    training fees

Really, it depends on how well you want your horse trained and “maintained” in good health. A friend of mine has a “handy” horse and until recently it was with a Melb Trainer - a G1 type of trainer. It did nothing at its latest 3 starts from a spell, so thought it might be better off in Qld. I when asked, I told him that if it’s got any ability, Tony Gollan will find it and he will give you an honest opinion. So, about 2 weeks ago, he transferred it to TG. First thing he did was get his Vet to scope the horse, dentist check, chiropractor/phisio check. There goes about $500! The horse arrived looking a treat so previous good trainer did a good job there. However, the chiro/physio found the horse had a tender part in a shoulder - which have occurred on trip from Melb to Bris. Nothing serious but it was bothering the horse. A bit of treatment and an injection of some sort and the horse has no soreness. Should be racing soon. TG is the leading trainer in BRis and has a beautiful stable complex at Eagle Farm Centre. He charges about $99 per day in full training. Then there’s Gastrazol $5.50 per day, track fees $5.50 per day, pentosan, saline drenches, pre-race vit’s, Ovumate (if a filly), etc etc etc! So really, it ends up about $4k per month. But, as some have pointed out, if you’re racing in a $10k maiden to win (after trainer -jockey %) about $5k, it’s a hard task and no matter your enthusiasm, it doesn’t make sense. Hence Stakes are very important. The Trainers have a job to do and have your horse fit AND healthy. It’s the Racing Administrators job to ensure that the Stakes are “high” enough to help at least provide relief to the winners/place getters, and encouragement to stay in. $10k races won’t do that. Owners have to net (imho) at least 3 - 4 months costs out of a win. JMHO.

Reminds me when I was of the same age... my mate had a flash new digital watch that had a remote control function to operate TVs. We would often tag along together to the races with the old man. Lots of punters would be gathered around the tv screens ontrack showing teletext divis, and races from other venues. When punters least expected it, usually about furlong out from the end of a race being screened on TV, my mate would point his watch to the telly and push a button on his watch.... zip... blackness. The ole standby button hahaha fark it was funny as, loved getting the punters angry as F. I must see if I can track another one of those watches down and relive my youth. Bloody greyhounds on a Sunday arvo at my TAB. Be great entertainment doing that again.

  3. While the suppression order may appear to be abhorrent it is unfortunately necessary . I believe I read some where this character has further charges ahead of him on other serious matters , naming him puts those prosecutions at risk and could deny justice for other victims .

    Changes to the magazine

" We are currently running the magazine at a loss" No shit Sherlock, I thought the magazine was a vital service that all members need not a profit making venture.. It's not quite North and South stuff now is it. There is a captive audience who have no option but to get it. I wonder if the non profit started when some bright spark decided to go a glossy A4 that is all hat and no cattle.

Your dreaming Cooper, first time at Matamata in 81 i watched Honest promise get put out of misery without a sight screen at the 200m, shocking sight a horse in distress particularly as a Young Jaffa , happens very rarely considering the amount of racing and one could argue the Human element is more disturbing....didnt see a post from you after Dom Mansour got squashed at Te Aroha or when his close friend almost got killed at Te Rapa the week after You follow any form of risky competive sport there will be casualties, keep it in perspective because these Animals are looked after better than those sleeping around Auckland Streets

  8. Quote from Herald today: Despite the suppression order, in the hours and days after the verdict overseas media and social media users - including in New Zealand - published the killer's name. Beard, the police officer in charge of the case, warned Kiwis about breaching suppression orders relating to the case just a day after the guilty verdict. "While we appreciate the public feeling around this case, we do want to remind the public that it is an offense to breach a court order such as a name suppression - this includes naming someone on social media," he said. Please tell me it wasn't our beloved poundforpound. The poor girls name gets dragged through the mud by the unscrupulous defense and the "scumbag murderer" gets name suppression??? The only reason he gets name suppression is that he's got a dodgy past. It only takes 2 seconds to find this "scumbag murderers" identity via other news outlets. The suppression law in NZ in this case is outdated and not fit for purpose. How is any of this fair and quantified as justice. Merry Chistmas to all RC members and take care on the roads.

Go to head quarters on viaduct best joint in auckland it was noisy there. We don't want the trots to become a morgue or a library.it was always going to be a difficult night..young people want noise action and we want them. it is a tough gig Auckland trots.trying to get people there 40 nights a year. I bet if you put the same rock band at the same place every week it would the crowd at the last one wouldn't be big. We see restaurants go broke every week. We need Leo Molly to put the a headquarters at the atc charge him no rent and give him a 1k make it 2 betting voucher every week. I'm serious. Maybe a topless bar.im serious.the greens or the Christians etc will stand outside and protest that would get us a few more. Trouble with that is I'd miss every race. Calling Leo Molly help.

  18. When those bent cops Schollum, Shipton and co were standing trial for the rape of Louise Nicholas, Shipton and Schollum had already been found guilty of rape so their names were suppressed until after they all had been found not guilty of raping Louise Nicholas. If Schollum & Shipton's names were not suppressed for the Louise Nicholas trial then it would have been highly likely that all of those on trial would have been found guilty of raping Louise Nicholas.

    Suppression Order - WOFTAM!

I hope its is no one from here too. Why on Earth this scumbag still has name suppression after the trial decision beats me. There have been thousands of internet searches for the name so it would be fair to say plenty of New Zealanders already know who he is. He probably does have previous form, but that is not going to influence any jury now, let alone a judge.

And the horse is running for decent coin there with plenty of races each week to aim at , 100 bucks a day at Riccarton might be different with odd race here and there for peanuts .

All good Tim .......you and those close to you bring a number of horses to the table . Hopefully it will keep both people and more horses in the sport and prolong some horses careers. Of course opposition to the cause will say that it denies pro and Junior both drives and income. Therefore it will be good if the Amateurs have horses and are contributing , especially in the north where horse numbers must be reaching a critical shortage. Desperate times calls for desperate measures !

Agree about the status quo TA but shifting capital around within the industry if that proves possible does nothing to improve revenue. In fact it has significant costs. It's a bit like shifting all the deck chairs to the high side of a lilting Titanic and getting people to sit up there. Only delays the inevitable. The ship is still going under.

Good points. I have heard many, many opinions from all sorts who nod sagely and intone that 'tracks need to be closed to take us forward ' ...but, when asked how that works, I get vague assertions of costs. I know several, mainly volunteer-staffed clubs which have provided detailed financials that clearly show how little they cost. The meeting payment of 37.5k that goes to every club across the board to run the meeting, still goes with that club if it shifts venue - so that isn't saved, is it? ....and its only peanuts anyway, as is the value of some of the rural club lands. The bottom line is revenue. How closing tracks will increase punter losses beats me. Messara identified a niche market given our time-slot, and for this reason he pushed for a few modern, high quality facilities to showcase our product at that time. No argument there I don't think, we all can accept that change needs to happen. But this arse-about-face way of going just seems to me to be so counter-productive. Pitty will agree with me here, I know - there is nothing wrong with the Riccarton track in the summer when the going is not rain [ or irrigation ] affected. It is pretty reliable when the weather is stable. Central, metropolitan, ideal to start running races in that particular time-slot for off-course exposure . So why aren't we doing it to see how it might work going forward ? Is it smart to decimate our existing racing structure for a mere notion that this will be the game-changer? ...and RITA, or whatever it is going to call itself, has to get its head around how thumping punters/betting operators with yet more taxes just aint gonna help, long term.

I haven't really wanted to get involved in this debate as it seems to be going nowhere. But really, I have no idea what your involvement in the industry is as you don't seem to have a deep understanding of how things work. The problem with NZ racing is not the small clubs, like Hokitika. The problem for very many years has been the poorly performing major clubs. How long do you think the benefits of selling off all the assets of the smaller clubs will last? My guess would be about two years before the metropolitan clubs piss it all up against the wall. The whole thing about selling off the Hokitikas and Wintons is purely a distraction; it is just a case of certain people trying to look like they are doing something decisive, when really they don't have the faintest idea what to do.. I haven't seen a single report that has acknowledged that the biggest problem is the poorly performing major clubs. You wonder where some of these experts come from. Can you imagine the laughter in Aussie if someone suggested they close Goulburn and Cessnock to make Randwick and Rosehill boom. I like to think the ATC would have the decency to say "look, don't bother on our behalf". Interestingly, not a single major club in NZ has come out in favour of the small clubs.

Without rehashing all that has gone before - in a nutshell, the smaller clubs have been deprived of their share of betting revenue under an unfair funding schedule in order to prop up uneconomic larger clubs. Many have had to suck up crap dates as well. We all know the status quo is not an option, but, bugger me, I can't for the life of me see this draconian approach working the oracle either.

Once again a bunch of buffoons with very little intelligence doing things the way they've always done them and for some reason thinking that things will change. There are a number of intellectual assets that could be exploited as long as some intelligence was brought into the picture. A racing club has rights, and had certain rights before Chittick, Aklin, Bettle, Hickton et al put a stop to them in 2003. This mob will go down as the administrators who seriously forked things up for all of us and anyone else involved. Chittick simply didn't get it, Aklin somehow missed prosecution for the pokie rorts that were going on (wonder how he got left alone), Bettle was a political stooge in there to do a job and Hickton needed to get to the $1b turnover to get his bonuses. At this time a racing club had the right to operate their own tote, offering bets, under terms and conditions approved by the RIB, and be able to engage in inter track betting. A tote is a method or apparatus of offering bets but had to be overseen by either a member of the TAB or responsible person. A bet is described as a wager where the outcome is influenced by an element of skill and judgement. Inter track betting meant betting on those meetings where the event was held at another venue. So what does that mean you might ask. Could it have meant that any race club could have set up a Race-ino where it could have offered anything that was a bet type, in any form, on any hardware or software format that could have included pokie type machines which were live coverage of horse racing and sporting events held at other venues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Probably is the answer to this. Could we still do it today?...probably is the answer to that. So the question would be why do we need a race course/ race club? The answer could be because we have the potential to improve the financial prospects of racing by not redeeming the right to accepting bet types on racing soil. So what would we need to do to get this all going? The right to offer every bet available to us legally, a building with hot and cold running water, big sports/ racing presentation screens, Dolby stereo surround sound, comfortable seats, good food and drinks, and nice people making sure we're all comfortable. What do we need to do to achieve that?....a race track with a building with electricity and running water, and the ability for a racing club to secure Capex in order to bring each club building up to scratch to that punters can view seriously good sporting events and racing in the comfort of a cinema/ casino style environment. Now why were you agreeing to get rid of all the clubs?
