  1. Along similar lines....Talking about tracks/Merging etc........Here in the Mighty Manawatu, has anyone thought about selling off both Awapuni and the Trotting/Greyhound course as both surrounded by housing and on the fringe of the city - Then start with a clean sheet at Foxton? Plenty of room to strech out at Foxton - Think Mega training centre with top notch facilities - Gallops/Trots?/Greyhounds. Awapuni function centre could still be kept as offices/Function centre. Foxton only 20 odd minutes away from Palmerston North. Could even lobby to get the train line re-instated from Palmy to Foxton? - Could double up as a rail link for frieght from State highway 1 (Foxton into Palmy) and there used to be a rail line in place back in the day and plenty of room on the wide road shoulders. Is that too much common sense for a Sunday? Should I go back to Sleep? P.S - I'm not a member of either racing club and don't reside in Palmerston North or Foxton.

12-15 years ago and prior when TR generated enough net wagering revenue to pretty much cover their stakes and operating costs. Now they are in the dole cue requiring revenue from pokies, sports, overseas racing and the taxpayer. How much worse can it get and where will it be when the $24m bailout (after paying the necessary $26m bills last week to avoid default) disappears in the next month or so? Hope that helps.

These Gravy trains for executives have to stop......No one should be paid more than the Prime Minister......unless you own the business and earned the money yourself.

Avondale RC members are feeling aggrieved at their loss of 'licence to race" and that is very understandable. But out of change comes opportunity. A chance to be part of something bigger than will be always successful. An amalgamation of the assets of Avondale, Counties and ARC under the structure of private company. Never mind the sop of a free room at Ellerslie - all Avondale JC members become Life Members with rights that transfer down to family in perpetuity wherever Northern Inc races.. The funds coming from asset realization to be used to put AW tracks in at Pukekohe and Ellerslie and the creation of an investment fund that would support all racing activity. Counties has excess land that has been rezoned and a rapidly growing population. With the asset backing available form a subsidary development division and build and retain the freehold investments. If anyone else thinks they would like the Avondale assets AJC should tell them to get stuffed. Its not much use giving them to the wasteful Goff. And to give to a charity is a feel good that will not last. Remember the great McKenzie charity that came from the store chain? I thought not! Its a chance for AJC members to create something for their good for all time.

NZ's best time ever!?!?! Debatable. Depends on what factors one wishes to compare. The TAB was pretty close to going belly up last Friday, and it was only the taxpayer throwing coin at it, that has kept it afloat. For the time being. Season 1978-79 was pretty good. I would say a lot "gooder" than today. Let me list the reasons: 1) The NZ TAB made a profit of $14.13million. That's over $14 million pure profit, in the late 70's! In the 70's!!! How much would that be in today's money? That would buy a few pairs of flares. What were house/land prices back then? The purchasing power of that amount of money... imagine what it could have bought back then, that amount of money. 2) Racing coverage within the print media back then, was a lot more extensive that what it is today. Sh!t, they even printed the fields in the major daily newspapers. Several racing publications were prominent and sat on many more bookcases back then, than today. 3) Racing could be heard on a radio wherever radio reception could be received. Unlike today, where no races are heard on any AM/FM radio transmission. The only requirement back then, to hear a race, was a set of ears, and a radio. No internet required. Thus much more cost effective (for the punter) than today. No doubt others more knowledgeable than me would be able to provide more reasons as to why racing, or more specifically, the state of NZ racing was a lot better back then, than what it finds itself in today. I will finish by referring to Winston's comments last week. He wanted "racing to be made great again." By making it great again, he is saying the current state is not great. We all know that, but maybe Pickles is the exception. "Again" can mean repeated. So perhaps, racing can return to the heights, not to mention the profitability, of the late 1970's. Perhaps it can. Maybe it can't.

  10. I think then the easiest way is anything is split 50/50 after all its a free bet to start with. Then its simple and easy and everyone knows where they stand...there have been some put back in to comps some have not which has been fine...but I just think as we are doing so many that its better to have a simple policy that everyone knows the rules to begin with. I have been wrestling with this for a long time and I feel its just the right way to do things fairly so as many members as possible can have a chance to do well in one way or another from the comps...Scooby.

NZ Racing has been lacking in collaboration for 50 years or more when it comes to agreeing to a plan/strategy to future proof the Industry. Of course there has been a lot of challenges along the way.......Lotto,Casino,Pokies and overseas competition ,Sharemarket crash , GFC ,ACC costs, Health & Safety and other legislation incl employment law,Earthquakes etc etc then the Racing Act and the general change in population spread , immigration and huge change in attitudes.People got more materialistic , needed 3 x cars and 3 x TV's per household and 2x overseas trips a year etc etc.Greyhounds split the pie ! Interest in horses dwindled professional stables and syndication changed the face of NZ Horse racing ......money coming into racing mainly went into stakes which helped some including Breeders. The cost of racing horses escalated. Being closer to Australia has seen us stall in comparison as they buoyed by a huge betting population and Government backing. Ditto Hong Kong. Many of our good get sold or aim to race overseas [eg Sunline, Lyall Creek ,Lazarus] National Administrators tended to be those with the biggest self interest like breeders and regional administrators . For over 40 years most agree we have too many tracks yet no one had the backing or nous to act. Our funding has been scattered and infrastructure has suffered. Buildings decrepit , track surfaces inconsistent and poor . Younger people have too many options ,and the love of the horse and rural outlook lost among youth. Things were left to drift on as it was in the 1940's and 1950's. Lifestyles changed and even among trainers and participants they soon found staying at home in front of TV with beer in fridge and betting on telephone then internet was amazing ....no traffic , more spare time ,much easier ,cheaper and Trackside TV just kept getting better ,including blossoming Aussie racing ! Sports betting ....bait and switch....Racing bets went to sport. Still the Administrators couldn't or wouldn't change things. Regional Bias became stronger , stakes had stagnated so Codes talked NZRB to pay out more money than they earned.....betting blossomed but costs escalated. They lost control of the money and their equity. The TAB went bankrupt ....couldnt pay the bills. Covid 19 came and masked things. Here we are......we got an Aussie in to help ,of course its taken a while to settle on plan......no one wants to lose their track and the odd raceday, no one ! Those likely to , have turned bitter....Avondale with healthy cash flow ,balances and huge equity maintain they cost the Industry nothing. How about the BRAND of Racing ,the place a disgrace and they argue that Messara didn't visit !Blame and denial ! Other clubs maintain the same ,they they sit there with very borderline facilities and healthy cash and equity yet still take funds off the Industry and deny others and apply for huge funding....gimme ,gimme ,gimme ! The axe is wielded and still there is blame ,denial and name calling RITA as idiots. These clubs with the cash and equity IMO should contribute both solutions and equity to the Industry. Their members don't OWN the equity. Rita's cost cutting only half the equation. They will continue to bleed unless betting in NZ resumes and quickly gets to previous levels. Will the Government step up again , they only have paid the current bills so they can continue trading ! If the Code Boards , personnel and the personal interests backing them don't change then Funding and stakes will be slaughtered and the industry will be racing for kumaras in bags ! JMO Yes....a waffle , but the Insolvency implications not getting thru NOR is the fact that stakes rely on betting which already is over 50% Australians betting on our races !

Interesting times. A couple of months ago, or a couple of years ago you could have browsed Race Cafe to read about dissatisfaction with the status quo. Now that there are many changes afoot - you guessed it - you can pop on Race Cafe and read about dissatisfaction with change. If you like something, have the guts to say so. If you dislike something then (briefly) suggest an alternative. Having a whinge about inaction and also having a whinge about change makes little sense. Going by their 2019 Annual Report the TAB pulls in just under $30m revenue a month. This month they've pulled in $50m from Winston together with a wage subsidy and whatever they've made from Aussie racing. So this must easily be the best month's revenue ever for the TAB. Then there is another $20m for two more synthetic tracks and ongoing TAB staff costs are allegedly heading down $10m per annum - when has that ever happened? Arguably NZ Racing's best time ever. (BTW if you think that you disagree with this statement then do so by nominating a better time - because if you are unable to nominate a better time, then you must be in agreement.)

  16. I just wonder if the minimum bet had increased slowly over that period of time then people would have just gone along with it. When the casual race goer goes to the races they want a bet on every race so whilst the minimum is $1 they will spend that $1 to have an interest, I think the same would apply if we even doubled it to $2 now. When I first went to the pub 21 years ago a pint was $3 so would have a couple and on my way, it's about $8 now but it hasn't stopped me having a couple.

  25. Don't know about investing it wisely. They would hand over their assets to be sold and trust the benefactors to give them best deal. Going by their past record it would be like handing your cash flow card to a bloke with 50 burglary convictions. Basically, would you hand over anything to this wobegotten bunch of weasels ? Would be very few here before who have had one complimentary thing to say about the way they have run the circus , now they can be trusted to do handle the acquisition faithfully and with a morality, previously not on display ? Within a few years Avondale would be swallowed under ARC or be run by the dictates of these bushwhackers who couldn't organise a egg and spoon race.

Yet again someone comes up with an idea out of the square , which might be feasible , might not . But wait the powers that be don't want the plebs involved , don't want any consultation with the great unwashed . If they had gone out to the coal face and held workshops where industry participants who wished to , could come along and throw a few ideas around . And who knows out of the hundreds maybe evens thousands of outa whack and dumbass suggestions that got thrown around , maybe , just maybe 5 , 10 or 20 ideas might have shone thru as really forward thinking and pro active enough to be put into practice and be of real value in helping rebuild racing and improve turnover , hence improve returns . And making racing great again , well at least sustainable . But no the wise ones say we know best , you dirt trackers stay out of it , we know we've got shit loads wrong in the past but you watch this time we're on the right track , you know the right track , the same ones we've been on for decades , but this time we have seen the rainbow , it's just up ahead , just around the corner , hang on , you'll see it soon , TRUST US .

  27. Grandad47 (Ray) Based on what I know and what I have read, I don't believe racing has much of a future when our only solution to this crisis is to reduce costs clubs and tracks. To continue on the same path in this environment, an environment saturated with hundreds of attractive alternatives competing for the same dollar, that is suicidal behaviour. The racing industry has always been the domain of those who see no further than their backyard, clinging to their boundary pegs for dear life. When they should have been looking to amalgamate and consolidate, they built higher fences instead. More tracks will close by the end of next season. More should have been closed now. Avondale sits on an absolute goldmine. If sold up the money could be used to build a state of the art training facility elsewhere. A facility attached to an existing non-racing track. It would give trainers the opportunity to relocate into one of the designated centralised areas. There is so much that the proceeds could do for racing in general, but because the club now has the hump, all we hear is slash and burn. Just one of many examples of industry shortsightedness. Woodville I believe sold of their track for a dollar so after years of punters, trainers, and jockeys supporting their club, they threw any possible benefit to those people away. To survive the next 10 years we have to work and think smarter; -provide a product that appeals to more people, -provide a product that is more socially acceptable, -level the playing field with reliable income, -provide more employment opportunities, -partner up with other mainstream providers, -introduce wagering competition, -but most of all, we need to change the mindset of all who participate. If we are not willing to change, racing is doomed. It's like watching the Titanic circle the iceberg.

  31. Emotive - I applaud you for your ideas and they may well be in the future but until we view a feasibility study we can only assume that there isn't one. Gom has highlighted genetic issues in our dogs and these should not be ignored or underestimated as failure is both irresponsible and avoidable. Corey has requested some genetic guidelines. A basic understanding is a must have. It is a myth that the dam has more genetic influence than the sire. The dam's increased importance is due to her role as carer during pregnancy and in rearing. Genetic contributions to the offspring from the sire is equal to the contribution of the dam. Most physical attributes of an animal are substantially influenced by the genes inherited from the two parents which each have two pairs of 39 chromosomes and each chromosome carries thousands of genes. The risks associated with the choosing of a sire are very different to the risks with choosing a dam. Once a sire has 80 or so pups to race the evidence of his genetic merit and more importantly his ability to pass on this genetic merit, has been tested. A critical approach to bitch selection is essential as some outstanding race performers do not breed on. They may have inherited a combination of genes in patterns that do not get passed on to their progeny. Pedigree background is useful and important but there is a risk that too much attention gets paid to distant ancestors that contribute only a small proportion of genes to the animal of interest. We all know that breeding successful greyhounds involves a substantial amount of luck, but a critical approach is necessary when selecting the parents. Type and soundness are highly heritable. Regarding different sire lines carrying genetic faults, it must be remembered that our top sires have thousands of puppies. It is the percentage of puppies with these faults that matters. Regards Ray

Someone wants to promote the industry you should fall over backwards to support them. It's clear the TAB have no understanding of generating sales.

  39. Will you still bet with them after the last weeks events,I wont but will only when the present board on rita are sacked, remember these odd balls in suits(and it's not just this lot)have created the shambles with bad management(website is one thought that pops up)and it's the racecourses ,the media the commentators the stakes and the list goes on and on that get the backwash. If the all blacks performed as bad the players the coaches would probably get replaced so why not this lot. Now that the whole organisation has hit rock bottom(I'm not sure how much further they can go)a total cleanout would be a start so maybe we can get back to a decent radio coverage maybe a rejigged tv setup, some of the codes have to be questioned too as they have scheduled a host of average meetings so some of them need to go,sometimes change is good but the odd balls in suits that are cutting everything need to be cut as well, they created the biggest slice of this decline they need to fall on their own sword too.

  40. Of course they did.......with over 20 windows needed for the busy day...I thought most came from Christchurch . In a bus , then they went to iconic Kumara gallops on the Saturday. At the January Wellington Cup day ,tote staff were flown down from Auckland for it. These are the costs that need to be driven out of the system , so good on the TAB for getting on to this type of things. What's your point here ? For an inane person I seem to have tickled your fancy ....ignore me ,I'm just an enthusiastic participant who knows a little about a lot of things which interest me. You are a passionate Harness racing person involved in owning, training ,driving , administrating and fundraising. The Industry you have devoted your life to has been on a lengthy spiral of decline and it has nearly gone Bankrupt. Instead of accepting the above and getting outsiders and experts to come in and help with a plan to possibly future proof the sport ,you have leapt on Social media to stir things up to basically help your own Club and personal interest. You even have a contact on Board or high up winding you up. You called people idiots and pulled red herrings out to try and support your purpose. Its not working...ignore me !

Somewhere around Foxton would be ideal with the sandy base to drain away meaning great for Winter racing and of course its central to lots of places. This track in Foxton would be better for punters than the all-weather track at Awapuni
