  1. I read Berri's succinct piece yesterday morning and it has troubled me for 24 hours. We cannot see any hope of racing progressing in our country whilst the Jackson Street, Petone outfit is run by clowns who know as much about racing as the average Morrinsville Mormon. Those clowns cannot differentiate between a novice hurdle at Market Razen and the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe. None of the clowns would know how many teats there are on a mare's udder. Showing racing from the back blocks of Uruguay merely demeans our betting markets. This matter is depressing me. And Judith Collins talks about getting better appointees. Leave the choice of appointees to the Clubs. They are better at sorting the oats from the chaff.

  2. We shouldn't laugh at the NZ TAB ....I mean the new website betting platform only cost them a bargain basement price of $50,000,000 with annual running costs of $17,000,000 ! This state of the art punting software should automatically predict fuckin winners at that cost! Yet here we are....and it can't even tell us why Lee Somervell gelded Stradivarius 4 years ago before sending him to the Northern Hemisphere this year....where they grew back?

  3. I was looking at the fields for Fontainebleu and wondered why all the chestnut colts born in 2016 got gelded. It is weird. Every starter is a four year old gelding!

  4. Yes, this is the result when you just want more and more product in the system without caring at all about the quality. Agree its worse than nothing.

  5. MB, Probabeel and Advantage all wound up to win Million and still got that enthusiasm and ability, that's a seriously good training effort . None though within a furlong of Sunline achievements on world stage but not many horses are within a furlong of that legends achievements.

    Probabeel

So pleased I have an O'Reilly mare from this great Waikato family which was served only last week.Probabeel is in my mind the best NZ mare racing at the moment.the Lindsays deserve such luck as their investment in NZ breeding and racing is outstanding.

  7. I don't think the TAB give a rat's arse about the service .. and then you hear Popplewell saying " Now you're in the game " .. what a load of you know what

  8. I think the question of G1 wins should be “outside NZ”. Sunline won on the World stage multiple times and there is “no” comparison between the G1 wins of Sunline and Melody Belle. No comparison whatsoever. The Randwick Mile win under her big weight will never be Forgotten in my mind. She was a freak.

  9. Early days in the North, but this fella is hitting his straps earlier than his sire and grand sire. Could be a bit special.

Looks a bit like normal service has resumed with Spankem and Self Assured running 1-2 in the big race on Friday night. Thought Spanken went huge given it did all the donkey work and was resuming after a decent break. Its usually about now they roll out the good one's as Cup week approaches although they will not get it all their own way. Greg Greg

  11. They're busting their balls to try at get this Rugby Championship up and running, but as a spectator it's hard to get very excited about it. It's coming into summer; it's a post World Cup year; it's a "Covid year" where local competitions have reclaimed the limelight; the Boks look like they'll be well underdone.....etc etc. Seems to me like we should just be saying "Glad we got a bit of local rugby"; then pulling out the cricket bats and beach towels and hoping for better in 2021.

    Probabeel

Whether it is 10-12 horses or 20-25 it is an extrordinary effort with that size string (that I was unaware of).

  13. I also rate Sunline & Probabeel ahead of Melody Belle on the international stage. But for any horse to win 11 GR.1's would 100% place them into history books as one of the best ! .....Melody Belle is certainly that

  16. He's been confused with the horse of same name here by looking at notes . I've noticed it happens a bit with name double ups . John Gosden has had a few yards in a couple of countries but never trained in France either . A right good old mess really .

  19. So I'll take it that the yes was to being a member of the Greens because the transcripts are daming. When you have a group of people having a discussion about the merits of racing, and the green members are earnestly discussing whether or not children should be exposed to horse racing because it's cruel to animals, then I'd say we who do like racing have an issue. When those same members, whilst derogatorily discussing the merits of gambling on horses, support the notion that the handbrake be put on racing so that at least it can't expand during those members' watch, then I'd say we have a problem. The first Bill put forward was the result of Labours and the Greens attitude to racing. Dean did the stupid thing of trying to sell it because it was trash. National and NZ First select committee members then pulled it back to the current middle ground. NZ First had to do it because it was Winnie's watch brief and had he not, he would have gone down in the annuls of being the biggest bullshitter on the planet. But it was Labour and Greens Bill first. So despite having a declared conflict of interest, and despite calling me a bullshitter, (which I am not), you're talking crap. IF you really care about racing and don't give a toss about anything else, then you would vote either National or Act. National's racing policy isn't so bad. It's a commercial approach which is not what has been demonstrated by either Labour or the Greens.

  20. Not so sure about your Chinese theory. Ellerslie tried that. Crowd was so large it blocked the freeway from the city to Ellerslie track! It took 2 hours! Had Dragon train on course, free betting voucher for everyone, Prime Minister came along etc. only one problem - the tote barely moved! They spent their free bet voucher, ate the free dim sums, watched the dragon parade then went home. Things were as dim as they sim after that!

  21. Tourists will return one day - of that I'm certain. Your country (and mine) relies too heavily on international travel for it to be otherwise. To be honest, the UK doesn't do any better - if you walk into any London Hotel you won't find any information about horse race meetings but if you want to visit all the tourist attractions you'll have all the information you need. At the top hotels (Savoy, Ritz, Corinthia etc) the Concierge would sort all that including transport to and from the course if need be and that's fine if you are a wealthy owner but the average visiting punter has much less chance. A number of courses in and around London are near railway stations (Sandown, Kempton, Plumpton, Lingfield, Ascot to name but five) and there used to be a combined rail/racing ticket where if you went to the track by train and produced your ticket at the gate, you got discounted admission. That doesn't really apply at a lot of NZ meetings where there's no admission so the inducement has to be for those getting punters to and from the races (bus companies, taxi firms). The Club could hire a coach to pick up from nearby towns - get some more punters in, eating, drinking and wagering and the thing pays for itself. Every regional tourist centre should be pushing the idea of a day at the races and, as I said, offer some discounted food and drink vouchers for international visitors ("foreign" money coming in to the local racing economy is better than recycling what's already there). After all, a few $20 losing quinellas and the whole industry will be on a better financial footing (perhaps). Without wishing to make an overtly racist point, the Chinese gamble like heroes - get a coachload of Chinese tourists to fetch up to Taupo, Riccarton or Avondale, get them some cheap food and all the gambling opportunities going and it's all good money for the Club and for the industry.

  22. Good stuff Stodge....it relies on local Racing Clubs actually getting off their arses and promoting their own meetings.....how hard is it to put together a calendar of dates with the major races outlined...?? Wouldn’t be an expensive exercise to provide these flyers to Hotels/Motels in the area. As for Tourists......until Her Majesty decides when the borders can re open, and that might not be this year, we are reliant on locals only.

  23. Stodge, your comments are very much appreciated. Any other site would have a paywall around writing of your quality.
