My question would be, “WTF is he doing at a Conference in South Africa?”. What possible change could be made, eminating from a conference on South Africa? FFS, “All” trips, overseas junkets, swapsies etc should be abandoned/banned, until such time as the NZ Racing Industry gets the home scene sorted out. Unbelievable.

    The Box Seat-A Question??

I only watch the Box Seat occasionally but it would be a sad day if we lost this small window on Harness Racing. It is a tough ask to please everyone involved from the passionate small owner/breeder to the big punter. And we may not agree with the hosts' opinions at times, but as long as they offer something for most people, the show gets my full backing.

BS is no better than previous leaders of NZTR , so i go back to a question i asked a couple of weeks ago , " has this man done achieved anything of significance whilst in charge ? " , something that has made or is going to make difference to the future of NZ racing . Surely he could have made some small gain for us somewhere . Cause i'm blank .

  8. As an example for the above , i follow particular horses that are from families i have had . So this horse is a 3yo started out with Kris Lees , transferred after a couple of starts to the country . This horse had first start in Sept , has since then had 8 starts running one 2nd and one 3rd one 4th earning 2.5k for those to placings . Other 5 starts consisted of 9th , 6th , 8th , 7th , 8th , earning another 2.5k . Now obviously no champion , Mr Lees worked that out quickly , but 2.5k for those 5 starts certainly makes you feel better about the game , i know i would and the horse would get another prep as i would know i'm a chance of winning a race but i'm also going to get something back just for turning up . Everyone's a winner .

  9. Sometimes , often probably , our horses were persevered with for the fun but to answer your question , iv'e had plenty sacked after 1/2/3 starts because clearly lacked any ability . But i have many that whilst i knew were no champions and would never make open class were honest horses that actually enjoyed racing and we kept racing because we along with partners enjoyed going to the races for the fun . I also trained many for ourselves and was fortunate enough to make some healthy sales which allowed us to enjoy our (my) passion and we enjoyed the early mornings and people we shared the sport with . So usually we continued to race the ones that didn't have huge ability and we knew the liability but you understand with these horses you need everything in your favor to get a result . But you get to a stage where you also know your helping provide a product and it would be nice to be recognized for this instead always having to dig into your pocket . So to answer you question , with these types of horses you know your going to the races and chances are you won't get a cheque , a bit of fun but nada $$$ wise , but if i had got say , full free racing , which we did for a while , and then a starters bonus which could offset some of the transport costs say , well suddenly instead of $1500 for a 10 race prep with a couple of placings you get another $400 for 6 of those starts giving you $2400 on top then you only have training costs to worry about , well suddenly your not feeling like your always shelling out . Ok i know no one is holding a gun to my head but i know a lot of people who race horses feel the same and i know of a lot of horses over the years which would have been put back into work if what i am suggesting had been in place , also a lot of those owners have been lost to the industry . Paying starters bonus's is in place all major racing jurisdictions around the world why not here . Overall this would not be a huge cost to the industry but the returns in terms of starter numbers therefore betting turnover , they reckon each starter is worth 13k in turnover , and retaining owners would make a worthwhile strategy . But as some would say what do i know .

I expected something like that. He loomed up and then looked very unhappy in the straight, and horses he had pretty easily accounted for two weeks earlier were going past him.

  11. IMO any increase in stakes has to incorporate a rebate for unplaced runners . This will keep more lesser horses in work if the owners feel their getting something out of the game instead of always digging in their pockets . Every horse that races is a value to NZ racing no matter their level . Works great in Aus , and whilst we're not Aus a lot of their smallest meetings pay back past 5th . I know some of mine might have been kept going longer if i was getting some incentive to keep them in work .

  12. No not at all...I am an owner and I dont want any of the stakes lowered only increased so I wanted to see where they were coming from. Its been to easy for too long for people with no vested interest in racing to make the so called good decisions.

Did you say cut her some slack? If she couldn’t organise some prime time news footage of our success in Australia and Lisa Allpress in Saudi Arabia this weekend, then let her go completely and save a salary no doubt of about 100k. If it was me I would hang my head in shame and walk asap, or before I have to tell people at job interviews that I was let go, which we all know Now days means fired!

    Sprinter of the Year

Oh dear, I see that Buddy Boom’s Galaxy and Railway wins haven’t been enough to take him to the lead in Sprinter of the Year. The points allocated for Group Races should be indexed against the total number of races to protect against ‘inflation’. Or maybe repeat Group wins should attract exponential points. Or perhaps a panel should decide like thoroughbreds?

Just back from a conference in South Africa where he has learnt that comingling is a way forward. NZ has been leading the way with this for years. Reads like its all news to him. 5G ??? One reason the TAB moved to the new platform so they will be able to adapt quickly to this. All news to him?? One wonders how he would manage and at what cost the future environment he proposes without the NZ Tab.

  18. I'm with you Stables take the $30000 approx. to run the Box Seat and give it to the 3000 races run each year that's about $10 a race and don't worry about the harness stalwarts who love to see their programme on trotting each week. Soon we will be like harness racing haters on another forum who couldn't bring themselves to mention Dexter Dunn's magnificent achievement's. If you don't like Box Seat on the top right of your remote the off button is there push it.

    Sprinter of the Year

I thought that is how it was decided Pickel, not just the number of wins during the year. I may be wrong on that but remember arguing at conferences years ago that it was unfair just on number of wins. I may well be wrong on that but my argument was that a dog could wind every group race available to say a sprinter in NZ and not race in any other races and be obviously the best sprinter in NZ yet a dog that was able to win many races but not be capable of the group races would be judged ahead of it.

Cheers Iraklis

  23. I have just suggested elsewhere that we tend to use our stakes money inefficiently, with small fields going around for decent stakes and, often, quite good fields going around for poor stakes. I thought I would show how simple it would be to restructure things slightly and give much fairer stakes all round at no extra cost to the industry. I don't necessarily agree with the whole tiered concept, and I certainly don't agree with the ratings bands used, but to keep it simple I will stick with them. I would treat industry meetings and the typical Saturday meetings as follows. Industry Saturday Md $10,000 $12,000 65 $12,000 $20,000 72 $14,000 $24,000 82 $16,000 $28,000 Opn $18,000 $32,000 I have made the open class races $32,000 as that means the winner still gets $20,000, which is only about $1,800 less than current. No one would even notice. Why 65s were ever listed at $22,500 is beyond me, everyone would have been happy with $20,000. Currently we often have the same horses racing for $30,000 one week and $10,000 the next week, so why not accept that and rationalise the structure.

    The Box Seat-A Question??

At least it's there like any other programme on tele. It's over to you if you want to watch it. I don't simply because I don't have trackside TV so it doesn't worry me. Whether there is mileage for the TAB from this programme for the money invested in it - well that's another matter but if you don't watch it you really cannot have an opinion one way or the other.

  26. So you would back J Macc on a kiwi horse but not Bowman on a kiwi horse . Yet both have ridden predominantly in NSW/ VIC in past many years . Would J Macc get more out of Kiwi horse than a Bowman or any other top 10 OZ jocks .J Macc gets more out of horse than most but so much more than Bowman than you'd disregard Bowman on same horse .
    1 point
  27. I'm sure there are enough smart minds within racing to sort it out , and i don't mean the suits of the industry . There are plenty of knowledgeable people within racing to come up with a workable solution . The Australian system seems to work where horses can move between country/provincial and provincial/city racing . Saying that i think there was an issue a few years back with country horses not going to the city regarding the way horses were rated , maybe not , or maybe it was sorted . Has to be sorted , putting it in the too hard basket isn't an option anymore .

  29. Yes, agree. But then to weight appropriately we would have to have handicapping and ratings adjustments to reflect the different status of the race.....which matter has been addressed before by some very well informed observers. Too hard basket, apparently.

Correction....its 2004 Mercedes Derby to check bewildered Trump with hot fav owner Sir Patrick....Trump heard to say "Should have gone wider' Sir ! As to start time query......I always wary of first time posters . Usually 2 x sides to every story........can be hard to "gather the facts". There are risks to betting , other than fact that 95% of us lose. Ive always known if I had a bet on , a yellow slip , a printed ticket or on computer as confirmed with new balance. If I have an issue / query in Racing I go to the appropriate source. I don't think that is social media , which can be of interest at times ! Place bets as soon as possible if keen to get on.....I often get shut out cos I rely on the last minute. I'd get nothing done if it wasn't for the last minute !

Wouldn’t matter if they put a jet propulsion unit on his back and a Double Happy up his date - he still wouldn’t beat the current AUSSIE 3yo’s. They would be better off taking him home and set him for the NZ G1 races. He’ll go ok in those.

Just watched TV1 Sports News. Was sure there would be at least a mention and maybe video of Probabeel and Te Akau Sharks amazing wins yesterday , but nope despite numerous sports from cricket to tiddlywinks covered not one mention about one of NZs greatest race days. A lot of people wouldn’t have seen those races but still would be interested. Very disappointing.

    Miracle Mile

Well thanks for those well chosen inspiring and uplifting words guys geezuz!.......that said, it is what it is guys, and yes field may have been robbed of those we consider should be there, however, it is not to be; instead we get to go with those horses who are available, and have been able to qualify. How bout instead of bemoanin the state of the field, we actually consider those horses who have made it in, as I'm sure their owners and connections are actually quite chuffed and proud to even have a horse runnin in the Miracle Mile! We have some Kiwi reps in the race and they have drawn quite well, although Alta Orlando coulda fared better (I'm not sure if he's still a Kiwi?) but, they all made it in and appear to be well! Lets hope for a well run Mile with a slashin time and enjoy the competition for chrissakes, yeh! Cheers Iraklis
