    RIP Raceform

One thing for certain......there is a wide range of opinion re the weekly race guide. Older folk speak in raptures about the Friday Flash and the good old days. My Dad and I loved the FF .....the turn and finish photos , the selection tables Dad always took the horse picked by only 1 of the 5 to 12 scribes ......Gloaming ,Templeton , Percy the Place punter ,Cosmic Court , The Joker etc.But jockeys often not shown and not with the fields , track work pretty patchy etc.No recent form for horses. We loved Hoofbeats too...just photos.I bought Bloodhorse.RIP Cozzie ! The latest Raceform /Best Bets available had all this info but better [not photos] ,articles on breeding , personalities ,trainers comments......getting better each week.Distribution wasn't the best initially . Trouble is ,most of us ....certainly those that post on here have been there and done that , we are experts and legends in our own lunchtimes.I meet some of you in TAB's and at races. Some of us relish being keyboard warriors. Some just enjoy winding up others. We resent the journalists who write the stories and then we cry when they become redundant.

  5. Evening all I've been very kindly asked to stay on and post my nonsense and I'm happy to do so. Ascot kicked off today and I'll write up some reviews when I get the chance to watch some of the action - I have to work for a living unfortunately. The declarations are through for Friday and my thoughts as follows: The Group 1 race is the Commonwealth Cup for the 3-y-o over 1200m. It's a fairly new race but has quickly established itself as a proper championship event. 17 go to post and it looks wide open. LOPE Y FERNANDEZ makes a quick re-appearance after running third in the Irish 2000 Guineas last Friday. MILLISLE comes from her seventh place in the 1000 Guineas and I think she has a big chance. PIERRE LAPIN is favourite and he was unbeaten in two runs as a juvenile winning the Group 2 Mill Reef at Newbury on his second start. It's been a long layoff but he looked all speed last year. Wesley Ward brings back last year's Queen Mary runner up KIMARI and he did it well at Oaklawn back in April but I prefer GOLDEN HORDE who kept the best of company as a juvenile including a win in the Richmond at Goodwood followed by two defeats to EARTHLIGHT, third in the Morny and second in the Middle Park. That's solid Group 1 form and at 11/2 he looks a tempting bet. The supporting Group 2 races start with the Norfolk Stakes over 1000m for the juvenile colts. 12 got to post and with the truncated start to the season there's much less form on which to rely than would normally be the case. EYE OF HEAVEN won at Newmarket and is favourite but THE LIR JET looked very good albeit in a probably weaker heat at Yarmouth. I've not been as taken by Wesley Ward's juveniles this season and GOLDEN JET looks vulnerable on his debut second over 900m on the Dirt. LIPPIZANER has placed twice for Aidan O'Brien and also has claims. This isn't a race in which to get too heavily involved in my view. The Hardwicke Stakes over 2400m is one of my favourite races of the meeting. It's basically Ascot;s equivalent of the Coronation Cup at Epsom's Derby meeting and is the stepping stone for the older horses toward the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes later in July. 11 go to post but it looks down to the three top rated. ANTHONY VAN DYCK won the Derby last year but it would be fair to say he wasn't one of the best winners of that race. That said, he put up a decent effort in second behind GHAIYYATH in the Coronation Cup at Newmarket. He won't mind the trip but it's 400m further for ELARQAM who was runner up in the Brigadier Gerard at Haydock the other day. DEFOE hated the firm ground at Newmarket and of course won this last year so I think he could be the one at 6s. The Queen's Vase over 2800m is another race which has had a few changes in recent times. It used to be over 3200m but that was considered too far too early for the 3-y-o and the cut in trip has brought the quality level up as well - KEW GARDENS won it in 2018. It's basically an early Leger trial. 9 go to post and I have to say it looks a very tricky puzzle. I thought BERKSHIRE ROCCO ran a huge race in defeat behind ENGLISH KING at Lingfield and he was (and is) one of my ideas of a Derby outsider. Al DABARAN represents Godolphin - he had some form in Group 3 races in France last year but that was on soft ground. The interesting runner is SANTIAGO from the Ballydoyle yard - he won a small maiden at Listowel having been beaten at Galway by ALPINE STAR, a filly of Jessica Harrington's I'm looking forward to seeing.

The times are changing , the pressure is growing , the Nat's have a winner . While surfing the channels yesterday I came across Todd Muller speaking in parliament , he was BRILLIANT . A great attack on the col , one that will have them worried , the fight is on , no longer is comrade cindy in the box seat . Anyone wanting to see this speech it's on facebook , keep in mind this guy is still learning and is probably at 80% of his best , look out when he is in top gear leading up to the election . Make no mistake the Nat's are in with a huge show of winning the election , before covid the polls put them in front , those days are quickly returning .

you had once expressed that we think for ourselves...in light of that.. i will attempt to express the understanding of the "DRAIN THE SWAMP" concept!! The essence of the Phrase is simply "exposing that which is hidden beneath" it can be explained using the TERM "deepstate" or again a spirit of Evil hidden deep within the Heart Draining the swamp is simply bringing everything to the surface so everything beneath is revealed a good reference is Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. From this, if we use the analogy of Individuals/Parents/Families/Groups/Communities/Town/Cities/Provinces/States/Countries/Nations/The World as being a bigger part of the whole collective Heart... you can see how easily pervasive policies albeit Laws can be to bring about corruption world wide... .. also let us not forget the criminal elements by the Big Elite Players who pull the levers of power!!!! Now consider the affect of policies albeit Laws setup to work against everything Righteous according to the Word of God!!! then you will begin to understand.. that this is a spiritual battle!!! Thus President Donald J Trumps mandate!! you will inevitably see this righteous battle taking place in various forms, various fronts with all manner of people taking upon themselves to Stand for what is RIGHTEOUS!! admittedly there is alot of confusion as to what is Righteous or what is right... but this again is the spiritual battle taking place in the hearts and minds of people, on a daily basis!! That again is why we participate in forums... to learn, to teach, to inform, to highlight, to expose and to take part in the battle!!

Sheer incompetence....they couldn't organize a root in a brothel with a fistful of $100.00 notes. Covid 19 coronavirus: Heather Du Plessis-Allan - Ministry of Health can't follow their own rules The thing that upsets me the most about the quarantine stuff up with those two women is the risk that this is going to make it harder to start opening our borders. It's happening already. I've seen an article arguing that we can't possibly "expect unrestricted international travel with places like Australia" if we can't do quarantining properly. And I've seen people arguing that compassionate exemptions should be cancelled across the board. But travel's not the problem. Compassionate leave is not the problem. The problem is the Ministry of Health. They have rules designed to make both of those things safe for us, and they fail to follow their own rules. This isn't the only problem we've had with the ministry's quarantine and managed isolation facilities. These places look like a joke. One News last week showed footage of people in "isolation" in a hotel mixing with each other in the smoko room. One of these people was in their first week of isolation, another was leaving to come into the community the very next day - which isn't doing much to avoid cross-infection from new arrivals, is it? One News also played footage of people being taken on managed walks through Auckland city and having unsuspecting punters walk right through the middle of the crowd supposed to be in isolation. We've had other people now saying they were also not obligated to do tests before leaving the hotels. The Ministry of Health is letting us all down. We could make excuses for it at the start when Ashley Bloomfield didn't have enough tests, and didn't know much PPE he had, and couldn't get his team to contact trace properly. It was starting to take the mickey when lock down was supposed to end but couldn't because the Health Ministry still couldn't contact trace properly, according to a leading epidemiologist. But now it's nearly three months since the start of lockdown and they still can't contact trace properly to even 20 per cent of what they still aren't testing properly. This isn't good enough. We shouldn't give up on a transtasman bubble and the jobs that would save. And we shouldn't give up on basic human decency like letting people say goodbye to loved ones. We should demand that the Health Ministry pick up its act and do its job properly. They are supposed to be our defence against further lockdowns and more economic damage and they are stuffing it up and letting us down.

I'm sorry Mr. Voice of Reason, but I feel your argument doesn't wash. I may not have driven in races myself but at least I know enough to realise that an inexperienced young trotter drawing one is hardly likely to be driven out at the start of a race. Unlike pacers, trotters often take a bit of careful nursing to get them balanced before they can be asked to stretch out. If you knew anything about betting on Harness Racing you would have been aware of that

People very rarely consider the meaning of NAMES in relation to their purpose in life... Donald Donald is an Anglicization of the Scottish Gaelic name, Domhanll, which means world-ruler John Trump's middle name is the English derivative of the Hebrew name, Yohanan, which means Graced by Yahweh Trump Drumpf is a corruption of Trumpf, which is derived from the German word, trumme, meaning drummer Thus Donald Trump's full name literally means: the ruler of the world, graced by God and a descendant of a drummer.

Agree Eljay, our leaders are totally detached from their Clients, the Punter I rarely bet in NZ but Pukekohe this Saturday will be my first go in NZ for 10 years. I bet in Victoria due to good fields, all trying, good jocks and superb media coverage in Aussie thru 6 websites I go to, I don't want shiny suit reports from Petone on the Tab site, they are dreaming if they think that fits the bill in 2020 Sadly we have dug a bloody big hole and will be very difficult to get out of and the recent decisions will make it even harder All very very sad

I never used a Best Bets (my decision) but I know from friends how much this publication is sorely missed. At a guess, I would think 50 to 75 pct of punters/racecourse attenders always had a copy. But today's suits & beancounters don't realise just how much a part of NZ racing this book was and I even seem to remember when the price went up, everyone moaned but they still bought it. Pity real racing people are not involved in the business decisions of the industry as I am sure if they were Best Bets would still be published and a major part of the racing picture.

Be more specific. What is it you want "printed format for" bear in mind you can print the racebook off the internet. THe RACEFORM consists of 80% printed racebook. My guess you only want the articles which includes selections, tips etc. Lets be realistic in these cost saving days. Having 100% articles, charts etc will attract advertisers. i.e. money.

Going by the various comments on this topic it is very much a case of : To each his own. However, I am intrigued by the reference to VIP punters and I think you may well be wrong, Lights Out. How much influence should the VIP punters have? When something called Flexibet was first presented to the TAB management by the Board it was rejected because of the negative response from the VIP punters. The TAB Board members thought otherwise and persisted. The result was: the introduction of Percentage Betting as it came to be known.

The problem with RACEFORM is Dennis Ryan. He just can't accept that the old Best bets Turf Digest form breakout has been supplanted by the internet. 37. I don't quite follow your logic. How is closing down three or four country tracks that are maintained by the locals with a lot of voluntary work and local sponsorship and moving their meetings to a central track, which then has to conduct say ten extra meetings, going to save the industry money in maintenance costs? I don't imagine Riccarton has the committee get out and paint the seats and mow the grass. They can't even get rid of their eyesore old stand. If a country track had an old stand like that a local farmer would turn up one day with his bulldozer. Compare Riccarton with Waimate. If I understand correctly the locals found $500,000 to replace their stand that got destroyed in a storm. Even rita and NZTR don't go so far as to claim the industry will save money in maintenance costs under the new regime. All they claim is that they will save owners money by not having to travel to country meetings, and the TAB will save money not having to service them. People also conveniently forget that probably $500,000 of local sponsorship will be lost to the industry per annum. Also remember that the only way some of the extra meeting sent to the big centres can be accomodated is by spending $30m or more on all weather tracks - bloody expensive way to save money.
    1 point
  38. How about this for a promotion. Instead (or in addition) of giving $30 free bets to those sitting at home how about if you are on course the TAB gives you a free $50 bet and 10% enhanced odds.

  39. I was talking to a horse trainer and he doubted whether Pukekohe track will stand up to the scheduled winter racing and advised Avondale is a way better winter racing track.

  40. We have to be realistic Shane. People have to realise what income we are generating. Back in the 80s a decent Saturday meeting would be doing about $2m off course and $300,000 on. Now they are doing what? $1.2m off and $80,000 on? I have no idea how close that is. Turnovers don't seem to be published anymore. And yet people expect stakes to be significantly higher than they were 30 years ago. And at the same time we are discouraging on course attendance. To be honest it is hard to see much future for the industry., It would be fascinating to see what could be achieved with dynamic leadership.

  41. With racing coming in from the UK at a time when for example the Derby would have been run out of all the rubbish overseas racing shown at least there is some interest there, Now at night here in NZ all the TAB's are closed. There is no phone betting, don't know about touch tone. Anyway the point is you cant place a bet without seeing the odds on your phone, computer or whatever. Then WHY WHY WHY do Trackside obliterate any view of the horses parading with the odds. With so many horses coming in from several months of non racing viewing the horses prior to the start a No1 priority rather than the form or odds. Hope when NZ racing restarts Trackside will take on board that punters would like to get a good look at the runners.
    1 point
  42. I'm with you on all of that but i simply don't trust the feckers , and if we come out of the present situation and racing continues to be managed along the same lines with no realignment of the various areas that need a good hard look at then we are never going to recover . The industry needs to start cutting it's cloth to fit .
    1 point
  43. They didn't go and ask punters before making above changes to operations and viewing , they didn't talk to coal face industry participants before track closure decisions . At the least have a conversation with your customers and the people that have some understanding of the product before you make changes . I wouldn't have minded if they had shown the management ability to get most decisions right in the past but they haven't , it's like the word " consultation ' is a dirty word .

  45. Free to air racing on TV , you could ring up and put a $1 bet on , you would speak to a person when you rang to put a bet on . Then it changed to pay to view thru Sky TV , You then had to have a minimum spend when you rang up and talked to an operator , then they got rid of operators and you had to use touch tone . All these killed off a huge percentage of older and lower socio ecomomic spenders .It didn't matter they couldn't afford sky they could at least listen on the radio , but raising minimum spend and then forcing people onto touch tone was all to much . Killed the $1/$2 bettor and then the ones that couldn't get to a TAB couldn't get to grips with touch tone . All these decisions were made apparently to help build their market . How do you think their market reacted ? . I know many elderly people who have stopped betting over the last 10 or so years as these strategies were implimented .
