  1. Hi Leo I am not going to inflate the fire by annoying you with detail, but......whilst I share some similar concerns with NZTR, the industry is a bulk funded platform as per the 2003 Act. So each code gets their apportioned share of the available spare from the NZRB to operate their business. Your ex mate from the Eastern suburbs spent $22 mil on Typhoon that was chucked in the tip. At 14.5% of turnover, work out the numbers as to the turnover that fired against the porcelain. J Allen has no idea of the value of a dollar. J Allen is an flee economically. Sold the granite, the purpose built Perone building, and drained the $20 mil of reserves he had when he took up the role. The guy has absolutely no idea what he is doing running a business. He never has run a successful business. Whilst verbose and interesting to listen to, he is humorous as he no knowledge of what he is talking about. He has spent the borrowed $25 mil and RITA get the hospital pass to extend the credit line. He is responsible, no question. You have been there with regards spend versus debt and you have learned, this codger has not learned a skerret from his underwhelming performances at NZ Post or MFAT and we, the industry, are paying the price. Unless the credit line is extended from August 1st, with turnover dropping as a result of an inferior website performance, the thoroughbred distribution to NZTR to operate the code drops dramatically and so racing has a reduction both in stakes and horse volume. They are all interconnected as a result of a CEO not knowing what the hell he is doing, on any front!! Turnover drives any industry, yours, mine and racing, when it drops so does the scope of that business performance within any industry. Pure economics 101 my friend. Cheers John

  2. I am certainly no Melody Belle cheerleader. I was never a particularly big fan, but when is the last time we have had a horse in NZ who has achieved what she achieved this season. Starting with a Group 2 win over 1,200m on a soft track, then reeling off five group 1 wins from 1,400m to 2,000m on Good to Heavy tracks shows amazing versatility and class. The poor bloody thing only struck two good tracks all season and not a single dead track. All but one of her wins had to come on soft and heavy tracks. As a 3yo she ran 1.09 on a good track, and as a 2yo she won the Karaka Millions, so just imagine what she might have done this season on decent tracks. If anything the wet tracks she struck should have given the others a chance. So in conclusion, this discussion about "what if" Bostonian wins the the Stradbroke would have to be the silliest conversation I have seen on here for ages, with the exception of the three recent "train wreck" threads of course.

  3. Believe me, I know about horses. Horses have been all around me for a long time now, they are great, they are brilliant, they are truly the best animal to carry a jockey around a racetrack. What I have done for horses is truly amazing. Alot of people are saying they wanted me to go on the RITA board. That's what people are saying. That's what I have heard. On two occasions I heard it myself. It's true. Very true. And y'know. I considered it. Yeah I considered it. I did. The phonies that run racing at the moment are not doing a good job. In fact they are doing a very bad job. They shouldn't have a job. And y'know what I would say if I did go on that RITA board... You're fired! Let's make racing great again.

    Jacinda Ardern

Interesting what will happen re leadership in National. Unless Bridges grows a pair and starts front footing things instead of acting Labour Lite then he will have to go. The problem is that you basically have left wing media in NZ who won't take Ardern to task on all her failings, instead treating her to soft fluffies every chance they get. Add into the fact that the most biased Speaker of the House ever in Mallard protects Ardern at question time and time again shuts down opposition when they are getting on top of the coalition then it makes life pretty difficult for Bridges. However, unless Bridges stuffs up in the near future I don't think there will be a change at this point providing, as I said, he grows a pair and starts attacking the coalition strongly and aggressively. He has to be smart though and pick his targets as there is no doubt if he does come and attack Ardern the left media will be there waiting to portray him as a bully.

  6. Hi Scooby I have followed your site for a long time And thought I would join and talk about horses and things and contribute to be part of it .But it seems as much as we like to talk this Steve C or what ever comes in with his venomous and horrible name calling or as us old soldiers call bullying. The way things have been heading I think there will be fewer contributors which is sad. As Im sure we like talk about horses and enjoy peoples opinion but this person is a legion in his own lunch time and anyone who puts a selfie on with Veitch should not be allowed on this site.As much as you try to be diplomatic and fair Scooby he seems to think he can say what he likes I hope and Im sure others would like to get back to the way it was .Thats all Ive got to say about that

  7. You certainly don't have to worry about me getting into any debate with the man with the multiple identities. I always thought he was a bit strange, but he has certainly gone to a new level lately. I used to think he may be "taking the piss" a bit, but I do believe he is totally genuine. I stopped reading the train wreck threads so I have no idea if he ever posted the selfie with p4p last weekend. And he may well be right, Osborne may be the best sprinter in Aussie, and he has just been beaten by Bostonian, who is clearly inferior to Melody Belle, so how good does that make her?

Wow you really do live in another world...so delusional...i would far rather have a poster like We're Doomed who tells the truth and does not try to make himself out to be someone he is not over you any day of the week. So please dont try to stir trouble with another forum member... you know how bad a beating you copped last time you tried.....

  10. Don't you mean "the best sprinter in Australia" to have never won a Group 1 race? Or the best sprinter in Australia to have only won one group race in his whole career. Even Hay List managed at least three Group 1 wins despite having to content with Black Caviar for most of his career. The logic of your statement "what would Osborne Bulls do to the fields Melody Belle has won?" is totally bewildering. The last two Group 1 races Bostonian had in NZ he was beaten by, surprise, surprise, Melody Belle. She also finished ahead of him in the Railway. The only time she finished behind him all season was when they were both out of the money in the Telegraph. Surely based on that form and your tenuous grasp of logic Melody Belle would leave an Aussie who has managed one Group 2 win in his whole career, and been beaten by a NZ horse she can beat for fun, eating her dust.

He's certainly a horse with a big future ahead of him. Apparently the soundness issues aren't an issue at the moment either. I'm sure Tank won't mind the freezing mornings on the beach this winter!! Another horse appeared at Winton on Saturday too that appears to be cut from much the same cloth as U May Collect. The name Wild West is one you're going to hear plenty about. He is very much U May Collect-ish in the way he goes. Unfortunately he'll probably be sold before long so Southlanders might only get to see him in the flesh for a short while.

Not sure if you are in jest, I hope so If not how is it pointless, I would have thought every victory anywhere by any horse is worth cheering for by the connections. In this case the more wins UMC has the quicker he goes thru the grades the sooner he can take on the best at Adders Hardly pointless in fact the opposite.

  13. It is a sad day when HRNZ get so sensitive regarding strong debate on anything or anyone who dont tow the party line. There are a number of great men and women in our industry at all levels and there are some self interested idiots who cant see the wood for the large green things and believe bluster and threats can win the day. I am a little disappointed in many on here who I regard as mates( although never met) getting into attack mode but hope it all ends well.My name if anyone gives a toss is John Albert Penney ,a bettor, a drinker,a womaniser (most reject me now !!)a horse owner, and all I want is more wins in harness racing . Is that too much to ask at 71.

    Interesting drive

Just throwing out a comment re Blair Orange drive on Hampden in r10 at Winton yesterday. Had ample time to peel out of trail before home turn. He decided to stay in trail and allow another horse to build momentum and beat him. Did he give hampden the best chance of winning? Was he spoken to? not in stipes report

    jewels day

Would like to know peoples thoughts on the hospitality prices for Jewels day. I was told last week that Spectators is $125 pp which only includes entry and some food! Last year I was in the Clubhouse Bar at Cambridge and the package was $100 including beer and wine and food. I have come to think Addington Raceway is very greedy and it is a rip off so I wont be going at this stage. As a side note the beer prices at Addington in spectators are a disgrace too. $16 for a jug!!! that is one place I wont be having a beer in! Regards AC (first time poster on this forum)

The latest is that Luis Saez was given a 15 day suspension, see link: https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/233636/jockey-luis-saez-suspended-15-days-for-derby-infraction . This would come as no surprise, since the CD stewards DQ'ed Maximum Security. They "had" to do this to support their decision. Saez will be appealing the decision. Hopefully, in doing so the stewards/Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will view the video that exonerates him. I continue to struggle to see how the "powers that be" cannot see that Tyler Gafflione (rider of #1, War of Will) was the cause of the contact by hitting Maximum Security's hind legs when attempting to go around. As for the owner's, reports are that they will be proceeding with legal action. Personally, I hope they are successful.

For HOTY I think another factor should be considered: a horse's ability to capture the imagination of the public. MB is streets ahead of TB in that regard as well. Winning one Group 1 sprint in Queensland isn't enough IMO for The Bostonian to leap ahead of Melody Belle for HOTY. He won very narrowly off a perfect trip and rails run. And several of the best Oz sprinters not there..incl dual Everest winner Redzel, Santa Ana Lane etc. I'm very pleased to see TB win for NZ in Qsld, just don't think we should get ahead of ourselves.

  19. MS and the Board at the time got told by the techs very early on that Typhoon would not integrate with Jetbet, but they still preceded. Much like the Triple Trio disaster, CEO’s without racing knowledge seem to like spending money that isn’t their own, and everyone suffers. Greyhounds are just pokies on legs, they are ideal for fulfilling the needs of the addicted gambler. And agree with you both, it’s a hard ship to turnaround, seems to be to far gone because of the ineptitude of the at the top. Sunset industry? Well, they have the right team, they’ve all come from NZ Post.

Yeah I would still have Melody Belle ahead, but we all know all G1's aren't equal, and a G1 $800,000 win over top sprinters like Osborne Bulls and Nature Strip is miles above any NZ G1. Although for NZ racing's sake it would be better to give it to her and acknowledge her efforts at home.

    Jacinda Ardern

Here is my opinion. I think both parties are controlled by the deep state globalists as they are in Australia, UK and Canada. Like the puppet Obama their goal is to destroy western civilization by chaos with there leftist agenda as set out in Agenda 21 and form a one world govt. This is exactly what Trump has fought in the US and the public have woken up as have other European countries. Interestingly Trumps former CIA director and now Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in the past 2 years, has visited almost all the countries in the world....except 4. Guess who? Australia, NZ, Canada and UK Why is that? 5eyes? With the shit about to hit the fan in the US starting with the declassification of the FISA documents you will find NZ along with the other 5eyes countries will be implicated big time in the highest level of corruption and the cat will be out of the bag. Stay tuned

I'm a big UMC fan. But yes, somehow there are quite a few people that are, maybe not knocking UMC, but at the very least dismissing his performances and not wanting to give him too much credit. THEIR arguments are mainly based around the class of horse that he is beating up. I can see where they are coming from but my argument is one can only win. More importantly than that, it is the fashion that he is winning. He looks to have a massive stride and when the button is pushed, there's plenty of horse power there. I don't think he could currently beat Thefixer, Spankem or Turn It Up. But I think he would give them something to think about for sure and there wouldn't be another horse (in NZ) that he should be scared of. My thinking is, because he will be a 6-year old in November, his target has to be the Cup this year. If he was a 3 or 4 yr old now, you could set your sights a little lower, but time isn't really on his side. Having said that he has now had only 5 race day starts, so he still has fresh (but previously buggered) legs with little milage in them. I wish the connections every success. Good luck!

Getting back to the thread at hand and keeping the personal attacks out, the conversation was about Melody Belle and her HOTY prospects - which at the moment seem to be “in the bag”. But if The Bostonian does the double by winning the Stradbroke (bear in mind he’s 15/1 in the betting for the Straddie) then he would have to come into consideration for NZ Sprinter and also HOTY. Not many do the double. Just an opinion

Hard to disagree with you , but I guess the Quality of the days Harness Racing will be long remembered after the price is forgotten. Plus one assumes there are enough folk [ demand ] willing and able to afford to pay for a comfortable room and surroundings to view what is usually an exciting days racing. I guess its a bit like paying for a club membership these days...not a lot of value in it with free entry etc these days. As a rare drinker ,I also often find myself 'subsidising' the drinks of the big drinkers who can have a great days 'good value' drinking on any ticket which includes drinks . I see it as contribution to the Club and Industry as they really need to make a dollar on their biggest day......... The actual cost I compare to $450 to Watch Lions test v All Blacks , $300 for Celine Dion ,$250 for USA rocker whose name escapes me [ great show ! ] A$750 for Members stand [with some restrictions] for the Derby/Melbourne Cup duo....A$100 minimum for Melbourne cup public area to see very little ! At least its just a gold coin donation[ to St Johns] to get into the Jewels ! Everyone welcome !

  36. Relying totally on memory, I can't recall any NZ horse who has won HOTY purely because of their deeds at the Queensland winter carnival. I suspect Rough Habit would have won HOTY the year he won the Stradbroke and Doomben Cup, but he was going so well that year that he probably won Group Ones in NZ and elsewhere in Australia that season as well. I can't see anyone getting near Melody Belle this year to be honest.

  41. OK, I may have paraphrased a little! You along with a few others on here you have got hold of the wrong end of the stick! The issue I have is not with any trainers that are using ACS as they are doing so legitimately under the current rules. The issue I have is with the legitimacy of the product itself and the pain killing anti-inflammatory benefits it provides as compared to the benefits most people are aware of. There are no names to name. The users are quite open about it, and rightly so. After all, it's a permitted products under the current rules. The side benefits however have the potential to skew the playing field! If raising the issue makes me a bad person, then it's little wonder the industry is on shakier ground than me!

Back on topic - In the video that I mentioned, link: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Watch_New_video_key_to_Maximum_Security_s_Kentucky_Derby_appeal_123 , where the owner of Maximum Security claims that War of Will came off his true line and clipped the back legs of Maximum Security. There is now an article (interview with Jason Servis, trainer of Maximum Security), link: https://www.app.com/story/sports/horses/2019/05/08/servis-still-furious-maximum-security-dq-kentucky-derby/1139284001/ where Servis states that Maximum Security has cuts on his hind two legs from the race. The question is were those cuts a result of War of Will coming out and clipping Maximum Security or did they result in the subsequent contact. Looks like Maximum Security's connections have a case. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
