now we are getting circulars in the letterbox inviting us to get out and walk - got one yesterday that said "enjoy sex at 65" - well I live at 78 so that is not too far to walk!

  2. If GBR (Gross Betting revenue) last week was $3.7M then multiplied by 52 that is about $180M enough to payout for stakes. What is destroying it is the overheads and excess salaries. RITA is not responsible for what NZTR is doing so why the self adulation by RITA. There are no specifics in the "pay cuts". As I posted March 10 before the topic was fashionable all salaries have to scaled backwards from a maximum of $150,000 PA.

    NZTR update

Mick Guerin is a Harness man. Would he have much idea about what was happening in Thoroughbreds. From my indications there are plenty of horses ticking over for the horses own welfare. Just because a couple of big stables throw all their horses out the media thinks everyone else will follow suit. These horses that are ticking over would be ready to race again a month after the Lock down ends especially if races are at shorter distances. Most of these horses that have been put out will be summer horses and would not have been competing in June and July anyway.

  4. Time for an update and for racing it's not looking pretty . There is talk of extending restrictions which means it could be 5/6 months if we are lucky before racing can return in NZ . Take a look at the stats in Ausse , population 27million . Yesterday the infection rate fell to 6% , their EARLY trend is down and they are starting to feel pretty smug . They did have the early disaster when a cruse ship unloaded about 3000 partly infected tourists into Sydney so they started from behind . Ausses have a wide variety of restrictions but pie carts on the side of the road are open again , and RACING CONTINUES . In NZ in the last 7 days around 650 NZers will have died of life in general , STILL ONLY 1 YES ONE from this virus . We are now obsessed with eradicating this virus instead of controlling it , HOW DID M BOVIS work out in cattle , that was going to be eradicated , a $100 mill later and still going . Cindy still won't control the boarders , new arrivals not tested or locked down , they can go anywhere so how can we possibly eradicate if we don't even control the boarders . Given NZs population is not as condensed as the big city's around the world there is plenty of opportunity to lift restrictions in a controlled way and events like racing , butcher shops , green groceries , etc to open in a controlled manor . Keep the 2 mtr distance and look after those who may be vulnerable , then open up and save many from financial ruin . So far the death of ONE woman will bankrupt this country and reduce us to Venezuela if we don't change direction and loosed the draconian , financially crippling restrictions .

  5. What goods will be sold? Nothing from china , no imports fullstop ,killing more people will not fix that.racing in nz is coming back in july hopefully and realistically imports might start back at the same time.Just a little patience is all we need, then more of us can get back to work , more of us can get back to punting rather than killing thousands in the name of expediency.Because the WORLD is in the same boat we have NO OTHER CHOICE but to ride it out as best we can and ffs stop moaning about it.

  7. Other than a tokenistic mention of executive and board salary reductions, there is no suggestion of say 30% staff cuts like Air New Zealand for example. Should have happened 6 months ago and still nothing decisive. What is happening? What's the GBR for the current 6 months cf. last year to date? What's the reduction in operating costs etc.? This is just a bunch of waffle.

  8. "The game was embarrassed about itself because they felt there were too many blokes with broken noses and cauliflower ears in positions of control.“ great quote that! Seems the same problem as in racing, run by disconnected business types when it needs actual participants in management roles.

Stanaway still battling away , two in first today Geelong , 125 runs between them no wins , won't change today as Yulong Wall should hose home .He has lots of entries next few days so winner must be soon,he has an ex Te Akau called Faltonius in , he must be OK as he has been shipped over after two average runs here late last year .

  11. The title was won fair and square by Robert Dunn. Sure ,the season was cut short but the Dunn stable had plenty of promising horses and had a handy and deserved lead. But I wouldn't count out M.House cos he will give it a shot ...he will have a positive plan and place his horses where they get a chance. All 3 of these stables seem to have a plan , pursue it positively and contribute a lot to the Harness scene.

  12. Yep they are challenging the immune systems of the most vulnerable to corona for something that has a 10-50% effectiveness against SOME strains of flu. Mad. Probably mad in the first place unless you have a fetish for injecting yourself with foreign protein.

  14. Growing NRL greed exposed by virus, says former Kiwis coach Graham Lowe Rugby league great Graham Lowe says the coronavirus pandemic has unmasked a greed that has infiltrated the NRL and believes a fundamental re-set should take place. While adamant that sport "is insignificant behind humanity" in the problems caused by Covid-19, Lowe didn't hold back when asked to assess if a reincarnated NRL could be better structured. The successful former Manly, Queensland and Kiwis coach said too many stakeholders had clawed themselves an influential voice in the running of the game. Clubs and the NRL itself were now top-heavy with staff, Lowe said, and the imbalance was exposed by the pandemic, which has halted the competition and left it teetering financially. "We can all see it now, there's been a greed that's infected the game, a greed from players, from coaches, from player agents and clubs," Lowe told AAP. "I think it's been disgusting and whatever happens in the future, someone's got to be strong enough to make sure that greed never infects the game again. "For example, coaches have got to be totally de-powered. They're not the oracles they think they are on the game." Lowe, who was chief executive at Manly a decade ago, said he had to go back to more than 20 years ago when Ken Arthurson ran a tight rugby league ship in Australia for the ideal setup. Arthurson's hard-nosed attitude wouldn't have let struggling clubs be continually bailed out by grants and other support mechanisms, Lowe added, and that a central cash reserve would probably have been established. He said only clubs that can survive through their own crowd figures and sponsorship should remain in a new-look competition, hailing Brisbane Broncos as the only club currently that could be classified as strong. Lowe said the salary cap should be dispensed with and an English Premier League-style structure introduced, even if that results in a smaller number of teams. "I know that broadcasting has a major part to play but weak clubs shouldn't be allowed to be involved," he said. "You've got to have a situation where the clubs can actually stand on their own two feet, without the support of the governing body. "Most clubs would agree, they could run on a fraction of their staff for a start. You've got assistant coaches for the assistants." Lowe feared he would sound like a curmudgeon but he believed the influx of business people running rugby league had removed some of its essence for fans. "The game was embarrassed about itself because they felt there were too many blokes with broken noses and cauliflower ears in positions of control. "We've totally failed to recognise the wisdom of those blokes." AAP

    Coronavirus Hysteria

I read where China is sending Medical supplies to all parts of the world. I wonder. Given that this pandemic was started in China, it has been suggested to me by one theorist that these supplies could be “deliberately infected”, as China wages biological warfare on the world. Could this be true? Interesting theory.

    Covid-19 restrictions

Why are you allowed to jog a horse but not allowed to fast work one? And does anyone have the stats on injuries sustained while jogging vs at pace? So a carpenter can build a house or do renovations on his own property during the lockdown but a trainer can not work his horses! That would be some of the most fucked up shit I have seen in this fucked up world of bureaucratic bullshit.

They can make as much as they like but until the ports and shipping get back to normal no- one has any advantage.I work as a builder and I know there is a limited supply of nails, screws, nuts and bolts that I need to keep working and prior to the lockdown my colleagues were not just panic buying toilet paper!!!. We might get back to normal but we will be on a knife edge for sure .

TA was it worth closing the economy. NO. People in the at risk category (age or impairment) should have been in lockdown. Returnees in controlled quarantine and those with CV and there associates in policed quarantine. This thing should be smashed before winter. They have rooted the economy trying to be kind.

There’s plenty not following the lockdown restrictions and what do they get a friendly warning from the cops and none of them run businesses it’s a flipping joke .Either lock the F ers up or drop back to level 3 so we can get back to work.

I understand with what you are saying but I guess what I’m saying is... if the mix of caliber of mare and stallion you bred to is worth more than what it costs you - then you have paid unders. So if you breed a good mare and have a nice product then it would cost you more if you went to buy it at a sale... so worth doing. We are not talking about non-stakes performed mares or I agree with your logic.

  29. Thank God for Australian racing...there is bugger all else for punters to bet on. And reading between the lines, the outlook for some of our racing venues is looking bleak. More ways to skin a cat eh.....? But we expect the reality is we'll be racing at fewer venues to achieve the desired outcomes. This will require difficult and at times, unpopular decisions, but the alternative is stark.

I will bag it though if you like. I think it could have been way more specific and transparent. For example, wishy washy terms like the "new normal" aren't helpful. What RITA's current vision of that is would be helpful. Also for example, the half-year report is due out now. Perhaps some specifics about when that will be released and a heads up on what it might tell us. I could go on.

Your sniping/posts is becoming at best boring at worst tedious.Entirely your right to post on here and elsewhere as you do but can you come up with something original. You say you want to hear from RITA so here it is and you still bag it. Could you do any better? PS i posted already that RITA staff had taken pay cuts some time back. Nice to know the tea lady was on the money with her bully to me Greg

    NZTR update

According to Mick Guerin on radio in Melbourne today the reason is this: All the training tracks are closed so it will take at least 5-6 weeks for racing to start because all the horses are trained on tracks and none on private training facilities like Lindsay Park where they can keep them in work. Learn something new everyday. I always thought heaps of NZ horses were trained on private properties, way more than in Australia. Am i wrong or was my English teacher right when he told me Journalism is an ancient greek word that means "if you don't know just make it up as you go"

That's to Paddy Power is that right ? Paddy Power and Betfair got some big mega merger going on been given go ahead by UK authorities , not sure NZ Tab will feature much in considerations however on plus side it's not in their interest at all to let it go to the wall , or i cannot see why they would let it so who knows they might help a bit .Maybe they could let it go belly up and step in .

I don't get this "breed what you can't afford to buy" in most cases you'd probably be better off not paying the stud fee and waiting to pick up a similar horse for 20% of stud fee with 18 months worth of costs already paid. I'm looking at a 5k stud fee this year, no way I'll pay that in this environment but what I can breed I can probably buy for $1k on GH in 18 months not much different if I go to a $10k stallion either.

Hong Kong champion Beauty Generation, one of the highest rated milers in the world, went through last season unbeaten and has now won 7 Group 1's and broken the record for prize money won in Hong Kong. Road To Rock is also the sire of All Roads (Gr 2) and Rock On (Gr 3) and black type performer Art Deco. Greg
