Greyhound story on Sunday programme
scoobysnacks and 4 others reacted to barryb for a topic
Interesting story, I thought Glenda responded quite well to the interrogation questioning. I checked out the Facebook site to see what the responses would be and of course 99% are ban it now & the vast majority are women. I bet whilst they typed their abhorrence on Facebook they sipped away on there Latte, will happily pour low fat milk on there breakfast & have cheese and crackers mid arvo. There is nothing worse than a person with a hypocritical social conscience whom there virtuousness shows through a keyboard.5 points -
RITA/TAB think their future revenue is in the hands of device holding “elite” punters who bet in four figure amounts. These type of punters have a short shelf life. Meantime they have thrown long time punters under the bus. Pity they don’t conduct TAB and on course surveys to find out what punters really want.4 points

RIP Steve Clark
nzhorseracing and 2 others reacted to pilli for a topic
Sad News broke today that highly respected Northern Trainer Steve Clark had passed away suddenly. Steve had a lifetime association in The Greyhound Code, harking back to Kumeu Days during the 1970's. After mixing his business career & greyhounds as hobby,The New Millennium saw Steve get serious & devote all his time to building up a strong Racing Team. From his Dairy Flat Kennel, alongside partner Kathy,he tasted Group One success for the first time in time honoured Waterloo Cup 2008 with Magic Spike,They also combined to win NZ Shootout in same year Steve enjoyed mass publicity due to deeds of star stayer Swift Fantasy,a dual Group One winner in Silver Collar 2010,and NZ Stayers Cup 2011. A rare Group One Quinella followed in 2012 NZ Derby, with a litter he bred and reared seeing Grizz and Peking Tom starring. Another home bred Blitzing Mayhem gave Steve his first NZ Cup victory in 2014,a celebration lasted long into the night next day at Sefton Arms.(thanks Steve) Recent years saw a change in property and downsizing his team, but another quality hound gave Steve his second NZ Cup on mantelpiece with Pinny Mack in 2019. Ironically,Pinny Mack was favourite today at Manukau In The Peter Earley Classic, his final race in a stellar broadcasting career. However, like Steve, his runners never made it to the start'. Thanks Steve for the many trips to the races, and thrills galore helping with your runners on the track. Condolences to your Daughters, Grandkids ,and Kathy.3 points -

You are correct. Sunshine Coast has a crown about 6 horses off the fence. FLEMINGTON has a similar scenario. The problem when you get to Doomben is when the rail is out - sometimes up to 9 metres! It’s a narrow track and when the rail is out, horses need to be in the first 2 or 3 pairs. The pace is dictated to suit them. I like Sandown as a track. Backmarkers can win there - and do often. But it gets down to the “pace” of the race at a lot of venues. At the moment, Eagle Farms new track is like concrete about 3 inches below the surface. They get their toes in and cut the surface but the firmness underneath is causing problems for horses - a lot of jarring up. I played golf with one of the top Vets servicing leading Stables and he’s getting a lot of concern from Eagle Farm due to the firmness. The best track in SE Qld at the moment is Caloundra. Wide track with a long straight. Kind to horses.2 points

Well that was absolutely pathetic! No Radio coverage or build up on a Saturday morning , no interviews with trainers or jockeys , no oncourse presenters .no after race excitement. Can it get any Farking worse ?1 point

Well, I know a few of the boys at the Gold Coast and they have their opinions of this sand track. When it’s a Good 4 (or thereabouts) it’s Ok (even allowing for the shortish straight) but you do need a Jockey who “knows the track”. Dan Griffiths is probably the best rider there. They can win from anywhere but best to be cautious when the rail is out a fair way - best to be on or near the lead. I rarely have a bet there outside the carnival, MM or if One of mine is racing or I get some mail from mates in the Toby Edmonds stable. I know Toby pretty well but he does keep his cards close to his chest. I saw him at golf on the thurs before Stradbroke day and wished him luck in the JJ Atkins with Water of Wisdom and his other good 2yo. I didn’t get a mention about Tyzone and he won the Straddie!!1 point

It just goes to show you the people running the 3 codes are way out of touch. Need more grassroots from the codes having more imput but the will never happen now that the goverment appoints most of these positions. After nearly 30 years being involved in 2 of the codes I fear for this industry going forward.1 point

Victoria Racing
scoobysnacks reacted to barryb for a topic
Absolutely love finding those on pacers, but the spectacle from Victoria with possibly the exception of Flemington is ordinary at best right now. Caulfield, Sandown, Bendigo, Warnambool, Cranbourne & more are no better than watching Pukekohe from Saturday. Compare it to the racing Trump has in Qld, esp Doomben, Eagle Farm & Sunshine where for some reason back markers can get to the middle of the track and fly home reapeatedly. Trump will know better than me as to why, something to do with track design and drainage that creates a fast lane in the middle of those venues. & then look at Ipswich and Toowoomba which are Victorian like.1 point -
On then to the fourth day of the Royal meeting and after a dry night and morning the ground was upgraded to Good to Soft on the Straight Course and Soft, Good to Soft places on the Round track. The feature Group 1 of day four was the Commonwealth Cup for the 3-y-o over 1200m. This went to GOLDEN HORDE who was close to the pace if not leading all the pace and saw it out very well. KIMARI fluffed the start which is unusual for a Wesley Ward type but ran on strongly. Did it cost her the race? I think not but it didn't help. Some of the other fancied horses such as PIERRE LAPIN and LOPE Y FERNANDEZ were poor and the latter's dismal effort does cast a shadow on the quality of the Irish 2000 Guineas form. As for the winner, he will no doubt take on the older horses at Newmarket next month and we'll get a sense of how the generations compare. One point I would make is trainer Clive Cox is one of the best handlers of sprinters we have and he made no secret of the fact GOLDEN HORDE was trained for this race rather than for the classics with this as a consolation. You need a specialist for this - it's too soon for the classic horses and too quick for those building into their 3-y-o season. GOLDEN HORDE had solid juvenile form and I backed him at 6/1 so it was a steak supper instead of dog food. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT2EDFBf6Hc A much stronger under-card than the previous two days featured the Hardwicke Stakes over 2400m for the older horses. This produced a breakthrough win for the Gosden-trained filly FANNY LOGAN who put the older colts to the sword winning by two and a half lengths. She had herself been well beaten in a Group 3 at Haydock on debut but this was a commanding performance and for a stable already full of very good fillies and mares it's an embarrassment of riches. The fact is FANNY LOGAN could be an Arc contender which of course means locking horns with ENABLE and STRADIVARIUS to name but two. I suspect she'll head for the Yorkshire Oaks first. Of the others, ALOUNAK ran a huge race at 40s in second and he didn't get the best of runs up the rail not that he would have beaten the winner but he might have been closer. The others were in a bit of a heap with DEFOE rewarding each way support at 6s but both ANTHONY VAN DYCK and ELARQAM were disappointing - the latter, I felt, didn't quite see out the trip and I suspect he'll drop back to 2000m. The Queen's Vase for the staying 3-y-o over 2800m turned into a real slog on the holding ground. SANTIAGO clearly possesses stamina in abundance and outstayed BERKSHIRE ROCCO who ran another huge race in defeat and remains very much on my Derby shortlist at 20/1. As to whether the winner will come to Epsom I don't know. With the Irish Derby before the English version this year Ballydoyle have to shuffle their pack even more carefully than usual. The front two drew nearly nine lengths of the others, most of whom went too hard too soon and paid the price. The Norfolk Stakes for the juvenile colts over 1000m went to THE LIR JET who, having smashed the track record on firm ground at Yarmouth from the front, showed massive versatility and courage in coming from off the pace to run down GOLDEN JET from the Wesley Ward stable who did the usual trick of going hard from the front. It might have worked on a quicker surface and it almost worked here but not quite. The front two were nicely clear so are obviously decent types. I wonder if THE LIR JET might be a player in the aforementioned Commonwealth Cup in 2021 but that's a long way off. Just a word from the other races - DANDALLA was a hugely impressive six length winner of the Albany Stakes and could be anything. It's true the progeny of Dandy man do go well on the ground but she routed these and might be worth trying at further - the dam was placed at 1600m but I don't see DANDALLA as a Guineas filly but she might be in the mix for a race like the Duchess of Cambridge at Newmarket next month.1 point

Thursday at the Royal Meeting is known as Ladies' Day and before the coming of the Saturday meeting, it was the most popular day of the week with in excess of 70,000 attending. Nothing like that this year and, rather like the Wednesday, a weak card in all honesty. The feature was of course the Gold Cup over 4000m. This iconic race used to have the same if not greater prestige than the Classics but with the emphasis shifting downward in distance the staying races just don't have the breeding significance - indeed, Gold Cup winners such as KAYF TARA have ended up more as stallions for jumpers. This year's renewal was all about STRADIVARIUS bidding to join the likes of SAGARO and YEATS in winning three Gold Cups. STRADIVARIUS had run well when third in the Coronation Cup over 2400m at Newmarket but this was 1600m further. Confidence had been tempered slightly by 18mm of rain overnight and during the morning which turned the ground Soft. None of that made the slightest difference as STRADIVARIUS put up a thoroughly dominant performance. Dettori was the only one with his horse on the bridle turning for home and to be honest it'll be a long time before you see an easier winner of a Group 1. STRADIVARIUS won by 10 lengths and for those who follow my nonsense NAYEF ROAD came home a clear second to reward my 16/1 each way bet. He was in turn eight lengths ahead of CROSS COUNTER and the rest were strung out like, well I'll try an NZ analogy, the Great Northern field. STRADIVARIUS re-established himself as the dominant stayer and while there will be those who argue he needs to get the better of KEW GARDENS, that match will have to wait. Trainer John Gosden intimated STRADIVARIUS will go to Goodwood but the Arc remains very much on the table. The Owner is keen to run even if that means taking on ENABLE and for Dettori it will be a real question of split loyalties between two horses for whom he was publicly expressed his affection and admiration. As for a fourth Gold Cup, well, STRADIVARIUS will only be seven next year so the opportunity to emulate YEATS is clearly there. NAYEF ROAD ran a huge race in defeat and I can't help but think he will be a tough opponent for STRADIVARIUS in the staying races ahead. CROSS COUNTER didn't get home in the soft ground again and TECHNICIAN, for whom the ground should have been an advantage, was very disappointing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6JatWI8OqI A couple of notes from the rest of the card and note the ground was soft so whether these form-lines will be viable through the summer remains to be seen. MOLATHAM and MONARCH OF EGYPT were nicely clear of the others in the Jersey and they could be a couple of decent 3-y-o. Another nice winner was MOUNTAIN ANGEL in the Wolferton, a Listed race over 2000m for the 3-y-o which often produces a nice winner. MOUNTAIN ANGEL defeated SIR DRAGONET but to be honest the second, who was one widely considered a serious Derby horse, looked a bit less than willing to this observer. The first 2-y-o race of the meeting, the Chesham Stakes over 1400m, went to BATTLEGROUND from the Aidan O'Brien yard. BATTLEGROUND's breeding is about as good as it gets - he's by War Front out of Found, the 2016 Arc winner who had previously just failed to beat Almanzor in the 2016 Irish Champion Stakes, the second best race of the last decade (the best was the 2013 Queen Anne) in terms of quality and depth. BATTLEGROUND is Found's first foal and certainly an auspicious start.1 point

I thought the slapper was dreadful. No wonder she failed miserably with the RIB. The hard questions are being asked by society. Dogs first and lining up horse racing next. You don't think the horse numbers are any better than the dogs? The dogs screaming round those tracks at speed has always been a problem, but let's face it, some of the galloping tracks are no better but very little has been done over the past 20 years to REALLY improve it. What we lack is leadership to make sure our animals are looked after post racing. Wake up everyone. This is not a false start.1 point

What budget do they have to work with? They were active on Instagram from what I saw which is a start. Get used to this Puha, this is the new norm for racing, Kiwis are just not interested in boring slow gambling. Lacking bookmakers, zero atmosphere & independent marketing, combined with Hobnobs & Wankers shunning new participants for yrs. Look at club memberships, they are stagnant, tells a story in itself. Grey suited over 65s white males totally dominate, hardly the demographic known for outside the box thinking. A sad reality of a sunset industry with a very limited lifespan in incredibly difficult times.1 point

I was surprised how good the track was for the amount of rain they had. Race 1 last 600m 35.05. Race 2 34.45. I haven't checked those yet but full credit to the track staff. I walked it before the first and was expecting my 'Stick In The Mudometer' to go much deeper.1 point

I don't usually complain about these things just adjust and vote with my feet but this has to be costing NZ Racing big time. Yesterday when putting bets on I could check three aussie sites for pricing while I waited for the NZTAB field to load. This morning I go to have a bet in Oz and the NZTAB has no FO up for the race. They seem to have gone from bad to worse in recent months.1 point
