Can imagine the chaos on Melbourne Cup Day or Derby day with the once a year race goers. I'm still of the old maxim " Keep it simple stupid " I'm fine with computers but don't own a cell phone let alone a smart phone, Would be a nightmare to """" it up or have it jam with hundreds of frustrated punters behind you, Tote Rage not Road Rage ! I will either put on bets at home before leaving or most likely stay home altogether when this comes in. What other business is so hell bent on alienating their core base ? It is like they all went to the Mad Hatter''s School Of Business.4 points

Thinking at cross purposes here. Can't really figure what you prefer. We do agree the SST's not much use at the races. I used to take a laptop to the races 25 years ago. No accessible internet but all the form data was on the computer database. Quicker and simpler than even now with the internet. Don't think I ever saw anyone else on track with a laptop. I actually ended up with Ivan Cosgraves CPM machine in the eighties. Remember him he was the one who started processing stats and Best Bets/Turf Digest purchased his weekly stats which appear for every runner, e.g. 50 starts 5 wins 5 2nds 7 red Stakes $666666 5 starts Heavy 3 wins etc etc. So what I am saying is there is one rule I have learnt, That is "Keep it Simple" If RITA are looking at technology for the racetrack the first thing is to figure what is the simplest way of placing a bet, Then call for solutions. Finally decide what is most cost effective. The answer will no doubt be far simpler and cheaper than they imagine.4 points

Spoke to friends high up in IT at the Council, they were adamant OIA and SFO should be looking into this debacle as there is NO WAY any system should cost this much, let alone 17 million to maintain each year. When I explained RITA can't implement the 12 week upgrades they nearly choked on their cognac, then were fuming that after such a waste , absolute waste of money , Racing gets a $72.5 million bailout from Govt. Luckily I explained it was only $50 million to rita ..... They were ropeable , more re the website costs so great to get an alternative view3 points -

Well done well deserved...hard work always pays off in the end my Mum always said.3 points -
Unfortunately even if it is a cheap option, the management at Rita will manage to turn it into an expensive dog of a system not fit for purpose. Just look at the present website as an example. Better systems around the world have been implemented for less than a quarter of what you paid for yours and they are not paying a 17m yearly fee on top. I hope Mckenzie is asking some brutal questions to the head of betting and other managers as to how and why this has occurred. Who did they get to test this new system and give feedback before going live?. Any punter worth their salt could have told them within a few minutes that this website would be a turnoff to the majority of people and why. Why are you paying a 17million a year fee when the whole system could have been implemented for less than 17million ? For what we have paid with continuing costs(Could be 200million plus with the 17m for 10years) we could have updated the dinosaur jetbet system to a 2020 equivalent and had the new website as well. What is the plan going forward? How are you going to increase turnover with an outdated system, a website that is not user friendly or conducive to placing a number of bets quickly and no marketing of racing on Radio,Paper or Free to air TV. So far we have had a huge reduction in the number of staff but not the management that got us into this mess in the first place. Why? Give us some idea/numbers on why you think the new AWT's will entice people to wager on them? I have no confidence in the Management of Rita because apart from having the communication skills of a dead cabbage, every bit of news we have seen lately has been to the detriment of racing.3 points

Today at Dalby Race 1. A nicely bred filly by Golden Archer/Kamadiva, with Balmerino, Vienetta, Bali Sugar in the pedigree. Trained by good Trainer, Rex Lipp. Called RED WABBAT. Currently around $3.50 or better, I suspect she’s at Dalby for a quick and easy kill. It’s a race with a $10k stake plus a QTIS $12k BONUS. From barrier 3 I expect her to go “woosh!”2 points

Best kept secret as far as punting goes. Since we did the comp where we took 4 runners per race and covered all bet types with imaginary piles of cash , but that sample of punters showed that the place6 was the most profitable bet type for most punters including myself.Since then I have taken place6s at sydney and melb every sat with a starting bank of $200 which is now just shy of $700 following the scattergun multiple runners every leg small% approach that you suggest in another thread. That competition was what swayed me to have a go so I will add to the chorus singing the praises of place62 points -

Agree they are totally inappropriate for race days with large volumes of bets, they are not intuitive, even the betting slips are inappropriate for them. Can't see anything but a disaster on course Saturdays unless they open a few windows, I'm not sure why clubs would do 3 windows a $10,$20 & $50 + windows again. Really can't believe this decision to rely solely on this technology which isn't a helluva alot better than the website. Not to mention , if punters can't get cash from their bets will they spend winnings on booze (a lot of clubs depend on this) at the club on course, will they turnover their bets like they used to, some punters if they want to get cash will have to travel long distances to cash in winning bets if they aren't up with the online or have an account.2 points

June at Wingatui was quite cold and muddy....they used to bring out the cut down drums and stoke up the fires to provide a bit of warmth for patrons ,then they would broadcast the Great Northern steeples on the loudspeakers. !967 when Eiffel Tower won the GN after running off on first round ,losing a ton of ground they still win as mentioned above.. That was amazing !Ringlock was 12 yr old running in race for 4th time.ET also brought down Kumai in the incident.....Kumai a Wingatui horse won 34 wins in a stellar career...19 on flat.Kumai won the McGregor Grant on last day easily beating Ringlock etc. 3 years earlier ET had won the Wellington Cup carrying 46.5 kilos.....ridden by my neighbour Midge Didham ! Bill Hillis rode and trained ET in his Northern win and was top trainer in NZ during 60's as were Hec Anderton,Rex Cochrane and Ted Winsloe ....all Southerners ! WEHazlett ,owner of ET was top owner in NZ for 4 or 5 years. Throw in Lucky Son [1965 Auckland Cup] and Southerners grabbed a lot of Auckland spoils at that time !1 point -

Media Deliberately Blurring Opinion and Fact What Better Way to Confuse the Public About Ardern's Government Performance than Media Bias? By Suze Who hasn’t resisted the urge to throw something at the television during the news? Half-truths and omissions that support Jacinda the Wonderful and lies to demonstrate Orange Man Bad will do that to you. Viewers with less than a cursory interest in politics are so acclimatised to media opinion being presented as fact that they assume everything they hear is factual. Media are content to look the other way, ignoring their professional responsibility to provide the public with factual news simply because they do not like the facts. The errors and omissions by NZ media are a separate topic. Bad Man Orange emanated from American media, and this week Trump took Twitter to task for its dishonest attempt at placing a foot in two opposing camps. Twitter has a solid footing in the opinion camp, but the problem arose when Twitter censored Trump’s posts, thereby acting as a publisher. Trump was justifiably annoyed when his tweeted opinions were censored under the guise of “fact checking”. An opinion does not require censoring. An opinion is open to discussion and can be agreed or disagreed with. Twitter can’t have it both ways, so Trump introduced legislation to remove some of the protections Twitter and Facebook previously enjoyed as social media opinion platforms. Trump opened them up to the same legal challenges afforded publishers. Trump accused the media of censoring right-wing opinion. We have the same problem here. Our Ardern-adoring media constantly bypass a raft of Ardern government failures in favour of international and local media opinion saying she is doing a great job. Opinion and fact about then Ardern government’s performance have been deliberately blurred by media to confuse the viewer. If the public really understood the extent of the Ardern government incompetence it is highly likely that they would not be re-elected. But if this government is left unchecked they could go down as the most destructive in our history. The following facts about failed promises and poor performance is nothing short of tragic from a government which promised openness and transparency. Aged Care David Clark, the Minister of Health, made a commitment prior to the election in a speech he gave in Christchurch that the first Budget of a Labour-led Government would see the appointment of an Aged Care Commissioner. Child Poverty Promised to end child poverty which worsened with 11,000 more children in material hardship and 15,000 more children living in welfare dependent homes. Seven out of nine child poverty indicators increased. COVID-19 Did not go “hard or early” Failed to close the borders in March as advised. Instead implemented sustained lockdown causing economic hardship which could have been avoided if the borders had been closed earlier Estimated deaths from hospital postponed cancer checks and surgeries under lockdown will exceed the 22 deaths from Covid-19 which all were aged people with pre-existing conditions Inflated daily COVID-19 infection numbers by including “probable cases” Inflated the death count by including 96-year-old Eileen Hunter’s death whose death certificate did not state COVID because she had recovered Did not re-evaluate our lockdown after it was revealed 80,000 anticipated deaths was a grossly inflated figure based on faulty overseas modelling by the Royal Institute Refused 24 out of 24 requests to visit dying relatives during lockdown after telling NZ to “be kind” during the lockdown. Economy GDP dropped under the CoL. December 2019 GDP figures showed New Zealand went into a ‘GDP per person recession’ in the first half of the year, and continue to show an economy that is failing to deliver higher living standards for New Zealanders. The government is relying entirely on population growth to drive the economy. Government debt skyrocketed during COVID-19 when the government sprayed around borrowed money. A newspaper reported that we are entering the “sharpest, deepest economic slump ever.” New Zealand ranks fourth last in the OECD for labour productivity growth, and last for multi-factor productivity growth, according to economist Michael Reddell, based on OECD data. Health and education are gobbling up more of the budget as the population ages, with less and less to show for it Bob Jones says “In one year, New Zealand has blown 30 years of hard-fought fiscal rectitude.“ Job growth more than halved from 10,000 new jobs a month under National to 4,000 a month under Labour Banning oil & gas exploration caused a $30 billion loss to Taranaki and increased the price of imported fuel State Services Minister Chris Hipkins promised in mid-2018 this Government would “reduce the reliance on expensive consultants and contractors, saving taxpayers many millions of dollars a year”. At that time, the total spend across all 30-plus public sectors was just over $550m for 300 plus working groups Business confidence was at a ten year low before COVID-19 lockdown. More industrial strikes in Labour’s first year than in the last ten years. Education Shut down Charter Schools Failed to deliver 100 per cent qualified ECE teachers Teacher strikes Failed to reduce teacher/child ratios in early learning. Environment Failed to successfully implement its promise to plant a billion trees Plastic bag ban left customers in the lurch during COVID-19 when supermarkets banned re-useable shopping bags The waste from single use PPE gear has astronomically increased with tonnes of additional daily landfill and no message from the government about managing additional PPE waste from dentists, doctors, hospitals and medical centres. Health Promised to address youth suicide by providing free counselling for under 25s Failed to implement a surgical mesh register Failed to increase breast screening to age 74 Auckland Hospital is investigating four maternal deaths since March 23 under lockdown (A newspaper report) DHB cost blowouts Insurer warns of high risk of suicide by failed business owners. Housing Labour’s flagship housing policy, KiwiBuild, flopped Cost of rental housing increased an average of $50 a week after passage of legislation that made rental properties uneconomic so landlords sold rental properties State housing waiting lists increased from 6,000 to a record high of 14,500 in less than two years under Labour. Inequality Promised to address inequality, but Maori are still over-represented in poor socio-economic outcomes and account for more than 50% of the prison population, despite being only 14% of the general population. Infrastructure Cancelled “all roads of national significance” but two years later reversed that terrible decision 2018 census disaster under the CoL’s watch. Legislation Promised no new taxes but implemented seven including a petrol tax Promised a capital gains tax but thankfully failed to implement it Failed to strengthen the OIA as promised Botched legislation on gun law reform Passed legislation removing freedom and giving police and authorised person(s) the right to enter private homes without a warrant. Ministerial Competence New government failed to count heads and were forced to concede more opposition members on select committees to have Mallard elected speaker unopposed Phil Twyford and Megan Woods both demoted during the KiwiBuild debacle Ian Lees-Galloway granted residency to convicted criminal Karel Sroubek in 2018 Meka Whaitiri stood down for shouting and manhandling a staff member and fired from the cabinet a month later Claire Curran stripped of ministerial duties and subsequently resigned after using her computer for ministerial duties and failing to disclose meetings with Carol Hirschfeld Justice Minister Andrew Little was only prevented from repealing the three strikes law by Winston Peters National complained that undisciplined CoL ministers missed or were late for select committee meetings and forced the issue by walking out of an important select committee meeting on the health system and funding new cancer drugs. This sent dozens of submitters back home when a quorum was not formed within the allowable time frame, wasting time and money. The Minister of Health broke his own rules three times during Covid-19 lockdown. National Security NZ is the only member of Five Eyes not taking China to task over Hong Kong security law. Police Promise of 1800 new police in three years was declared unattainable Police botched the implementation of clunky new gun control laws and intimidated legitimate gun owner Dieuwe De Boer and his family Guns handed in to police with very casual gun custody measures were stolen by criminals. Ardern received global acclaim for her hug-a-Muslim-athon after Christchurch, raised New Zealand’s international profile (albeit for flimsy reasons), and provided financial assistance to employees during COVID-19. A pretty shabby offset to the long list of government fails. The ledger is heavily balanced against Ardern’s government but you won’t hear this from mainstream media.1 point

Here here. Where have you been . Why do we need to be dependent on RITA and be at their beck and call. Lets go it alone. Create our own media channels be it radio, tv, video what ever. User pay or not. We have the expertise on all fronts (personal and access to funding) which simply needs to be coordinated, We need to stop bitching individually and bring together our collective strength. The same applies in politics where our co ordinated strength, if used right would give us our own MP. For now lets try and reinstate our media coverage and subject to the outcome move on from there. Before progressing we need to see that this is what you really want.? Email me before 4 May if you support the concept and the responses will determine future action. To begin I envisage a Steering Committee of nine people of mixed denomination to kick start this campaign and co opt along the way. I would like this to simple and effective as the common goal is known. Ivan W Mc Nicholl1 point

Leggy, do you have a breakdown. Could a club swim against the tide and have their own tote staff. At CJC they have 2 units on ground floor and only a few use. They will need 8 machines and have to run training courses. I have my doubts about it all. I will probably put my bets on at the local Tab and watch from home. In reality will probably just bet in Australia on my Aussie account and not bother attending locally. No attendance and no churn and the lack of churn will hurt local clubs. A very poor decision which probably should have been feed in over time. Meantime upper HO costs untouched FFS1 point
