  1. As a owner I had 2 horses nominated one will get in but then when they split the 1400 they made a maiden 1400 and 2 open 1400. As a rating 67 we dont get in but all the maidens get a run. In other words 3 1400 are bring run and they make 2 of them maidens except for a 66 that gets in. They then put 6 on each ballot well that a waste of time to because you not going to get 6 scratching. The other thing that is frustrating is one of the horses had to trial because she has been off the track for 16monghs due to injury do this is the first meeting we could nominate for but there are horses that have already started given a 2and start. If they are going to restrict the trials then restrict the starts to give everyone a fair go. Waikato is the big horse population but instead of giving us an extra meeting now they give the CD one next week and ours is 2 weeks away at Counties. My trainer also had a horse nominated for its first start after winning a trial and that will miss out too. When are NZTR going to start looking at what races we need and using their initiative to cater for the horses. They need to step out of the past and into the future for the good of racing.

  2. 'What he did for me was miles bigger than anything I was capable of dreaming of' Owner Stuart Graham pays tribute to his horse of a lifetime Intisaab Intisaab with Stuart Graham (second right) after success in the Tote Scurry Handicap at the Curragh in 2018 Patrick McCann 1 of 1 By Stuart RileyUPDATED 5:34PM, JUN 29 2020 To most the news of Intisaab's retirement will result in little more than a nostalgic shrug, another high-class sprint handicapper you have almost certainly backed at some point in his 70-race career who will never go backed again. But Stuart Graham is not most people. He is Intisaab's owner, and the news his admirable nine-year-old had picked up a sesamoid injury that has put an end to his racing career had him in tears. It is not just that Intisaab is the first horse Graham ever owned, or that he was very good – an 11-time winner who reached a rating of 109 at his peak – but because Intisaab has taken him places beyond his wildest dreams. Graham lives in Immingham, a small industrial town in north-east Lincolnshire, in a house whose value would have to be multiplied several times to match the £433,073 Intisaab has amassed in win and place prize-money. A chance job on an oil rig off the Shetlands, on what he describes as "daft money", meant the mechanical fitter could afford to take a chance on the 18,000gns purchase. Intisaab (leading); won 11 races and £433,073 in prize-money Martin Lynch Graham got him from the horses-in-training sale at the end of his three-year-old season from Shadwell and Dermot Weld and knew anything more than one losing season would mean he had to sell. Six years later the pair are still together. "I've not been able to tell anyone yet, I just don't know how to – I've been quite upset," he explains. "You're upset he's injured as you care about him as an individual, but it's also the memories and the good times that you think you're never going to have again. "I thought I'd have him for a year. You don't expect to make money, and in the first year he ran six times and won twice. I was in the Shetlands for his first win, but for the second I was going to Doncaster for a mate's 40th and I said to Dave [O'Meara, trainer], 'Can we run him?' "There was a lady riders' race and there was a lass in the yard called Becky Heptonstall who claimed 7lb off him. I'm not even sure if she'd ever ridden a winner, but they went and won. That was an amazing day. Then he picked up an injury and I thought that might be it. "His first two runs back were poor and I said to Dave, 'If this is going to be it can we just have a proper day out with him?' So we went all the way down to Ascot and we were in the last race of the day. They fed us and it was just an incredible day – and then he came second. "They took us for champagne and we didn't come out for two and a half hours, they said they get given x amount of bottles per meeting and most of the owners hadn't come in that day so we could have as much as we liked. It was unreal. I have a 60-inch canvas on my wall of that day alone, we thought it'd be the pinnacle of our lives at that stage." It wasn't. Intisaab was rated 78 that day. Two wins at Ayr and a Coral Sprint Trophy later he ended the year rated 105. Stuart Graham: Immingham home is a shrine to his beloved Intisaab "That was a funny day," Graham, 45, says of his win at York. "I did a survival-of-the-fittest race in Nottingham with my lad, who was 17 at the time, they'd had us swimming about in the River Trent, and then we jumped straight in the car up to York. We changed in the car park, my 15-year-old Lexus next to all those posh cars, as the two of us tried to look presentable. "At the owners' enclosure they took one look at us, still sweaty and dirty, and they weren't going to let us in until we showed them our badges. Half an hour later he'd won and everyone was taking our photo. It was surreal, we carried on all day." Graham, whose living room is a shrine to the horse, could entertain you with stories of the places Intisaab has got him into for hours, whether it is the Aga Khan's box at the Curragh or business class flights to Qatar, but his favourite memory of all was when he finished one place outside the money in the July Cup Harry Angel won from Limato, Brando and Caravaggio. "The memory that will stick with me forever was the July Cup, and he didn't even win any prize-money," he says. "That's not a place your average youth-turned-knobhead from Immingham should be frequenting, let alone stood in the parade ring before one of the biggest races of the year. "I've never seen so many people. To see his board in the Champions Series presentation, to this day the experience is one of the greatest days of my life. At the furlong point I dared to dream he could do it, which is insane. "He was beaten only four lengths by Harry Angel, giving him 6lb. I look back at that piece of form and think it's unreal. It was an unbelievable day to be involved with, we went out in Newmarket afterwards and had an absolute ball – we celebrated like we'd won, I didn't even get to bed that night." Part of the reason Graham loves Intisaab so much is how he has broadened his horizons and taught him to dream bigger. "People say you've lived the dream but I've done so much more than that. The dream, the ultimate hope and the reason I went for a six-furlong horse was to have a runner in the Great St Wilfrid," he says. "What he did for me was miles bigger than anything I was capable of dreaming of. I would never even consider those things were possible. I just want to thank Dave and Jason [Kelly, O'Meara's assistant] for being bloody brilliant at picking horses – they deserve so much credit." Intisaab was second in a Great St Wilfrid, and the man who still has the Union Jack rug he wore when winning in Qatar framed on the wall's only comment is "he didn't half finish quickly that day", is testament to how Intisaab shattered the ceiling of his expectations. Intisaab (cheekpieces, right) finishes second in the 2016 Great St Wilfrid Handicap, fulfilling Graham's dream to have a runner in the race The Intisaab chapter may be closed – he will spend his retirement with Danielle, who has looked after him for the last four years, with regular visits from Graham – but he was such a money-spinner for Graham he also covered the cost of the attempt at a sequel. How long that runs is down to Maharg's Princess. "There's not a huge amount left as there have been five years of training fees and I've bought another horse with those proceeds, but I've never had to dip into my pocket – which is just as well because I couldn't afford to do that," he says. "He's funded himself and it's been so much fun, so this week has been heartbreaking. "It would be a shame to never be involved again but Intisaab has been retired and the filly we bought, who turned out to be Night Of Thunder's very first foal on the ground, ran a great race on debut. We expected a huge amount at Thirsk but she's picked up an injury too, it's just a little niggle but it will set her back a month or so – we hope she'll be out at the backend of the year." To see Intisaab's retirement from Graham's perspective makes the tears all the more understandable. This was not just an owner's horse of a lifetime, but a horse who for six years changed his owner's life.

  3. What a pathetic situation, run some more bloody race days, I know my owners haven’t paid training fees through the Covid situation to have their horses standing in their boxes. Why are we so slow on the uptake? They must have known their would be a backlog of horses looking to run.....

  4. Done a bit of digging , Pharr Canal , out of mare called La Fontaine . La Fontaine (La Fonteine) is a County in Louisiana , in that County is a township called New Iberia where in 1872 Henry Newton Pharr was born . You've guessed it Henry Newton Pharr grew up to head the Louisiana -Rio Grande Canal Company . He built a canal near New Iberia called Pharr Canal where now it's pretty good for fishing by all accounts . Straight up legit name in honour of Mr Pharr .

The horse was a runner , it's in the official result. As for favorite getting poleaxed by loose horse , that's the chance you take punting . Saddles slip, horses break down, jockeys take wrong course , horses swerve at a shadow , lead slips from saddle and weigh in light any number tales of woe . If the gate malfunctioned causing the horse to lose rider ,and the horse is deemed a late scratching and it then poleaxed favorite then IMHO the favorite should also be late scratch or void race maybe because it's been hampered by a horse that isn't in the race , as it was She a Rippa raced yesterday .

  8. Race 3 Mackay today. The No 2 runner lost its jockey leaving the barrier. On the TAB website this horses is listed as running fifth (jockeyless). According to Racenet the horse was/is a scratching. Absolutely appalling, actually I couldn’t give a flying f**# if it’s an innocent mistake. And they can stick the $40 worth of my bets they haven’t refunded right where the sun doesn’t shine. I don’t want the money back I’ll just consider myself to be a slow learner. Its the reason I closed my account they are a shambles.

  9. David I counted 325 nominations for the 12 race card at Te Rapa on Saturday. Things won’t get any better next month either. There will be a massive log jam and some horses won’t get a run until the new season. I am lucky that two I have shares in will both get a start but feel sorry for all those owners whose horses will miss out. Surely NZTR can organise extra meetings in the north for July to cater for the numbers they have badly underestimated.

  10. I said this yesterday regarding the programming in the CD but is applicable for all regions . Also last week after seeing the number of horses missing a run at Counties i said Te Rapa could be a shit fest , well unfortunately it is worse than even i thought . Noms out for TE Rapa and they have programmed 12 races, but there are sufficient noms to run 21 full fields . 310 noms, now there are some double noms but not enough to cause much change . Have they done the right thing by owners and said we have to put on further meetings to meet demand or at least said that they are looking at the possibility , NO , NO , NO . They have said any horse missing a run at Te Rapa , 142 horses missing a run , will be guaranteed a run at Counties on the 11th or Ellerslie on the 15th . This is not good enough from NZTR , they asked the industry to come to the party after Covid and get their horses into work . Well come to the party they did , BIG TIME . But NZTR has forgotten that they were putting a party on . DISGRACEFUL . NZTR has failed their participants massively . I genuinely feel sorry for every owner that has missed a run this week . All they had to do was program another meeting , it was always obvious from trials and the Counties noms that the horses were there . Short sighted and myopic . Will they add meetings or will they stubbornly stick to what they have programmed , NO longer interesting just SAD . P.S. Awapuni noms were not out at the time i wrote this , so just going to check them out , will be interesting .

  13. So tomorrow 1 July....most spring horses back in work....let's say here in the CD there are 600 horses in work Of those 95% will be ineligible or uncompetitive to race at the 3 day HB carnival 85% for same reason won't race at Feature Saturdays....... Wanganui, New Plym, Marton, Hawera, Trentham ( from memory) 25% are babies ( 2 and 3yo in their first preps, will have a jumpout / trial and go out ) Of the remaining ( 60%) .....half will be plugging round in the mud currently.......the other half.... 150 - 200 horses will be looking to kick off their season / career with say 3 races spaced at 3 week intervals throughout the spring.........at Industry days......many of which no longer exist Just looking out the window at my 2 who should be back in work tomorrow........maybe they will remain home for a couple of months........... while I try and get my head around this

I believe there needs to be an avenue for a complaints procedure against the board as the police have. Any organisation accountable only to themselves runs the risk of going off the rails occasionally.

  16. As the interested owner/breeder of a maiden horse nominated for this meeting in Race 5 1200 M maiden that has a rating of 51, I was suprised that at this stage she does not make the field of 14. However looking at the field the first few are rating 45 horses that I assume were balloted from another meeting so obviously that will be a technique used by astute people to jump way ahead of their rating in future to get a start? My beef is that we should be number 13 not 15! #13 Forgetz has had 5 starts for 0ne 2nd and 4 unplaced runs & $2000 stakes; #14 Ciciolina has had 6 starts for two 3rds and 4 unplaced runs $1750 in stakes and Pearl Davone has had 6 starts for one 2nd, one 3rd, two 4ths and only 2 unplaced runs and $3850 in stakes. So how do they rate the horses on the same rating? But wow over 40 horses nominated so how many in the pipeline that owners are paying training fee's for and no opportunity to race....

dbtab I think that establishment has changed hands a number of times in recent years. For about 15 years my Dad and myself were regular visitors. Ian Morgan and later Alvin Clark were the owners in those days- real racing people. Sounds as though the present operators have no interest in racing. Shame.

Takes time for the TAB to get official finishing order & winning margins etc. Also-rans are just listed in numerical order until the full result is entered, it just happened to be that #1 ran 4th, and that is the way it will always be.. otherwise you would have to wait much longer instead of getting provisional results.

  32. Just had a look at Palmy noms and not too bad fortunately . They have had the foresight to split the 1400 as 12 of those nom'd for this are mdns . The Mdn 1000 has 23 noms but only 12 can get a run , this should have been split into a 11/12 . Some may say , they can go to Wanganui next week , and that may be , but they chose to want to run at Palmy . They have got their horses ready to race as asked , the industry should reward them for fulfilling that request . I wonder if anything will be said to NZTR by industry participants or they just take it on the chin .

  34. Great story. Watched a similar story on either Netflix or YouTube a couple of years ago about a group of Welsh people who decided at their local that they were going to breed and race a horse. They got given a mare and went to a 3k stallion - the area they live was quite depressed. Anyway, the horse won, from memory about 150k. Anyone see this and remember the name of it, as I wouldn’t mind watching it again.

  46. Peter Earley's video tribute resonated with me, when he was a young boy he attended the racetrack and was tipped a horse to bet - it won and that started his love for racing (roughly the gist of it). The tipster would have never thought anything of it, but that information built a racing legacy, 50 years of content and contribution to racing. We live in a day and age where punters want more information than they can chew, to restrict it is the biggest mistake

  48. Same issue in the CD . They are going to build an A/W at Awapuni , but Race are already in debt and are having to find circa $3mil to help finish the A/W , god knows where from . Yet 20 mins away one of the best winter tracks in NZ is sitting idle , Foxton . No racing at Foxton since the fires a few years back but they still have the old public grandstand there , spend some money there getting the stand up to standard and their away racing . But no , we will spend $13mil for an A/W . When all we here is about reducing industry costs why are they hell bent on spending money on something that isn't required , when for probably much less than 10% of the cost of the A/W we having perfectly serviceable race track on our door step . Foxton always attracted a good crowd on course and good competitive fields , has been sorely missed in the CD .

  49. I find it interesting that Cambridge is spending something like $16m on their track, which has never been an actual racecourse, and Winston is now encouraging them to spend more money on a flash entrance and a grandstand so people can attend and watch the races. Basically the entire supporting structure for race-meetings is having to be developed from scratch. Meanwhile Avondale has a track that everyone seems to acknowledge provides a good racing surface, and their main problem (apart from perhaps a dysfunctional committee) is an old dunger of a public grandstand. I haven't been to Avondale since the days (nights) of night racing. In those days the members grandstand was reasonably flash. Surely a reasonable solution would be the knock down the public grandstand and replace it with a bit of an embankment or a multi-purpose facility that sports teams and others could use on non race-days (which is most of the time really). It should be an easier stand to bowl over than Riccarton. All of the debate about Avondale doesn't seem to include anything constructive like tidying the place up dramatically. It all seems to focus around the fact that they have been there for years and despite the fact they are poorly run and the place looks like a tip they should be allowed to continue wasting a valuable resource. There are a lot of race tracks around the country that are very run down. The industry has hardly spent any money on facilities since the early 90s. The best thing rita could do would be to buy a fleet of bulldozers and send them around the country. Ironically the most recent racecourse developments in the whole country are probably at Waimate.

  50. Shut the bloody place down...it’s awful. Nobody wants to go there...it’s the slum of the industry. Jan Skinner - move on, do what is right for the industry and not just for your own self interest. Auckland doesn’t need two galloping tracks within a stones throw of each other. Just enjoy some days at the nations premier track down the road and invest your money wisely. There’s still a place for your club, just not at your current venue. The lawyers will drain your finances as well as the industry’s funds and at this time those dollars are more important than ever so do the right thing for everyone, not just your own club. Sadly this won’t happen I dare to say and self interests will prevail like they always do in racing. Nobody will look at the bigger picture, they’d rather just look at their own little patch.
