    Roadshows?

Up 14% based on what period? Compared to April & May figures? Turnover will be up when your giving money back on every race if your runner finishes 2nd - 4th plus along with Bonus Bets at most meetings. I know one punter who has had 6 bets refunded back in a row, each time the codes I am sure get a % of turnover so that's more expense that the Industry must absorb. The $1.6 million should have been picked up by the Auditors when doing last years Annual Accounts. So they paid the Auditors a fortune to do the accounts and because they didn't pick up the error they look to pay an independent reviewer to find why and where. RITA were put in charge of all of the TAB's financial matters so the buck stops with them. Nearly 6 months on from the so called independent review and yet nothing reported to the Industry on the findings. When your going cap in hand with no money in the bank and owing tens of millions you have to have a sharper handle on financial matters. A monopoly situation was fine prior to the advent of the Internet. Companies who have monopolies get lazy and offer poor customer service eg Telecom and they don't pick up their act until competition arrives. Unfortunately the TAB management over the years didn't regard overseas bookmakers as a real threat and when they did the race was over. Even knowing they have lost thousands of customers to overseas competitors their customer service is poor, just ask any punter what they think of the TAB and its service. As for the disaster of the new betting platform what Company allows itself to get locked into a 10 year non-cancellable contract? They paid for it to be built but don't own it yet they pay $17 million a year to service it. 10 year locked in contract so why the hell would you be looking to outsource your betting? Remembering Jetbet used to do both tote and fixed odds so now you have two betting platforms doing essentially what one did previously. How did the TAB Board and TAB in-house lawyers allow that to happen? The Racing Act demands the TAB to be prudent and excercise financial care to ensure the Industry can prosper clearly given the total mess of the betting platform cost and ongoing costs verse return that didn't happen. You want move forward those two steps will get the ball rolling other than it's well not hard to work out the end result. Get rid of the TAB's monopoly and let overseas bookmakers operate in NZ as long as they pay their fair % to the Industry and get rid of the DIA's involvement in having anything to do with the future well being of the Industry, 9-5 public servants are clueless as to what is needed as has been proven n the past.

    Driving Appointments

Please Addington & Auckland DO NOT show drivers in your fields when they have not been confirmed. This week many - I am sure Reidman will not be going to Addington for drive on House's horse and Jay has a drive on Adrienne's horse when he has 2 of his own in the field! They just 2 of many instances. Very unprofessional

    How Much is Too Much?

After last week's fiasco at Doncaster, which cost the course owners £250,000, the previous optimistic mood has been countered by a cold splash of reality. The Government has ordered the size if crowd pilots at racing and other events to be cut from 5,000 to 1.000. Now, 1,000 people is nothing for a big track and the way racing works and is funded over here makes it not work and the warning signs from racecourses are growing in intensity and frequency. Racecourses up here have three main income sources - first, media rights whereby the courses get money from the bookmakers and specialist tv channels to show racing. Second, raceday attendance - that's people paying at the gate, corporate hospitality, other food and drink, merchandise and the like. For the big venues, the raceday crowd is 70-80% of the income stream especially on music nights and big weekends. Doncaster normally get nearly 30,000 on Leger day, most of whom are paying £40-£60 to get in the track - add on food and drink and the numbers mount up. The on-course bookmakers pay the racecourse to stand and take money from the punters. The third income stream is non-raceday revenue - corporate events, exhibitions, weddings and the like. With most courses racing 20-25 days per year, the other 300+ days are opportunities to make other income. The problem is currently the second and third income streams just aren't happening and the possible loss of Christmas parties will be a huge blow. Media rights money helps the small midweek meetings make money - after all, the crowd numbers and hospitality are well down but eight or nine races brings in some revenue albeit that is offset by the additional costs of meeting the biosecurity protocols now demanded. It is the cost of getting the course ready for even a limited crowd that is now the issue. For Newmarket, it's probably not worth setting the course up for 1,000 people and those who do attend would be annual members and their guests who have already "paid" for their racing. Warwick is slightly different and that pilot may still happen but the management of Chester have today warned that IF there is no prospect of crowds returning in 2021, they will have to mothball the track as it will be cheaper for them to do that then stage behind-closed-doors meetings at a loss. Officially, there are supposed to be spectators returning as of October 1st but few believe that will happen and indeed Warwick's pilot hangs in the balance tonight. The problem as we move into autumn becomes climatic - it's easy to keep people outdoors on gorgeous summer and autumn days but as the weather closes in, racegoers spend more time indoors and that's going to be a big problem with crowds congregating closely in confined spaces a major factor in transmission. I can't imagine spending a December or January afternoon outdoors the whole time - I've gone racing in horizontal sleet and snow and it's not as much fun as you think. The other problem is racecourses fund prize money from the above income streams plus sponsorship. Bookies sponsor a lot of races but with betting turnover down, will they be able to? Prize money at the highest levels has been slashed - the Ayr Gold Cup on 2019 went for £124,500 to the winner - on Saturday the winning owner will get £46,688. That has consequences down the racing chain albeit the Class 6 races at the bottom are for now going for the same as they did in 2019. IF crowds aren't coming back, the option will either be to reduce the number of races or reduce the prize money further or face mothballing tracks and perhaps concentrate on the AW tracks.

  6. Plenty of time to pick the bones out of the weekend just gone so a bit further back to start the review. Day Two of the Leger meeting took place on ground that was basically perfect and under sunny skies - the problem was we were back behind closed doors and Doncaster's Owners were looking at a £250,000 loss. After an ordinary opening day, Thursday saw two Group 2 races for the fillies. The May Hill for the juveniles over 1600m saw a taking performance from INDIGO GIRL who came away in the final 200m despite looking very green and wandering to the left. I imagine the plan will be the Fillies' Mile but while she was getting some quotes for the Guineas and Oaks, the former may be too sharp and I would need convincing she would deal with the unique contours of Epsom. That said, she's an exciting prospect. The Park Hill over 2800m saw a successful smash-and-grab raid by the Irish as Joseph O'Brien's PISTA came with a late run to defy VIVIONN and favourite BELIEVE IN LOVE. PISTA is a daughter of American triple crown winner American Pharoah and this was the stallion's biggest win in the U.K to date. Physically, she looked a lovely stamp of a filly and while her future as a broodmare is assured, the plan is to go for the French equivalent race, the Royallieu, in three weeks. I'm not sure this was the strongest Park Hill ever in all honesty but the winner looks decent. I wouldn't normally mention a two-runner Class 2 Conditions race but it saw the return of last year's Leger winner, LOGICIAN. I must admit I thought he would be a big player in all the top 2400m races but unfortunately an attack of peritonitis left him close to death on two occasions so it's a triumph of veterinary and training that he is back on the course at all. He looked like a bull to be honest and there's plenty on which to be worked but he did it nicely having a decent gallop round and winning easily as you would expect. Trainer John Gosden was understandably non-committal after the race and is just hoping the horse takes well to the race over the next 7-10 days. I suspect big targets like the Arc or the Breeders Cup Turf will be off the agenda this year but he could be a real force next year and will become Gosden's stand bearer as both ENABLE and STRADIVARIUS are retired. He looks a potential top notch 2400m horse.

Bargain priced horses are always the best. Another example - Rothfire, fave for the big Sydney races. Cost $10k but the Nigerians scammed the first $10k so Heathcote paid twice. Still $20k. Takeover Target, Black Caviar, the list goes on. Back to the topic - it’s the Punter. That’s where “all” the $ comes from. Without the punter there is no racing and that’s why NZ racing is bad - it’s a closed shop. It will never work because there are not enough big punters in NZ.

  13. Breeders they are addicts , all 3 groups are equally addicted, racing is an addiction why else would breeders pay service fees that ensure most will never return a profit . Owners , addicts again the returns from a useful horse won't make a profit , racing for 10K is bad enough but even worse the winners today gets $5400 they used to get 7K Punters yep you guessed it Addiction All 3 groups have the same problem it's the only explanation that makes any sense .

    Ellerslie Track

So the Ellerslie track yesterday raced as a slow 9. In an email to owners late Friday the CEO suggested it could be a heavy 10. The observant among you will recall that the track had a significant drainage upgrade last year and has not been raced on for around 5 months. I checked the official NIWA weather observation for Auckland from 30 August to 11 September which showed less than 30 mm of rain. So what was the point of the drainage upgrade if nothing has been achieved, other than wasting industry money and resources. Why were these clowns not forced to install a Strathayr track or similar which would allow racing every 2 weeks. For Ellerslie to represent itself as NZ’s premier track is a joke. The industry has no future if this is the best it can do.

    Roadshows?

Careful. Statistics can be tuned to suit oneself. If 10 races were held and a total of $100 was bet, average turnover per race would be $10. If only 5 races were held the following year and a similar $100 was bet, average turnover per race would be $20, an increase of 100% per race over the previous year!

    Jacinda Ardern

Ardern Is a Disgrace The Most Unfair Election That I Can Remember Jacinda Ardern is a disgrace. She is a disgrace for managing, in just three years, to exacerbate all the problems the country was facing and starting to solve. She has failed in all the areas that she says her party stands for. She has completely failed her voter base. All the statistics relating to social problems have got worse. She has failed in housing, education, poverty, sport, and the economy. Not to mention COVID. In all the policy areas that matter when it comes to growing the economy, she has also failed big time. This woman would be the worst and most incompetent Prime Minister in my 74 years of drawing breath. It is not difficult to fathom how a person of so little ability and intelligence has managed to gravitate to a position that is so beyond her capability. A mix of personality and petty politics got her there. It is worth remembering that her party did not win the last election. The vagaries of how we operate MMP and the ancient resentment towards a certain party by he who held the balance of power put her there. This woman is no more capable of running the country than the New Conservatives are of winning a seat in Parliament. She says her government has built more state houses than any other. If that is the case why in June 2020 were there 16,651 families on the Priority A waiting list up from 4,054 in 2017? Labour said 4,054 was a disgrace. I don’t know what they call a 400% increase. Punishing landlords and causing skyrocketing rents won’t fix the problem they’re trying to solve. In education, we rank 35 out of the 41 richest countries. One-third of our fifteen-year-olds don’t have proficiency in reading and maths. The schools that were helping the most for the underprivileged were scrapped by Ardern purely for ideological reasons. Charter schools were a great alternative to those whom the state system had failed. They were not welcome by the Teachers’ Union so she quickly acquiesced to their demands. PHOTO-Supplied Dominic Elliot holding a sign: ‘Jacinda where is your support now?’ Ardern appointed herself as Minister to eliminate child poverty. Stats NZ in February reported that there were 151,700 children living in material hardship. These are children who live in households which can’t afford the essentials. They can’t afford fresh fruit or vegetables, can’t afford to go to the doctor and they can’t pay their bills on time. Poverty was remarkably worse in Maori and Pacific Island households – her voter base. There has been no improvement during her three years as Minister. Her latest blunder is losing the Rugby Championship to Australia. Her childish and stupid quarantine rules have cost this country and its economy dearly. She appears to have failed to recognise that rugby is pretty much a religion in this country and there was no reason, given a little bit of flexibility, that we could not have hosted the tournament. Even the Bledisloe tests are in doubt. One is scheduled on election night but she doesn’t see a problem with that. A bear with very little brain could work out that was a conflict of interest. She has now extended COVID restrictions in Auckland for another week at least. How very convenient. Judith Collins says it’s starting to look a little political. Not just a little. How are parties supposed to campaign to groups of ten? This is a straight-out political ploy which gives her all the initiative. There she was at 1 pm all over the television for half an hour talking not just about COVID but also her policies. This outrage needs to be looked at by the Electoral Commission. This is turning out to be the most unfair election that I can remember. The most hopeless person ever to hold the office of Prime Minister is being allowed to gerrymander this election to suit her own ends. This is a disgrace and so is she.

    Jacinda Ardern

Our Queen of Corona By George With sincere apologies to Paul Simon, our very own “Queen of Corona”, through the medium of Chris Hipkins, has warned the Mt Roskill Evangelical Church congregation that the teachings from their Christian bible, delivered from the church pulpit, is misleading and that the only source of truth is delivered from the Labour Party pulpit each day. That debate is for another day considering the spread of the virus emerging from this church and this Government’s inability to control our borders. What is significant though is that whilst condemning the strict adherence of the congregation’s spiritual faith, Labour recently promoted a public holiday to celebrate the spiritual beliefs entrenched in Maoridom. So it appears one’s spiritual following has to be endorsed by Labour. Now it is not my point to debate the merits of either party’s articles of faith but to expose the hypocrisy that is entrenched within this Government. We can allow planeloads of Muslim mourners from all points of the globe into the country for a court hearing, but not rugby players. Those with spiritual connections to Allah were sponsored at the taxpayer’s expense to pursue their will whilst an economic windfall that would have been provided by the rugby tournament was kicked into touch. However, Ardern has proven once and for all that she is very adept at multi-tasking as she can lie and smile at the same time. But we all knew that anyway

Well, looking at Auckland noms this week they will soon become a fond memory with the club wiping the race without even trying get more horses - by leaving it open or even by ringing around trainers. Doesn't paint a rosy picture for the youngies contemplating working in the Industry. Last week Cambridge scrubbed too.
