Most of the good stallions will throw jumpers as well because they throw 'athletes' and so will succeed at whatever disapline you ask of them.

With the demise of the NZRB, go to their web site and read what Glenda has to say about her time with the board. The part i found amusing was that she is leaving the board in a better shape now, then when she comes into it,Is she serious?

Boss Hogg and Blue the race was at the Taumaranui meeting at Waipa on the 26/7/75. Barwyn won by a head from Dumar and paid $140.65 and $25.95. He was a massive horse by the obscure Golovine stallion Isobar trained by his Rotorua owner trainer TP Fuller. I was there that day and had a dollar each way on him because he was ridden by Tauranga apprentice Mike Sullivan. Mike and I at that time rode a lot of track work at Tauranga where he did his apprenticeship with his Uncle Syd Sullivan.

It's inevitable some horses are going to go over hurdles/ steeples later in their careers regardless of how they are bred. I personally don't put a lot of store in breeding when assessing their ability on certain track conditions either. A number of good summer sprinters/gallopers have turned out good jumpers on wet tracks. The only rule is there are no rules.

I think Sir T and Zabeel both sired Gt Northern winners. Do you judge their stud careers on that fact alone ..............

Nothings changed, the same carpet etc inside & the outside seating is still dusty and covered in birdshit. If they leave it another 5 yrs the carpet will be back in vogue.

How wonderful to read about our amazing mare Daria’s Fun. We still breed from the family having retained her daughter, and grand daughters. Since we’ve have Sword in Stone and Secret Spirit being the most prominent performer so far. Her 3.15.59 record still stands in Australasia for 3200m - what an experience to have had her.

Champion bloke M.D Sullivan. Have to admit, he was my idol back in those days. Great front running rides on Hudu, Air New Zealand apprentice special on Gold Wire for Jack Winder. Wow, going back a bit now. Almost killed at Rotorua I think, still see him around the traps, used to help out at Waikato RC. No better bloke, so down to earth! Went and saw him four times in 10 days at the hospital, the ups and downs of the racing game!

Comin Through ex Waller in Hunt Club , looks like his ability has gone for the moment . He's with a very good young trainer though . I think Chilean might go OK at decent ew odds in that. The two Wesley Ward runners in first and two in last will blast out as his runners always do just a matter if they last , Anna Fast and Kimari looked stylish winning maidens but those wins on dirt , Karak in last should go on turf looking at breeding .

I was impressed with how winner powered home looks a beautiful horse , and shows imho Frankel to be even more versatile in the breeding game . He's had a few hurdle winners so far . Anyway how do you rate these stallions , Sadlers Wells has sired Pridwell multiple wins in top staying hurdles , Synchronised Cheltenham Gold Cup winner , Istabraq the best hurdler there's ever been a simply brilliant racehorse .I backed horse once when at Cottenham PTP over 3 miles called Fire and Ice by Sadlers Wells , it stayed ok but very slowly . Galileo has sired Supasundae top line staying hurdler won Aintree stayers this year, Celestial Halo a top staying hurdler for years and Annie Power has produced a foal by Galileo that you have to think was produced for the winter game . Danehill sired Specular winner in Oz and went ok over sticks in UK for Jonjo O'NEIL plus over low grade hurdlers . Njinsky sired Play the Act multiple winning chaser plus others Nureyev sired Prokoliev multiple winning hurdler plus others And so on.

  17. "And I was thinking to myself, This could be heaven or this could be Hell , Then Tim lit up a candle and showed me the way "...............it's a lovely place ! And in the room we will invite all the big hitters ,especially those with the big ideas and money.....the NZRB ,Local Government , NZ Harness , even Auckland Racing Club etc , folk who should see it in their best interest to make ATC great again. But most of all the participants ,those who put the show on ....and many younger folk who will continue to put the big dance on long into the future ! Are they out there ?

I note that the world's most famous Jumpers' Flat, also known as the Ascot Stakes, run over 4000 metres, was won by a son of Frankel. I was hoping Frankel's stock would be better than that. He was such a wonderful racehorse.

I am sure the former Minister Of Racing, Nathan Clown would have been in the House offerring his learned advice given that he contributed so much to NZ Racing. After all he head hunted fellow National Party hack, Glenda Hughes who head hunted John (Clease) Allen. Nathan Clown also gave us the all weather track at Addington

    mick guerin

I hear on National Radio today media commentator Gavin Ellis made mention of Mick Guerin's journalism on the racing pages. He noted he puts 'human interest' into his racing stories. It seems like MG is a very talented Journalist .......knows an awful lot about Harness , learning more all the time about gallops and knows a lot of the big players. Add to this his knowledge on rugby ,his verbal talents ,he still looks good , he comfortable with MC roles and gets work with League as well and sports in general and one could conclude NZ Racing is lucky to have him. Brought up on the West Coast , surely the best pedigree around and putting more and more skin into the game with ownership he appears the complete package. Aussie harness use him and I gather he is currently on deck at Royal Ascot.....WOW ! I often read on here negative comments about his writing , his personality and his pronunciation etc. Is this just envy ? Yes I remember he was once sacked by NZ Racing Board.....but that 9 years ago...he well and truly back. He's very good IMO !

  25. When the previous CEO was explaining how well she wasdoing it did not ring true with me knowing a little about failed trotting clubs.!! All of the comments here are valid and many of us sounded warnings many months ago on this forum. TO SELL OFF land with great tenants as you say is short term desperation and can only be detrimental to the Club in the long term. ATC needs assistance as can not be permitted to collapse. HRNZ must seek Govt. help if necessary to keep the club solvent and may need to put in place a crisis management structure acceptable to them and the bank. I believe it is time for head out of sand for the present Board as any further" shocks" could see the Bank put the Club into receivership. I warned of this possibility at another Club and the only real response from many board Members , 'hrnz would never let it happen " I personally was having weekly meetings with the Bank as to cash flow and with Council to seek relief . ATC is Harness Racing in the North and must survive for the future of harness racing.

    waimate

I just had a look at the final 400s from Waimate. People and cars lined up the entire length of the straight, and well past the finish post as well. And from the first race until the last race. I bet Trentham and Riccarton would love to see a crowd like that. I wonder what the official attendance and turnover was. Does anyone know if a representative from the NZRB and NZTR attended the meeting and gave a small talk thanking them for their efforts over the years and reassuring them that them falling on their swords was for the greater good of the whole industry and the whole industry would be much better off without them? I am quite serious there, does a delegation of Racings "leadership" and big picture thinkers attend "final meetings" like that just to let the locals know people are thinking of them. Was Glenda there? Does she know where Waimate is? NZ's best shot-putter does come from Timaru so I imagine she does know where Waimate is.

Please explain. NZTR is the author of its own mismanagement and has simply blamed it on the TAB for years. Now they have taken over by stealth well see how good they are. The export industry seemed to be the focus of the submissions in Parliament . Taking over clubs and assets seems to be their next step.
