  1. Wasn't that the mandate given to RITA by Winston Peters when he legislated them to take over on 1st July 2019? It's like John Allen has been reincarnated. RITA needed Covid 19 to make them wake up and realise what a pandemic actually is and to click that maybe the Racing Industry was already in that state before the virus struck! Pandemic definition is - occurring over a wide geographic area and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population Examples of Pandemic : Research from the 'Deloitte & Messara Reports' paint a bleak picture of the economic toll that the NZ Racing Industry will suffer for years to come due to the TAB's 'pandemic' of employing brain dead CEO's and General Management resulting in closed racetracks, breeding numbers down by hundreds as well as huge numbers of Industry related job losses. In one small bizarre way the NZ TAB showed the Nation that when either a 'man made Industry pandemic' or a 'virus pandemic' hits the end result is much the same. Now if the NZ Racing Industry had seen the 'pandemic' coming and put the NZ TAB General Management into 'Lockdown' maybe things could have got better a lot sooner rather than later and the fallout damage would have been a lot less to endure and the recovery rate greatly shortened.

    New vision for racing

Not sure about WFA myself , i'd be more inclined to sort out the ratings system , stop hammering horses for mediocre wins or the biggest crime weighing down horses just for being consistent . We have a declining horse population so we have to come up with solutions to extend horses racing careers . We have way more slow ones than fast but they have a place . This is what the hierarchy needs to be doing , going out and asking for ideas because their are plenty out there . Your idea might not be the perfect solution nor mine but with more people bashing them around and refining them better solutions can be found for NZ racing than presently being promoted by NZTR/RITA . Will they ever be big enough to say we need to go out to our participants and ask for help , i doubt it .

  4. This 'solution' seems awfully like a beekeeper choosing to keep the queen and drones alive while killing off the worker-bees. We all know what is going to happen next with such a strategy, don't we?

  5. FFS, any retard can see Ellerslie needs to race at least every 2nd week all year round. They are the flagship of the Industry and if they can't race every 2nd week then what chance are we as an Industry ...

  6. Agree Dave but potentially a new major training centre, the simple fact is no one goes to Ellerslie it is a white elephant having fucked up tradition, Derby Day Auckland Cup day etc, so it will never happen at Ellerslie, Ruakaka has immense appeal, just gotta think differently The Avondale Club is very smart and there is no way Arc is on their agenda Ellerslie can have zilliions in the bank but they get no one attending, it is a joke to suggest they are a flagship as they aint

"Despite far reaching efforts to reduce costs across the TAB, including salary reductions, staff taking leave and reducing all non-essential expenses, it simply was not enough to offset the blow (Bayliss knew all about blow) Covid-19 has had, and will have, on our industry," executive chair Dean McKenzie said. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12334597&fbclid=IwAR1POn-S8u3ZDmjoMwAHhNkRoMD2DjVt0u26VK_S47zRlgH4b6GPw1KfrG4

    Jason Waddell off To Oz

I have no doubt that Jason's exceptional riding ability can see him compete at the highest level in Australia. He is coming off the back of a record breaking season here in NZ. After resuming in September following six months off after having surgery in just seven months he smashed his record for stakes winners and stake money for a season. Eleven G1 rides saw him with 4 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, 3 fourths and a fifth. His last three rides before Covid were successive winners at Trentham including the G1 NZ Oaks on Jennifer Eccles. With the uncertainty here in NZ with regard to our racing the time is right for Jason to have a crack in Australia and I look forward to seeing him being successful over there as well. Good luck Jason.

    Oh dear

From NZ Racing and News:- Further testing of a breeding mare previously imported from the United Kingdom has confirmed the horse is carrying the exotic organism Theileria equi. The mare in question was imported under New Zealand protocols last year from France as a maiden and has been resident at Cambridge Stud since her arrival in February 2019. Cambridge Stud CEO Henry Plumptre has reported she was purchased at the Arqana sale in December 2018, was negative in a pre-sale test, negative prior to going into quarantine and was negative under New Zealand protocols, before departing the United Kingdom. The mare had a suspected positive test as part of standard export certification prior to onward shipment to Australia, and further blood tests were taken. Theileria equi (T. equi) can cause anaemia and is spread from animal to animal by ticks or by shared equipment such as needles or dental equipment. It is not infectious directly between horses. The ticks that are known to transmit the disease are a species not present in New Zealand. To date it is uncertain if the species that are widespread in New Zealand are capable of spreading T.equi although it is known they can spread infections with other strains of Theleria. Although it is not highly infectious, Australia does not have Theileria equi and exports currently require certification that New Zealand is free of the disease to accept horses from here. The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) market access specialists and live animal exports team have been working closely with Australian authorities to agree alternative assurances to allow exports to continue. Good progress is being made on the development of a testing regime to support this. Two shipments of horses to Australia this week have had to be held while negotiations continue. The New Zealand Equine Health Association (NZEHA) and MPI are aware this situation is causing some concern to the country’s significant equine sector and work is underway to resolve things as quickly as possible to ensure ongoing horse exports are not interrupted. There has not been a case of Theileria equi in New Zealand before. Continued on page 7 Monday 25 May 2020 8 Imported mare confirmed positive for Theileria equi Biosecurity NZ and MPI will continue to work with international partners to understand and investigate the situation. Veterinarian investigators from MPI are currently sampling horses at Cambridge Stud as a precaution. The affected mare is contained on the farm and will not be moved from the property while investigations continue. The mare tested negative for Theileria equi within the required 21 days before its import to New Zealand. Under international protocols, testing from certified laboratories is part of the horse importation process. Part of that importation process also requires that the horse is treated for ticks. Prior to export, the horse was quarantined in isolation for three weeks and underwent examinations. On arrival in New Zealand, the horse was in post-arrival quarantine and inspected by an equine veterinarian. An MPI vet checks arriving horses on arrival at the airport, at the quarantine location within 24 hours of arrival, around the middle of quarantine and then prior to release. “Negotiations with Australia to resume trans Tasman transport appear to be progressing positively,” New Zealand Equine Health Association Chairman Ivan Bridge said. “MPI Market Access are working on that right now and what that will most likely mean is we will be required to have two piroplasmosis tests carried out on a single blood for all horses being exported to Australia in the short to medium term.” Bridge said an immediate focus was to facilitate the transport of in-foal mares across the Tasman, which may only travel up to 300 days in foal. “One of our priorities is ensuring those mares covered in the first five days of last breeding season are able to get to Australia by June 26. “There is also a shipment of horses bound for Hong Kong via Sydney on June 7, so there is some haste.” “Post Covid 19 air freight access is another complicating factor, almost the perfect storm”. The New Zealand equine industry has signed a Government Industry Agreement (GIA) for Biosecurity readiness and response. GIA operates as a partnership between primary industry and government to manage pests and diseases that could badly damage New Zealand’s primary industries, economy, and environment. Under GIA, Signatories share the decision-making, responsibilities and costs of preparing for – and responding to – biosecurity incursions. By working in partnership, industry and government can achieve better biosecurity outcomes. “Because that mare is a positive, it becomes a response,” Bridge said. “The contact groups have been investigated by MPI veterinarian investigators, samples have been taken which will be analysed over the next week and we are fortunate that the stud concerned has such a professional approach to horse health. “MPI have been very complimentary regarding their detailed record-keeping and they are such a farm that had a mare been slightly off-colour, it would have been identified immediately. “I take a lot of confidence from the fact there have been no horses diagnosed with piroplasmosis symptoms on the property, or in the country for that matter, and the mare has been there since the beginning of 2019, so one would anticipate we are reasonably safe. “We are hopeful that the results from the samples of the cohort mares and other horse population on the property will come back negative, which will set a platform for us to move forward quite quickly and provide our trading partners some confidence.” – NZ Racing Desk

  20. A whistle blower would get slaughtered. They would get no support from anywhere. Winston would turn his back. He is only involved in Legislation not the day to day running of Racing. Recognised Industry Organisations(RIO's) would start shaking at the knees. A whistle blower would be on their own. Until organisations like NZTR are made to be accountable and have to work with in the rules of racing this isn't going to happen and nothing will change. I mentioned on another thread about Bernard Hickey of the Owners Assoc talking about the 1.7 million owed in Nomination and Acceptance fees. $750,000 of that owed by Trainers to NZTR. Has this been allowed to happen to control the Trainers Association? While Tony Pike and Nigel Tiley are really nice people, when push comes to shove there has not been any shove.

  31. Dunno who you consider the flagship to be Tom ? But ARC does still hold 5 of NZ's top 10 days as far as turnover concerned. Plus it has the Great Northern which is still a great race on a pretty good course ! And it averaged 3,000 folk per meeting over 19 meetings ....not bad. Decrease in oncourse attendees no worse than other tracks ! The top trainers seem to still rank it #1. And the public facilities would be right up there with best in NZ. Brilliant new stables area and good viewing . Unsure what upsets you about the place. Have you been to Ellerslie lately ? What courses round out the top 5 in NZ ?

The comments by Cyril Rioli struck a chord. About ‘concentrating on older horses that can race year after year’. I’m a kiwi based in Australia, semi-retired. Previously had a long small-time involvement in NZ racing, both thoroughbred and standardbreds. Now have time to follow the comments on Race Café periodically. And Australian race results and news. The main harness track in NSW, Menangle, race at least twice a week, once for better class horses and once for the lesser lights. Last Tuesday’s meeting for the lower grade horses included a Claimer. The 9-horse field raced for a $A7,000 odd stake. The interesting thing about the race, for me, was that the average number of lifetime starts for the 9 runners was around 140 starts. The most was 215, the least 91. The winner was having his 191 start. Every horse was averaging over $1,000 in earnings per start. So seemingly, pretty much all paying their way. Three of them have earned over $40,000 each this season. 5 of the field were NZ bred. There was one 10yr old, one 9yr old, three 8, three 7, and a lone six year-old. On the humorous side, ironically, one of the NZ’ers was called Underworked, he was only on start 141! Another horse, the favorite, led but faded in the straight to last. His excuse might have been that he was the novice of the field having only his 91st start. So, on reflection, what can be learned? First of course it illustrates the durability of the standardbred. Second it shows that with flexible programming there is a place for all. These warriors had a competitive race. Seems like there is a suitable race at Menangle for these horses every week. In summary Cyril has a good point. Not necessarily concentrating on such horses but making sure there is a better balance of programming and adequate opportunities for all.

  48. Before Stables jumps up RIDA is not misspelt It is the new Racing Industry destruction agency...many would see this as most apt.Its strange that Australia has more racecourses than NZ by a bigger proportion of the population even now and the ones they close eg Harold Park are the big inner city ones which no longer are fit for purpose.

  49. I reckon RITA picked up a basket case, hence the reason RITA was brought it. There is two areas I would like to have seen more from RITA in: outsourcing communication (very poor in last month when needed the most) The outsourcing feasibility was actually done by the applying outsourcing applicants. It was two years ago now that SportsBet put together a presentation in Cambridge about what they would offer NZ racing to be their outsourcing partner. Working on memory here: NZ racnig would continue to receive same return for 15 years at minimum NZ racing would joint venture any income above the minimum. This would come from the growth that SportsBet would generate. MASSIVE upfront sign on payment. This would have been put into prize money.
