R.I.P. Mrs Cubes
chelseacol and 3 others reacted to Mr Spyro for a topic
So sorry to hear that about the obviously much loved Mrs Cubes. Always enjoyed the witty style of writing about her and yourself. My parents met at 15 and were one week short of 68 years when my dad dies. I know the stronger the love , the harder it becomes. May these messages at least bring a very small amount of comfort.4 points -

Some lovely tributes there... And to a lady that, I am guessing, few of us (and certainly not me) had ever met. Racing has some great people in its ranks - such a shame that we never hear much about them...3 points -

M understanding is that clubs pay the on course costs so what does that have to do with Rita. The reality is the terminals are old and failing and no provision made in the new whizz bang failure of a computer. Go figure and they pay 330k per week for the maintenance of the new whizz bang failure. Wake me up from the nightmare Bring on the Auzzie Corps, just gift our shit box to them as it has no value2 points -
Would 2-4m in cost savings save Radio Trackside? Far more important for the industry than having 10 CEOS, etc when 1 or 2 will suffice.2 points

Correct, this thread was about how decisions that seem to make sense based on numbers but numbers do not tell the full story. A woman was told she only had 6 months to live. “Oh my God!” said the woman. “What shall I do?” “Marry an accountant,” suggested the doctor. “Why?” asked the woman. “Will that make me live longer?” “No,” replied the doctor. “But it will SEEM longer.2 points -
When Air NZ changed from personalised ticketing to self service, there were quite attractive people there to help. When I go into a supermarket t the self service machines, there's a person to help. When I go to the TAB..........?2 points

I don't have a break down but just divide 4.1m by the number of racedays. The major cost is getting the TAB staff and all the equipment (including the big truck with all the satellite gear etc.) to the raceday tracks, setting up the terminals, links, getting everything talking to each other etc. That's always or mostly the day before so often overnight accommodation and expenses for those staff etc. etc. It's clearly not worth it.1 point

Cost to a club would be: No of operated terminals x 8 hours x close to minimum wage Plus cost for the operating company (company that organises it for the club). Costs for an industry day about $2K, costs for a large premier day up to $20K1 point -

Is now a good time to restructure Clubs?
Pam Robson reacted to nomates for a topic
It's gona be a fuckin short running show then . Ticket sales are already poor .1 point -
If it took this form or something along those lines all 3 committees could have a member on the racing board , whatever shape that could take with other appointees as required to balance it out . Harness and greyhounds would have their representatives as well . This would mean racing had racing people having a say in decisions regarding their industry . All we have at the moment is non racing people taking wild stabs in the dark with a very blunt knife . And most of the time just poking themselves in the eye . I know where the blunt knife needs to be poked .1 point

Is now a good time to restructure Clubs?
fermoy reacted to Pam Robson for a topic
Southern racing has been under the umbrella of Gallop South for a while, others may know more about its structure and efficacy, but to me, looking on, it seems to be a good initiatve. Otago were part of the whole for a while but not now, again, some will know more about that than I do. Having regional 'clusters' was encouraged a while ago and Canterbury Racing played its part, but things seemed to drift away and now its all very parochial again. It's a bit like the Racing Bureau concept; they do a great job and no criticism implied there, but I'm a bit lost as to where the cost savings come in, I'm not aware that any club secretary has lost his job or has had his workload reduced as a result.1 point -
NZTR are the problem there, its their vision and initiatives that are supposed to fill in around the advice from the accountants, but alas there is no vision, strategy or initiative from that lot. Saundry thinks $15k stakes, paying down to 14th and free racing was an NZTR vision, the industry been screaming it out to them for years!1 point

There looks to be $2.5m-4m of annual cost savings to the industry in restructuring the clubs, alot of these club administrators are dead serious in saving money and spending it as they all appear very pro asset sales, so here is another opportunity for the industry to be restructured. Why aren't NZTR doing something useful around this?1 point

Hang in there Pottsie.......anonymous posters find it easy to put the slipper.....often driven by jealousy ! As Ernest Rutherford , famous Nelson born physicist ,is quoted as saying "Gentlemen,we have run out of money ,its time to start thinking ". Of interest too is that when NZ Racing reached desperation point in 2018 , after various NZ Racing folk and Breeders on NZRB and Code Boards had neither the answers , courage or internal fortitude to make and implement changes they [THru WP] brought in John Messara latterly known as an Aussie breeder but prominent as a gifted and well qualified Public Accountant. And Messara did it for nothing ! Kiwi's still find his suggestions hard to accept so we WISH another Aussie Peter V'Landys who is seen as both the saviour of Victorian racing and the NRL , would help us ! Of course Peter V'Landys is an Accountant as well !!!!1 point -

But this is the racing game and when it comes to listening to accountants it is best to ask the accountant if he knows the difference between a caslick and a cannon bone. If the accountant tells you that a caslick is similar to an orthodontal operation on a Racing Board executive (that is, stitching up a xxxx never you mind) give that bean counter some credence.1 point -
We don't need bookmakers. Just cut the amount of exotic bets and go back to fairly simple bet types. Look to merge with Australia to create a trans tasman pool. The TAB can support racing if done right. The Hong Kong system works pretty well!!1 point

The point is Bernard is quoting the advice from their accountants. We all know that will only give you half the picture. He should balance that against what his Sales/Marketing team are advising, presuming he has asked. The whole industry seems to be about cutting cost but that should be balanced building revenue.1 point -
The Chinese have it right..... China has accused the US of being responsible for the spread of the virus on its own soil, attributing the outbreak to American "politicians who lie". Earlier this month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Mr Trump was trying to mislead the public, smear China and "shift the blame for [the US's] own incompetent response".1 point

Thanks for letting me know what you think of my occupation, accountant, and realise many think we are accuntants. I've spent $thousands of dollars over the last 30 years to TAB and racing and know of even in little Hawera of accountants whom have owned and raced horses. Yes there are some of the old boring accountants, but the new breed are far more fun to be with, eg Luke Kemeys as an example. Cheers and happy punting today.1 point -

Saddened to hear of Mike's passing, had spoken a few times and i loved following the martin dogs.Mike and Linda always had a good dog born and bred at home of course too. He was a fan of mine which was a priviledge as clearly he knew what it took to be a good greyhound caller. Taken far too soon and he will be sadly missed.Deepest sympathy to Linda,Brian and the whole martin family on your loss. NZ greyhound racing is all the poorer without him. Jason Teaz1 point

Liz I haven’t been on the Committee for a couple of years as I moved to the Bay Of Plenty. So not privy to current info. However, I do know that in my time there, what land was sold was at much better than values quoted in some quarters. As that info will remain confidential, it will not be disclosed. But Wobbles was talking about less than CV, strange really that he should mention that measure. As the Club created the titles for the land sold whilst I was on the Committee, therefore it didn’t have a CV per se. Hence my comment about joining the dots. It is disappointing that this platform does have a lot of information discussed at length at times, when so much of the details in discussion are far removed from being accurate. Hyperbole is always good for a bit of dramatic effect I guess. Cheers John1 point -

Rosanowski
The White Poodle reacted to Lowdown for a topic
Was anyone else unfortunate enough to see the Rosanowski-Cole interview on Trackside today around 1pm? It's like Rosanowski read this thread and thought 'let's take it up another notch'. It was truly vomit inducing. Rosanowski interviewing Cole pointing out how awesome he is, Cole agreeing that he's hotshit, saying he will win 1000 races next season "I promise you that". Rosanowski pointing out how awesome Craig Rendle is, Cole agreeing saying he was happy to go into business with "such a great guy". Then Rosanowski says (I'm paraphrasing) "are you concerned that you're dominating and pushing everyone else out or do you think they should just get better and reach the bar you've set" to which Cole suggests everyone needs to lift their game cos he started from the bottom , he then talks about "sacrifices" and being willing "to borrow money and borrow more money" , by this stage my eyes hurt from rolling them so much and my mouth is full of vomit. Rosanowski can redeem himself and this cock sucker interview if he follows up with...But Brendon you borrowed and borrowed and then went BANKRUPT and have been living a lie under Lisa Cole's name every since. But Brendon you are currently facing criminal charges for cheating/animal cruelty. But Brendon , Craig Rendle hooked you (and himself) up with all that frozen semen when abusing his position as Chairman with his first dibs 'sales'. But Brendon..... But No, it was a big Rosanowski/Cole wank fest. I'm not even involved in the game anymore, I'm not a 'sore loser'. But I know Cole, and I see him for what he is, and I feel sorry for all the decent , honest participants in this game that have to sit there and listen to his bullshit. And I feel sorry for other people like Rosanowski that buy into all this bullshit Cole spins and paint him as some kind of legend of the sport,he's the opposite,he's a scourge.1 point -
Yes, and the Rita Guys just don't; get it. They going to kill Betting turn over by 50% or more maybe?. I had an elderly owner call me today. He has a $50 bet each Saturday. Say no fields in paper no more.No radio trackside. No tipsters etc Said to hell with the TAB. He rang them to complain, asked who do I write to, etc, told no one there that would reply. So another lost customer. The Shop Window Mr. McKenzie has Griffie all over it. It's starting to smell before we even start racing.0 points
