    Trackside

Anyone else nauseated by these Trackside adverts? “equal of any in the word" "world class”. Really? Compared with where? Probably somewhere English isn’t the first language! Honestly, we are sick of monotone preview shows, amateur-hour “betting strategies”, and talking heads. Come on Trackside get off your arses and produce something worthwhile. How about some weekly trackwork – and not just 5 strides past the winning post and pointless trainer’s waffle. And then some stewards footage and sectional timing analysis – proper pre and post-race analysis. And on the day would it be asking too much to see every runner pre-race? And for more than 2 seconds?

  2. Trumpie....that is not a good watch. Forget the sensationalism...the cruelty factor of the workers at the slaughter house was unacceptable. This is something that NZ Racing needs to really get right. One of the problems though is that humans in NZ are getting further and further away from horses due to lack of opportunity, health and safety, lack of funding for the alternative horse usages, and laziness. It's not going to get any better either.

Look at the ground it made up in the video between the 16s and 24s marks. At that rate it's going to win by a couple of lengths. Then watch it change stride and slow down at 24s, then put in a couple of decent strides at 27s, then ease up again to lope along outside the leader, refusing to go past. THEN remember that prizemoney comes from the punters, and they only have so much patience for backing the best dog in the race and watching it play silly buggers and throw the race away. "Don't back the dog if you don't trust it to give 100%". Yeah, sure. But if there's one of them in every race then punters won't bother betting in any races; if you can't trust a dog to try, you can't trust it not try either. You can't back it, but you can't bet against it. Sport is easier to figure out than greyhounds anyway, and you get more entertainment for your buck from an 80 minute game than a 31 second race. Plus if you tell people you like greyhound racing they think you're weird, while if you like Rugby or Football you're a normal bloke. If it wouldn't have even gotten a warning in Australia, maybe it should head over there. I took part in the Kiwi Punting Champs heat last week, on Friday's Addington meeting. It was hard going early on; the fave in the first had had two tickets for failing to chase and wore blinkers, in Race 3 the fave had marred on debut then taken three trials to (hopefully) get right, then Race 4 had a favourite who had marred on debut and needed SEVEN trials before being allowed to make his second start, 602 days after his first. If I hadn't had to bet on every race under the rules of the competition, I wouldn't have gone near any of those races. I avoid Addington in general, even though I bet more on NZ Greyhounds than anything else. But I didn't realise it was this bad.

    Can you Imagine

Seemingly racing in Keeneland is held in much higher regard than our industry here is. More and more it seems to me that the image of racing in NZ is on the decline & I'm not sure that there is enough impetus, or even willingness to halt the slide. At one end of the bell curve, it is perceived as being 'elitist while at the other the perception is that it is full of rogues and vagabonds. The area in the middle is populated by those who either see it as a sunset industry or feel it is an industry that they themselves wouldn't want to work in (hard work, long hours, low pay, limited future prospects) so consequently, don't want their kids to go there either. Twenty years ago if I told people I met aged 20-60 that I lived, breathed and made a living from racing a reasonable percentage of those people would react quite positively and seem interested. Today, most new people I meet (outside of those inside the industry) don't react positively. They usually know nothing about any facet of the industry, wouldn't dream of having a bet (sports or racing) even when told it is easy to do online & they certainly don't see a day at the races as being a great day out. It is almost as if the industry is so out-of-the reach of the ordinary person, tainted by a poor image, and/or so meaningless that it is off the radar of most. Its not in-vogue or 'sexy' and career-wise it isn't encouraged through ignorance of what might be possible. Despite the efforts of many industry players (fragmented efforts for the most part), we are still in a slide that isn't going to be revived by merely injecting more money into stakes. It fills me with sadness that I am devoid of ideas for change & can't see a light at the end of this dark tunnel. Perhaps, there is a revival just around the corner, I certainly hope so, but have no idea where it might be coming from.

    Jacinda Ardern

After 9 years of neglect and the runaway inflation it stoked, people cannot afford a roof over their heads. Bringing in workers to keep wages low,so profits are high is no help either. Labour is the lesser of 2 evils, still beholdin to big business and the core rot of debt slavery.

Suckers all right , the 15000 new beneficiaries will cost about $8,000,000 a year to keep just for one year , the only reason we have 15000 more beneficiaries is government policy . They don't know what they are doing .

  8. I recall a post you made quite while ago about the need to accept that horses [ and other stock ] will, at times, need to be destroyed. Do it properly, you said, humanely and with dignity. [ much abbreviated from the original ] More relevant now than ever.

    In my view

How long is a piece of string? On one hand the answer would appear to be more horses racing. But then we would complain that the better horses would win the better staked races and the poorer horses would be eliminated from the fields - clubs like Auckland would no doubt love to get back to the "glory" days when they were selective as to which grade of horse raced there. So the owners of the poorer horses would have to travel their pride & joys expensive distances to get a race and if they lucky enough to win after the trainer/driver/float operators etc etc got their bite the owner would be left out of pocket. Run more races you say - but the well dressed we know betters would not grant licences for further racing and also the money being wagered these days would no doubt financially debar this. So we are back to where we are today - the authorities don't give a rats and the only ones to profit are the owners of Jimbo As i ask - how long is a piece of string.

    Hawera

On course reported up %100 Helped by strong punter club having a good day and young people enjoying them selves some betting as well. This along with large quality fields on a good track surface ,yes it was an enjoyable day at the races. . Hawera race course is sheltered to the northerly rains by MT Egmont, so does not get the rain that other parts of Taranaki get, this together with the free draining soil makes this course well suited to spring racing ! next race meeting is at the end of January 2020. Not so clever. New Zealand racing is operated on two islands, there are courses where racing should be conducted to suit the weather. eg spring racing Hastings, Hawera etc. Now all we need is independent on course only bookies and racing will be booming. regards Red from naki.

    Caulfield Cup Field?

New Zealand galloper Crown prosecutor is in doubt for the Caulfield Cup after presenting with lameness when examined on Thursday. Racing Victoria released the following statement on Thursday afternoon: Racing Victoria (RV) veterinarians have today completed their inspection of the 18 starters and three of the four emergencies for this Saturday’s Stella Artois Caulfield Cup (2400m). The Stephen Marsh-trained Crown Prosecutor will be re-examined by RV veterinarians tomorrow morning to determine the gelding’s suitability to accept after he presented with lameness in his right forelimb. Second emergency Neufbosc (Hayes, Hayes & Dabernig) is currently stabled in Sydney so was unable to be examined today. The horse will be transported to Melbourne tomorrow and inspected by an RV veterinarian in the afternoon. All other horses were passed fit to race. An update on Crown Prosecutor and Neufbosc will be provided tomorrow following their examinations.

Time to Remember, you have obviously got your magnifying glass out, and turned your imagination up to fool. No case to answer. Would not even have got a warning in Australia. If you're keen on searching for the worst in everything - buy yourself a mirror - it will give you a lifetime supply of fault to find.
