Avian influenza A (H5N1) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus are infections that cause a severe viral pneumonia leading to acute respiratory dysfunction syndrome and carry a high case-fatality rate. We have investigated innate immune responses to both viruses using primary human macrophages and respiratory epithelial cells as in vitro models. In contrast to human influenza A H1NI viruses, the H5N1 viruses hyper-induce cytokines (tumour necrosis factor [TNF]alpha, interferon beta) and chemokines (IP10, MIP1alpha, MCP) in in vitro cultures of primary human macrophages. A similar differential effect is observed in primary human bronchial epithelial cells and in type 2 pneumocytes although TNFalpha is not induced in respiratory epithelial cells. The cell signalling pathways responsible for this differential effect remain to be explored. Preliminary data suggest that such differential signalling involves p38 MAP kinase rather than NF-kappaB. SARS coronavirus infection of primary human macrophages is associated with a strong induction of chemokines without an associated type 1 interferon response. These observations may be relevant in disease pathogenesis.3 points

These are revolutionary times. Possibility of mass unemployment. Any job is a good job. it is obscene that there are non required personnel each "stealing" hundreds of thousands in salaries. Racing does not need self professed marketing gurus promoting fixed odds over tote betting. an exercise that is dubious at best. At least $5 million can be saved by bringing back salaries to the level I outlined and immediately. Most likely if these absurd salaries persist across all industries there will be blood on the streets. Mark my words.2 points

I said you are watching a deep state event (think climate change WMD etc) inflicted on the people to crash the economy to fore-fill their agenda. Watch 6xes video. Again Problem -Reaction - Solution My point is Team Trump already new what was going to happen and will foil their plan with a military operation and also use it to restructure the financial system....plus expose as is already happening China, socialism, the crazy Green New Deal, Open borders Fake media etc etc I don't know the intricacies of the virus but just like climate change the obvious questions are never asked by the MSM hence the hysteria My feeling is the public are about to be awakened about the deep state atrocities and some high profile arrests coming. Enjoy the show1 point

TAB to go tits up
Insider reacted to tasman man 11 for a topic
Quite a unique excuse......$3.8 mil coding / reconciliation error. This excuse is extraordinary ! We all knew Industry heading south at knots. We all knew massive changes needed to be made. We have seen how airlines etc have acted as things turn to custard. Racing should see this as a new beginning and start with a clean sheet of paper ASAP. The inevitable job losses may even see a Government handout ? Also several sports have been decimated thru loss of TAB revenue which in scheme of things was 'petty cash' to the part Sports Betting was contributing !1 point -
No argument about farming still being our “backbone”, but generally speaking farmers have no interest in horses these days. The generation after WWll - through to the 1970s were only a generation removed from where horses were being used to work farms, hence they had a love for, and affinity with, horses. They also had small one man band farms allowing them the flexibility to pursue their horse passion.1 point

Not a good read, wonder if they did "cut the sausage rolls". Amazing that they deliver a 3.8 mil loss on bonus bets - the weak balance sheet haunts, the 50 mil is the noose All sad but a simple commentary on poor historical management1 point

Do you honestly believe the govt is shutting it's borders because 6 people have tested positive to a flu that has been with us for years? 5-14% of all flu viruses are corona viruses Did the world should shut down when HIV reared it's head? Do they close all roads when a crash injures 6 people knowing that more crashes are going to occur if they don't? Get a grip1 point

Minimum weight raised in NSW and Victoria
bus stop reacted to High Sparrow for a topic
Good idea if ever I saw one. Should have happened without coronavirus both across the Tassie and here long before now in my humble opinion given that the average weight of a New Zealander has increased by 5% in the last 23 years. The average Kiwi male is about 85 kgs and the average weight for a woman is a little over 72 kilograms according to stats. But the NZ racing authorities have done nothing and in the interim we've lost some very good jockeys. Here's the story from Oz. https://www.racenet.com.au/news/minimum-weight-for-nsw-jockeys-raised-to-combat-covid-19-202003181 point -

Don’t make a dickhead of yourself! I’ve rung the Stable and told them to use the old goodie, “The horse was in a shared paddock and drank from an infected water trough”. Worked in NZ so might do the trick here. On a more serious note, just let the investigation run it’s course. After that you can comment all you like. No sweat.1 point -

It will be like Alcatraz.......the Chinese Restaurant at Alex Park is an independent business so needs to 'be open for trade' but it has been stated that Harness followers will be excluded as customers. I wondered if the regular trotting group that has the front table there each week would venture out to get a glimpse of the last 50m of race. Sorry chaps ,no peeky , peeky ! I was thinking of loaning a mates Burkha but a security uniform may be the best bet ! The club should be saving money and have regulars like eljay to perform security and ID checks , voluntarlly of course !1 point -

Corona Virus Impact on Racing
Ragamuffin reacted to Archer for a topic
Bird Flu and Swine Flu were also corona viruses. To continue on this path of media endorsed armageddon, will lead to it. The virus is in the community already, possibly 200 people maybe 2,000, it is an AIRBORNE virus and it is not going anywhere. We have no choice but to let it run its course, then when common sense returns, it will be relegated to all the other viruses in the community. Remember the common Flu doesn't disappear completely it merely subsides for the summer, to reappear the next winter. Humans gradually become more resistant and fatalities lessen. This will be happen with the current virus. Remember this is not EBOLA, this is not going to kill everyone, but sure as shooting, panic and chaotic behaviour will create an unstoppable movement which will fk up the majority of people.1 point -
If I recall correctly from my spell on the Cambridge committee, the club has very little control over dates. The club would have very much liked more rational dates instead of the rush of meetings in the new year, weeks of no racing at other times and back to back meetings with Auckland all too frequently.1 point

Corona Virus Impact on Racing

When the vaccine comes more problems. Those with capital will borrow more to cash in on the huge increase in the sharemarket creating more division. Reports are out that Trump is trying to hijack the cure for Americans only or at least Americans first. Not convinced nature brought about this catastrophe. 20 years ago there was big debate about bio weapons so that any development would have gone underground and top secret.1 point -
$7000 races are we all mad ?
Ragamuffin reacted to john legend for a topic
In all honesty clubs and a system that expect harness racing to have a future with such small stakes are "dreamin Jonesy" the win barely covers 2 months training fees and reduces us to a level where profitability is almost an impossibility. The overheads of the industry with its mismanagement are too high to sustain the situation.. The owners and trainers cannot sustain losses as exit owners then exit trainers (and drivers) The TAB,RIU,Racing nz,.hrnz. and uncle tom cobbley sic etc all grab too big a piece of the pie and clubs are expected to pay higher stakes when they too struggle. The social aspect was always trotted out but nowdays no question. it cuts no ice as us owners cannot subsidise overheads with very little chance of a profit. No wonder less than 2000 foals are born each year.1 point -
$7000 races are we all mad ?
Ragamuffin reacted to john legend for a topic
all good suggestions but lets not lose sight of the huge overheads which are removed from the industry runs to 100s of millions each year that could be available for stakes but are "siphoned off " by inefficiency each year. Moving ratings and dollars around will not fix the problem unfortunately.1 point -
Global Warming / Climate Change
Ragamuffin reacted to Gruff for a topic
Vic Forbes Atmospheric modellers have dominated the climate debate for too long. It is time to ask well-informed geologists about Earth’s ever-changing climate history which is written indelibly in the rocks. Instead of wasting billions on bigger computers for yet more atmospheric models, let’s do some factual research on volcanoes beneath the oceans. Then ask some astro-physicists about the possible influence of solar cycles, sunspots, cosmic rays, cloud formation, earth magnetism, rogue asteroids and movements of the solar system through the galaxy. To believe mankind can counter the effect of these powerful natural climate controllers by trading carbon credits and capturing a few sea breezes and sunbeams using green energy toys is indeed a sad sign of the modern climate madness..... One things for sure, this NSW fire will guarantee safer fire seasons for years to come1 point
