Sadly, there won't be any admissions of error. The track closure notion has been beloved of Jackson and Saundry from well before the Messara report, and also held by some of the bigger names in the training ranks. Clearly, J.M was ill-advised on several issues.

  5. THE TORCH

    Hawera

Back to its best?? Jeez what have you been watching. Last year it was a firm track again and brilliantly presented. The new caretaker has carried on the great work of Karl Stratton (the previous caretaker, now President) who had the place looking like Augusta. But it doesnt matter now eh. The "2 minute wonders" have got what they want from Mr Messaras drive thru assessment of NZ racing and will think that closing down the likes of Hawera (who actually own their land - it is NOT the councils!) is the best thing for our industry. What I look forward to are those clubs who survive (for now) and the pressures they will be under. They will have NO EXCUSES for poor turnover or small crowds. None at all. But the formula will bring prosperity (Tui ad). When they do not come up trumps thats when things get really interesting. Who goes next?? New Plymouth? Pukekohe? Otaki? All second tier courses who are 4th tier achievers. Its going to be an amusing decade ahead. Who will be the first to admit they were wrong to get rid of our better clubs of today?

  6. A group 2 handicap win and a group 3 handicap sprint win , the MVRC won't succumb to people wearing kids shark hats and bump out Group 1 WFA winners if they want any credibility for their race on the world stage .

$100 note....... poor old ohoka and his daily decreasing cnn fake news brothers have regurgitated all this conspiracy type stuff daily for the last 3 years, didn't work out too well for them...... us on the better side don't need too stress on this sort of stuff we get too watch trump win daily while the left wing democrat nutters keep dancing too the tune of radical socialism which has as much chance of engaging with american voters as jacinda winning a popularity contest in taranaki......... as long they keep attacking the church, talk about taking the guns away, massively higher taxes, no oil and gas, worlds ending in 12 years, open boarders, no private health insurance free health care for illegals, trump will be there for a fair while yet........ let the left try and convince themselves they are on the right track don't fall in to their trap.........

  9. An academic who thinks I'm a bit obsessed with thoroughbreds has posed an interesting question: 'The Kenyan breaking the 2 hour marathon reminded me that recently someone I know said they had gone back and looked at the winning times of the Kentucky Derby and it appeared that there had been no increase in horses speed in 50 years (or so) perhaps even longer. Is this true in general. I would think that improvements in nutritional knowledge and training regimes would have led to an increase in horses just as it has in humans?' I found the times for the Kentucky Derby online, and produced a graph. 2019 is on the left, 1918 on the right. Quickest in modern times was Secretariat in 1973, 1.59.4 Slowest Sunday Silence in 1989 2.00.5 Weather & track conditions obviously have a bearing, but it would appear that over the past 60 years, times have only fluctuated by 5 seconds in a race of 2 minutes duration. What is this telling us? Since the Thoroughbred is a closed stud book, we aren't introducing any new genes, just shaking the genetic dice. Thoughts, please

  11. UN running out of money , demanding governments increase taxes to pay for the climate scam . UN bosses are demanding that taxpayers in America and other nations hand over more money now or face global catastrophe. Trump reacted to the whining by calling on the UN to go look for money elsewhere. American taxpayers pay more than 185 other UN member states, combined. And in return for all that money , the UN constantly attacks Americans’ liberties while praising and aiding mass-murdering regimes. The man-made global-warming hypothesis — was described by Trump as a “hoax” to benefit the dictatorship enslaving mainland China. Goodonya Trumpy .

    Are races getting faster?

Records are made to be broken but records are unlikely to fall very often until we get over this love affair with irrigation and get back to genuinely fast tracks.

  15. Interesting to compare it with the standardbreds who have got much faster over time. The 2 minute mile is well and truly smashed these days.

  17. Now that betting has opened on Consensus for tomorrow (cant believe her odds), I've taken the multi. However, I actually took a $1 Multi on every possible combination of Wins or Places in each of the 4 races... so spent the princely sum of $16. The maximum collect will be $14,435 if they all Win down to the smallest collect of $126 if they all run a Place. Just hope that TAS gets a run in the Cox Plate.

  18. I’m not sure why you would make such a statement Sicko. I believe that all workplaces can be susceptible to unfortunate accidents or mishaps, whatever you want to call them. I had a 21yo employee hang himself from a forklift, all because he was upset over his 18yo girlfriend leaving him. Should I be liable for leaving a forklift at his disposable? There are unfortunate incidents happening everyday - even the knife and fork are plastic on business class flights These days. If a passenger stabs another in the eye with a plastic knife, is the Airline to blame? Should passengers eat with their fingers? The Stable incident referred to in this article is a tragedy for “All” concerned. A 3yo was run over in a Childcare Centre car park in Melbourne today. The child died. Who are we to blame? The parent for not looking out? The poor driver for not being alert? The Centre for possibly not having traffic guardians? Accidents happen and sometimes even the utmost care can’t avoid them. You’re post and insinuation re guilt are not needed. It doesn’t help anybody and is not needed. I’m sure SMcKee doesn’t need or deserve any reminders of this sad case of a workplace accident.

Reportedly around the $160,000 on course Not bad. I guess the Messara mantrix followers believe that local on course money will happily go down to Awapuni Trentham when Hawera closes.

    Light Reading

Some light reading for anyone who might be interested in the pattern of racing, and has an hour or two to spare. On the positive side, our racing appears to be stronger than ever before, with more group two and three races than we have ever had: 27 groups two's this season, 5 more than 2013/14; and 44 group three's, 8 more than 13/14. https://loveracing.nz/OnHorseFiles/Downloads/Report of the NZPC 2019 Final.pdf

  21. That was great ride on Flit, that got up by the barest margin, and sent me out. What a pity that I have been eliminated from one of the greatest racing competitions that I have seen. Many thanks to all involved.
