It also never tested the system thoroughly with those who had to use it to actually deliver the product before it went live. Instead a small selection of people were hand picked for a minimal number of "test runs". Unsurprisingly those who were chosen were known to not rock the boat. Anyone, even with vast experience, who expressed doubts or concerns and options for solutions was ignored or removed entirely from the mainstream team. As a result the huge team that was brought in to develop the product had extremely minimal knowledge of how the existing system functioned for a start. Additional "Workarounds" had to be put in place even prior to the systems introduction, adding substantial time to numerous tasks. Even at the huge expense it was, it was always a bandaid fix, a new platform which still has to link to the outdated(1970s?) original system to operate. Therefore it was always going to be both an additional cost and impossible to create a fluidly functioning product. Any upgrade should have addressed the ancient system and terminals 1st to be effective. Experienced IT experts left in droves as they saw the writing on the wall, as it seems have most with a true passion for racing. An exit from the sinking ship, the inebitible. Intolerable to see when you understand at all the reality on the ground for the heart of the industry, whose exponentially harder work delivers the product. Little chance to make any profit in NZ anymore, but those who have a true passion for the sport and these amazing animals, a way of life. Doomed to fail, poorly informed, and even as a bandaid fix at unreasonable cost, a complete and utter failure. Unacceptable, and it will not change until those that at the top who seem entirely untouchable , blind and deaf are gone. Outsource. The industry cannot afford to do what needs to be done to fix this failed administrative mess. RITA doesn't even possess the common sense to know that cutting exposure, coverage, service and access to your core product and revenue streams FIRST is the WORST thing you could do.7 points

Ken Rutherford's way forward - and it won't go down well with everyone
THE TORCH and one other reacted to Tauhei Notts for a topic
I have read Ken Rutherford's article several times now. I think the most pertinent point is that "when he commenced setting fixed odds in 2001 it was run by passionate people in it more for the love of the game than the money." Then over the next 19 years the TAB has morphed into a huge bureaucratic empire run by highly educated people there for the money, not for the love of the game. I have seen it so many times in so many areas. ENTHUSIASM. It is very difficult to build it up. It is a piece of piss to destroy it. And the ever burgeoning bureaucracy destroyed it. This cancer has grown on the TAB body ever so slowly over the past 19 years and I fear it is a terminal illness. The incremental growth of that cancer has been so slow and so prolonged that people like me did not step up and say, twelve years ago;' "Put a stop to this idiocy right bloody now, you imbeciles."2 points -

Sorry Red Rum. I was really on to this one 3rd up, a claim, great trainer, loves FLEMINGTON and an unbelievable price. What I just don't get is none of them have the balls to just tell us what's going on either way with any bloody thing. They probably have no idea, but surely they could present a few scenarios, no one expects miracles .. be nice if they thought about their customers. This is not new, Covid has just brought it to the surface. 3 basics of any business dealing with customers ... honesty, respect, communication. How many of those 3 can we tick off from the TAB over the years ??2 points

Overlord looks a good bet, but it was in the best part of the ground last start. I like Opacity at odds. It made a big run in ground where no runners were making headway earlier in the day.2 points -
Their whole mentality about not consulting the wider community in racing is they think if your a no name , smaller , battling trainer/owner/ small club administrator then you don't carry any weight and your opinion doesn't carry any weight . Some of the best thinkers i have met have tended to be low profile characters and not ones to push there opinions on others but when asked for opinions usually have something worth listening to , and most have been no name , smaller , battling racing people . Racing people at all levels know and understand their sport , not just the ones on high .2 points

77 racedays
john legend reacted to Mikie for a topic
In my father’s fathers time there was 1 Raceday in the District. Everyone went to the day, it was an occasion not to be missed Then the number of days was increased to 2. Everyone was joyous, twice the occasion Then the number of days increased to 4. More joy, 4 reasons to get dressed up and enjoy a day at the races Fast forward, 77 racedays at Addington. How many will go on the 77th day? The 76th? The 75th? Racing, apart from the Group days, will become a made for TV walk to wall product. Perhaps there’s nothing wrong with that? But increasing participation as a result of attendance won’t be happening will it? Mikie1 point -
HRNZ vision Statement
meomy reacted to john legend for a topic
The vision statement for HRNZ READS AS FOLLOWS....HARNESSING EXCITEMENT SERVICE INTEGRITY AND PROSPERITY FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS AND CUSTOMERS.... would all Board Members have the guts to front up to those trainers in the central districts and explain how they are honouring their own vision statement. ? Dozens of these trainers from wellington to hunterville and up to New Plymouth have established facilities for harness racing at large personal cost to enable them to provide horses for racing centred on Manawatu Raceway. To give 70 licences to ak and Cambridge and nil to Manawatu or any racetrack in the area is in stark contrast to the vision statement and could be open to legal challenge if not corrected . We all accept there is pain and suffering but lets not reward areas and close others down. It simply is a disgrace and maybe national awareness through publicity is the only remedy.1 point -

That is a stupid argument. It doesn't cost HRNZ or the TAB anything if trainers and owners from outside the district decide to race at Manawatu. How do you think they are going to be able to hold a meeting in Nelson. Will the NZ cup only be eligible to Canterbury horses.Do you want to kill off all owners, trainers etc in the smaller districts just to keep the major areas happy with less traveling. How long will harness racing last if this is allowed to happen.1 point

GROW UP RITA AND NZ GOVERNMENT.
dock leaf reacted to shaneMcAlister for a topic
The government has give the DIA $2.5M to stop New Zealanders betting offshore. This is such a flawed way of thinking: How can we expect to stop NZ punters punting overseas but yet we want overseas punters to punt with NZ TAB? Can't have it both ways. This would enable RITA/TAB to believe their betting platform is acceptable With a monopoly customer service deteriorates (hard to imagine but it would) Odds would get worse People find a way around it anyhow As a participate in NZ racing I believe you can contribute to NZ racing by owning or punting. So why should punters be treated differently than horse owners. You can own a horse in NZ and punt where you get the best treatment. Alternatively if the Government is going to stop us punting offshore because it hurts the local industry, maybe we should go one step further and stop NZers owning horses offshore. Time to grow up and realise the country and world we live in. The options going forward to look at have to be: Outsourcing Racefield legislation Letting offshore bookies here (they are anyway) and then clubs can get some sponsorship from them. True what you say Jape and that lifeblood you speak of comes from the every day punter and the big wigs seem to have forgotten that along the way somewhere with their inferior offerings in terms of information a punter might use to increase the turnover part of that revenue equation. Punters don't like being taken for granted and treated like they are just mugs (hence the old saying "mug punter" I guess). If they don't offer a good service alongside the product then they can't expect support from us no matter how much we love the sport itself. You're dead right about the comments being time-consuming too. I am sad to see racing dying a death by a thousands cuts due to mismanagement by the bean counters and so-called CEOs.1 point -

It has everything to do with the chain of events & closure of race tracks with Covid19. It's how this document which has based on the balance of probabilities been used by the NZ Government for Covid19 has been interpreted. 1 metre rule became 2 metre rule and the chain of events that lead to lockdowns across the world which saw Racing shut doors to firstly the public then the live racing and associated industry participants. New Zealand followed the Imperial College of London paper trail for Covid19. Suggest you read our other posts about those involved in the academic world & their backgrounds Mouthpiece Pink haired "scientist" Siouxsie Wiles went to IC in 1990's which is where Professor Lockdown Neil Fergusson was until recently. Don't you remember how we were all told, "YOU MUST WASH YOUR HANDS/ STAY HOME/ YOU MUST STAY 2 METRES SPACED OUT"? Perhaps those with political connections to the likes of Winston Peters and others could ask him if it's in the files Labour Govt refuse to disclose they have been asked for.1 point

I hope you caught up with the FormGuides for both Cambridge and Addington today. They are severely abbreviated but every dog is covered and once you get the hang of it, you can follow it quite well. There is a huge amount of info there. Btw, I presume you people check out the Punters Lounge each day to find out what is available. If not, you should. I hope you have been taking note of the Comments Lines for all meetings except Addington. As well, there have been very good interviews. One with Marcie Flipp very good. Also Mark and Philippa going through the fields providing more informatio as they did today. I did Comments Lines some time ago now for a couple of months and they are/were very time consuming - several hours' work - but at least there was a payday at the end of the day. I am not at all sure this is the case at the moment. Just people trying to assist in providing the information for punters to have an informed bet and not just bet blindly. It is called generating revenue. That is the life blood of the sport/industry we call Racing.1 point -
Barry hasn't inquired into the reasons the Delloite report was hushed up for so long. Not much in the story for those that took an interest. Perhaps the $23M loan to keep up the stakes needs examination. Most get fooled by the fact it was taken out to maintain stake level funding. A better way of looking at it was to keep the inflated salaries and plush lifestyle of top management. Had the $23M been subtracted from stakes there would have been an outcry demanding resignations. So isn't that a classic ponzi scheme? Maintain the perpetrators lifestyles whilst burning the stake holders.1 point

I ran my first of many comps on Queens birthday weekend 2002 with $100 prize money, wife wasn't happy I took a bit of a break from posting a couple of years ago after a bit of an argument with somebody, who was proved to be a dick in the end,but still followed and read the posts. I want to ask a question . If RITA/NZTR and all the tracks are part of the one entity and as such tracks are essentially owned by the wider racing industry , then to whom does the responsibility fall to maintain said facilities and not allow them to fall into disrepair ? . The individual club/clubs that utilize each track or the parent body ? Just a question that has been raised by a non racing friend . My non racing friend thinks that it falls to the parent body .1 point
