Noms out today for the only grass meetings this season in the north. 2 meetings both of 5 races only (dual code meetings) and all races for pacers. Yet another kick in the guts for the squaregaiters who the suits believe are only useful when they need meetings shored up due to shortage of pacers. I also believe next seasons tentative dates have been released with no improvement in the grass track holiday race situation - e.g. Taranaki yet again NO meetings. It's time for all interested parties to vehemently complain to these so called executives of the sport that they need to sharpen up their act or simply resign. They are elected there to do a job and not to put contentious items in the w.p.b. To survive the sport needs people of fortitude not a bunch of wimps.4 points

After the last race at Westport one should have rung the integrity line and reported it, no bloody way those horses should have started, just skinning the punters and leaving a very sour taste in one's mouth, was very tempting to talk to stipe as he wasn't far from where I was sitting, but thought I may get barred if I did so.2 points

I see the RIU spoke to him advisedly after R 6 at Westport. How many times is that. All talk no action where Lamb is concerned IMHO2 points

HB in trouble
THE TORCH reacted to We're Doomed for a topic
No one seems to have noticed the HB New Years meeting in trouble. 58 noms for the entire programme. They have left open races with 3 and 4 noms. In the SI they would instantly delete those races because of insufficient interest. Seems to be different rules for the NI. That meeting has always struggled for horses and yet nothing has ever been done about it. Waikouaiti got moved off NY's day, perhaps HB should be next to go.1 point -

Bit of rain by looks of it leading into Monday but Omoto drains ok. Pitman yard miss Omoto , Tyler usually has plenty so thats a shame , if Clotworthy and few others don't bother now 3 meetings on Coast , Omoto i fear might be thin . A shame as three cracking days there last year . Stammers must send his usual suspects or it's not the Coast without them. Hope Myers sends his usual big team as been trying to get a line on his likely candidates up North , Mondarani and Fisherman's Bridge I'd be interested in if they front up in something.1 point

Excellent Boxing Day Racing

I backed Jamie Richards in the first race and the ninth race. Second & third. He won every race in between. I thought on the way home, that I had backed Surfers Paradise in the Wanganui Guineas and the AJC Derby. He won every race in between.1 point -

Imho, if you ran 10 races and in all of them a jockey placed his horse on the rails about 5 pairs back, then in at least 50% of the time, the horse will be blocked for a run at a crucial time and lessen its chances to win. If you watch JMac ride, he predominately has his horses at least one of the fence before the turn and even wider. This gives him the opportunity to allow his horses to have a uninterrupted run in the straight. Riding in the UK teaches you that. K McEvoy another one.1 point -
So I read Q has only posted once in December. Hundy has gone extremely quiet without his "disinformation source". Silence sure is golden. Just over 3 weeks and it'll all be officially over, although the vast majority of the world accepts it was over first week of November. Even Q accepts he's dead in the water.1 point

Yeah was unlucky in the Thorndon, Herbie Dyke and Zabeel Classic. The day he won in the Captain Cook he sat 3 wide. He's the best horse in these races, ride him like it and give him clear air. Frustrating to see a good horse keep getting beaten because of pilot misjudgement.1 point

My view having rewatched. Bosson does NOT check behind him, but he pulls the horse back half a width towards the rail, to cover anyone sneaking up the inside. And they is why he is the champ. It's ..competitive riding, shall we say.1 point -

Tuesday sees more Grade 1 in England and Ireland. Newbury has to survive a morning inspection with the threat of frost and snow The Challow Hurdle over 4000m has drawn six quality entries and was won last year by THYNE HILL so it's a big pointer to future stars. Horses often come to this race via a Grade 2 at Sandown at the beginning of December and that's the route for STAR GATE who is unbeaten in three runs. He's obviously very good and the forecast soft going should suit him more than BRAVEMANSGAME whose two hurdles wins have been on much faster ground. THE GLANCING QUEEN was eighth in the Cheltenham Bumper and was some 20 lengths behind APPRECIATE IT that day. He won on hurdling debut and could be improving and will love the trip and ground. He's my idea of the winner but both DOES HE KNOW and WILDE ABOUT OSCAR come into the race in good form. The final day at Leopardstown has two Grade 1 races - the Neville Hotels Chase is for the staying novices over 4800m. MONKFISH won the Albert Bartlett for the staying novice hurdlers at Cheltenham and looked to have made a smooth transition to chasing on his debut but this is a bigger test as you would expect. LATEST EXHIBITION was only beaten a neck that day and has won one of his two chasing starts. CONFLATED has claims but with the stable in red hot form MONKFISH looks the one. The Matheson Hurdle over 3200m is the Irish version of the Christmas Hurdle and with EPATANTE turned over at Kempton, the Champion Hurdle looks wide open. ABRACADABRAS and SAINT ROI were first and second in a pulsating Morgiana at Punchestown last time and back on this sharper track and on better ground you'd think SAINT ROI might be able to reverse the places. ASPIRE TOWER beat ABRACADABRAS at Down Royal but whether the Triumph Hurdle runner-up can follow up remains to be seen. SHARJAH was runner up to EPATANTE at Cheltenham but has had a long break since a couple of average runs in the summer.1 point

With Chepstow lost to waterlogging (rescheduled for January 9th), Ireland took centre stage on Sunday with two Grade 1 races at Leopardstown where the ground had eased to soft after overnight rain. The Paddy's Rewards Club Chase was the Grade 1 for the speedier chasers over 3200m and CHACUN POUR SOI kept on track for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham with an emphatic win. He had looked far from ready when winning at Cork on seasonal debut and this was still not the finished product but he jumped and travelled so much better on the better ground. NOTEBOOK chased throughout but was always second best with Arkle winner PUT THE KETTLE ON well held in third. CHACUN POUR SOI is now 2/1 favourite for the Champion Chase and it's going to take a good one to beat him. The Future Champions Novice Hurdle over 3200m looked a match on paper between APPRECIATE IT for the all-conquering Mullins stable and BALLYADAM for Gordon Elliott. Mullins had bossed Boxing Day and continued in the same vein with APPRECIATE IT coming home by nine lengths. This was an impressive performance from a horse who knows his business - he had been expected to win the Champion Bumper at the Festival but was turned over by stable mate FERNY HOLLOW who has himself been ruled out of the rest of the season by injury. APPRECIATE IT now heads the Supreme Novices Hurdle market and while I think second IRASCIBLE will come on a lot for this I think his future lies over fences next season.1 point

What's the nature of the problem? Is there too much racing for the horse population at this time of year? The ground is a Dead 5 so shouldn't be an issue. Is it a quality vs quantity question? Given there are many more slow horses than fast ones, races for slow horses should attract more entries. The problem is punters don't just want wide-open low-grade handicaps. There has to be some variety and if that means a 3-runner race, doesn't mean it can't be interesting. Is the problem one of race planning - too many of the same kind of race in the same region - I see NZ runs three meetings only rarely and perhaps it can only really sustain two on any day?1 point

Another fiasco in last race, some didn't hear the false start and done a lap, seemed like a very quick vet check, and they were off again, one of those runners did win the race, but I thought all should have scratched, don't know where the clerk of the course was positioned, obviously not in the right position or having a day out in the sun, what's the point of even having one, admittedly it was windy and the whistle wasn't heard, anyone else have any thoughts on this1 point
