  1. The fallout from Tuesday’s shocking New Zealand Cup start is building. Horsemen went a short term fix and a long term solution. https://www.lincolnfarms.co.nz/stories/horsemen-weigh-options-in-fallout-to-shocking-cup-start-everyone-baying-for-lambs-blood/

  2. I see Wiremu Pinn listed for some rides on Saturday at Tauranga , noticed he had been riding at the trials , great to see this young talent back raceday . Anyone know who he is signed with ? Good luck to the young fella , hopefully fulfills the huge promise that he exhibited when in New Plymouth .

  3. Yes, the starter is employed by the clubs (well I think he still is) but he has to be licensed. Licences are issued by HRNZ (not the clubs) so they have their "say" who the clubs can employ.

  4. We obviously have pro and anti All Stars. The real point of the debate is that some horses got favours at the start and others were badly hindered due to a very poor exhibition by the starter, who unfortunately has a history of poor technique especially in major races. Next time it could be All Stars horses given a disservice but this not the point. HRNZ must see this and by not reacting shows incompetence on their part. An enquiry into both the starting of the race and also into why the race officials did not open an investigation with the JCA into the possibility of declaring non runner(s) must surely be undertaken

  5. But how was it it the fault of the All Stars that people are crying about...its the starter who needs firing for this...you are going after the wrong people...maybe the green eyed monster is rearing its ugly head again...

  9. Yes agree, I just looked Navitas, it has had a portion edited out shame on you HRNZ for allowing this in an effort to make it look better than it was if the start wasn't as bad as everyone has seen why edit your own Stipes video of the start, enough people have seen it already anyway and makes HRNZ look guilty as...... Overcheck what I said was a comment 'it don't make him right just cos he's a stipe' not you said he was right..... Cheers Iraklis

    This is BIG!!!! abbr

FYI, I am Neil Miller. I edit the New Zealand Thoroughbred Owners Bulletin and am unpaid for that. I am an Honorary Member of Counties Racing Club. I was born on Pukekohe hill and have many relatives there. My forebears are in the cemetery and I see their graves. A paternal forebear was a founding Committeeman on The Franklin Racing Club and the Franklin Electric Power Board, also President of the Growers Assn. I have a fond association with Ellerslie as I was first chippy (apprentice) to work on the Ascot Stand. Can you please tell us who you are and we could try to see how we can help you. You seem to be in a dark place. Meds are important in some issues

  13. Surely they will replace the starter for Show Day. Addington cannot afford further bad publicity with their biggest Trotting Race the Dominion to be run.

  14. What a complete cop out by Ydgren. Do these arrogant idiots not realize the damage they're doing to our industry. Hundreds of young people on course enjoying themselves today and the start of the countries biggest race becomes harness racings biggest shame. I wonder how many of these young people will stick to Riccarton from now on? Time for some unity against these know all's with their obvious conflicts of interest. I know there's people in our industry that are capable of making changes to the top, so lets get to it... come on people!!!

    Cup Day Thoughts

    (1) Green said it was in harness racing’s interests that a review was held immediately. “There don’t seem to be any rules and these guys are killing the game. Why would you bet on a race like that again? “There was a huge amount of money bet on the race and most of it was on us. “The game is in enough trouble without this going on.” Ray Green … reluctant to venture south again with Copy That for a standing start unless changes are made.Green said the experience had soured him on a return south any time soon. “It’s disappointing because it’s expensive to come down here. “I’ll be very reluctant to come down and race in a standing start unless they do something about this. “I’m not saying we would have won but our chance was extinguished in the first ten metres, along with the others alongside us. (2) But our investigations reveal Lamb, crucially, did not have a good side-on view of the horses which enabled him to best see their comparative speed and positions. (3) Im not sure what is worse in these statements from head RIU person on the day. Ydgren confirmed there was no set rule governing standing starts. “But we have put together a document that moves all the standing start rules into the regulations to provide a lot more uniformity nationwide and we hope HRNZ adopts it. “It doesn’t stipulate one particular method. The only way to stop unfair starts is to make a rule that every horse must stand but that hasn’t been favoured in the past. “My preferred option is that we don’t tie the starters to one method. If the whole field can walk up in unison, and no horse impedes another, why wouldn’t you let them go? “I wouldn’t like to remove the discretion of the starter so he can get as many horses away as safely and fairly as possible.” On a postive note Purdon and Co won 3-4 grp 1's and didnt have a runner in the other On the other side of the coin R Dunn lined up 26 for no wins so it was clearly not their day.

    Show Day Disaster???

This from an earlier Lincoln Farm article “I was sickened watching it because we worked so hard to get the right procedures in place before the showcase races. “It was very disappointing and so unfair on the connections of a number of horses.” Now, as the inevitable post mortems are held, and punters who bet more than $1.5 million on the race cry foul, Barron and his fellow horsemen are weighing up their options on what to do next. “Everyone is baying for blood. I just want it to not happen again. I’m reluctant to blame the starter entirely but no one can believe the horses were called out of line the first time when a nearby starter’s assistant could have sorted it.” Ok folks so the next potential disaster is Fridays Dominion 3200 Metre Stand What could possibly go wrong , could history repeat??

    Racing Minister

Word is another Ministerial Inquiry could be happening soon and hopefully this time a little more transparent and carried out by people with some clues. Round 2 coming up hopefully. Heads still need to roll and changes made before the Industry is back on track. The last lot put in to make changes unfortunately had the no idea.

  20. This is half the problem - speak out about an official especially the stipes and you are marked for life. Total arseholes

  21. So why don't the clubs kick his sorry arse to the curb? And why is Ydren so gutless. This is not a once thing, it's been going on for years. Total incompetence time after time and nothing done by the stipes. Mind you the horsemen don't help either but using the starters incompetence and getting an advantage at the starts by judging or forcing the starters hand (which is really what Mark P did, and good on him for showing not just us but the public in general what a clown he is). He must have a hide as thick as a work ox to be able to front up as a starter knowing everyone concerned (except Ydren) looks at him as being useless

  23. I completely agree that the game has for years had integrity issues and.it has affected particpation both in terms of ownership and gambling. Poor governance starts at the top and.only filters one way. As for Ray Green anyone surprised that he was not being chased by RIU for some of his post race comments.

  24. Whatever you want to call it, this crap happens all the time, and people are absolutely sick of it. If you can't see that the industry has never been cleaned up because of the slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket attitude .. then it will continue like that. Also try telling Ray Green Copy That was afforded every chance and was on the same playing field as the first 3.

    Cup Day Thoughts

I enjoyed the racing watching on my MacBook at home. The Cup start was a shambles as expected but I backed Ashley Locaz for a place so happy. I had some good collects during the day... My first two bets both broke and I thought I was in for a bad day but then came Vintage Cheddar. Alister Black you beauty. I was in profit from that race on and I kept accumulating. A bit to spend on show day! Good luck with Show Day punting everyone...

  39. Sandown has always been part of the Spring Carnival hence its inclusion, it was a genuine mistake that I initially forgot to count the Sandown races and there was absolutely no intention to give anyone a leg up... so who is the "someone" you mention. We could always throw in the G3 from Newcastle this Saturday too.

    Cup Week Maidens

We have a sad lack of interest in preserving the status or even the existence of historical events in NZ, and especially in the SI. So many races that used to have some significance have been allowed to lapse. And it isn't even about money, just disinterest from the industry as a whole. The Haldon Plate was a maiden race for 2yos, just had a normal stake, but it used to be a prestigious race to win, purely because of tradition. Likewise Wingatui had the Mclean Stakes which was a significant 2yo race. The Brabazon, like the Haldon a Hunt Club race, has disappeared. The SI Champion Stakes, and many others. And none of these races have been replaced by exciting new events like an Everest. Unlike Australia, NZ doesn't recognize champion horses from the past in race names. Auckland RC is probably the best in this respect with Sunline, Uncle Remus and a few others all recognised. The SI is terrible in recognising its champions. No Showgate, Grey Way, or even Phar Lap. I think it's all just because of a lack of interest, passion and enthusiasm, and an indication that those running the industry these days have no history in it. They have probably never heard of Grey Way so you can hardly expect them to suggest naming a race after him.

    This is BIG!!!! abbr

Nerula said, “Legs, the big issue is the ATC will overpower the rest of NZ. I could see top trainers taking boxes at Puke for an easy run to Ellerslis's 40? meetings a year”. If this happened because they were smarter, more professional, had 20 year Plan (true) that they stuck to and adjusted if needed to suit the times, etc etc, then why not? You can’t bring people or Organisations “down” to a lower level. We should be having a very strong upper level of Clubs. That can only better the “smaller feeder Clubs”. Australia do it very successfully and have a multi tiered Racing Club system. City, supported by a strong Country Club system with TAB meetings, then the non-TAB Clubs and Picnic Clubs. All feed from each other. I wouldn’t be scared Nerula - I’d be encouraging strength at the top and applauding it. You only have to look at the contrasting Clubs of Ellerslie and Avondale. Chalk and Cheese. And Avondale could have been merged with Ellerslie 10 years ago (or more) if they took their heads out of the sand. And don’t forget who gave Counties about $2m to go towards lights and training track. Ellerslie.

    Cup Week Maidens

They're in niggly places on the calendar. This coming up one should be 1400 to become more attractive for milers that skipped Hastings or have had a freshen since then. They can use it as a lead up for the Captain Cook and then maybe the Zabeel. The up and running lot can use the Couplands if they really need a mile. Currently the two clash too much imo. The NZ Japan trophy is in no man's land being shortly after the G1 WFA season through summer and the best horses are tired. The switch to SW+P for that race while the Easter (the most convenient target race after it) has been changed back to handicap simultaneously means that smart trainers with lower rated horses don't want to risk the large rating penalty that inherently comes with SW+P racing. The South Island black type races probably have bigger fields because of their scarcity. They are almost all handicaps so many have a go with a lighter weight, while the highly rated horses have no other option but to run unless they want to go up north. The concept of scarcity, in my opinion, should be employed all over the country. Fewer really big races mean that everyone has to converge for them and it creates more depth which we are sorely lacking. But, organising a downgrading and better flowing black type calendar would need the co-operation of NZTR and a lot of clubs, and it wouldn't take much unco-operation to throw the whole thing off and we'd be back at the start

    This is BIG!!!! abbr

Well it would have to come with re-engagement of the populace with emphasis on the young. Hard to do if you are broke. But with money and a clear plan------ (I see re-introduction of Trackside and Racefields back on the agenda at TR.Make a wish!) Legs, the big issue is the ATC will overpower the rest of NZ. I could see top trainers taking boxes at Puke for an easy run to Ellerslis's 40? meetings a year. I think Waikato may feel the cold draught unless they go Greefields and make a hub. Probably needs a hub at Palmy and another at ChCh. Whats left are HB Carnivals and Country meetings.

  49. Especially against the Wallabies. Aussies can live with a loss against NH sides but they hate like hell getting beaten by the AB’s. They don’t sleep for days when they lose! They knew they had a good record in Brisbane and they picked their best side and played with passion and aggression. How Brad Weber does not get a start ahead of TJP is a mystery. He is much quicker with his delivery and altho TJP is still a very good half back, Weber is like a Jack Russell from the base of the scrum and his passing is electric. Foster has not started well and only has a 50% winning rate. Kiwis will soon call for his scalp if losses continue.
