    Matt Cross

By the end of today, Matt Cross will have called about 72 races in 8 days. He is an exceptional talent. Every caller makes mistakes, I don't think Matt has fluffed anything important this week - and even if he does, we should all recognise that race calling is an art, a demanding one done under pressure of immediacy and public expectation. Not many people are prepared to try it, let alone make a career of it. Best wishes to him, he will become one pf the best, and probably go on to a international career.

    Fixed odds display

Change channel on your TV and then change back - this will get rid of the Delay that kicked in when you hit rewind on MySKY.

    Hitting wheel discs

Haven't seen one of these for a while. Can anyone explain how this can happen 3 days after winning the NZ Cup? "CRUZ BROMAC - broke after 100 metres. Driver B Orange explained the gelding had been striking its wheel discs in the early stages."

    Can anyone tell me...

You are correct, Racing didn't need Winston to drive it into the ground, it has been doing that happily all by itself for 30 years.. So to blame Winston for any of Racing's problems really is a bit harsh. I give him credit for at least trying to do something, but I don't agree with any of his methods.

Yes, but why not make them both 400k if that's the money you have and sensibly run them the otherway around so the fillies can have their crack then tackle the colts if they want to?

Berri, you have commented about this before. They do things like this with no clue about the purpose of the Pattern.

How the hell is the general punter supposed to understand that ????? .. user friendly is a term that comes to mind, make things user friendly so that the majority of us get it, and know what we are punting on. Complicated is a huge turn off as per One more laps point.

  9. It was a poor Cup field and the smallest I can remember, but I could easily be wrong there. But at the same time a very deserving winner, The first Cup winner I can recall from Timaru - pity that centre is to be closed down. It is just a sign that we have no established or up and coming stayers in the country. I don't think a very wet Spring helped the preparation of many potential contenders either. Also the southern candidates get very harshly weighted for winning $12,000 open races at Gore.

  11. I agree John. I prefer pacing races myself, but I suppose it was Dominion Handicap day so fair enough to give the trotter more prominence

Perhaps if you both understood how the different types of bet options operate especially the tote then you might care to revise what you have said. The average TAB takeout rate on Final Field bets is around 5-6% (or it used to be) and is not a guaranteed return. The takeout rates on tote products is around 3-4 times higher and IS a guaranteed return so why the TAB would encourage FInal Field place bets over tote isn't plausible. Example - Punter 1 places $20 FF place bet on a horse paying $2FFP - The TAB gets $1.20 from the bet (if FF takeout rate is 6%) once placed. If the bets loses then the TAB gets your whole $20 and makes $20. If the horse is successful then the punter gets $40 and the TAB gets their $1.20 and loses $38.80 on the bet - a major negative return. Tote - Punter places same bet on the tote - TAB gets 14.25% of every $1 on commingled pools so TAB gets a guaranteed $2.85 - the balance of your $20 bet goes into the pool to make up the place dividend pool which determines what your horse ultimately pays if successful - as the TAB pays out every $1 in that pool it doesn't win extra if your bet is unsuccessful nor does it lose anything if it comes in - it gets its guaranteed $2.85. A better result on the whole on most occasions - so why would TAB want to discourage this - I think not. As for the bet changing odds from $9 to $2.80 - are you new to betting or do you not understand how a tote works?????? If it was a minor Aussie harness meeting there was probably less than $1k in the tote win pool when your saw the horse and maybe $12-$15k when it closed. If the horse you saw was well favoured (and 80% of betting occurs in the last 30seconds before race close) then it's pretty easy to see how the odds changed as the weight of money dragged it down - the fact that movement didn't show for about a minute after the race started is purely due to the time the TAB systems take to calculate the dividend movements based on that late money taken - which normally takes time. Hope that helps you both

Thankfully you never make a mistake Ted - its live that he calls it and the horse finished 5th. As Whyisit mentioned she was in the call early so obviously you didn't listen to the radio call too well if you had to check the results after ... Young bloke making a start ... give him a break eh

Tom is doing a great job in Hong Kong...I would think the money is good up there and he may end up with the top job there as well.

  19. Sit one out instead of going to the rail? It's the $3 favourite in a $2 million race, you don't need to ride for luck.
