divided into separate colts and fillies races yet 2yo trotters are mixed? At this point in time in the top rated 12, seven are fillies and there are ten of each in the top twenty so it's not as if it's weighted towards one sex.

  15. Reading the article on stuff this morning I think the industry is well aware, and catching and proving is the real issue. But agree that the cheats need to be banned for life, then maybe they will think twice. They are in effect stealing from many stakeholders including the poor old mug punters like myself. The article mentioned many names that have been involved in dodgy dealings over the years, but not about Mark Purdons digressions which I am not overly familiar with, so not sure about that one.

  31. It may be Grand National weekend but elsewhere the pace of the new Flat season is quickening with the first of the Guineas trials in France and Ireland. Yesterday saw the Djebel and the Imprudence, the trials for the 3-y-o colts and fillies over 1400m at Deauville. Unusually, the ground was Good - it's often Heavy for this meeting. That may have contributed to a couple of surprise results as FAST RAAJ outpointed PIMENTO in a Djebel which was run below standard and may be decent form. As for the Imprudence, this went to REINA MADRE who ran down SKY ANGEL in the final 20m. The previously unbeaten SEE THE ROSE was held in fourth and it may be she now needs a little further. Equally unusually, the opening Leopardstown meeting looks set to be run on quick ground - Good, Good to Firm in places. That's brought out some decent sized fields - 12 go in the Listed 2000 Guineas Trial over 1400m. MONAASIB is top rated and 3/1 favourite - he chased home HIGH DEFINITION in the Beresford last year but I'm not convinced 1400m on this quick track will suit. HOROSCOPE won a Curragh maiden the other day but how he'll cope with this quicker ground and very different track I don't know. POETIC FLARE was thought good enough to take his chance in the Dewhurst and he may just be the answer. The 1000 Guineas Trial is a Group 3 and sees the return of SHALE who beat PRETTY GORGEOUS twice on good ground and finished behind her twice on soft ground. I expect SHALE to win this and have a huge chance at Newmarket if the ground is quick. She's trained by Donnacha but Aidan relies on EMPRESS JOSEPHINE who won on debut at Naas. The problem I have is EMPRESS JOSEPHINE is fantastically bred - by Galileo out of Lillie Langtry - but that breeding screams 2400m not 1400m. It's also unseasonably quick ground at Longchamp for their opening meeting of the new season. The feature is the Group 2 Harcourt over 2000mfor the older horses. SKALLETI heads the weights and he returned with a nice win the other day. He's won on Good ground but GOLD TRIP and ECRIVAIN are serious opponents. GOLD TRIP was third in the Grand Prix de Paris and fourth in the Arc which just makes me think 2400m is his trip. I'm interested in ECRIVAIN over this trip on this ground.

So far in the 4yo rankings for the 2021 Jewels: 206 h&g listed as having raced this season with 31% withdrawals (exported/turned out etc) = 143 remaining 158 mares with 29% withdrawals (=112 remaining) 130 trotters with 11% withdrawals (=116) This suggests the current format and stakes are fair, though is tough for the trotting mares

    Harness jewels

Let’s be honest, I am a breeder but why would you go to the time and money to breed a trotter. By stats, the top young trotters come out of the yearling sales with the same owners. It doesn’t help when the same trainers keep winning as well, the game is on a lot of trouble especially when issues like Jesse Alford are not sorted out straight away. Wake up everyone!!, personally I am sick of it..

    Harness jewels

As an owner and breeder of trotters I don't mind 2yo races being for both sexes as the fillies do just as well as c&g at that age (just look at 2yo records). Also numbers are low for various reasons, including why go to all the expense and risk of getting a baby race fit in the NI when most races in the past ended up as non-totes. However, there is little justification for not splitting at least the 4yo trotters by sex at the Jewels. In the pacers 4yo rankings for the last Jewels there were heaps of defections with horses exported to Aussie whereas the pool of higher ranked trotters remained strong.

    Harness jewels

IMO its a historical thing.....when the Jewels began , young trotters were very low in numbers , in fact at most meetings there was usually approx 3 trotting races to every 6 to 9 pacing races. That's between 25% and 33%. Yes the tide seems to be turning , definitely this year in 2 yr old ranks. Only 2 years ago 2 yr old trotting races were usually down graded to Non-tote races for $2 ,000 stake cos lack of numbers ! In early days of Jewels the stakes needed to qualify for 2 yr old trot were very low. In addition trotting races usually attract less betting . So a combination of less horses ,less races ,and lower betting means less stakes . And though not relevant to Jewels ,standing starts attract less betting in particular Trot stands.

  45. Gruffy, Westwood seems to be tapering off in last few rounds. OLD (46) guy like him cannot sustain top form for a long stretch and agree that son not the best fit. The young girlfriend's pheromones would keep him focussed better! I was going to back Matsuyama initially but paused the bet, just like his backswing,.and have gone for Harman and Wallace. Consistently the most riveting sports event of the year IMO.

  46. On then to Saturday and 40 will run in the Grand National over 6850m. CLOTH CAP remains 4/1 favourite and both my fancy, MAGIC OF LIGHT, and @Red Rum's idea of a good bet, FARCLAS, have been backed. MAGIC OF LIGHT is now 16s from 20s and FARCLAS is 20s from 33s. Before the big race, there are three championship races on a strong final day card. The Mersey Hurdle is for the intermediate novices over 4000m. MY DROGO is a horse a lot of people have followed this year and he dotted up at Kelso last time. Connections swerved Cheltenham and we'll see if this was a wise move. BALLYADAM was no match for APPRECIATE IT at Cheltenham but this is a different race and I think the step up in trip will be a big help. Of the others, ADMIREL ran a shocker in the Albert Bartlett, DREAL DEAL relished the heavy midwinter ground and may not enjoy this quicker turf while MINELLA ALLEN bossed a couple of races in the north but this is a big step up in grade. The Maghull Chase is for the speedy novices over 3200m. Arkle winner SHISHKIN is 1/6 and that tells you all you need to know. The Stayers Hurdle over 4900m is a rematch of the Long Walk from before Christmas where PAISLEY PARK just ran down THYNE HILL in the final 50m with ROKSANA not far away in third. THYNE HILL was forced to miss Cheltenham while PAISLEY PARK was a gallant third in the World Hurdle and ROKSANA was third in the Mares Hurdle over 4000m. I think it will happen too quickly for PAISLEY PARK on this ground and while I like THYNE HILL a lot, I just wonder if going back up in trip on this flatter track will work for ROKSANA who would be my selection. 2019 World Hurdle winner LISNAGAR OSCAR fell at Cheltenham and while THIRD WIND won the Rendlesham at Haydock that wasn't a strong renewal. The 7 lbs mares allowance sways this in ROKSANA's favour for me. Selections for Saturday: Mersey Hurdle: BALLYADAM Maghull Chase: SHISHKIN Stayers Hurdle: ROKSANA Grand National: MAGIC OF LIGHT (each way)

  48. On then to the second day of the Aintree meeting and news overnight after further watering and a light shower, the ground remains Good to Soft, Good in places but the Mildmay course ground has eased noticeably with the going stick reading on the chase course down from 6.2 to 5.8 10 go in the 3200m Top Hurdle for the speedier novice jumpers. @Red Rumwill be pleased to see BELFAST BANTER, his winner in the County Hurdle, in the field but he won't get such big odds this time. Handicap form against the top novices raises a question as well. DUSART hasn't been seen since a smooth win at Newbury last November and you'd suspect he's been put away for this race. THIRD TIME LUCKI was sixth to BELFAST BANTER but gets a nice pull in the weights in this conditions race. HOUX GRIS was fourth in the juvenile handicap at Cheltenham and the winner of that went in again at Fairyhouse on Monday. ANY NEWS tipped up at Kelso last time but ran well at Cheltenham last autumn and his chances in an open if slightly sub-standard renewal. The lack of Irish challengers in that race is also seen in the Mildmay Chase over 5000m for the staying novices. CHANTRY HOUSE was a convincing winner of the Marsh at Cheltenham once ENVOI ALLEN had crashed out. This is 1000m further but should be fine - SHAN BLUE was 12 lengths behind that day but I fancy him to be closer. FIDDLERONTHEROOF chased home MONKFISH in the Brown Advisory, the Cheltenham equivalent of this race, but I think the quicker, flatter track won't help and I fear the same will be true for the huge horse that is THE BIG BREAKAWAY. The Marsh Chase isn't the same race as at Cheltenham - this is over 4000m and fills a gap for the intermediate chasers. POLITOLOGUE was thrashed 20 lengths by MIN in this two years ago but, as the saying goes, that was then and this is now. He won the Tingle Creek but was well held in the Ascot Chase. DASHEL DRASHER did me a big favour at Ascot in February but I doubt whether this is his track or his ground. FAKIR D'OUDAIRIES was taken out of a race at Fairyhouse on Monday and this consistent type chased home CHACUN POUR SOI in the Dublin Chase and ALLAHO in the Ryanair so will have every chance in this. MY idea of the winner is MASTER TOMMYTUCKER who has some decent form on a sound surface and ran a fine race in defeat to DASHEL DRASHER last time. I'm on at 5/1. The Sefton Hurdle over 5000m is the championship race for the staying novices. BRAVEMANSGAME was third to BOB OLINGER in the Ballymore at Cheltenham and the extra trip should hold no fears. OSCAR ELITE and STREETSOFDOYEN were second and third in the Albert Bartlett and I just wonder if they'll have the speed for this on a faster flatter track. Selections for Day Two: Top Hurdle: ANY NEWS (each way) Mildmay Chase: CHANTRY HOUSE Marsh Chase: MASTER TOMMYTUCKER Sefton Hurdle: BRAVEMANSGAME
