Well it makes sense. The money for racing can only come from one main source - punting. That’s why State Govts in Australia reduced their take in order for the Industry to flourish. Those that decided to milk the bookies (eg South Aust) suffered. If NZ can get the TAB to be competitive and do some marketing and promotion it might have a chance. Racing Qld will soon have Metro Racing on Free-to-Air TV for 52 weeks of the year. They have dedicated Radio Stations (Radio TAB), good form guides avail at Newsagents, incl Best Bets our on Thursday’s, plus tipping sheets in TAB’s and any number of PubTabs. It is promoted so as to attract the punter. The Breeders cannot sustain racing. There’s no money for the Industry - it stays with the Breeder. So 100% focus has to be on the Punter. Attract, nuture, reward, be competitive. Simple.

Bargain priced horses are always the best. Another example - Rothfire, fave for the big Sydney races. Cost $10k but the Nigerians scammed the first $10k so Heathcote paid twice. Still $20k. Takeover Target, Black Caviar, the list goes on. Back to the topic - it’s the Punter. That’s where “all” the $ comes from. Without the punter there is no racing and that’s why NZ racing is bad - it’s a closed shop. It will never work because there are not enough big punters in NZ.

Second paragraph mentioned that Trump "This woman would be the worst and most incompetent Prime Minister in my 74 years of drawing breath. It is not difficult to fathom how a person of so little ability and intelligence has managed to gravitate to a position that is so beyond her capability. A mix of personality and petty politics got her there. It is worth remembering that her party did not win the last election. The vagaries of how we operate MMP and the ancient resentment towards a certain party by he who held the balance of power put her there."

    How Much is Too Much?

After last week's fiasco at Doncaster, which cost the course owners £250,000, the previous optimistic mood has been countered by a cold splash of reality. The Government has ordered the size if crowd pilots at racing and other events to be cut from 5,000 to 1.000. Now, 1,000 people is nothing for a big track and the way racing works and is funded over here makes it not work and the warning signs from racecourses are growing in intensity and frequency. Racecourses up here have three main income sources - first, media rights whereby the courses get money from the bookmakers and specialist tv channels to show racing. Second, raceday attendance - that's people paying at the gate, corporate hospitality, other food and drink, merchandise and the like. For the big venues, the raceday crowd is 70-80% of the income stream especially on music nights and big weekends. Doncaster normally get nearly 30,000 on Leger day, most of whom are paying £40-£60 to get in the track - add on food and drink and the numbers mount up. The on-course bookmakers pay the racecourse to stand and take money from the punters. The third income stream is non-raceday revenue - corporate events, exhibitions, weddings and the like. With most courses racing 20-25 days per year, the other 300+ days are opportunities to make other income. The problem is currently the second and third income streams just aren't happening and the possible loss of Christmas parties will be a huge blow. Media rights money helps the small midweek meetings make money - after all, the crowd numbers and hospitality are well down but eight or nine races brings in some revenue albeit that is offset by the additional costs of meeting the biosecurity protocols now demanded. It is the cost of getting the course ready for even a limited crowd that is now the issue. For Newmarket, it's probably not worth setting the course up for 1,000 people and those who do attend would be annual members and their guests who have already "paid" for their racing. Warwick is slightly different and that pilot may still happen but the management of Chester have today warned that IF there is no prospect of crowds returning in 2021, they will have to mothball the track as it will be cheaper for them to do that then stage behind-closed-doors meetings at a loss. Officially, there are supposed to be spectators returning as of October 1st but few believe that will happen and indeed Warwick's pilot hangs in the balance tonight. The problem as we move into autumn becomes climatic - it's easy to keep people outdoors on gorgeous summer and autumn days but as the weather closes in, racegoers spend more time indoors and that's going to be a big problem with crowds congregating closely in confined spaces a major factor in transmission. I can't imagine spending a December or January afternoon outdoors the whole time - I've gone racing in horizontal sleet and snow and it's not as much fun as you think. The other problem is racecourses fund prize money from the above income streams plus sponsorship. Bookies sponsor a lot of races but with betting turnover down, will they be able to? Prize money at the highest levels has been slashed - the Ayr Gold Cup on 2019 went for £124,500 to the winner - on Saturday the winning owner will get £46,688. That has consequences down the racing chain albeit the Class 6 races at the bottom are for now going for the same as they did in 2019. IF crowds aren't coming back, the option will either be to reduce the number of races or reduce the prize money further or face mothballing tracks and perhaps concentrate on the AW tracks.

Agree, big fan of the punters , look after the punters and the sport looks after itself.

  6. There are just as many bad drives in the senior ranks too! The juniors a little while back in the north were assigned a "mentor" who discussed their drives with them and tutored them as to what they did wrong (or right) for each drive they had. Haven't heard lately of the scheme but presume it has been discontinued. You don't just pick up a discus and throw an Olympic record but a little tutoring and encouragement is gold. I also believe the former cadet scheme has vanished which really means the young ones these days are virtually just thrown off the deep end. Some are lucky however by getting good bosses who give heaps of advice to their staff and it shows with their improvement.

Why indeed? Tom Waterhouse has videos on you tube recounting tales of his days as a bookie( from a long line of bookies) and one story stuck out to me was that of all the MILLIONS of punters he dealt with could only think of 6, yes six that were regular consistent winners , so they really have nothing to be scared of, no real reason to restrict any punter other than the fact they are gutless. They are in the gambling business but too scared to risk anything , too scared to take anyone on for a short term loss and they are losing the long game as a result.

  9. Time to review the Doncaster action from last Friday with the ground drying all the time but a windy day with quite a headwind up the long home straight. The two Group 2 races were hugely contrasting - the Flying Childers for the juveniles over 1000m and the Doncaster Cup for the stayers over 3600m. The Flying Childers saw Lowther runner up SACRED go off favourite but it didn't quite go according to plan as she got caught on the wrong side of the track and couldn't quite get to UBETTERBELIEVEIT who provided a right boilover at 40/1. This was a first Group 2 for trainer and jockey and the horse had over-raced when trailing home last in the Gimcrack and clearly the 1000m suits well. SACRED did nothing wrong in defeat and back among her own gender she'll be very hard to beat. FRENETIC was disappointing - she broke well but simply didn't get home in the final 200m. The Doncaster Cup was a poor renewal but SPANISH MISSION was a convincing winner dishing out the same beating to SELINO he had at Chester in Listed company. It's fair to see with STRADIVARIUS retiring at the end of the season, the staying division looks incredibly weak and while one of the 3-y-o might emerge as the "new kid on the block", SPANISH MISSION and NAYEF ROAD look the best of a weak older group. THE GRAND VISIR is a one-paced plodder but kept on for third and I suspect may next be seen in the Cesarewitch over 4000m at Newmarket. It was all too much for the handicapper REVOLVER but next year he may be up to this.

    This is a must watch

I haven't got a horse in this race; I didn't post a 'Must watch' to the thoroughbred channel. Berri Te Kaha can go through it and critique it. Some flaws pop out to me, but another time. Gavin??? I am Lester. Once was married to MIchelle. I use to spend a lot of time in the Parnell and Newmarket TAB. But I had to go to prison for a little stint, because some gal was giving me funds for a movie about this historical Russian guy that played for the All Blacks.

    Jacinda Ardern

Our Queen of Corona By George With sincere apologies to Paul Simon, our very own “Queen of Corona”, through the medium of Chris Hipkins, has warned the Mt Roskill Evangelical Church congregation that the teachings from their Christian bible, delivered from the church pulpit, is misleading and that the only source of truth is delivered from the Labour Party pulpit each day. That debate is for another day considering the spread of the virus emerging from this church and this Government’s inability to control our borders. What is significant though is that whilst condemning the strict adherence of the congregation’s spiritual faith, Labour recently promoted a public holiday to celebrate the spiritual beliefs entrenched in Maoridom. So it appears one’s spiritual following has to be endorsed by Labour. Now it is not my point to debate the merits of either party’s articles of faith but to expose the hypocrisy that is entrenched within this Government. We can allow planeloads of Muslim mourners from all points of the globe into the country for a court hearing, but not rugby players. Those with spiritual connections to Allah were sponsored at the taxpayer’s expense to pursue their will whilst an economic windfall that would have been provided by the rugby tournament was kicked into touch. However, Ardern has proven once and for all that she is very adept at multi-tasking as she can lie and smile at the same time. But we all knew that anyway

Up 14% based on what period? Compared to April & May figures? Turnover will be up when your giving money back on every race if your runner finishes 2nd - 4th plus along with Bonus Bets at most meetings. I know one punter who has had 6 bets refunded back in a row, each time the codes I am sure get a % of turnover so that's more expense that the Industry must absorb. The $1.6 million should have been picked up by the Auditors when doing last years Annual Accounts. So they paid the Auditors a fortune to do the accounts and because they didn't pick up the error they look to pay an independent reviewer to find why and where. RITA were put in charge of all of the TAB's financial matters so the buck stops with them. Nearly 6 months on from the so called independent review and yet nothing reported to the Industry on the findings. When your going cap in hand with no money in the bank and owing tens of millions you have to have a sharper handle on financial matters. A monopoly situation was fine prior to the advent of the Internet. Companies who have monopolies get lazy and offer poor customer service eg Telecom and they don't pick up their act until competition arrives. Unfortunately the TAB management over the years didn't regard overseas bookmakers as a real threat and when they did the race was over. Even knowing they have lost thousands of customers to overseas competitors their customer service is poor, just ask any punter what they think of the TAB and its service. As for the disaster of the new betting platform what Company allows itself to get locked into a 10 year non-cancellable contract? They paid for it to be built but don't own it yet they pay $17 million a year to service it. 10 year locked in contract so why the hell would you be looking to outsource your betting? Remembering Jetbet used to do both tote and fixed odds so now you have two betting platforms doing essentially what one did previously. How did the TAB Board and TAB in-house lawyers allow that to happen? The Racing Act demands the TAB to be prudent and excercise financial care to ensure the Industry can prosper clearly given the total mess of the betting platform cost and ongoing costs verse return that didn't happen. You want move forward those two steps will get the ball rolling other than it's well not hard to work out the end result. Get rid of the TAB's monopoly and let overseas bookmakers operate in NZ as long as they pay their fair % to the Industry and get rid of the DIA's involvement in having anything to do with the future well being of the Industry, 9-5 public servants are clueless as to what is needed as has been proven n the past.

  17. Well, looking at Auckland noms this week they will soon become a fond memory with the club wiping the race without even trying get more horses - by leaving it open or even by ringing around trainers. Doesn't paint a rosy picture for the youngies contemplating working in the Industry. Last week Cambridge scrubbed too.
