  1. Just more absolute waffle as mentioned above. The Industry was but sadly your Organisation wasn't. The e-mail sent to the Codes recently was embarrassing and full of drivel. Let's get one thing perfectly straight the NZ TAB hasn't been normal organisation place for many many years. That's one thing the TAB has been very good at operating in over recent years 'behind closed doors'. No transparency and when it comes out eg re mistake in accounting errors we still see no transparency. 'Now moved?' It has taken RITA a long long time and wake up and realise just what is happening in the real world, your that far behind it's like your a racehorse still running to finish race 1 and punters just got paid out for the last race of the day. %$%^ me the Board are still running in the first race. Why are they thinking about a plan if racing stops in Aussie? they can't even get a decent plan into action when NZ racing stopped. Obviously there have been no cuts of costs of any magnitude as if there was we would have heard about it. I am starting to wonder if not having to purchase toilet paper because no one is working at Head Office might be the lead area of cost cutting. %$#% me the sole purpose of RITA was to do exactly that when they were given full control in the middle of last year. You were not meant to wait until Corona struck there was already a virus of incompetency at the TAB when you took over to clean out. The Industry can't survive two virus's. Yes the bank $35 - $45 million in debt now and if the conversation with the Government was along the lines of that first e-mail just put the white flag out now. There were only a few sadly who worked that out a few years ago before the virus struck. Once again more drivel you were supposed to be doing this months ago %$%^& me. Cutting costs? I wouldn't want RITA in charge of cutting an apple. Hello the racing industry was facing stress and hardship well before any virus all I have seen since the middle of last year more added and now they have to deal with this going on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- God help the Industry because I would be getting the white flag out now knowing that it has no hope from what I have seen over the past 8 months to counter the mess it was in before that due to total incompetency from management with no idea. I don't know if you can catch the Corona virus twice but the NZ Racing Industry has caught the clueless management virus twice in under a year. I don't hold out much hope for the Government bailing it out as someone with half a clue in there will be saying 'these clowns couldn't get their own house in order before the virus why would we want to tip good money into a badly run organisation". Yes the Industry does need to survive for the benefit of many involved in it but tipping money into the NZ TAB isn't the right thing to be doing basically its had it's time and the Government need to look at other options. The South Australian TAB was given away by the Government 10 years ago that's given away they were running at a loss and the Government knew the taxpayers didn't want to see more money dumped into it. It is now a pointless excercise as to who owns it, its a leaking business that would have been shut down owing millions. I would go cap in hand to the Victorian TAB and put a proposal to them to take over the NZ TAB totally with the only cost the $45 million bank debt. It's a great deal but I don't even know if they would be interested which really shows you just how bad things were and now have progressed even further. The Government will still get a tax from it they don't have to dump millions and millions into a badly run organisation which can't operate as it should be and the clubs will still get revenue to support the Industry. The Industry was in a sick but recoverable state before but unfortunately now with the virus it's in a terminal state. One cost I would be adding to RITA is getting someone outside to vet any further e-mails to the Industry and the codes they are in my view cringe and condescending material.

  3. He is starting to hack me off. Telling people he can enforce a lockdown as long as he deems fit. He has a secure job, no apparent business, telling that to people sitting at home watching all they have worked for going down the gurgler with every advancing week, . 3 months, 6 months whatever time means nothing to him. If he thinks people are going to stay onside no matter the length of time he comes up with he is going to get a shock. Look at Spain even with all the deaths, 3 weeks of lock down, they now taking to the streets in civil disobedience and reclaiming some semblance of life. Ultimately people will only be stretched for so long and power rests with them.

  4. Okey Dokey Smokey All 'Cafers (we are sure) are fascinated about going's on at Cube Central and in general 'bout racing in Cannerbury (that reads Mainland ) NZ Well...here goes.... The Cube Clan moved out from the farm for home renovations in Feb but the rental we moved to was too small for The Cubemeister , Mrs Cubes , Dodecahedron and Prism plus Cocoa the chocolate Lab and the cats Elenoar and Spotty so Mrs Cubes , Dodecahedron , Cocoa and Norsty ( nickname for Elenoar) went down to the bach ( crib ) in Wanaka but then the govement put in place a lockdown ban and travel ban thingy and so The Cubinator got stranded in Christchurch and is in an earthquake damaged 2 bedroom dunga with Prism and Spotty (and the rest of the clan aren't ) however Mrs Cubes is not too perturbed 'cause she spoke to the trainer who said the Zacinto filly is fast but unruly (And all right-minded people must agree that you would rather have that than "slow and ruly" ) and the young colt is full of himself and prances 'round like a Group winner and racing in the Spring of 2020 will be the most awesome ever and Cubes knows many people doing it tough right know but also knows that better times are just around the corner . Hope I don't go broke by Spring and can enjoy NZ Cup Day Cubes and Out

  5. Well I've had my flu jab , it's essential for me millions of others . .I've also had much more serious treatments , just had a scan today , BRILLIANT result , that chemical brew has worked well for the time being . I would love to had a little celebration but I can't buy any spirits around here and I don't want to travel to southland , it's a bit to far for me but some are driving from Queenstown to Gore to buy the drink of their choice , Southland supermarkets don't sell alcohol , they still have the trust system . If you haven't guessed , I sure as hell don't vote labour .

  6. I'm with you Cubes we all need to be positive and look forward to spring racing. I struggle with the negativity of some people. That old adage out of adversity comes prosperity We fully intend to be up and ready to go come 1st July, if that's when we kick off. The Pitman Racing team aren't ready to give up, unlike some I know. The Parsons, Champion and Murphy stables share the same positive attitude we do. All the best to the entire racing community see you back at the track!!

TA was it worth closing the economy. NO. People in the at risk category (age or impairment) should have been in lockdown. Returnees in controlled quarantine and those with CV and there associates in policed quarantine. This thing should be smashed before winter. They have rooted the economy trying to be kind.

  9. One of the bright lights in NZ Racing of late has been the emergence of BGP ! Boy oh boy does Harness sure need some of our youthful enthusiasm ! This week the BGP outfit has quickly got together and arranged a pool of $105,000[ and growing] to have a flutter on the Aussie gallops tomorrow. Some 700 people have got involved...it closes at 5pm tonight. The average age is a little lower than the average Cardigan Bay/Lord Module follower who fills up the Harness halls of despair in NZ. Probably too late to get involved for tomorrow but something Harness needs ASAP. Some movement that folk of all ages and all genders want to be part of ! Harness really needs to get the TAB tills ticking over to be saved. Let's make Harness great again !

  10. Lets tweak it a bit so we work to the front of the nappy........ After referring to an annual report......to gather the facts. GBR on racing is usually about 20% and there is usually sports too about 20%......off that comes Duty 3.8% ,GST 13.35% , and gambling levy 0.5% = NET BR Normally there is Income of about $1 mill per week for NZ Racing shown overseas,Racing Services,Advtg, Interest[????]Broadcasting and publications. Off this total Income come the expenses of about $4 mill per week.....Turnover related expenses ,likely less last week were $68mil in 2017 year , Staff were $64 mill in 2017 ,then there was Equipment exp ,Comm + Technogy $17 mill ,Broadcasting $10mil ,Deprec [Non -cash} $16 mill and other $14mill. In summary if they made a GBR of $3.7 mill for week Id say that would be a loss of between ZERO and $500k. Estimates for the income received [minimal] and the t/o related exp.

  11. And more promising new for NZ sheep and beef producers . " Shenzhen has become the first city in China to ban its residents from eating dog and cat meat after passing a ground breaking new law in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic . The legislation was passed Wednesday by lawmakers in Shenzhen, a city of more than 13 million people, and will take effect on May 1, according to a government notice. The annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival is one of the most controversial food festivals in China and sees thousands of dogs cruelly killed, skinned and cooked with blow-torches before being eaten by the locals , this is now cancelled . READS to me like NZ meat producers just found another 13 million customers .

  12. Somethings not right , the stage 4 shut down was well intentioned and got all the support it needed BUT suddenly we get tens of thousands of overseas arrivals that simply seem to have ignored or at best flouted the regulations to stay at home PLUS the visitors who were on holiday who just kept traveling and what have we got ? A half arsed result despite every average kiwi household making supreme sacrifice . To my thinking it all fell over at the bloody airports

  14. Good on you TA yeah got our shots the other day .The only thing missing was the Lunar Module . Cindy was asked by hard hitting Hillary Barry last night about David Clark ,Cindy fobbed it off as a joke total disrespect of us Kiwis but would you expect from her. Then Hillary giggled and Cindy giggled and waved to each other FFS P4P said something the other day about Cindy leaning towards National and the more I thought about it ,I"m sure he is right. Just go back when she disbanded Parliment I still think this is totally illegal but with all the dumb arsses around her including her she realised that Simon Bridges is the person that might carry her thru so she set up another working party [she loves them]. But S B has being showing her up this week so this will not end well for Cindy . This will be the end of the crap Green Party when Eugenie Sage in these hard times as we all sit at home says this has been great for the climate really this is the shit we have in power ,her and the rest of them with their ideology with electric cars and making the farmers feel like shit .[ who will be the hero's when this is over]. These pretenders like Golriz Ghahrammmmah ,Julie Ann Genter .Cloe Starbuk will be gone and serious people will put our country back on track . At the next election there is a storm coming and it is called Boomers and we are not going to drop our guard like we did at the last election .Cheers BH

  16. Obviously clubs combining. I got into IT back in 1970 so I've followed it's history right through. New technology should have reduced the cost of new development. Instead the TAB splashed out $50M which was crazy. If however we are only talking of betting on NZ racing only then it fits in with the historical pattern of reduced costs. Clubs would find the cost very reasonable with sensible evaluation of options and not be saddled with all the TAB extravaganzas.

  22. Cindy hasn't experienced enough to know what to do or how to do it. She can't continue to flick her hair and look down trodden. She's out of her league and is playing with all of our lives. The go forward strategy is seriously flawed because there is very little forward thinking and common sense moving forward. Everything is from a depressive position. And that twit that went biking...I personally think we should be able to go biking but protocols need to be followed to mitigate twits and fuck ups. But IF you're the health minister, and you've been telling people to self isolate, then by fuck you've got to do it. And if Jacinda finds out about it, she's got to smash him to the curb. It's not good enough to accept an apology. That's the wrong message for a period of time when everyone is under duress. Have you heard the politicians volunteer a pay cut? No. Why not? As a leader I would because guess what, I have taken a full cut, and all the people that work with me are being helped by what I now don't get. They deserve it and its warranted. There are tough times now and more to come because of all these twits not thinking with enough imagination and courage. As for our RITA and NZTR representatives, most have to be laid off and the head management need to cut in half at least. Brian is right in the Optimist....Dean, you've got to step up to the plate...tell us the cuts that you've taken....be transparent, show leadership that you're prepared to bite the bullet like everyone else in the industry. If you don't you will become another body on the heap.

  23. Thanks mate! It was a nice win and at $9.80 too. Tipped my daughter the F4 - which she forgot about and it paid $38k on one Tote! She won well at a great price and her full sister ran the Quin! Luckily I tipped the Quin to our syndicate. Both our mares have done well, winning at their recent starts. We are going to the Doomben next Saturday with one of them. She’s a stronger mare and deserves a shot at better prizemoney plus she will drop in weight.

  27. been waiting for someone to bring that up. All those POS telling us, we are ALL in this TOGETHER, which is not even close to being true, Government ministers still on full pay, $100,000 - 300,000, (90% doing f all) lackeys and consultants all on full pay, most living in 4-5 bedroom homes with 2 bathrooms, spa pool, billiard room and bar, outdoor pool and big back/front yards, all the while imprisoning most of the population to their meagre homes and TOTALLY destroying their finances. FUDGE THEM and their ILLEGAL imprisonments, idiotic factory closures and general lack of humanity to their fellow kiwis. I think everyone should just go back to work on Monday ! Test EVERYONE and if clear, resume work, if not then stay home (depending on severity). I mean 1 dead, 1 in ICU (and hes stable), clearly this is not Ebola or Cholera. Why punish EVERYONE for the f ups of a few (including the PM, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Immigration).

  28. Extract from the Owners Bulletin March 2020 A WEEK LIKE NO OTHER. BOYS GET PAID. KARAKA MILLION NIGHT. Luke Kemeys “One of the things I’m most proud of is the positive coverage we helped generate on racing and the whole industry.” And just like that, it’s all over. Months of build-up and planning to pull off the night of the year and it explodes past us faster than Probabeel. How brilliant was she with $93,672 plonked on her! The scenes on the Ellerslie racecourse were something that I think won’t leave people’s minds for a long time. After a horribly unlucky start to the punters’ club on runner-up Intrigue in race one, it was good to bounce back and finish the night up by 45 per cent – that’s $365,000 for a total outlay of $250,000. It wasn’t an easy night’s punting and some of the odds made it tough to figure out how to attack the races. To be fair I don’t think people cared what the return was – they were just happy to be involved, so to have Probabeel seal a collect was just magic One of the things I’m most proud of is the positive coverage we helped generate on racing and the whole industry. Even if it was just for one weekend, at least we changed the tune of the typical story that we often hear. TV, radio, socials, newspaper, plus a magazine feature to come. Some people said it felt like BGP was everywhere they looked over the weekend and I think you couldn’t help but buy into the infectious nature of everything we were doing. The praise has come from near and a far and to gain the respect of some of those within the industry who we heavily respect, is very rewarding. A huge thank you to everyone that came out to our BGP event and joined the punters’ club. We ended up with 435 on-course and more than 1,300 in the punters’ club. A few years ago, it was just five mates getting into a taxi to go to Ellerslie. This year it felt like we were running an army! We are going to have to put some time into thinking about how we raise the bar in 2021. I’m not entirely sure how just yet, but I guarantee we will. It’s going to be a seriously big week of admin getting the punters’ club investors paid out, but it’s all part of it – finding solutions to problems we never knew existed. The past week hasn’t only been about our big night out at Ellerslie. Something completely new to BGP was being co-owners of Savage, our LA Stud yearling colt by Savabeel to go through the Karaka ring on Tuesday 28 January. This was something none of us had ever experienced, so you can imagine the excitement in the build-up to sale day and our boy’s time in the ring itself – a whole different level to any raceday bet. What a result! To see the two big syndicators Go Racing and Te Akau head-to-head in the bidding and end up with Savage being knocked down to Go Racing’s Albert Bosma for $270,000 – the whole experience was something I find difficult to put into words. I hope you’ve all enjoyed everything that we put together for the Karaka Million – believe me it has been a lot of fun. You have to think that this raceday will keep going from strength to strength. In the coming weeks there will be plenty more for us to dissect, but for now thank you for the support.

  29. Hang in there P4P. The TAB could be a pretty good business , get rid of the fat from their operating expenses and sort the mess caused by the purchase of the troublesome new system and its ongoing cost. With little in the way of physical assets the TAB can still make $150 mill pa being badly run. Short term the $35-45 mil debt and loss of pokies revenue can be bridged by the big hitters in NZ racing.....and galloping does have a lot rich folk with a fair bit of skin in the game and a few who have made it thru racing , not to mention the Auckland Club who have solid investments. That club can offer leadership in many ways...and their Board works FOC .....volunteers ,amazing really ! The TAB is the crown in the jewel.....don't forget it does over half its racing turnover in overseas racing . Sport betting will come back...there will be life after the Virus! Change is certain......since the 1970's petty personal interest has hamstrung them with their calendar and programs and trying to appease the clubs and regions. Let them now show some authority ....the uneconomic clubs and those costly for the TAB to service need to go.Stakes need to come down initially. Please maintain the current minimum stake and make racing free...no nomination fee ! Cut your cloth to suit.....clean out the fat. Lets get this show back on the road. The TAB can make $150 mill a year .....poorly run !

  30. Great.....a positive attitude which hopefully produces a positive expectancy leading to positive action. NZTR said they are contacting trainers to make sure they ready to get underway ASAP ,once restrictions lifted. And the Industry needs to be ready to go , so if these stables can inspire others then Canterbury should be first to the starting line. The danger is that if all horses are sent to the hills as the huge Waikato stables were basically forced to do there is a chance at start date ,few will be ready. The other problem could be that if a huge amount of horses all spell together ,then come back to stable together to all commence at the same time ...say 1 October ,there won't be the meetings to accommodate all horses ,which would really test connections resilience . Also high on the pro-active list for all stables should be fully educating all staff etc on health protocol. Its kinda obvious that at some stage the Guvmint will realise that the Virus problem needs to be managed through lifting restrictions and allowing people to get on with their lives. Social distancing etc will still be the 'rule' ,so it pivotal that Aussie racing continues . Pivotal also to the TAB ,who needs betting to try and replenish their coffers ,once they get rid of a lot of the excess overhead ! Good luck in helping get Canterbury racing back into action !

There are 2 other trainers at the property which we don't have to have any contact with and we have all our own gear. From what I understand it was a decision made by MPI??? Why would they be making those sorts of decisions for OUR code??? The industry needs to have horses ready to race as soon as we get the "all clear",because the longer this fiasco goes on the more damage is being done to an industry already tethering on the brink of destruction!

  40. Other than a tokenistic mention of executive and board salary reductions, there is no suggestion of say 30% staff cuts like Air New Zealand for example. Should have happened 6 months ago and still nothing decisive. What is happening? What's the GBR for the current 6 months cf. last year to date? What's the reduction in operating costs etc.? This is just a bunch of waffle.
    1 point
  41. If GBR (Gross Betting revenue) last week was $3.7M then multiplied by 52 that is about $180M enough to payout for stakes. What is destroying it is the overheads and excess salaries. RITA is not responsible for what NZTR is doing so why the self adulation by RITA. There are no specifics in the "pay cuts". As I posted March 10 before the topic was fashionable all salaries have to scaled backwards from a maximum of $150,000 PA.

  43. RITA, or whatever they are called this week, have invested heavily in an intangible asset called information technology. That is accounting jargon for; "They are broke". As another poster here noted; they have invested heavily in boosting the number of TAB betting accounts. Whoopty do!! The huge investment in boosting the number of new TAB accounts comes with inadequate accounting systems to monitor the efficacy of those new accounts. When I was about 8 years old our stud groom chopped off a chook's head. I was astonished to see that headless chook run about. It seemed cruel to me, at that age. The RITA management brought that childhood memory to mind.

Carry on as per usual except for those over retirement age and /or immunicompromised was the right move. The antibodies from Sars are still detectable in those recovered 17 years ago according to Science , if we do this everytime a new bug comes along were f%#ked anyway. Relying on Big Pharma IS NOT the way forward involving viruses, they have killed and harmed untold people with their experiments and its only a matter of time before their ‘bungling ‘ creates another Disaster. Most if not all drugs today have a plant based origin, and two of the big four surrounding Heart function were discovered by ordinary people hundreds of years ago. Time to remodel the industry based on those that can survive of their own accord and take it from there. I fear (in fact it's almost guaranteed the way nzracing is run) this will be yet another excuse to kick the small guys fair in the gonads but this time with haste and certainty given the dire situation the industry is in. When in reality it should be an opportunity to see which clubs ,stables, etc have the ability to rebuild without industry subsidy, let the freeloaders fall to the way side they'll find something else to do.

  49. This post is about South Island jumps racing but my thoughts are towards North Island racing. To get a horse ready to run 6400 metres of the Great Northern needs five months of slow build up. So to get a horse ready for early September the work needs to start by early April at the latest. But it would be disappointing for a horseman who had put in all the hard work to be told that the Great Northern has been cancelled. Few people can comprehend the huge amount of time and money involved in getting a thoroughbred ready to compete over 6400 metres. I recall, some years ago, a trainer who always had a number of jumpers, remarking at the fourth day of the Ellerslie Christmas carnival; "Tomorrow we start on our steeplechasers." That was at the height of summer!

Rubbish, that comment is 10 yrs old and belongs in the past. The problem was and largely still is the TAB and the industry itself failed to see the punter as relevant and in the current climate it’s more evident than ever. They have cut comments people, camera numbers etc, the very bloody things that keep punters coming to the well. Out the back of this, if the industry survives, the reforms that were badly needed are going to happen as a matter of course. The industry will be 1/3 the size it is currently with huge numbers of Owners, Breeders, Trainers and support industries gone.
