Some Good News?
Pam Robson and 5 others reacted to Leggy for a topic
Yes. But that's a contract between the buyer and NZB isn't it. Shouldn't be funded/subsidised by NZTR with industry funds.6 points -
Basically the industry is subsidising a couple of sweepstakes races to the tune of a half a million dollars. WD makes a good point while NZTR do their best to give the middle finger to the owners battling to get a start at industry day meetings etc. I don't believe the fields on that night would be much different if they were run for half the prizemoney, perhaps the Australians wouldn't come but that may not be an option anymore at any rate.5 points

Passing on the sad news of the passing Bert Swney . Bert and his wife Dorothy stood stallions in Matamata during the 80s and 90s . In later years they have been living in Levin training the odd racehorse . I remember going to stallion parades at Bert's farm , i think his most successful stallion was Drums Of Time , i could be wrong tho . Bert's health had been declining in recent years but was always happy to have a chat . He loved his horse racing . Along with his wife Dorothy you wouldn't meet a nicer couple . R.I.P. Bert .3 points

Yes, it seems strange that NZTR would have some contractual obligation to toss in $500,000 to support a couple of sales races. Usually those sort of things would be self funding. I have absolutely no idea what the situation is, but does the Australian racing industry subsidise the $1m races on the Gold Coast every January? Someone might know and be able to enlighten us. I am pretty sure that the NZ industry never used to subsidise the old Bayer Classic, which was open to all 3yos as long as they nominated in time. As Huey says above, I can't imagine that turnovers would be any different if those races were worth $750,000 each. So basically the $500,000 tossed in by the industry is totally dead money: it contributes nothing and generates nothing. If that $500,0000 was allocated to six additional industry meetings those meetings would provide starts for 700 horses and be largely self funding. The $500,000 would mostly be returned from commission on betting. I think it is the sort of question that people should be asking at these roadshow meetings later this week. Where exactly does NZTR see their priorities? Do they think their money is well spent spent subsidising these sweepstake races rather than supporting grassroots racing?3 points -

At the time of the sale you had the option of 'buying in' for a chance for the next two years to run in a million dollar race so I doubt they would be able to change that for this seasons 2yo and 3yo race and then also next seasons 3yo race. False advertising otherwise I would say??3 points -
Green Dispatch/ War Dispatch Rangiora Trials
chelseacol and one other reacted to Red Rum for a topic
NZTR form does this horse tomorrow a disservice, he's no maiden 9 year gelding . Out of half sister to Battle Paint , brother to group winners , including a group 2 winner at Saratoga on Saturday he has earnt over million bucks over the years . Ran up sequence on poly in France ( maybe waiting for Riccarton to get laid down ) .Then won Derby trial at Group 3 at Chantilly , then ran third in French Derby just behind New Bay and Highland Reel when denied clear run , then another group placing then a run behind Highland Reel Stateside at Arlington , off to HK and run in Derby there followed by a few years of winning and placing to earn keep , finishing in HK in March . Not many Derby place getters go round on a Tuesday trials day at Rangiora . If racing has any morals , if this horse goes no good in the end he deserves a decent retirement, he's earnt enough for a few people and given then some days out .Looks a beauty of a horse .2 points -

Bert was a great guy worked for him at Redoubt Park..he and Dorothy were fine people. Bert was a great guy to have on your side..great boss and an even better friend...we had many a good laugh after work up in the stallion barn office over a couple of cold beers...RIP big fella...thoughts and prayers to Dorothy and his family.2 points -
Fantastic to have Trackside at Methven on Saturday taping all of the trials. The dulcet tones of Matt Markham (not via the raceday sound system) giving great commentaries, throughout. A real good lead in watch on more than a few who will be racing on Sunday. Under level 2 Methven is able to host all owners who make it up there. Betting will be via mobile devices only or alternatively up the road to the Brown Pub. The Brown Pub will have their food caravan there from 12 noon onwards - a good hot and cold food selection (no alcoholic drinks available for purchase... red tape under Covid rules) However Methven does have a byo alcohol policy in place so no problems if you put a couple of cold ones in your chilly bin to celebrate your horse racing. Good luck to Madam Saas resuming and her owners - Westview Racing No.19 Syndicate, The Witches Of Westview No.2 Syndicate Love to see you all there and cheering this good thing on.2 points

The Magic Millions Carnival is unlike any NZ Carnival. It’s a week like MC week with Polo, Fashion shows, Golf events, Ball, cocktail functions, horse racing and MM Sales, etc. its huge for Tourism on the Gold Coast. The Qld Govt supports it with some substantial help as part of Qld Events Corporation. Most States have similar Organisations that operate to attract and support Major Tourism Events.2 points

Just glancing through some upcoming programmes and I notice the $1m sweepstake races at Ellerslie are still worth $1m. I presume NZTR is planning to toss in their $500,000 as usual. So things must be tracking ok for the industry. All of those eliminated and balloted horses at Timaru last week will be relieved that their sacrifice wasn't in vain and it was all for the greater good of the industry.1 point -
None of those races you mention are restricted entry, you make the field you make the field.1 point

I have owned horses in both codes both in syndicates and wholly owned and raced by me. Every bit as much fun in a syndicate as owning it yourself and you are able to spread your ownership way wider and you meet so many great people as a result. The downside is not having as much input or control when it comes to making decisions, a friend recently found out after the fact that the galloper he was in was sold to the South Island without any discussion and has since won several times. He was in it to watch it run and would have bought it himself if he had known.1 point

Therein lies the problem. No problem with the contract between NZB and the buyer but why on earth would NZTR contract with NZB to commit that level of industry funds to an NZB promotion involving restricted race events?1 point

Surely NZ Bloodstock doesn't toss in $1.5m, surely that is contributed by the purchasers of yearlings? And surely a $750,000 night would still be the only game in town? They are hardly going to be topped off by a $1m night at Avondale. And surely the public at large realise times are tough, and the racing industry is struggling as much as any other. And I'm sure most people would be happy to allow NZ Bloodstock to "have whatever eligibility rules they want", but not many would then expect the industry at large to toss in $500,000 to indulge them.1 point -

The argument is that the industry is better off having these races. It creates the big night (and it is a big night). The $750K night does not have the same ring as a million dollar race. I think it is great that NZ bloodstock throw in $1.5M and they should be allowed have whatever eligability rules the want. The other side is that the poor guy that breeds his own horse, pays for it right through to race day is not entitled to run in the race that NZTR contributes $500K too because he did not let NZ bloodstock clip the ticket. My personal solution would be the following: Any horse can run in the race however those that have not been through the sales ring are only eligable for the $250K (NZTR portion) where does that have been through the ring are entithled to the $1M. This would also mean that the race could eventually gain group status.1 point -

Below is a quote from Lyndsay Smith. TAKE NOTE. The value and importance of TV people showing the pre race parade and prelim of races. Its all about presenting the best experience of horse racing. Just showing backsides doing prelims is amateurish, Busting into parades with greyhound race just stupid. Lyndsay Smith.. “He (Waller) pulled my pants down, it’s fine, he outplayed me” Smith told Racenet. “He trained it better than I did, as simple as that, and I take my hat off to him. “I only saw the horse on TV and I must admit before the race I got a bit nervous because in my time I had never seen him look that good. “In my time of looking at Humidor, he is pretty unattractive but he looked pretty good in that mounting yard. “He looked better halfway up the straight. “I was thinking where did that egg come from, because it’s landed straight on my face.”1 point

I don't mind that owneship model. You're not going to make money, but that's not always the goal. You're spending peanuts and you can claim to have owned a Kentucky Derby winner, with the photo on the wall and all. I'm 100% confident if you spent $30 a month on a tiny share of a horse, you'd get more enjoyment than spending hundreds of dollars a month downing beer at your local depressing pub.1 point -

Timaru v All Weather.
dock leaf reacted to We're Doomed for a topic
Timaru has never raced on New Year's Day. Until about 1982 they used to race on the 27th and 30th Dec each year. The first day was Cup Day, a day after Wingatui. When Showgate won the 1,600m Timaru Cup she did it the day after winning the 2,400m Dunedin Cup. She was a pretty fair type of horse. Her's was one of the first 1,600m WFA Cups, it had previously been a stayers handicap. The second day in latter years used to feature the Showgate Stks for 3yo fillies: a pity no club in the SI considers it worth remembering that great horse these days. I often think that if Showgate and Grey Way had been Australian horses they would have feature races named after them at Flemington. We are very poor at that sort of thing in NZ, but that is another story.1 point -
No I’m pretty sure they didn’t, however in years gone by there used to be a very successful two day meeting over Christmas at Timaru, the 28th - the date they run on now and New Year’s Day.1 point
