  1. We're Doomed

11 races at Ashburton today (and they could easily have run 12) and 12 races at Timaru two weeks ago, all for $10,000 stakes. And yet only enough horses for 8 races at Wingatui and Riccarton for mostly $30,000 stakes. Obviously the stakes allocation is all wrong, and means nothing to most trainers. Can someone explain to me how spending $15m? odd on an all weather track in the SI will resolve all or any of these anomalies? You wouldn't trust this current lot to organise a piss up in a brewery, and yet we are happy to let then play with $15m to build a new track. And they will just walk away when they stuff it all up. If this was an industry that the general public cared about the media would be all over the staggering level of incompetence. As it is, no one really cares and mismanagement is just going to be allowed to continue until it totally destroys the industry. It is incredibly sad, but to some extent the industry deserves what it is allowing to happen. NZTR must be as amazed as anyone with what they have been allowed to get away with virtually without complaint.

You people don't seem to realise this has been happening in the SI for years. The reason people think SI form is so inconsistent is because horses are hardly ever racing over the distance they prefer, in the class they prefer and after the ideal gap they prefer. And it is why the same horses race for $30,000 one week and $10,000 the next week. They just have to take a start whenever they can. As I understand it, it is considered much more efficient for the industry to hold fewer meetings regardless of horse numbers. Somehow that generates more profit (loses less money). Apparently it will all come right when we have all weather tracks. There will be some incredibly bright young chap at NZTR who has worked all of this out. He won't have ever actually been to a race meeting and has no interest in horses, but he is really good at computers and has worked out that this is by far the best way for the industry to proceed. Actual horses and owners are quite incidental to the operation of the industry and everything would go much smoother without either of them.

I was one of many Southlanders at the NZTR roadshow in Invercargill last week. Bernard and Jackson spoke about a few things, one being, that punters want the consistency the synthetic track will bring. Kelvin Tyler, Steve Blair-Edie, Jo Gordon and Ellis Winsloe all spoke clearly and strongly against the synthetic track at Riccarton, citing the damage it would do to South Island racing, race programming ie they need Oamaru and Timaru to stay, and funding the on-going maintenance costs of the synthetic etc etc. Everybody else who spoke was against it too (except maybe one, and I don't know what he was even on about). Bernie said their concerns were noted. I don't think the southern participants could be accused of not complaining, but they're probably the easiest to ignore. http://www.theoptimist.site/gallop-south-calls-for-justice-through-constitutional-change/ http://www.theoptimist.site/riccartons-synthetic-track-debate-heats-up-as-roadshow-heads-south/ Jo Gordon said no Southland trainers would move their base to Riccarton.

  6. Exactly this should be a base salary with provision for bonuses upon certain KPI's being attained , Others from a business back ground would suggest not . Stops another shiny arse from coming in and just counting his wedge . If they are passionate and have any real ability then they will comfortably achieve the top end of any contract .

  10. Well that would be a disaster for Racing.Winston is the best Racing Minister ever and every racing enthusiast needs to give their Party Vote to Winstons NZ First.

  11. Why have TAB NZ appointed an International Recruitment Agency to select someone for this position? Surely an organisation of this size would have a competent personnel department to do this job and save a six figure fee? So much for cost cutting.

  13. Winston sold the majority of voters down the drain last time! A number of racing supporters are still farmers, Winston going with Labour and the Green's has created a nightmare for farming. I gave him my party vote last time. He's had 3 years to "save" racing, did nothing for the first 2, but let the government put the boot into farming. If Labour get back in we'll be going broke paying shiney arse consultant's for consents, when they have no practical idea about our land, there won't be any spare dollars to race horses!!

The programming is crazy. The handicapping of horses maybe more so. There is so few horses rated over 80 now that the open handicaps and higher rating races will be poor attended affairs in two months. There is a congestion of horses rated between 65 and 70. NZTR and Tab are seeing turnover growths and punting this down to big fields etc. I would put it down to the following: No sporting events to attend and attract money no overseas holidays no kids sport government lolly money built up penetration from racing closed down pub nights cancelled

  20. Sadly for the Racing Industry Peters enthusiasm for horse racing only appears once every 3 years when political donations are required. He is full of it. Labour will govern on their own so even if by a miracle Peters gains re=entry into the political arena he won't be needed.

If someone took a video it will probably find its way onto YouTube. I note recent Cambridge jumpouts are on YouTube however we need an online facility where the stables can feed the names of the horses competing.

  23. TAB size is 400 employees and $450M revenue. The Salvation Army has 3000 employees although some spread around the Pacific Islands. Nevertheless its high time people realized that the TAB is on;y a medium sized company in NZ and would rank small to medium in USA. Could we inquire how much Salvation Army CEO is paid and divide it by an eighth.

Only banging my head on the wall here, but I've never understood why NZ racing doesn't cut its cloth to fit. i.e match the stakes to the races required to get the game going properly. So if that means 7k maidens so be it until it can justify increasing the stakemoney, at the moment we race for an unsustainable amount because certain persons moan about it but then we all end up moaning about the Calendar , programming and handicapping of which none of it will come right if you can find the right balance with stake money etc.

  28. So how much is the CEO going to be paid? And who decides? No point being wise after the appointment. Given the economic situation something like $200.000 PA appropriate. From there all the other salaries can be scaled back. If the current board don't think its high enough there is nothing stopping bonuses being paid for actual performance.

  31. Eight stand for Saturday's Mill Reef at Newbury. RHYTHM MASTER's Group 1 placed form at Deauville reads much better than the maiden FIVETHOUSANDTOONE won at Newcastle for all the latter won it easily. BAHRAIN PRIDE is unbeaten in two but both were on soft ground and on breeding he'll want at least 2000m if not further so I suspect he won't have the foot for this while RHYTHM MASTER got bogged down in the French mud last time and will be much better back on this decent ground.

  32. Saturday was a huge day in the UK and Ireland with three Group 1 races and a number of Group 2 events. At Doncaster, the final day of the Leger meeting took place on ground which had quickened to Good, Good to Firm in places. The Champagne was the big juvenile race of the meeting for the colts over 1400m. On paper, this looked a match between ALBASHEER and CHINDIT, both of whom came into the race unbeaten but it was CHINDIT who kept his 100% record with a hard-fought victory over ALBASHEER. I just think CHINDIT, with the benefit of a second run, knew more than ALBASHEER who had won his maiden by six and a half lengths and had probably learnt much less. I'm not sure if and when the two met again, you;d have the same result. STATE OF REST came over from the Jospeh O'Brien stable and perhaps in a clue of later events ran a fine race to be a close third with the three over seven lengths clear of the remainder. It's quite possible all three are above average juveniles but on breeding all three look to be milers. The Park Stakes over 1400m was yet another strong race in a division which has looked full of quality and WICHITA benefited from having an excellent Frankie Dettori to just hold the challenge of ONE MASTER who came back to something nearer her form at this trip. MOLATHAM was a close third and he plan is for WICHITA and ONE MASTER to head for the Foret, which I still think is going to the race of Arc day. On then to the Leger at Doncaster over 2800m, the oldest and last of the British classic races. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kTf3XwA7kg For those who read my bletherings, I'll just remind you of this: Among the bigger prices I'm keen on BERKSHIRE ROCCO who was running on at York behind PYLEDRIVER and is a knocking each way bet at 33/1. Who wins the Leger? I like Group 1 form in Group 1 races and that means SANTIAGO - he is back in his own age group and is a classic winner so he'll do for me with BERKSHIRE ROCCO to sneak into the frame at a price. I have to say I really thought I was going to get a big draw from BERKSHIRE ROCCO and I also thought at one point SANTIAGO was going to win but the ground was probably quick enough for him. PYLEDRIVER just didn't quite see out the trip while HUKUM just didn't have the pace in a Group 1. Having had a £5 each way on BERKSHIRE ROCCO at 33s and £20 win on SANTIAGO on 3/1 I made some money on the race but was left to reflect on what might have been. Given the paucity of the stayers' division, I really hope they send BERKSHIRE ROCCO over 3200m next season - both he and SANTIAGO look really promising stayers. Over to Leopardstown and day one of Irish Champions Weekend which featured two Group One heats. The Matron was for the fillies and mares over 1600m. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj8KlxsXUig Another wonderful finish but it was former jockey turned trainer Johnny Murtagh who got the money with CHAMPERS ELYSSES who just ran down PEACEFUL in the final 100m. It's hard to think the winner won a handicap off 86 back in June and was winning this off 110 defeating multiple Group 1 winners in PEACEFUL and FANCY BLUE who once again ran very close. As I suspected, it all happened too quick for FANCY BLUE over 400m shorter on a sharp track - PEACEFUL came to win her race and was mugged in the final 150m. KNOW IT ALL was a close fourth and ALBIGNA was fifth so this was a strong renewal. On then to the Irish Champion Stakes, arguably the top race of the Irish Flat season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW_ZAz1eGeQ Another wonderful race and a change in tactics by Ballydoyle brought about the downfall of GHAIYYATH. In truth, the front two were there every step of the way and Seamie Heffernan was always there giving William Buick no peace on the favourite. MAGICAL is a superstar - take out ENABLE and we'd be hailing her as one of the best fillies of recent times. True, she was slightly below par at York but Leopardstown has always been a venue she has enjoyed whereas Longchamp has never worked. In truth, she's a 2000m filly albeit off a strong gallop and I'd love to see her in a Cox Plate. GHAIYYATH ran another fine race in defeat - perhaps it was quick enough after York but he's had a wonderful season. ARMORY and SOTTSASS were third and fourth while JAPAN disappointed once again over a trip I think short of his best especially on a sharp track. I know Ryan Moore thinks the world of the horse and though he's 33/1 for the Arc I just think he's capable of running a real race back up in trip. Elsewhere on the card, CADILLAC shot to the top of the 2000 Guineas market with an impressive performance in the Group 2 Champions Juvenile over 1600m. Clearly, the soft ground didn't help last time but on a sound surface he's proved himself a real talent. Finally, my old mate SAFE VOYAGE did me another nice turn when winning the Boomerang albeit by a short head from SINAWANN who ran a huge race in defeat. SAFE VOYAGE will probably go for the Queen Elizabeth at Ascot on Champions Day and we know he goes on slow turf. In ordinary years, the Foret would be the option but that looks a red-hot race this year.

Woeful would be a better word to describe supporting card. As for the Hannon it is no longer the race it used to be mainly due to different training methods re getting your horse to the Cup in November. Classie Brigade looks a home run on its last perfromance

And there is a difference between a 12 and 1400 too. I think these people need to show their face because I reckon most of them dont invest in our industry and they dont race horses otherwise we wouldnt have this unworkable programme. I next option for a 74 1400 is on the 2nd of October and all those horses that run this weekend will be looking for it too so once again more than likely we will miss out. We can nominate for an open 1400 but as always we are on the ballot or miss out. All I want them to do is use their comman sense look at what is happening with the fields and give us a fair opportunity

    How Much is Too Much?

The news today is the Warwick pilot will go ahead on Monday with just 474 spectators made up of 150 Annual Members, 124 in Hospitality and 200 spaces for Owners so no actual tickets sold. Newmarket's three day pilot is also for the moment going ahead with 1000 spectators each day. With the number of positive test results rising to nearly 4,000 today, I do think the chances of a full return of spectators next month are remote.
