    #Good On Ye Mate!!

To all of you here in Racecafe and far and wide, to add some positivity in our circles would we please give a big Thanks to all those over 70's who have been carYring on exercising a common sense approach to life and getting out enjoying the sun to get Vitamin D and taking preventative measures to keep one's health in line for winter. #Good On Ye Mate!! We have seen you out and about on our walks and heard from you that some of you that you are missing your swimming, some of you have said you are still swimming to keep your lungs & body healthy. #Good On Ye Mate!!" To those who may not know, the current Health Minister David Clark partakes in Running and cycling which is amongst the recommended exercise we inmates are allowed to undertake. Ask him why we others, and I'm under 70 btw guys, that all other forms of sport and exercise are excluded in his suggestions. It says a hell of a lot about how active, or should that be inactive some of our politicians and health workers are. Over 70's are far more active in the community than they may have been in days gone by and they have as much right as anyone to live independently and partake in what under 70's do. #Good On Ye Mate!! Stop the age discrimination that is been used based on Public Health research blanket approach

    TAB to go tits up

Time to remodel the industry based on those that can survive of their own accord and take it from there. I fear (in fact it's almost guaranteed the way nzracing is run) this will be yet another excuse to kick the small guys fair in the gonads but this time with haste and certainty given the dire situation the industry is in. When in reality it should be an opportunity to see which clubs ,stables, etc have the ability to rebuild without industry subsidy, let the freeloaders fall to the way side they'll find something else to do.

  4. Throughout the world and here we are constantly hearing about companies large and small that are either laying off employees or working reduced hours and being paid less. Sporting organisations that are cutting costs so the sport will survive and be there for the fans etc when this is over. Why have we heard nothing from our Racing codes on their measures to cut costs. Staff wages are any business biggest costs. Go through the NZTR staff list and ask yourself what are these people doing when there is no racing? The communication team, have heard nothing from them as they have nothing to communicate. This must be the same in the Greyhounds and Harness. Surely 1 person could cover the 3 codes communication and still have time to look at Pornhub. The RIU no racing no need for this organisation to have a full complement of staff. There must be a lot of people who have lost their incomes with no racing but do the 3 codes heirachy care? Obviously not. Remember Bernard etc without those at the bottom working their arse off for minimum wages there is no gravy train for you in the future. There are still plenty of fruit picking jobs for the underworked employees of NZ Racing.

    TAB to go tits up

My missus saw an ad on Facebook saying if she opened an account with the TAB and put $20 in they would give her $80 in free bets. In 40 years of marriage she had never shown any interest in having a tab account, and regularly accused me of wasting lots of time and money on mine! So she gets her account and asked my opinion on what to do and bet on, totally disregarded my advice and made 4 $20 place bets on names of horses and dogs! Three came in and her account jumped to about $150 odd. She didn't use it for a while but the good old tab recognised this and offered another $10 free bet that she put $5 each way on a winner. And yes, she reminds me of this

  10. Yes I meant Codes not Sector groups. I dont want to repeat what I have been told and name the people. It is their business not mine - or ours. What I wanted to do was to do had a reason and it is not about me. I respect Leigh for the effort, integrity and money he has put into Cafe. Because of my position in a sector group (unpaid like Leigh) I know things sometimes before others. In part I wanted to stop tyre kickers and titillators running around and pissing like Hairy McClary's dogs on the site. But in the main I wanted to talk past them to people who have 'skin in the game' (Pretty sure you do) to apprise them of the dire situation. I have shares in some young horses. Three are hundreds of kilometres away. I am told they are now in a paddock. As an owner I am paying our bills but in a partnership there is no way of knowing if others will do the same. Will there be enough money to sustain the carer of the horses in the property. and enough income to feed and care for the animals. The good times have stopped, there is no trickle down. Lets hope Owners, the bill payers can hang in for the welfare of horse and the carer. As regards your question - I'm sure you can join the dots.

  11. Ouch, for a Yank, that hurts. At least, some jurisdictions are still running. I've been to the track in Nebraska that you are referring to, Fonner Park. It's a fun little 5/8ths mile track with its own little idiosyncrasies, much like Aussie country/bush racing. As for no form, you are misinformed. All you need to do is go to https://www.drf.com/ and purchase the form. Attached is the form from last Wednesday. As for the pools being small, again, you are incorrect. Here is a comparison of Fonner Park last year versus this year: Mar 24, 2019 - $279,577; Mar 25, 2020 - $1,643,825. This was all-source handle, each day ran 8 races. So minus the Pick 5 pool, each race had around $180,000 in WPS, Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta, Pick 3, Pick 4 pools. Hardly small pools. People are definately betting Fonner Park. Have a look at the pools for Gulfstream Park for yesterday (attached). I didn't feel like doing the math, but for the 14 races, I'm sure it is well over $20 million. You used Remington Park, which is currently running a quarter horse meeting. There is very little interest in quarter horse racing in general, so using them as an example was a poor one. So the problem is that you bet US racing into TAB pools in NZ. I run into the same problem when I bet NZ racing here, very little in the pools. One of these days, NZ and US racecourses will work out how to effectively co-mingle the pools like we do with Hong Kong. Until then neither product will be worth betting in to. FWIW - I still greatly enjoy tuning into and watching Kiwi racing. To all down under, stay safe and healthy. Cheers. FONNER, 03-25-20.pdf GP, 03-28-20.pdf

    What next

If they couldn't manage NZ racing before Covid what chance are they during and after Covid . I thought we couldn't get worse governance than the last bloke but this guy Saundry is feckin clueless . Has shown no real leadership and has not promoted 1 idea to benefit NZ racing , sitting waiting for the Messara report to be the saviour . There should be daily updates on the NZTR site to update the participants and let them know what things they are looking to do to mitigate the present situation and give some information on how they are looking to manage racing going forward once racing resumes but NADA , 4 days since the last update . When we need really strong leadership we've got feckin BAMBI . Best decision i ever made deciding to retire from racing horses in NZ this time last year , and i'm still struggling not having a horse in my paddocks , but watching this clueless lot keep directing the ship at the rocks just reinforces it . My hat comes off and my heart goes out to those people still invested in racing .

It comes as no surprise, and as i have stated previously, but under the current management structure in the North it was always going to happen. Maybe the Waikato Board needs to act quickly in order to eradicate itself of any resaemblance of what is the present Auckland club in order to have controlover their destiny instead of it just being a takeover and more of the same.

    TAB to go tits up

This was probably a while back when Racing Board [TAB] were really into 'smoke and mirrors'. Among the major KPI's for management was to create NEW accounts and increase the number of monthly active accounts. The free bets often increased toward the end of month ! All that was 'sizzle'...good news and allowed them to show graphs with upward trends. But sadly the sausage.....revenues and cash flow, was heading South along with equity. The RITA [NZRB] accounts are on line. A lot of the issues e.g. too many racetracks ,many not up to scratch have been around since the 1980's and before but read 2016 report where it says the current business model was not sustainable etc and needed urgent change. Well no one has acted ...its gone from bad to worse. Time for a clean sheet ,start again and remodel the Industry on what should be a smaller scale.

Nanango was a non-TAB meeting, where stakes are much lower. They normally would race for $7500 per race. Nanango won’t see racing for a while. There are only 16 tracks in Qld being utilized for Racing whilst it (racing) continues during the Corvid-19 period. The rest are shut down. All are TAB meetings but you need an account to bet with either the TAB or a Ladbrokes etc.

  19. Couldn't agree with you more Stables and Ohokaman about the conspiracy and fake news stuff being peddled here especially by those with vested interests masquerading as moral principles. Take the Novartis CEO comments above and the drugs being peddled as possible cures for Covid-19 and playing on people's fears to push stock prices in the pharmaceutical companies up. There are vested interests afoot all over social media - don't give them any air. They are the peddlers of fake news and false hope. The Director of Health in the USA (brave man) stood alongside his boss Donald Trump the other day and castigated him for basically giving air to unsubstantiated rumours about various drugs being so-called "game changers". He basically said Trump was spreading false information about supposed magic bullet cures and that it wasn't helpful. He added that there was "no scientific evidence" to suggest any of these drugs being touted were cure-alls for Covid-19 and not to listen to those touting them as such. Probably won't have a job next week that bloke but good on him for standing up to the liars. Here's how trustworthy these companies like Novartis are: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-02/novartis-sandoz-settles-u-s-generic-drug-price-fixing-charges-k7azdwck It would be nice to have some racing to talk about... 32. Hi Aaron. I did qualify my remark by saying that virtually any sport could be fixed if people were motivated to do so but it strikes me that two gamers playing each other could quite easily get their heads together and bet on only one of them to win (if they had a mind to). The fact that professional sportsman are paid big money doesn't alter the human greed factor. These gamers are precision players and very skillful in their own right - much like darts players or snooker players - and so the average Joe Bloggs like you or me wouldn't know about a near miss that can so easily skew the result. So it just strikes me that individual sports would be more likely to attract unscrupulous fixers than team sports, unless of course you're the goalie in hockey or football I suppose. If they could fix the 1919 World Series of baseball then anything is possible. We've seen examples of fixing results in cricket, tennis, racing and a number of other codes, so if its going on in team sports we can be pretty sure its going on in individual matches too. Gaming does not strike me as being any different. History shows us that wherever there is betting there are individuals looking to create an 'edge' and some resort to fixing to get it - others to doping. NZ racing has not been immune as you will know. Ring-ins, a handful of NZ hurdle jockeys fixing races in the 50s (most got put out for life from memory), the head-to-head betting scandal when David Walker got seven years. That was just waiting to happen. If people want to bet on Esports then fine but not for mine. You pays your money and you take your chances. I've been involved in racing for 55 years and I love the sport as I know you do but its sad to see it in such decline these days and that's not all down to Covid-19 of course - mismanagement at the top level has to wear a lot of that.

  34. I mentioned Hydroxy-chloroquine in an earlier post. You could buy it in the Remuera pharmacy but you needed a specialists prescription to get it. Went back three days later and it was all gone. It needs to be administered with azithromycin together to have a desired effect. Hydroxy-chloroquine can have seriously average side effects.

  39. Hey no offence to you Scanman or Fonner Park, Remington Park or any of the other courses where the NZ TAB offer betting. I'm sure some of these meetings are first class as you say. But why would I want to buy form for a meeting when the TAB can't even be bothered doing that from the very website you refer to? They only have themselves to blame for getting small pools. It's contempt for their customers and just plain lazy and this hasn't been happening just since Covid-19, it's been the fare handed out for quite some time. Good Luck to people who want to bet on esports as long as they are aware it is ripe for game fixing - but I guess that's true for just about any sport if people have a mind to do so. Scanman I fear you may have misunderstood - I wasn't talking about the on-course turnover at Fonner Park or at the other US tracks themselves, I was talking about the NZ TAB's betting pools for most of these American races being so miniscule as to declare 70 cents dividends for $1 for two quinellas (Remington Park). The turnover would be miniscule here. Co-mingling would be the answer as you say but at present we seem to have common ground on there not being any value in betting on those races in NZ - which was exactly my point. Keep safe. Kind regards, HS.

  40. I don't get why people are so up in arms about Nztab taking betting on E Sports. It doesn't interest me in the slightest so I don't bother even looking at it but I know of people who love esport so now being able to bet on it makes more new money coming in through the door and who knows they might like the punting thing and end up looking at other options including horse racing. I had an old school mate who opened an account to bet on surfing and it wasn't long before he was messaging me asking me for horse tips. As for American racing it is ashame there is no world pool as I'm sure there would then be more interest. It is funny how people look at different countries racing and say how bad it looks etc, I know I have said the same at some of the Japanese stuff we get fed but then think to myself it would be a similar look to those countries when they watch NZ in the middle of winter spread out over 300 meters at the finish.

  41. Chalk and cheese indeed. I hear what you’re saying .. even the experts differ in opinion. Sadly your 1 call this and 1 call that is not reality. My daughter has spent hours on the phone trying to get things to happen. It’s not as easy as you make it sound. it seems that rules are different for Kiwis living in Australia, half of the 600,000 + are not eligible for a benefit if they arrived after 2001. I see other posters suggesting that mitigation is not the answer, it is absolutely the answer. It’s buying time to stop the progress of the virus and give science a chance to get a vaccine in play. I’m not going to pretend that i completely understand the dynamics of this thing and anyone who does is guessing in the guise of knowledge. You have to play the cards you’re dealt. Sadly a lot of us won’t be convinced of the seriousness until we are personally affected.

  42. Looking back....as recent as the 'talk' John Allen gave at Ellerslie May 2019 I believe then he must have known they were close to 'broke' or 'trading while insolvent'. He gave a few hopeful COULDS ,SHOULDs and MAYBES about more revenue from Racefields ,International fees and Abolition of Gambling Duty etc. But revenue was down plus they had lost a few elite punters and costs only down a slice of cheese. All his hopes seemed on RITA and Messara report.....looking back he was very hopeful about new REFORMS. But the numbers were bad. Revenue down and dropping ,equity gone from $70mil to $23 mil in past 2 years and distributions paid to Codes were more than the profit. In addition in past year the credit line from bank had been drawn down an extra $25mil taking it to $35 mil. So he must have known that even if he hit every jackpot , realistically possible , that Bank loan had to be paid back by 2021. He must have known he was 'Trading while Insolvent' or very close to it. Funny that several of these guys are now associated or have been associated with both NZ Racing Board AND ATC financial disaster......and they continue to be ! I don't feel sorry for them....as Sandry said "NZ racing people very resilient ".....he meant to say mugs !

  44. Danger everywhere , as this whole situation unfolds there are those who will use this to crisis to advance their ideas of how things should be done . Bernard , "" Rather than dwell on the downside of this, I believe our industry should be focusing on the opportunity the lockdown has given us to reset our industry. We can use this as an opportunity to do things differently, change things up and create a model which will sustain us into the future. We already have a team working on various permutations of what a resumption of racing might look like. There are some interesting ideas being thrown around and everything will be considered."" So there will be change , that's if racing survives , many owners will enjoy not getting a bill at the end of the month , they might not return . I have a share in a winter galloper , I doubt we will be racing in the next 8/10 weeks so it won't be returning . If you think it will be sooner then why has the Govt paid people for a 12 week stoppage , $7020 bulk for self employed or $580 a week wage subsidy . Robertson is up to no good as well , name change , New Venezuela but that's for later .

  45. Personally I agree with the current course of action.........BUT I am realistic and old enough to understand life in NZ as we have known it will be very different from recent times. I have worked overseas when younger for about 7 years and had a taste of overseas travel in recent years. Even though Kiwis are very one-eyed about the quality of lifestyle we enjoy ,we have been very fortunate and our disadvantage of our remoteness to rest of world is also a huge bonus. We have an abundance of life essentials......Food , water , sun and ?????..many ! Our government and lifestyle is generally free of corruption and we have democracy and personal freedom ,freedom of speech etc. We have very good educational institutions and produce many very smart people in Health and technology.World class ! Technology means we are in touch with the world and time wise we see the sun first each day. I believe we have all our needs met and plenty of opportunities. Sure we have a lot of 'have nots' and in recent years this gap has widened. Sadly this Virus and the aftermath will kill a lot of businesses and many will lose jobs.........our booming tourism business will suffer for years. Like NZ racing ,the Guvmint has overspent for decades and put resources into wrong areas .............our size will make recovery a slow and difficult one but the quality of life ..the food ,water etc is still abundant along a good attitude !!!! Many find change difficult....attitudes are vital Its not what happens ,its how you take it. Dont cry.....create. Create success in the future ,don't moan about the past and stuff you don't control . Amen!

What an absolutely out-of-touch, selfish, uninformed, arrogant, self-centred and narrow-minded stand to take. Even the narcissistic IOC eventually saw the light, but you? Not so much.... The backlash against the likes of The Warehouse, the IOC and the NRL, who all felt self-entitled enough to say they were carrying on, shows racing can not afford to be seen to be trying to appear to be more important than life itself. The general public will not appreciate and support such moves, not when most of them are going to suffer themselves.
