Stakes back to 14th
Chris Wood and 4 others reacted to shaneMcAlister for a topic
This paying to 14 is the greatest robbery (without a gun) of owners I have seen in a long time. With average runners of 11 per race, NZTR is not paying out for an overage of 3 runners or 6% of ADVERTISED stakes. NZTR have saved nearly 2 million this season alone. I personally think this is not right!!!5 points -

Possibly one of the only good initiatives they have come up with imo. I have said before I think the distribution maybe needs to be looked (particularly on Saturday i.e. why is running 14th worth more on a Saturday than a Thursday) at but the free racing for jockey payments is a very good initiative. Participation is also a very key factor in the sport that is considerably overlooked, particularly by those who like everything their own way! Let me guess those who want it changed are the same ones who wanted free racing gone, geniuses that lot.4 points -
The Oaks
d.burrow - Joan and 2 others reacted to uneasy for a topic
I don’t think the track was a disgrace but the tracks presented yesterday and during the Cup Meeting have not been as good as previously Over irrigated?? but now where near as bad as Riccarton has been recently My two favourite tracks are nothing like they used to be presented, the common factor OVER or Poor use of Irrigation systems On the flip side Wingatui and Ashburton tracks have been outstanding - they seem to have it right IMO3 points -

Baz (NZ) reacted to We're Doomed for a topic
I was just having a look at the Oaks which I didn't get to see yesterday. I don't think anyone has mentioned it here. Llanacord looked very unlucky, with a clear run she would have been right in it. Admittedly she did have a nice run all the way, except in the straight. That track looked a bit rough. We just don't seem to be able to present the pristine racing surfaces that most of the Aussie clubs come up with.1 point -

Night Trots
JJ Flash reacted to We're Doomed for a topic
The discussion about Victoria Park on the Westport thread got me thinking about the state of night trots in NZ. Interesting that we once had eight night trotting venues in NZ: Claudelands, Hutt Park and Victoria Park have long since closed, Forbury is about to shut down, and Auckland can hardly survive much longer. That will leave just Cambridge, Manawatu and Addington. Manawatu may well come into its own. Just a pity one of only three new trotting venues will be in a region with no horses. It is a sad demise really when all logic would suggest that an exciting form of night time entertainment, often outside the major centres, should be all the rage in this day and age. At the same time we have clubs abandoning their all weather tracks to race on the grass during the summer months. A return to the past in many respects. Certainly interesting times for harness racing.1 point -
Well, I can't match @Red Rum for tipping prowess - superb spot on BELFAST BANTER by the way. MY book for the week ended up as follows: Day One: 1.20: Supreme Novices Hurdle: METIER (£10 win SP) - LOST 1.55: Arkle Novices Chase: ALLMANKIND (£5 win SP) - LOST 2.30: Handicap - ALNADAM (£5 each way @ 14s) – LOST (7th, my bookie paid down to 6th) 3.05: Champion Hurdle - SHARJAH (£10 each way @10s) – 2nd – returned £32 3.40: Mares Hurdle - ROKSANA (£20 win @4s) - LOST 4.50: Handicap: REMASTERED (£5 each way @12s) – LOST Staked: £75 Returns: £32 Loss on Day: £43 Day Two: 1.20 Ballymore Novices Hurdle - BRAVEMANSGAME £20 win at 5/1 - LOST 1.55: Brown Advisory Novices Chase - ECLAT DE RIRE £2.50 each way at SP - LOST 3.05: Champion Chase - NUBE NEGRA £10 each way at SP – 2nd at 11/1 – returned £32 3.40: Cross Country Chase - DEFI DES CARRES £2.50 each way at SP – LOST Staked: £50 Returns: £32 Loss on day: £18 Total Loss after Day 2: £61 Day Three: 1.20: Marsh Novices Chase - SHAN BLUE £5 each way at SP - LOST 2.30: Ryanair Chase - IMPERIAL AURA £10 win at 8/1 - LOST 3.05: World Hurdle - FLOORING PORTER £10 each way at SP – WON at 12/1, returned £164 Staked: £40 Returns; £164 Profit on Day: £124 Total Profit after Day 3: £63 Day Four: 1.20: Triumph Hurdle - QUILIXIOS - £10 win at 7/2 – WON, returned £45 2.30: Albert Bartlett Hurdle - ADRIMEL - £2.50 e/w at SP - LOST 3.05: Gold Cup - CHAMP - £10 win at 5/1 - LOST 3.40: Foxhunters - BILLAWAY - £10 win at SP - LOST 4.15: Mares Chase - COLREEVY - £10 win at 4/1 – WON, returned £50 Staked: £45 Returns: £95 Profit on Day: £50 Total Profit at end of Festival: £113 In the end, it all worked out fine. Indeed, if the three seconds had gone in I'd have been well ahead but that's still a 50% return over the week and I can't really complain. Best decision I made was to go in stronger on FLOORING PORTER than I had intended.1 point

Its tracks in general Michael there seems to be a set against having a good track they all seem to want to turn up as Dead or in the old days an easy track makes little or no sense to me..but what's new most of what the clowns running the show do these days makes no sense.1 point -

Tauhei Notts reacted to shaneMcAlister for a topic
Pre COVID there were $10k races with winner getting $6,200. Now these races on average are $9.4K and winner getting $5,400. It’s the owner (and a lot of breeders and trainers are owners too) that is having less money go back into the game. Extra races, we are splitting $10k races (not $100k races) and there are actually over 100 less races than last year. I would have thought it was the NZTR’s role to pay the money given to the nztr from the tab for prize money to owners. Not save for rainy days, some people still don’t realise it but these are rainy days1 point -

Nothing would have beaten her yesterday...fell out of the barriers, wide out of the straight...hit the front before acceptances and still hung on...I think she was clearly the best filly in the race on the day...but I guess time will tell.Once again just my opinion FWIW.1 point -

we have a bunch of muppets managing the tracks and wanting a Dead surface...it is total BS and needs to be addressed...there is no planning around weather it seems robots are in charge these days...that track was a disgrace for a major race day. I personally dont think anything would have beaten her yesterday...I think she is one out of the top drawer...she had to be used a few times during the run and still was way superior...JMO.1 point -

Change Of Trainer ?
Baz (NZ) reacted to Ponderosa8 for a topic
I know if a horse has accepted in a race, you can go to the TAB site and click on the "Extended Form" button and then click on the horse name and the info will be shown there under NOTES. Not sure where else to find it though.1 point -
Sorry guys you haven't thought this through. Most of the payouts after weigh ins go 200, 200 ,200 and on to 14th place. but say the average field size is 11 then there is $600 not paid out say in a day of 9 races that $5400. So NZTR have plenty of money for an extra race if they have to split a field of noms. But the real reason is they are wanting to build reserves. Desperately wanting to see TAB get its act together. But its at the cost of Owners and licencees1 point

Distribute the stake money 65% the winner, 20% second, 10% third and 5% fourth. Horses placed fifth through to tenth get their entry fees and riding fee refunded. The savings in Goods and Services Tax would be huge. Consider the split to be 62.5% first and 2.5% for fifth for races of $50,000 or more, in which case it would be 6th to tenth get their expenses refunded. The above system is too simple for the powers that be to comprehend, and guess what the trainer's percentage would be if that trainer was good enough to train a horse to come 9th when the tenth horse was scratched. Sweet F.A., and F.A. is not the Football Association.1 point -

Longest home straight
Gruff reacted to tasman man for a topic
You need to get out more WD. Pukekohe track is not good viewing.....best watched on TV screens. The horses run partly obscured by numerous white running rails , the angle of the course varies from the grandstand.....all influenced by car track and then there is the long straight. Difficult often to line up the finish line. The size of the place , the closeness to horse population and the stabling etc mean it should be one of the best places to race........bit IMO it ain't ! Auckland harness could end up out that way.....the training facilities very good .1 point -
Longest home straight

I think the longest straight run on any New Zealand racecourse is from the 1600 start at Matamata, where the horses run 785 metres in a straight line to the first turn.1 point -

Interesting how fast Haub's call was. Don't recall him being that quick but time does bend your memory somewhat. George is a bit slower I think. Well done to Bazza and Orphanpete, was a fun day with lots of 1sts and 2nds and a few 3rds that were almost quinellas. Thanks Scooby and Ponderosa (and others) for running the comp. Yes the Oaks fav was a bit silly but they don’t win everything and I did have 2nd and 3rd so not beating myself up.
