  1. You think you have problems. Try staying up for Happy Valley races. The midnight hour throws the website into a tizz and also the fact Hong Kong does not allow fixed odds bets. The website was written for sports betting so without fixed odds its totally confused. On a technical note the real time updating of tote odds slows considerably in the last few minutes before a race. This is a cop out as it means there is less stress on the system whereas the old system kept updating every few seconds before the race. Proof positive that the new system is technically inferior. With commingling I would assume Australian bettors are at an advantage compared to NZ punters. Procuring the website would have to be the worst business decision ever made in NZ.

    NZ Cup

You're sort of right. Every now and then they were the same day I recall at least twice being on course when it happened...once was when Tawriffic won the Melbourne Cup in 1989 and the other 1995 when Doriemus won the MC. Both times the races were on the 7th November...for some reason the Melbourne Cup wasn't on the 1st It was a real pain for the TAB when it happened so I think they changed the definition of when the NZ Cup was run to avoid any future clash.

    In my view

Most of the problems facing the Industry today stem from lack of horse numbers combined with the ever growing flow of horses being exported due to what are left, which mainly those the Aussies/Yanks/Canuks can't even place which are so far out of their depth and forced to run out of their class ability just to get a run. A year or two back I seem to remember that there was a call to tighten the qualifying standards but this was met with horror by the clubs who (and rightly) were after anything just to enable them run meetings. So we are doomed to a sport that looks more and more to the filthy rich who have even less competition with their top price stock than ever before. Unfortunately this situation was allowed to develop unchallenged by the intelligentia who not only condoned the siphoning off of numbers but also applauded the studs who inflated their costs to a level that the industry was hard pressed to sustain. Furthermore the TAB (or Racing Board or whatever other disguise they operate under) were allowed unchallenged to take over the Industry (including the gallops & poopers) to a state now where they dictate and the only resistance from the heirarchy of the codes is yes sir, yes sir. I can almost guarantee nobody can say just what percentage of the actual money invested by punters is returned. It is surely time the codes said this is our product not yours and we will run it, thank you.

  6. I used to think that change could be effected through rational and constructive debate. However, harness racing seems to suffer from a distinct lack of foresight and direction. There are some well known signs of ineffective leadership. Looking at the list below, I suspect that HRNZ and its leadership team would tick all these boxes!! Communication problems Inability to make decisions Poor performance Lacking conflict resolution skills Quick to blame instead of taking responsibility Slow reaction to change Lack of focus and attention to detail Comfortable with the status quo Forget about the customer Lack personal and team accountability If this is the case, how do we make changes. The rating system is just one aspect of the Industry that has been met with Universal condemnation. Every change seems to simply try and paper over some of the cracks, and simply doesn't work I dont have all the answers, and readily acknowledge that there is NO silver bullet to fix the problems we are facing, but its a compilation of great ideas, and successful implementation of these that may see us survive to 2030 and beyond.

  7. someone please inform me how to locate Final Field markets for Ashburton Trot Group races on Monday. I realise that this is a galloping forum but the process to locate final field NZ odds for meetings not listed on the main menu days headings must apply to both codes. I know the markets are open as a mate had a bet at an outlet on one of the races. $50,000,000 plus spent on an abomination of a betting platform that should be a total embarrassment to whoever the buffoons were that approved and developed it. The bloody thing has only 4 days at a time listed in the day menu so any early markets that come out 5 or 6 days prior to the raceday don't appear and it becomes a mission to find them. It would be easier to find Wally or Wally's as you wouldn't have to look far as you only have to begin at Head Office of the TAB in Jackson Street. Remembering that this nightmare was sold to the Industry and Punters as been easier and quicker to use. I remember one clown coming on here saying that it was only old people who couldn't use it, $#%K me how can you use something when you can't find it. 1 click in the past to go to markets like I am looking for when it was the old bet site now you click half dozen times and still can't find what your looking for. How %$%^en hard would it have been to list 6 days on the main menu to make your customers use of the site easier, no doubt the mugs who designed and approved it had no clues that final field markets sometimes come out 6 days prior to the meeting. You ever heard the saying 'they wouldn't know what day of the week it was' well that couldn't apply better than with this TAB outfit. Go back to the old site add cashout and it becomes a far better platform to use for all concerned and would leave the new one where it belongs 'obsolete'.

    Why is it so?

Michael Walker, one of NZ and Oz’s best jockeys, fresh from a Geelong Cup triumph on Prince of Aran, has just “ONE” ride at The Valley on Cox Plate day - Consensus in the last! WTF is wrong here? How can such a successful Jockey get only one ride? It’s a regular thing happening in the City. He gets thrown the crumbs here and there.

    One for Gubellini

Invariably names crop up again. I see a horse in the States under the name Firing Line. We had a 'Firing Line' farm hack back in the 50's and I recall something by him winning a few races in that era. Used to know the mare too but the memory's a bit faded. Do you have any info on him just for interests sake please.

    EGOMANIACAL

Is Egomaniacal the most under-rated greyhound in the country? Congratulations to his young trainer for continuing to produce this dog in winning condition. And, "speaking" of young trainers, what a record Daniel Lane is achieving. How far can Bolty go? We know how fast!! And, while I am here, and referring to trainers, congratulations to Raymond Harold Adcock on being granted Life Membership of the CGRC at its AGM on Wednesday night this week.

    NZ Cup

As you state, Waller often has about 75% of the starters in staying races in Sydney. It is obviously not a good look, one trainer having most of the starters in a race like the flying stakes, but surely the problem isn't with one trainer being too good, the problem is with the other trainers not being competitive. Some of you almost seem to be suggesting a dominant trainer needs to be handicapped somehow to give the others a chance. Perhaps the All Stars horses should all have to start 20 metres behind.. Over the years there has often been one trainer that dominates for a period in Canterbury, for various reasons, it is just unusual that this period of dominance seems to have lasted longer than most.

    NZ Cup

The two Cups used to clash every seven years or so. I can recall being at Addington the year that Black Knight won the Melbourne Cup. Obviously it didn't help turnover so about 20 years or so ago it was changed so that NZ Cup week is always the week after Melbourne Cup week.

She is still the 3rd highest rated horse left in the 2,000 Guineas and the 2nd highest rated horse left in the 1,000 Guineas, so on that basis not a bad price this weekend.

  19. Another problem to add to the list. Yesterday I couldn’t put money into my account. Tried a few times and finally got through to operator who said yes they were having problems and to try later. Also said to check my account in case money had gone through twice. Sure enough it had. Rang them today and they credited my account. One way to get figures up I suppose. One can only imagine what it’s going to be like on Melbourne Cup day!,

    NZ Cup

I'm thinking that NZ Cup should have a name change since can anyone really believe it and the Dominion are attractive options for owners of NI horses? The costs to the owners are so high (paying 30%+ of the stakes) that if you don't have a horse that you are certain can get in the 1st 3, you are better off to stay at home.

    sad loss

racing lost one of the good guys of the racing industry today. Campbell Moncur died after a long illness. He was one of the most knowledgable individuals who worked for many years for the TAB and the set up and early operation of trackside. A big loss and sad at only 65 . RIP... Campbell. John Penney

    NZ Cup

DKC I gather you would not be a chris waller fan either!! get used to it as the good trainers are always going to get the " flying machines ", more and more as fees become higher and stakes go south. every owner wants the best of the best to train their very expensive horses. at least we know you horses will not be trained by all stars & waller etc. good luck .
